Minutes of the General Faculty Meeting

The general faculty of Clemson College met in the Chemistry building auditorium on Friday January 26 1951 at 4 pm with Presshyident Poole presiding

Following the reading by the secretary of the minutes of the preceding meeting Deans Cooper Hunter Washington Sams and Brown moved that the appended lists of candidates for degrees as amended by the appended listw of deletions be approved Dean Kinard stated that by a vote of the School of Arts and Sciences and with the concurrence of the dean of the other school concerned Mr o N Thompson had been pershymitted to make a substitution for a one-hour laboratory course in botany He therefore asked that Mr Thompsons name be removed from the list of deletions and restored to the list of candidates and that the list as amended by the amended deletion list be approved

Dr Webb Chairman of the Graduate Committee after stating that two names had been removed from the list of candidates for the Master of Science degree because of failure to complete requirements moved t~t the Master of Science degree in Chemistry be awarded to Mr Allen Ridley Slone of Pendleton the Master of Science Degree in Edushycation to Mr Carl Dewel Boggs of Seneca and to Mr George Smith McKenshyzie of Mullins the Master of Science degree in Textile Chemistry to Mr Mohanm1ed Hafiz-ul-Islem of Rajshahi East Pakistant

All of these motions were approved without connnent

The Registrar Mr G E Metz announced plans for graduation exercises to be held in the Field House on Sunday January 28 at 1130 am and called attention to the list of honor graduates and other information contained in the material which had been distributed and is appended to these minutes

The Cormnandant Col Cookson stated that at the present time all ROTC students were being deferred and being given the right to choose the branch of service which they wished to enter

President Poole stated that present feeling in Washington seems to favor enlarging the ROTC program and giving special considshyeration to the nine essentially military colleges of which Clemson is one

He said that the College was asking for an increased approprishyajtion in the hope that salaries might be raised

He again referred to the Clemson House project and asked that the faculty support it at least to the extent of sending their friends there He said that alumni and friends had contributed $50000 toward furnishing the building and that from present indications it seemed that the debt on the entire project might be amortized

In speaking of contributions to the college during the year he said that the contractor of the building project Mr C E Daniel had saved the college a large sum by carrying the debt personally until a change in financing could be arranged from government to private sources

He called attention to the large amount in equipment and funds which Dean Brown had been able to secure for the School of Textiles and expressed the hope that contributi~ns might be secured toward furnishing the new Chemistry building now nearing completion

He asked the faculty to keep their troubles and complaints within the faculty circle and to bring rumors to him on the promise that he would give them the truth as far as he knew it

He asked the faculty to make use of the Kress fund for research again praised the work of the new counselling program and asked support for the Religious Emphasis program to be held February 6 - 9

