Game 3 2 Fairfield vs. Rutgers

Head Coach Andy Copelan11th Season • Bucknell ’032015 CAA Coach of the Year

The 2019 season is Andy Copelan’s 11th at the helm of the Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team. He has posted an 83-70 (.542) record with the Stags and owns an 13-year NCAA Division I head coaching record of 101-85 (.543).

Copelan was named the program’s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan’s completed 10 years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-ranked foe in eight of his 10 prior campaigns with the Stags.

Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on

newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to the CAA Championship Game.Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2015. In four seasons with the Association, the Stags have collected 22

All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox ’18 and 2016 Rookie and co-Player of the Year nods for Colin Burke ’19.

Fairfield student-athletes also continue to gain the national and regional spotlight. Burke and TJ Neubauer ’16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions in 2016 with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season.

Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Neubauer was the highest-drafted Stag since Greg Downing ’07 was tabbed as the sixth overall pick and only First Round selection in program history in 2007. Neubauer was the 10th Stag during Copelan’s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks.

The 2014 edition of the club boasted a final record of 12-4, tying the program’s single-season wins mark. The campaign began with a record-setting 7-0 start and included the team’s first-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game.

Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from 2011-14, including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan’s 2013 club recorded the Stags’ first-ever victory over the nation’s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game.

Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags have won the CAA Team Excellence Award in each of the last two seasons, recognizing their academic performance as the CAA team with the highest GPA. Individually, Will Fox was recognized in 2018 as a USILA Scholar All-American and a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.

Signs of the Stags’ return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program’s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in 2006.

Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan’s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in 2004. In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program’s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth.

His two-year run with the Red Foxes produced nine All-MAAC honorees, including 2004 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year Keith Detelj and 2005 Rookie of the Year Dan Needle.

After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from 2006-08, rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan’s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four.

Copelan also served as the recruiting coordinator for Maryland in his final two seasons, with great success. Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps’ 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was dubbed as a third-best in the country. Individually, Copelan helped the Terps to secure six of 2008’s top 50 high school recruits.

As a student-athlete, Copelan was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Bucknell University. He earned All-Patriot League accolades for his performance on the field in 2003 and was named to the league’s Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons with the Bison.

Scouting RutgersRutgers comes to Fairfield at 2-2, having lost consecutive contests to nationally-

ranked programs. The Scarlet Knights opened the year with wins against Lafayette and St. John’s before falling to then-#19 Army West Point, 10-9, before most recently dropping a 13-7 decision to top-ranked Loyola.

Kieran Mullins and Adam Charalambides have been the keys to the Scarlet Knights offense success this far with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Coming off of a pair of seasons lost to injury, Charalambides was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in his last active campaign at Rutgers in 2016.

Rutgers is 59-of-110 (.536) on the dot. Alex Schoen has taken the most draws en route to a 20-for-43 (.465) showing, with Connor Harryman turning in a solid 23-for-28 (.821) performance and Michael Ott adding a 15-for-35 (.429) effort.

Ben Pounds started the season in the cage, going 2-0 for the Scarlet Knights before ceding the job back to three-year starter Max Edelmann. The 2017 All-Big Ten Second Team goalkeeper held his own in losses to Army and Loyola, notching a .558 save percentage with 23 goals allowed and 29 saves.

All-Time Series vs. Rutgers (Series tied 4-4)Wins for Rutgers in each of the last three seasons have leveled the all-time series

at 4-4. Fairfield went 4-0 against the Scarlet Knights when the squads were ECAC Lacrosse League foes from 2006-09 with Rutgers owning a 4-0 mark in the four all-time non-conference meetings (2004, 2016-18).

Game 3 4 Fairfield vs. Rutgers

‘X’ Marks the SpotDoing his part to keep the attack on the field in Saturday’s

win was Frankie Labetti, who went 21-for-26 at the faceoff X. His 21 wins tied the Fairfield program record established by Fairfield Athletics Hall of Famer Peter Vlahakis ‘04, who also went 21-for-26 against Harvard in 2004. Labetti also set a new Fairfield record with 15 ground balls against the Pioneers, passing the mark of 14 set by Vlahakis in 2002 and matched by Will Fox ‘18 last season.

After his record-setting performance, Labetti has vaulted into 20th in the nation in faceoff win percentage (.592) and sixth in ground balls (9.50 per game).

CAA Rookie of the WeekAfter picking up his first career win in the cage this past

Saturday, James Corasaniti has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week. Corasaniti made 18 saves in his first start for the Stags as Fairfield upended its crosstown foe Sacred Heart, 12-11.

