I believe the He is active in the world today but that He masks himself in the vocation of others. He does not reveal himself in glory but rather works quietly and gently in the background, coming to us in His word and sacrament, caring through the work of families and friends, creating order through the work of government and law, healing through the work of doctors and hospitals, teaching us through the work of schools. When we ask God to ‘give us this day our daily bread’ we pray for the whole system, from the rain to the crop to the transport system to the economy that gives us the income to put the food on table that we enjoy. 8 Why Are We Here? Our College’s Vision Statement is to be;A dynamic, Christian, learning community embracing innovation, service, global thinking and excellence.

The College Council has re-affirmed this vision at a recent meeting and rightly so. The statement is concise, picks up on the key elements of what we aim to be here at Faith Lutheran College. It speaks of the 21st century reality that we live in, our global connectedness, the fact that we prepare students for lives of service and the fact that we are both a Christian school and of course a learning community.

My role as CEO of this organisation, as the College Principal, is to bring this vision into reality. To move, if you like, the machinery, the humanity, the thinking and the emphases towards this end. It’s a big job, schools are busy complicated places with many competing agendas both from within and without. We have pressure from government and regulatory authorities, expectations from families, habits and practices of our teachers, financial realities, challenges with our student body and so on.

Schools straddle many domains as well. Educational, pedagogical (how we teach), social, emotional, physical, spiritual, professional, financial, industrial, cultural, the list goes on. I am a firm believer that you can condense all these domains down into two broad areas, Learning and Community.

When I attend to my responsibilities regarding the vision and direction of our college they are the two elements upon which I focus. Below are outlined my intentions with regard to both in the coming years.

LearningDeveloping educational experiences that place our school at the forefront of educational excellence.• Pedagogy: Ensuring our teachers are using research-based, internationally recognised, student-focused

best practice.• Curriculum: Ensuring that our implementation of the Australian Curriculum and Senior School Courses is

done in authentic, connected and engaging ways.• Environment: Ensuring that the physical environment of the college, including classrooms, furnishings,

resources and grounds is focused on learning.

CommunitySharing our vision, goals and successes and building community.• Understanding: Ensuring that the full range of opportunities and activities at the college are known by our

community.• Communication: Ensuring that all avenues of print, online and audio-visual media are maximised to keep

our community informed.• Opportunity: Developing existing events and creating new events for our community to come together in

support, celebration and service of the students in our care.

It’s a mud map to be sure. Each of these points can be expanded further and further again with more and more detail as to who will do it and by when it will happen. There are any number of things that are important at our school that are not directly enunciated in this broad-brush statement as well. But hopefully it gives people a better understanding of what we are doing and what the direction of our college is now and into the near future.

I believe that our God is a hidden God. It’s always God’s work.

Why are we here? Because we are called to a great work in service of those in our care by a gentle God of Love.

SECONDARY SCHOOL Each week our Secondary students attend worship. This is run by a rotation of teachers. I would like to share with you two quotes that have been used in the last two worships:

“Better to light a candle, then to curse the darkness”- Chinese Proverb

“The best criticism of the bad is the practice of the better”- Richard Rohr

I really liked these as they highlight the power we have as individuals to add to the culture of community and always seek to be a positive influence on those around us. This was really evident on Saturday as over 250 students from Year 7 – 12 volunteered at Funfest. I want to personally thank them and their parents who supported them to make Funfest an amazing day.

PHOTO DAY - Photo Day is coming up on Wednesday, 6 June. Please ensure students are in full school uniform and that their hair is neat and tidy.

REDLAND COAST FUN RUN - Earlier this week I sent an email home about the inaugural fun run being held at Raby Bay in August. A few of our teachers and students are already signed up; however, it would be great to see as many of our students and families as possible involved in this community event. So if you are interested sign up and we will see you there for the run.

GBC CROSS COUNTRY - Our Secondary team did really well at the recent carnival achieving some great individual and team results.

CONGRATULATIONS - To Gabby Barr on completing her Certificate III in Individual Support whilst attending her School Based Traineeship at Finlandia Village. Well done.

QUT VICE CHANCELLOR’S STEM CAMP - Year 11 students An Le and Caitlenn Alsop have both been accepted into the QUT Vice Chancellor’s STEM Camp. This is an amazing achievement for both of these students.

UNIFORM - As a College we have been working hard with students in the area of uniform. We really appreciate the parent support that has been provided in ensuring students have their blazers and are not mix and matching uniforms.

JUNIOR SCHOOLFUNFEST – What a day! Despite the rain that decided to hang around much longer than it was forecast our 2018 annual Funfest was a spectacular day for all! We are truly blessed at Faith, with a college community second to none and Saturday was truly a day when our community shone! A huge THANK YOU to every member of Faith, staff, students, parents, grandparents, the planning committee, set up and pack up crew, for your role in making the day such a success.

CROSS COUNTRY – Last week our students competed at the JTAS Cross Country and today are away competing at the annual SLAPS Inter-School Cross Country. We had some very pleasing results and would like to thank all of our squad members for their efforts and commitment to training. While not all members of the squad can be selected, the sportsmanship and improvement shown by some of our students is absolutely super! We are proud of all of you!

CONGRATULATIONS – Hannah Russell and Taylor Bradic both competed in the ATOD Queensland State Scholarships over the weekend. Hannah placed 4th in Sub Junior Ballet and Taylor placed 4th in Sub Junior Tap. These placings allow them to represent Queensland in the ATOD Australasian Scholarships in July, being held in Melbourne this year. Both girls have shown amazing dedication and commitment to training and schoolwork during this very busy time. Well done Taylor and Hannah!

PRINCIPAL’S TOUR – Mr Altmann will host our next Principal’s Tour on Thursday, 7 June at 9:00am. Please invite any friends or relatives who would like to know more about Faith to come along and join us.

SCHOOL PHOTOS – Our Prep – Year 6 class photos will be taken on Wednesday, 13 June. Envelopes with details for ordering will be sent home prior to photo day. Please note there is a time for sibling photos scheduled that morning from 7:30am – 8:30am on the Junior School Campus. All students will need to wear formal school uniform on this day. Preps are to wear their Prep uniform (gold shirt).

RAW Art – Our Year 1 students enjoyed a fabulous art workshop under the expert guidance of the RAW Art specialist teacher. Students loved designing and creating their clay piece that their lucky mums received for Mother’s Day!

Have a great week! Eloise Beveridge and

Greg Tagney

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CAREAt assembly on Friday, the children got a glimpse of what is to come during Vacation Care through a promo video! Have you seen the programs on display around the school? We have some exciting excursions, incursions and days at OSHC to share with you. Jump on the app to view the information letter and program and use this link to book: https://faithoshc.wufoo.com/forms/faith-oshc-junejuly-vacation-care-2018/

On July 2, the Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate will be making way for the new Child Care Subsidy. Have you completed your Child Care Subsidy Assessment? You need to do a Centrelink Child Care Subsidy Assessment now. You can do your assessment through myGov using your Centrelink online account or through the Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. This is important, because if you don’t do your assessment, you may not receive any subsidy from July 2.