The meeting was adjourned at 445 pm

Minutes of the General Faculty Meeting Friday April 27 1951

lt The general faculty of Clemson College met in the Chemistry Lecture

Room on Friday April 27 1951 at 415 pm with President Poole presiding

The President expressed pleasure at the large ~ttendance and calling

attention to the heat of the a~ernoon s~id that he hoped that those present

would relax

He referred to the steps taken in advance to arrange for Senior Day

and to the fact that in spite of these plans something went wrong on Tuesshy

day night the eve of Senior Day

He said that meetings of the faculty council and heads of departments

had already been held and that the purpose of the general faculty meeting was

to line up thinking for the present and future

He added that his personal feeling was that there should be no more

Senior Days

He then read a prepared statenent a copy of which is appended in

which he called attention to the fact that Clemson being a land-grant college

comprises marv factors has varied functions has a large number of committees

all of which have the same objective~ ie to serve that a high sense of

loyalty and tolerance and individual and collective initiative are necessary

that many committees such as tm schedule committee and many individuals

perform services in addition to teaching duties that the prestige of the

college in contingent upon sound principles of conduct and achievement

It is now necessary he continued to re-examine our organization

He said that the loyalty of every faculty and staffDBmber is essential that

by words and deeds each person influences others that the aim of all is to

educate young men that everything that concerns this aim is the business of

every member of the faculty and that m would count on the support and cooper-

( He explained that he did not think that anything could be gained by

a general discussion in so large a group but that any ~rson might express his

views then or to him personally at a later time

lt Clemson especially because it is an educational

institution of the land-grant college type comprises many

complex factors Clemson has a multiplicity _of divergent

functions it has a faculty of many and various philosophies

and it has a student body of an even greater variety of

individuals For obvious reasons the large number of

corrnnittees both standing and special use rules and

regulations with similar objectives designed to serve the

best interests of the college

The administrative and teaching functions of a

gt land- grant college require a high sense of loyalty tolerance

and individual and collective initiative At Clemson I believe

we have these traits evidenced from day to day with a few

reservations For example the extraordinary work of the

Schedule Committee in which the members in addition to heavy

teaching loads spend many hours arranging complicated ~edules

is proof of the faith and fidelity of these men to college needs of

of every faculty and staff member of Clemson College as expressed

in the language of the Bylaws of the institution is essential

By words and deeds each faculty member influences others whether

they be strangers friends students or fellow staff members

The aim of Clemson College is to educate young men And

anything and everything that concerns this aim whether 4 ra mt

it is good or bad is the business of every staff member

In upholding sound principles I shall depend on your

fullest cooperation and your willingness to help maintain a

most worthy and useful institution and exert your greatest

influence for the good of the college

Minutes of General Faculty Meeting (

The faculty of Clemson College met in the auditorium of the Chemistry

Building at 4 pm on Friday June 1 1951 with President Poole presiding

Deans Cooper Kinard Hunter Wa~hington and Sams and Professor

Gaston Gage acting int~ absence of Dean Brown presented the names of

candidates from the various schools as indicated on the enclosed lists

and lists of deletions It was moved and voted that the indicated degrees

be ~

Captain Beaven stated that Mr D C Shirley would like to make a

substitution Mr Metz stated that no formal application for such a subshy

stitution had been presented to the Deans and Directors

Dr HJ Webb Chairman of the Graduate Committee moved that the (

amended list of candidates for tm Masters degree be approved am it was

so voted

Mr Metz announced plans for graduation exercises to be held on Sunday

June 3 at 6 pm

President Poole thanked the faculty for a successful years work

On motion of Dean Hunter it was voted to dispense with the reading

of faculty committee reports and have mimeographed copies distributed later

Dean Hunter announced that the new Chemistry Building would be open for

inspection on June 2 from 4 to 6 pm and Mr G B Nutt announced that the

new Agricultural Engineering Building would be open during the same hours

Dr D c Sheldon chairman of the committee on scholarship and honors

moved that the Norris Medal be awarded to MR M Prince who was gradw~ting

With a grade point ratio of 842 The motion was approved

Dr Sheldon also announced thatmiddot the Sullivan award sponsored by

the New York Southern Society was being given to Mr James Cushman

graduating senior from Chester for neeting with high moral and citizen-

ship standards and to Mr c E Daniel for bis untiring efforts in

Dr Poole then gave not only an opportunity but a cordial invitation

to the faculty to make any statements which they might care to make

In the lengthy session which followed which took the form of the

familiar for the good of the ordertt Dean Hunter pointed with pride to

the new Chemistry Building Professor Nutt mentioned the new Agricultural

Engineering Building Professor Gage mentioned the improvements in the

Textile Building and new equipnent Professor St Hubert referred to the

accomplishments of the students of architecture Dr Poole referred to

the honors received by Dean Brown of tlE School of Textiles and again

referred to Mr C E Daniels services to Clemson Dean Sams referred to

Mr Kirk Craigs being awarded seconl place in a national architectural

contest Dean Kinard stated that a Clemson student ranked in the top

three per cent in English in a National College Record examination

Col Cookson stated that under existing regulations he thought that all

Clemson students could be deferred Captain Beaven stated that next year

courses in armament and flight operations would be offered in addition

to the present course in air force maintenance Professor Stepp expressed

the pride felt by the School of Agriculture over the fact that Dr Poole

Dean Cooper and Dr G H Aull were presidents this year of national

organizations Mr J C Littlejohn stated that the new hotel and housing

project had drawn compliments from Maine to Florida

Dr Poole recognized the presence of Dr Earle and Major Martin

who spoke briefly

The remarks which drew the greatest applause came when President Poole

called on Professor E L CJarke who was to retire this year to tell the

faculty how he had managed to live to tre ripe age of seventy two Professhy

Minutes of general Faculty Meeting

The faculty of Clemson College met in the auditorium oi- the new Chemistry Building at 530 pm on Friday August 10 1951with President Poole presiding

Following the reading by the secretary of the minutes of the precedin~ meeting the President turned to the business at hand