Of Corasaniti’s 18 saves against the Pioneers, four came in the fourth quarter as the Stags turned a two-goal deficit into their first victory of the spring. His save total marked the most for a first-year Fairfield goalkeeper since Michael Kruger ‘07 made 18 saves in games against Penn State and Ohio State in his rookie campaign of 2004.

Topping the ChartsDylan Beckwith set a pair of career highs with five assists

and seven total points in last Saturday’s win at Sacred Heart. Three of his assists came on the Stags’ final three goals of the day to facilitate the comeback victory.

Beckwith currently leads the CAA and ranks fifth in the nation with 3.50 assists per game. His 6.00 points per game also top the CAA and rate sixth in Division I.

Tales of Two HalvesLast Saturday’s win at Sacred Heart was the Stags’ first

victory when trailing at halftime since netting six fourth-quarter goals to rally past Delaware in CAA action on April 29, 2016.

One Game Isn’t EverythingAfter beginning 2019 with a loss to Saint Joseph’s, the Stags

are 15-12 in season openers all-time and 5-6 in their 11 campaigns led by Head Coach Andy Copelan. However, the first game of the spring has not always been an indicator of the season that lies ahead for the Stags. Out of Fairfield’s 13 seasons to conclude with a record above .500, the Stags have started seven of them at 1-0 and six of them at 0-1.

Family TraditionsIn addition to brothers and current teammates Travis

and Trevor Ford, the 2019 roster also boasts the younger brothers of several former Fairfield Lacrosse players. Kyle Borda’s brother Matt Borda was a defenseman for the Stags from 2014-17, and Sam Murphy’s older brother Jack Murphy appeared in the cage for Fairfield from 2012-14.

Furthermore, Brendan Quinn is the younger brother of Maeve Quinn and Brian Reda is the younger brother of Meghan Reda, both of whom won a MAAC Championship in 2015 with Fairfield Women’s Lacrosse.

The Rookie RundownThe 16 new student-athletes joining Fairfield Men’s

Lacrosse this season are 14 true freshmen, one sophomore transfer and one graduate student. They represent every position on the field and hail from nine different states as well as Washington, D.C.

The newcomer to travel the farthest to arrive on campus is Nate Carlton from Wilmette, Illinois. Conversely, sophomore transfer student Jack Kornutik is a local product from Fairfield, who played his high school lacrosse at Rafferty Stadium with Fairfield Prep before spending his freshman campaign at Manhattan College.

Jesuit LacrosseFairfield is 25-24 all-time against in men’s lacrosse against

its fellow Jesuit institutions. The tally includes winning records over Boston College (3-2), Canisius (4-0), Holy Cross (8-1) and Saint Joseph’s (7-3).

Visits to Rafferty Stadium by Saint Joseph’s (Feb. 16) and Georgetown (March 9) mark the two Jesuit squads on the Stags’ 2019 slate.

Points at a PremiumThe Stags’ 5-4 win over Hofstra on April 6, 2018 was

Fairfield’s lowest scoring game (combined goals) since a 4-2 loss at Towson in the 2016 CAA Championship Game. Fairfield last won a game with nine or fewer combined goals in 2015, defeating Hofstra by the same 5-4 count. The Stags are 28-23 in in games where neither team reached double-digit goals during the tenture of Head Coach Andy Copelan.

Coach Cope Hits the Century MarkThe April 6 win at Hofstra was also the 100th career victory

as a head coach for Andy Copelan. Now up to 101 career victories, Copelan ranks second all-time in Fairfield varsity history with 83 wins. He is 10 wins shy of matching Fairfield Athletics Hall of Famer Ted Spencer’s mark of 93 wins earned in his 13-season run with the Stags from 1996-2008. Copelan’s .542 win percentage (83-70) is the best in program history.

Not Settled in SixtyFairfield’s 13-12 overtime loss at #7/8 Villanova on March

24, 2018 was the 24th overtime contest in the Stags’ varsity history. Fairfield is 13-11 all-time when a game goes beyond 60 minutes and 8-5 under Head Coach Andy Copelan. Six of the Stags’ last seven overtime games have been against USILA nationally-ranked teams.

Up NextFairfield’s three-game homestand continues on Tuesday,

March 5 with a visit from former MAAC rival Siena. The Stags and Saints will meet for the first time since 1999 at 3 p.m. with all of the action set for broadcast by the Stags Sports Network on Facebook Live.

Siena is 1-1 this season with a 22-12 home loss to Hobart and a 16-15 overtime win at UMass Lowell on the 2019 ledger. The Saints will not play this weekend as they prepare for their trip to Rafferty Stadium.
