PLUSNEWS

(Continued on Page 10)

OUR HISTORY: Over these past ten plus years we’ve taken over a hundred

trips.  The Fairfield Gazette’s web-site has back issues available from September, 2004.  In order to go back to our beginning, we must thank Kelly Peel of Peel Inc. for locating all our articles from their archives and sending them to us. We now have every article submitted, which enabled us to put together Our History, and a complete listing of all our trips. Just go to Our History in our weekly email to read about our beginning and all the trips we’ve taken.NOTE: WE SECURED A BUS FOR AN OCTOBER TRIP.

We received a call that a bus became available early October and quickly made plans for a trip on October 19. Just another reason to check our web site and receive our weekly emails regularly.

OUR NOVEMBER BUS TRIP PLANS ARE FOR:

Wednesday, November 2, to go to Austin, Texas. We will take a guided tour of the Lady Bird Johnson

Wildflower Center in the morning. The site includes numerous research display gardens, landscaped areas and theme gardens. After the tour we will have time to have lunch on our own at their café, explore the gardens, and /or visit the gift shop.

After lunch, we will be proceeding to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. “This state-of-art museum features exhibits and interactive experiences that trace Texas history from before European Exploration to the early 1970’s.” You will be free to explore the museum on your own. However, extra fees will be charged if you elect to go to the IMAX Theater ($6) or the Texas Spirit Theater ($4).

The cost for this trip will be $18 plus the cost of your lunch. And the theater ticket if you choose. All reservations must be paid for no later than Friday, October 21st.

To get your name on the list for this trip call: Mary or Andy Lawrence at 281-256-2831.Checks are to be made out to: Fairfield 50 Plus. Checks can

be given to Jackie Wurth, Kay Wheeler or Mary Lou Cook, or the checks can be mailed to the Lawrence’s at 16618 Shimmering

Around FairfieldLake Drive, Cypress, Texas, 77433.

We will depart from the Fairfield Village Parking Lot promptly at 8:00 a.m. Please be there by 7:45 a.m.

DECEMBER: THERE IS NO DECEMBER BUS TRIP.We were not able to get a bus for December.

OUR NOVEMBER ACTIVITIES PLANS: Thursday, November 10: The Monthly Planning Committee

meeting is at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Trails Club House. Everyone is invited to attend these meetings and participate in our upcoming trip plans. We really need to see more participation, especially from those that are taking trips. In fact, without more participation we may be forced to cut back on some trips, possibly one every other month.

Then later, around 6:30 p.m. that evening, we have our Monthly Pot Luck. It is also at the Lakeside Trails Club House. However, plan on being there early. Doors open around 6:00 p.m. for socializing and fellowship. Then stay and join many of our members that stay to play games after the meal and to finish up the deserts.

Advance Notice: Our Annual Gift Exchange Pot Luck, December 8th.

For the annual gift exchange pot luck, everyone brings a gift (around $15.00). Ladies bring a woman’s gift and the men bring a man’s gift. Then after our meal, everyone will receive a number. The first person whose number is called will select a gift from their gender’s gifts. They then open the gift and show it to everyone. When the next number is called, that person has a choice to either select a gift from their unopened gender gifts or take one from someone.

Note: A gift can only be only taken twice. If the gift you had previously selected is taken, you will then have a choice, to either select a new gift or take one from someone else. This continues until everyone has a gift. It’s really an exciting and enjoyable evening.

Special Note: The club will be providing the meat dishes for this pot luck.

Tuesday, November 15: Game Night at the Cooks’ House. It starts around 6:30 p.m. Just bring a little snack and a healthy appetite. This is always a fun evening with great fellowship. The directions are in the Activity page on our website and will also be in our November13 weekly newsletter.

Thursday, November 24: No Game Night at Lakeside Trails Club House.

HAPPY THANKSGINING

Fairfield Book ClubThe Fairfield Book Club is a terrific way to meet other women

in our community, enjoy great conversations, and develop new friendships. We meet the third Wednesday of each month (rotating homes) from 7 to 9:30pm. Book Club members share food and drinks while discussing the book selection for that month. We read all kinds of books suggested by our members - classics, contemporary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, romance, sci-fi, etc. There are no book snobs in our group - we read it all!