Mr c L Morgan acting for Dean Cooper and Deans Kinard Washington Sams Brown and Webb moved that the candidates from the Schools middot of Agriculture Arts andmiddot Sciences Education and _ Engineering and the Graduate School as indicated on the appended lists and lists ampf deletions be awareded their degree it was so voted

Mr Metz the Registrar asked that thefaculty approve the delayed award of a degree to Mr J T Deason whose diploma was held up in June middotas the result of an error made in reporting a grade on one course The award was approved

Mr Metz announced plans for middotconirnencernent exercises to be held in the outdoor theatre at 700 pm on Saturday August ll and announced that the first faculty meeting in the fall would be held on Tuesday September 4Jat ll00 a m in the college chapel

President Poole referred to the heat with which the faculty had had to contend during the swnrner and expressed the hope that air conshyditioning equipment might some day be installed

He stated that Mr c E Daniel since the June meeting had contributed an additional $5000000 to complete the improvements and add to the equipment of the Textile Building

He referred to Mr Daniels efforts to bring additional industries to the state and to the many fine structures which his firm had erected

The President stated that the Trustees felt that the faculty should make an effort to display the college buildings and facilities to the best advantage In order to give the members of the Legislature an opportunity to secure first-hand information he continued the Trustees had decided to invite all legislators to spend a day on the campus next spring

The President announces plans for the dedication of the Textile Building on November 3 and for the awarding of ari honerary degree Doctor of Industries to a number of outstanding men on that occasion

He said that he had appointed a committee composed of Dr s B Ear~ Mr M E Bradley and Mr A B Bryom all retired 1nembers of the faculty to select the men to be honoree

Their reconnnended list be continued had seem approved by the Trustees and by the Deans and Directors with the understanding that Dean Brown might reconunend additions to the list

On motion of Dr G H Collings seconded by Dean Washington the faculty voted to approve the awarding of these honorary degrees

After thanking the faculty for a successful summer session and expressing hopes for a middot pleasant vacation the President declared the meeting adjourned at 555 pm (~

MINUTES OF GENERAL FACULTY MEETING

The General Faculty of Clemson College met in the college chapel on Tuesday September 4 at 11 am with President Poole presidingbull

~~ Following the reading by the secretary of the minutes of the preceding

meetina the President recognized Mr c L Morgan who in the absence of Dean Cooperintroduced the new members of the faculty of the School of Agriculture a list of these names being appended

Dean F M Kinard stated that there were no additions to the faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences but thata number of men had returned from graduate study including Dr Gilbert Miller who received his PhD Degree in August from the University of Florida

Dr F B Schirmer acting for Dean Hunter introduced the new members of the School of Chemistry Deans Washington Sams and Brown introduced the new members of the faculty of the Schools of Education Engineering and Textiles respectively Colonel Cookson introduced the new members of the Army staff and Colonel John B F Dyce the new members of the Air lorce Staff All these names are included in the appended list

The President then welcomed the newcomers and those returning from graduate study

He stated that the faculty reception would be held at his home on Thursday September 13 from 8 to 10 pm and that all members of the faculty who had been added to the staff since June were invited to stand in the receiving line All people in the community were invited he said

He called attention to the copies of faculty reports and faculty handbooks which had been distributed and announced that tickets for the concert series were available in his office

Mr G E Metz the Registrar announced plans for registration to be held on Sept ember 6 and September 7 He stated that from present indications there would be a freshmen class of approximately 800 including about 100 who entered in June and that the total enrollment would probably be between 2600 and 2700

The President thanked those who had helped to make the annual Farmers Week Program one of the best yet held he again referred to the services performed by t he counselling schedule and examining committees he called for tact caution and discretion on the part of the faculty in their relations with the public and expressed the hope that the present wholesome and close relationship~uthe faculty and the student body would continue

After expressing best wishes for another successful year he declared the meeting adjourned at 11155 am

In speaking of contributions to the college during the year he said that the contractor of the building project Mr C E Daniel had saved the college a large sum by carrying the debt personally until a change in financing could be arranged from government to private sources

He called attention to the large amount in equipment and funds which Dean Brown had been able to secure for the School of Textiles and expressed the hope that contributi~ns might be secured toward furnishing the new Chemistry building now nearing completion

He asked the faculty to keep their troubles and complaints within the faculty circle and to bring rumors to him on the promise that he would give them the truth as far as he knew it

He asked the faculty to make use of the Kress fund for research again praised the work of the new counselling program and asked support for the Religious Emphasis program to be held February 6 - 9

The meeting was adjourned at 445 pm
