“On Sunday 23rd. April (editor’s note 1893) the entirerailway line Faenza-Florence will be inaugurated… tomorrowFaenza and the ospitable Romagna will stretch out their brotherlyhand to the friendly Florence and the cultured Tuscany, and cele-brating happily and united their long-awaited reapproachment, they will show their firm and steady wish that from the drilledAppenines a new inspiration of culture and well-being will reachthem along with the powerful steam-engine.”(passage from the manifesto of the Commune of Faenza)

1893 was an unforgettable year for Tuscany and Romagna: final-ly the railway had tamed the mountain and permited the connectionof the two seas and the two ports: the Tyrrhenian Sea with Livornoand the Adriatic Sea with Ravenna.

The 101 kilometre long railway started from S.Maria NovellaStation in Florence and after sixteen intermediate stations (amongwhich Vaglia, S. Piero, Borgo S. Lorenzo, Ronta, Marradi, Brisighella),it reached Faenza.

The railway was rich of works of art: the splendid bridge on thestream Trillero (between Panicaglia and Ronta) all in “pietra serena”(a grey stone from Firenzuola) with splays in arches lowered by 36metres and with other eight small lights; the road bridges on theBuggiano, on the Rio Morto and of the Poggio and the very beautifulrail bridges on the Lamone and on the Faentina main road at Marradiwhich is 199 metres long, are extraordinary monuments of the Italianrailway engineering

Lorenzo-Pontassieve was opened to create a more practical connectionof the Faentina to the Florence-Rome line and to central Italy.

The stations of Vicchio, Dicomano, Contea-Londa and Rufina hadbeen placed on the way: every now and then the line passed very closeto the left and right banks of the river Sieve.

In 1944-45, the Germans in a withdrawal, systematicallydestroyed the stretch Florence-Borgo S. Lorenzo; bridges, rail bridgesand tunnels were blown up by mines charged with TNT and otherexplosives.

The lines Borgo S. Lorenzo-Faenza and Borgo S. Lorenzo-Pontassieve were brought back to move in the years following the warwhile the reconstruction of the Faentina section Borgo S. Lorenzo-Florence was started only in the 80s and on the 14th January 1999 therailway was officially put back into service.

This mini guide book wants to make a strip of the Tuscan andRomagna land known on board of a “slow” train which allows the tra-veller to spend a relaxing holiday completely immersed in nature andout of the big traffic.

The Faentina railway offers the possibility to penetrate two bigcities of art like Florence and Ravenna and in the meantime to stopin the Mugello Sieve Valley and in the valley of the Lamone where stillpure landscapes of enchantry attraction offer the tourist particularitineraries on foot, by bicycle or by bus.M a r r a d i :

The track of the Faentina line started from gates 15 and 16 at SantaMaria Novella station occupying the Florence-Rome line as far as thejunction of the “Pellegrino” from where the true and real railway trackfor Faenza started.

While waiting for the reconstuction of the access to S. MariaNovella, the departure station today is Florence Campo di Marte.

On leaving Campo di Marte, the line runs along the torrentMugnone passing very close the 16th century Villa Salviati.

On the right at the top is the splendid hill of the millenary,Etruscan Fiesole.

Then the line gets out of Florence and gets ready to immerseitself in the suggestive landscape of the Appenine. It passes the shorttunnel of “Monterinaldi” and the “Spiccarello” one just under the leeof Fiesole, getting out at Pian di Mugnone and reachingCaldine/Fiesole station.

After, the line goes through the tunnel of S. Andrea a Svegliawhich is completely curved on the left side and then through the3,584.30 metre long tunnel of Pratolino which is the second in lengthalong the Faentina line after the one of the Appenines or the Allocchi

The line gets out again just a little beyond the village ofFontebuona in the narrow valley of the torrent Carza. The railway pas-ses Vaglia and San Piero a Sieve Stations and crosses the river Sieve toenter into the heart of the Mugello.

The line cuts the main road that goes to Scarperia-Il Giogo-Imolaand passing very close to this road on the right and the river, it rea-ches the station of Borgo San Lorenzo.

