3. Introduction

3.1 Purpose of the DocumentA Function Area is an area of functional responsibility for a subset of the entire functionality of a car. It contains a defined set of functions from the “98% complete feature List” maintained by JLR – Infotainment department.

The Function Area Description (FAD) document is used to describe, collect and develop the functional behaviour of a function area. The FAD document is supposed to bridge the gap between the customers’ (vehicle Users’) specifications and the detailed design requirements. The semantics used in the FAD document is at a level of abstraction that is suitable and fully understandable for both end-customer and designer. The FAD document is kept on a higher level, not risking it to deteriorate into a detailed design document which would be much tedious to update.

The FAD document does not address non-functional requirements such as performance, timing, cost, ergonomics, weight, styling, dirt contamination etc. Project specific documents need to be referred for these details.

This FAD document does not describe how the functions are to be realized on different platforms or how the functions will be accessed by the User. Thus, the functions can be developed undisturbed from architectural changes and FADs developed in one project can be used in another project with no major changes.

3.2 Introduction to the Document FormatThe structure of this document is explained below:

Section 1 – This section describes document change history

Section 2 – This section describes the key contact person and necessary addresses of the contact person Section 3 – This section has: (a) what shall be included in the FAD document in general, (b) introduction to the document format (c) basic introduction to the FAD area, and (d) abbreviations used in the subsequent sections of the document.

Section 4 – This is the central part of the document which actually describes in detail the Audio features. Use Case modelling is used for this. Use Cases identify the actors on the System and capture the central behaviour.

Section 5 – This section describes non-functional requirements. This document adheres to following word template mentioned below. No style changes should be done to any part of the document.

Level Title GuidelinesAny Any Must not contain use case sub-section headingsLevel 1 Use Cases Must have style "Heading 1"

Must not contain use case sub-section headingsLevel 2 Use Case

CategoryMust have style "Heading 2"Must not contain use case sub-section headings

Level 3 Use case Name

Must have style "Heading 3"Must not contain use case sub-section headings

Level 4 Sub-sections within a use case

Must have style "Heading 4"

Sub-sections are generally divided into 2 parts – Requirements - These include main flow, alternate flows,

special requirements Properties of Requirements - These are properties such as

actors, preconditions, notes, etcSub-sections should be arranged in such a way to have all the properties before any requirementMain Flow of events should be first of the requirement section. Alternate flows / special requirements can follow it in any order.

Each of the alternate flow / Special Requirement should be given a separate sub-section heading.Sub-section headings should be treated as keywords and should not be used in any headings in the document.Any sub-sections with no inputs, should not be specified. For example - should not add a section for "Special Requirement" with requirement as "None". This will cause unnecessary requirements being recorded in DOORS.As far as possible avoid leaving empty spaces.Use only numbered lists. Don’t use bulleted list. Bullets will be lost during export.

3.3 Introduction to the FAD AreaAudio System is a key component of the infotainment System as it provides audible interface to the Users and its (audio System’s) intelligence directly influences User’s overall experience of the infotainment System.

The audio System is a complex System composed of high precision electronic / electrical components such as speakers, headphones, microphones, amplifier and digital signal processing software such as the one meant for noise cancellation, dynamic sound quality enhancement and support for a wide variety of advanced surround sound Systems.

The audio System may also support unique-to-car audio capabilities such as assisting in conversation among front and back seat passengers, conversation at a toll-booth (without having the need to wind down the window glasses) and active safety warnings to control speaker volumes within safe-to-human-ear limits.

In short, the audio System provides a high quality listening experience by understanding the User's needs and expectations and intelligently delivering it without making the User perform many complex settings.

The FAD contains Use Cases that describe various components of the audio resources that are present in the vehicle.