If you are a book lover or simply want to expand your reading and social network, please consider joining us. We invite you to attend one of our meetings as a guest or a member. We currently have openings; however, because we hold meetings in our homes, membership is limited. For membership inquiries, please contact Linda Locke by email ([email protected], subject heading “Book Club”) or by phone (713-298-6514, evenings only).

*REVIEW OF SEPTEMBER BOOK SELECTION* The Traveler  is the first book in the Fourth Realm trilogy by

John Twelve Hawks. In this fantasy fiction thriller, the citizens of the U.S. are unknowingly watched and controlled by the Tabula, a secret organization whose mission is to establish ultimate power over the population. Rebelling against the order are visionary

Travelers and their fierce warrior protectors, the Harlequins. With several interesting subplots and memorable characters, this engaging story is hard to put down and touches on several contemporary themes, including “big brother” governmental control, emerging technologies and how they relate to privacy, familial conflict, and good versus evil. Most interestingly, the author’s name “John Twelve Hawks” is a pseudonym. His real identity is unknown, and he is said to “live off the grid.” --Submitted by K r i s t a L e w i s Abedrabbo

MOMS Club Fall FestivalThe MOMS Club Fourth Annual Fall

Festival will be held on Saturday, November 12th. It will be a fun day filled with great activities for children, shopping, and one huge bake sale! The location is still to be determined, and one key factor is different for this year’s festival. The recipients of the proceeds have changed.

The Fairfield Community has faced an exceptional year, and we, as MOMS, felt that this year our fundraising efforts should address some immediate concerns. Therefore, MOMS Club voted to split the Fall Festival funds between two Fairfield families. The first is the Torres Family whose 8 y/o son Hugo has cerebral palsy and is facing a significant surgery on August 31st and another mid- September. He is also in need of a wheel chair lift for their family van. The second recipient is the Slot family whose 4 y/o daughter was diagnosed with an inoperable liver tumor on August 16th and desperately

needed a liver transplant. Thankfully, “Izzy” was granted the gift of life by way of a donor liver on September 6th. In regards to this second recipient – we believe it is important to explain that originally the second recipient was to be the Costigan family, who lost their mother to breast cancer last fall leaving behind two young children, one with special needs. When Mr. Costigan learned about the Slot family and their daughter he graciously elected to donate his family’s portion of the funds to them in honor of his wife Lora.

Amazing what people can do when they help one another…

We hope that everyone will come out and support these amazing families. Come enjoy some food, fun, and shopping in November. If you would like more information on our Fall Fest activities, please join us on Facebook!

Thank you!MOMS Club, Cypress NW Fairfield

Stuffed Animal DriveThe Compass Rose Girl Scout Service Unit is sponsoring a New Stuffed Animal Drive for

the Houston Police Department in November and December at area schools. Information about collection dates will be distributed in the coming weeks.

This third annual drive was a Girl Scout service project initiated by Julia Marie Briggs, who passed away unexpectedly in May, 2009, at the age of 13. Julia was an active athlete at Hamilton Middle School, Captain of the Cy-Fair Iron Maidens Lacrosse Team and a busy Girl Scout.

As a Cadette scout, Julia was working to earn her Silver Award by organizing a service project for the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division. She saw a need to comfort young children who were involved in homicide cases, whether as witnesses or even suspects. Julia arranged a new stuffed animal drive that was to kick off in December 2009. Within days of her passing, her Lacrosse team members and Girl Scout troop members decided that they would finish this project in her honor. With thousands of new stuffed animals collected each year, this worthy project continues today.

Please watch for information from your school about upcoming collection dates. Collections also will be held at Compass Rose Girl Scout events in November and December and at the Cy-Fair Burning Flower Lacrosse Classic tournament, named in Julia’s honor, in early December. Consider donating new stuffed animals in memory of a young woman and her promise and in honor of young children in need.

For more information, contact Vera Briggs at [email protected].