FLORENCE StationThe station in Florence S. Maria Novella StationIn 1848 the Grand Duke Leopoldo di Lorena inaugurated two stationsin Florence: the “Leopolda” near Porta al Prato and the “Maria Antonia”which was built very near the apse of S. Maria Novella church. It was thought of as a little station but as time went by it acquiredmore and more importance just for its being in the heart of the histo-rical Florentine centre. In 1932 a competition was advertised for the reconstruction of theold building of the Maria Antonia Station, decaying and inadequateby now. The awarded project was the one presented by a group led bythe Tuscan architect Giovanni Michelucci. The station was inaugurated on 30th October 1935 by the King him-self, a year and a half before the opening of the “direttissima”.It is equipped with sensible structures and excellent functionality inevident contrast with the architectonic rules of that time. The main facade was withdrawn in respect to the old building in sucha way as to leave a vast square. The big entrance hall covered by dou-ble glass panes was floored with serpentine slabs and the walls werecovered with yellow marble from Siena. The six big pillars that supportthe roofing were covered with green marble slabs. The front body with the public services has a covered area of 9,200 sq.m.

The most picturesque stretch in steady ascent (at some points at26‰) for the Faentina starts from Borgo San Lorenzo.Leaving the station, the train plunges into an open landscape amongfields of wheat, soya beans and sunflowers. The scene becomes moreand more suggestive: old vine-yards and olive groves, thousand year-old parish churches, ancient farmhouses, and geometrical shaped vege-table gardens accompany the traveller as far as Ronta station, the lastcentre of the valley before facing the Appenines.

The two “faentine”, the main road and the railway, now separa-te; the first will face the Passo della Colla di Casaglia, the railwayenters into the heart of the mountain in a succession almost conti-nuous tunnels and rail bridges. During the short moments out of thetunnels, the traveller can catch a glimpse of an isolated and wild ter-ritory, among chestnut woods first and beechtree woods after. Thetraveller can see paths and old mule-tracks, old ruins and numerousrailwaymen’s cottages along the line.

A short while after the stop at Fornello, where there are neitherhouses nor roads, the track enters the great Appenines or Allocchi tun-nel which at mid-way (about 1800metres) reaches the height of the Passwhich is at 578.38 metres above sea level. Then the descent towardsRomagna starts and the traveller will then meet the stations of Crespinosul Lamone and Marradi which is the town of the poet Dino Campana.

After passing the big station with a vast service area and aboutten railway tracks, the line starts descending towards the Romagnaplain. The view is excellent; villas, medieval castles and the landscapewhich from mountaneous becomes hilly with orchards of peach treesand cherry trees which become clouds of flowers in the springtime. Thetrain then reaches the well-known medieval city Brisighella and afterten kilometers it ends its route at Faenza, rejoining to the Adriatic lineBologna-Ancona.

In 1921 the section Faenza-Russi was inaugurated and since then it ispossible (in some cases without changing train) to reach the magnificientcity of Ravenna, the following station in Classe and all the Adriatic Riviera.

Along the Sieve valleyWhen the travellers coming from Faenza reach the station at

Borgo San Lorenzo they could choose the route to Florence that goesalong the Valley of the river Sieve instead of the Faentina line.

The line infact at times, passes very near the left or right bankof the river.

From the train window the eyes meet a rich and varied landsca-pe: a line of cypress trees that lead to a Villa often hidden among thetrees of an age-old park, ancient farm cottages on top of a hill, likemassif of Monte Giove on the right, Monte Falterona in the backgroundand the ridge of the Tosco-Romagnolo Appenines on the left.

Leaving Borgo San Lorenzo the line reaches Vicchio which isGiotto’s and Beato Angelico’s birth place: here the valley bottom isstill vast but it closes a little after, in the vicinity of Dicomano.

The line bends towards South reaching the station ofContea/Londa. From here the landscape designed by the Sieve and itstributtaries becomes sweeter with soft hilly tops cultivated by rowsof vines often interrupted by the grey foliage of the olive trees.

After passing the station in Rufina, famous for its excellentChianti wine which bears the same name, the line skirts the mainForlivese road and reaches Pontassieve where the Sieve flows togetherwith the Arno. From here to the main station S. Maria Novella inFlorence, the train continues its route on the line coming rom Rome.

There are still raretraces of the numerous fortress and castles which they had con-structed on the territory. The village history is tied to the ancientabbey founded before the year one thousand. PONTASSIEVE StationPontassieve was born in a pre Etruscan period at the confluence of theriver Sieve and the Arno. Some recoveries witness the Etruscan andRoman rule; it was the residence of various Lords from Filicaia. At theend of the year 1300 they had a bridge built on the river Sieve and theygranted a license for a market since the village was on the cross roadsof the Casentino, Arezzo and Romagna. In 1355 Cosimo I had the brid-ge rebuilt appending the Medici coat-of-arms on the side. The deve-lopment of the town started in 1859 with the construction of therailway Milan-Rome-Naples which crossed Pontassieve.
