The Wilson County Fair will offer visi-tors several new attractions for the 2011 in-stallment, with additions includinglumberjacks, cowboys on horseback, ATVracing and more.

“This year there is something to appealto every person who comes to the fair,”said Fair Board President Hale Moss.

Paul Bunyan Lumberjack ShowThe Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show

runs everyday of the fair on the VolunteerStage. According to Moss, the show in-cludes log rolling in water, tree climbingand many other traditional lumberjackevents.

“We actually had them at the fair about10 years ago, it was a pretty popular show. They are all champion lumberjacks,” Mosssaid. Showtimes are Monday-Thursday at6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Friday at 6, 8 and 9p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 4,6 and8 p.m.

Pro Style Cowboy Mounted ShootingCompetition

The mounted shooting competition willtake place Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. This

event is making its first appearance at thefair, and Moss said these shows are “realpopular west of the Mississippi River.”

“It combines the horseman’s riding skillsand shooting skills into one event. Eachcontestant has to guide the horse throughthe course while aiming at balloons placedon poles and attempting to pop them. Itdemonstrates horse and rider working to-gether,” he said.

Moss also noted there was a lot of localinterest and locals involved in this show.

Rooster Crowing ContestHave you ever wondered what it takes

to make a rooster crow? Then this contestis one you don’t want to miss. Stemmingfrom the popularity of the Rhode IslandRed Head competition, the rooster crowingcontest pits man against fowl in an attemptto make the latter crow as many times aspossible in the time limit.

“Its a fun event to bring attention to thepoultry barn. Whoever can encourage therooster to crow the most times in the giventime limit wins.”

Moss admits he is interested to see justhow someone encourages a rooster tocrow in the afternoon as “everyone knowsthat roosters crow in the morning.” Thecontest will be Sunday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m.

ATV/Utility Flat Track RacingFor those visitors who enjoy good old-

fashioned racing on dirt, the ATV/FlatTrack races will be held Wednesday, Aug.

17 and may be just what your looking for.Races begin at 6 p.m.

Despite weather, WilsonFair remains in Top 50By SANDY CAMPBELLStaff Writer

For the third year, the Wilson County Fair has been named one of the top 50 fairsin North America by Carnivalwarehouse.com., a website devoted to fairs, festivals, carnivals and events.

Wilson County Promotions President Hale Moss said this ranking came despitethe fact that torrential rains and resulting mud forced officials to close the gates onWednesday night, the first time in history.

The last three annual rankings for the Wilson County Fair are:2008 – 41st2009 – 37th2010 – 49thThis year's attendance was 397,075. Last year, it was 505,434. Moss believes the drop in rankings had more to do with the weather – it was ex-

tremely hot on the days the rain wasn't falling – than on any waning interest by fair-goers.

The top fair on the list this year was the Texas State Fair in Dallas, followed by theHouston Livestock Show & Rodeo and the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul.

No other fair held in Tennessee made the list.Moss has been working with the fair in some capacity since 1979 and has been

president for 26 years. He said several factors have contributed to the fair's recent na-tional recognition, including its location at the Ward Agricultural Center, with its rel-atively easy access from I-40.

On a separate list complied by Carnivalwarehouse.com., Amusements of Amer-ica, which provides the carnival rides and midway for the Wilson County Fair, wasrated 10th among such contracting companies.