Northwest Harris County Aggie Mother’s Club

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011Featuring Hero Greg Hall, Engineering Expert

Texas A&M UniversityJoin the Aggie Moms of Northwest Houston in welcoming our

outstanding speaker, former Aggie Greg Hall, class of ’82. His name may not ring a bell, but he is world famous! Greg Hall is a co-owner of Drillers Supply International and recently helped rescue workers caught in the Chilean mine disaster. Using his engineering expertise and local connections, Greg was able to drill a shaft large enough to rescue the 33 miners. Come and listen as Greg Hall speaks about this unbelievable experience! Mr. Hall has also recently been ordained as a deacon of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church.

The upcoming meeting will be held Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 at 7 pm at the Houston Distributing Company Inc. conveniently located at Cutten Road and 7100 High Life Drive near Willowbrook Mall. Join fellow Aggie Moms for refreshments and fellowship, followed by our guest speaker and updates on current projects and information. The NWHC Aggie Moms’ Club serves the northwest Houston community and the students of Texas A&M University by providing student scholarships and donations to TAMU student organizations.

Each month our Aggie boutique features a variety of hand-made and one-of-a-kind Aggie items for sale, and this month we will be showcasing our beautiful Aggie Christmas ornaments. Care Packages are also on sale for Aggie students to enjoy during finals on December 5th. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to show your Aggie student how much you care! The deadline is fast approaching to get your student involved in our Scholarship Program. Information will be available at the meeting and for more details go to our website at www.nwhcaggiemoms.org or contact President Judy Thompson at 281-798-4312.

MENTOR ONE CHILDChange Two Lives

CROSSROADS: Community Partnership for Youth Inc. (CROSSROADS), a United Way agency, provides mentoring for youth involved with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department. These youth are in need of caring adults who can serve as mentors to provide encouragement and guidance. With thousands in the juvenile justice system, the need for mentors is growing.

Mentors must be at least 21 years of age, commit to 1 hour each week and attend a training and orientation session. There are many sites, areas (Katy, Clear Lake, Chimney Rock/Bellaire, and Downtown) and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. Volunteers mentor boys and girls that are placed in facilities by the juvenile probation department and who are in desperate need of a positive role model.

The program is very simple, flexible and especially beneficially to both the youth and the mentor. Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy and hurting child (10 -17 yrs. old). Many times you may be the only positive role model in their lives! The mission of CROSSROADS is to prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive relationships between youth and volunteers. CROSSROADS is symbolic of where the youth we serve are standing - at a critical point in time in their lives.

For more information you may contact us at 713-295-2779or visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

What is CFIMLAX?The answer is Cy-Fair Iron Maidens Lacrosse. The Iron

Maidens were formed about ten years ago and have an impressive resume for the short time the program has been in existence. The Iron Maidens Varsity program has been runner-up in state the past two years and will be led by a senior-rich squad during the 2011-2012 season. The Middle School program is instrumental in developing the younger players and preparing them for the high school level. The Iron Maidens also offer programs for girls as young as 3rd grade.

Lacrosse is considered to be North America’s oldest sport and was originated by the North American Indian. Youth Lacrosse in America is the fastest growing segment of the sport and High School Lacrosse is seeing phenomenal growth compared to other sports.

The high school teams practice at Bleyl Middle School and the middle school and youth practice at the Coles Crossing Fields.

The regular season takes place in the spring and the teams compete in tournaments during the fall. The Iron Maidens attend the Halloween Shootout (Dallas Area) each fall and take 4-5 teams to play in the different age groups.

In December every year the Iron Maidens host the Burning Flower Tournament. The 2011 tournament will be held December 3rd -4th at Cullen Park (19008 Saums Rd., Houston TX). This tournament has taken on a more special meaning in recent years as we honor the memory of one of our former players. On May 30, 2009, thirteen year-old Julia Marie Briggs, a former Iron Maiden, suddenly and very unexpectedly passed away from Mediastinal Lymphoma (a

very rare and aggressive cancer). Prior to her passing, Julia was beginning her quest to attain the Silver Award for Girls Scouts. Her idea was to gather stuffed animals

for the Houston Police Department for homicide detectives to give to children to hold for comfort in times of crisis. Please come out to see some fantastic girl’s lacrosse and donate stuffed animals to support

the Houston Police Department. For information on how to donate stuffed animals

please send an email to either [email protected] or [email protected]. To learn more about the

Cy-Fair Iron Maidens program, please visit us at www.cyfairironmaidenslacrosse.org .

SAFETY Safety is everyone’s concern and we want everyone to be out of harm’s way when on foot or on a bicycle travelling through the community. It has been brought to our attention that in the early hours of the morning, before sunrise, some joggers, runners, cyclists, strollers, etc. are not wearing some type of reflective clothing, making it difficult for drivers to see them in the darkness. For your safety, and so those driving in Fairfield during the early hours can see you, please have something reflective on your clothing, shoes or bicycle. We want everyone to be safe and therefore need everyone’s support. Thank you.

From AMIWhat Can You DoAbout Soliciting

In The Neighborhood? Many communities are ripe targets for solicitors – for a variety of reasons. While the Association has no real control over soliciting activities, we have tried to discourage solicitors from marketing in our community by placing “no soliciting” signs in common areas. The reason that we cannot prevent soliciting is that the streets and roadways within the community are public access ways owned and maintained by the county. This means that no person or persons may be prevented from entering the community. Of course, if an individual or individuals are in the process of breaking the law, the Sheriff or other law enforcement officer can take immediate action. Your Association recommends the following actions that every owner can take to discourage unwelcome soliciting in the community:• Report all suspicious persons to the Sheriff’s

Department and request the deputies on duty be made aware of your concerns.

• Promptly remove all flyers left on your front or garage door.• Promptly report to the Post Office all flyers left on the mailboxes.• Refuse to make use of solicitors’ offers and refuse to patronize

any company being marketed in this manner.• Notify the managing agent of any companies presently soliciting

so that letters can be sent advising them of this policy of not permitting door to door soliciting (they will be reminded of the community newsletter and/or the Green Sheet as marketing options).

• Individual homeowners have the ability to place a small “No Trespassing/No Soliciting” sign at the entry to their homes. Should a solicitor continue to leave flyers, the homeowner then has the authority to file charges against the Solicitor/Company for trespassing on private property.

Candy Cane Fun Run for EducationSaturday, December 10th at 9:00am

Recognizing the impact state budget cuts have had on CFISD, the PTO’s from the three elementary schools in Fairfield have joined forces to host their 1st Annual Candy Cane Fun Run for Education on December 10, 2011. With the strong belief education is a community affair, the Ault, Keith, and Swenke Elementary PTOs will use the funds raised to support programs that touch more than 2,700 CFISD elementary students in their neighborhood. To our knowledge, this is the first time CFISD parent organizations from individual schools that typically compete for fund-raising resources have joined together for the greater good of the larger community’s children as a whole.

We believe this event represents so much of what makes CFISD and Fairfield a wonderful place to live. Top notch educational opportunities, a strong sense of community, and dedication to our family and neighbors.

More information regarding registration will be available in the coming weeks through the three school’s websites and newsletters.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

VOLUNTEER

Opportunities AvailableCY-FAIR ISD & COMMUNITY

VOLUNTEERS - A WINNING TEAM!

The Cy-Fair ISD volunteer theme for this year is “Teamwork is Key” in recognition of the combined effort that it takes to ensure student success. Our school district fully understands and appreciates that it takes district administration, teachers, school staff, parents, community partners and volunteers each doing their part to give our children every possible opportunity to reach their full potential.

We are looking for community members who want to become Global Volunteers in order to be a part of our “team” and make a difference in the lives of children. If you are not the parent, grandparent or legal guardian of a student enrolled in the school at which you volunteer, you would be considered a Global Volunteer.

We have many volunteer opportunities available at a school near you. Individuals are needed to perform a full range of activities and we have training available for specific tasks such as vision and hearing screening, tutoring, mentoring, Junior Achievement, and other instructional presentations.

If you have some free time and would like to learn more about becoming a Global Volunteer, please contact Kim Nash at [email protected] or call the CFISD Partners in Education Office at 281-894-3950. And remember:
