We know you care about kids…
We do, too! That’s why we attempt to ensure that all crafts, toys, and gizmos meet or exceed national safety standards—and are produced by manufacturers that don’t use child labor or abuse their labor force. You can order Group resources knowing that in addition to caring for your kids, you’re also caring for children elsewhere.
Let's keep kids safe!
We strive to provide products that are mechanically reliable and hold together during normal, intended usage. Items are also checked for flammability, and both paint and surface coatings are checked for heavy metals—including lead. You can help your children stay safe by seeing that toys and gizmos are used as designed, for the purposes designed, and that any broken pieces are disposed of promptly and properly. We value your feedback. If you become aware of a problem affecting the safety of any of our products, please inform us immediately.

Welcome to FaithWeaver Friends®!
Why do kids love FaithWeaver Friends®?
It’s because at Friends kids are quickly surrounded by friends! There’s laughter, fun, and memorable moments that make growing in a relationship with Jesus the highlight of the week. Kids want to come to Friends—week after week!
Children rotate through Discovery Centers that feature music, drama, crafts, games, snacks, and surprises. Each Discovery Center provides a unique Bible learning experience. And at every stop, children experience Bible learning in small groups.
In their small-group Circles of Friends, children form friendships with a leader, with other kids, and, most important, with God. Your Friends weekly program connects with all sorts of learners. It appeals to churched and unchurched kids alike. And because children are never too young to have or be a friend, Friends isn’t just for “big kids.” Friends offers a complete preschool program for ages 3 to 6. At Friends, the entire family can be involved as Friends, Circle of Friends leaders, and special guests!
FaithWeaver Friends is all about fun. And about growing closer to Jesus, other kids, and caring adults. At Friends, kids will discover the best friend any of us will ever have—Jesus Christ.
FaithWeaver Friends: It’s what being a kid should be all about.

How to Lead
Discussions Each week after the Music & Memory activ-ity, you are directed to have Circle leaders guide their Circles in discuss-ing several questions. The leaders can find these questions in their FaithWeaver Friends Leader Guide. Ask Circle leaders to open their guides to the appropriate week and use the ques-tions for that week.
Note: In the FaithWeaver Friends Leader Guide, leaders will also find extra questions that are not included in the Music & Memory Leader Guide.

About Music & Memory
At Music & Memory, you’ll help children praise God and hide God’s Word in their hearts using a variety of learning “intelligences” described by Harvard professor Howard Gardner to make Bible memory easier for kids. Some weeks Bible memory takes place through music; other weeks it happens through activities. Either way, not only will your kids memorize God’s Word—they’ll also understand it. To learn more about using these learning intelligences in Bible memory, read Making Scripture Memory Fun (Group Publishing, 1998).
Songs and verses reinforce Bible Points and stories your kids will explore elsewhere in FaithWeaver Friends. Because you’re actively involving kids, the songs and verses you teach will stick with them a long, long time. You’re making an eternal difference!
So celebrate! Laugh! Have fun! And share the love of God with every child who visits Music & Memory!
Introducing Boomwhackers®
Boomwhackers are tuned percussion tubes, color-coded and ready to use. Simply hand the appropriate tubes to your kids, and they’re ready to praise God! Even musically illiterate children quickly discover they can participate in praise songs—even help lead songs! Kids can’t wait to get their hands on these praise tools.
But Wait—I’m Not Really
a Musician!
Not a problem: Boomwhacker songs use just a few simple chords—there’s no need to have a music degree. Boomwhacker chords and placement match the key and style of songs as they are recorded on the Quarterly Drama, Sound Effects & Songs CD, Fall 2015. Children will find it easy to play along with the CD without any other accompaniment.
When a session features a song, you’ll find the lyrics and Boomwhacker instructions on the right-hand page. You’ll see at a glance how Boomwhackers fit.
Many songs require that a Boomwhacker be played in more than one group or chord. (Boomwhackers used in more than one chord are bold.) See “Forgive” on pages 16 and 17, for example. The child with the C# Boomwhacker will play in Chord 1 and Chord 4. The child with the E Boomwhacker will play in Chords 1, 3, and 4, and so on. If possible, give these double-duty Boomwhackers to older or more experienced children.
When a song changes key, using Boomwhackers throughout the song can be compli-cated. We suggest playing Boomwhackers during part of the song only.

Is This You?
To enjoy your role and be successful as a Music & Memory Discovery Center leader, it helps if you…
W enjoy music and children,
W can give clear directions to children,
W believe children should understand and celebrate God’s Word,
W understand that “making a joyful noise” is more important than extracting a perfect performance from children,
W are accepting and supportive of children’s abilities, and
W model God’s love in what you say and do.
The Well-Equipped Wacky BoxA Wacky Box is a box filled with non-tuned percussion instruments, such as tambourines, finger cymbals, rhythm sticks, or maracas.
And it’s easy to stock your Wacky Box for just a few dollars! Make your own “egg shakers” by adding a tablespoon of dry split peas or uncooked rice to plastic eggs (remember to glue the eggs shut!). Wooden dowels make excellent rhythm sticks. Small cardboard boxes make great drums. Use your imagination!
Have enough instruments on hand so everyone has something to play.
The cardinal Wacky Box rule is that you alone determine who gets to pick instruments first. Declare yourself king or queen of the Wacky Box, and you’ll eliminate kids’ grabbing favorite instruments.
How to Echo-Teach a Song
Involve kids in Music & Memory by developing and using visual aids and hand gestures to reinforce lyrics and music. Find a steady beat in each song. Encourage body movement so kids will sway or tap their feet.
And most important, teach music simply with a four-step, echo-teaching technique:
1. Let children hear the song. Sing it with the CD, or sing it a cappella.
2. Ask children to say the lyrics back to you, without pitch but in rhythm, as you say them.
3. Ask children to say the lyrics back to you, adding pitch, as you sing them.
4. Add music, and ask children to join you in singing the song.

Your Contribution to
FaithWeaver Friends®
Children will take their cues from you. If you’re relaxed and enjoying the music and activities at your Discovery Center, they’ll have fun, too. If you’re concerned about
“performance,” they’ll get tense, too. You set the tone.
So make it fun! Encourage children to share and celebrate! Help kids develop servants’ hearts as they take turns and worship God.
Some helpful tips:
W Establish clear, simple rules for using instruments, and restate them occasionally. Set high expectations for behavior, and your kids will meet them!
W Remember that the primary goals of the Music & Memory Discovery Center are to help kids grow in their faith and to encourage healthy relationships. The music and activities are tools to help that happen. Never let pursuing excellence in musical performance sabotage the primary goals.
W Use everything that happens as an opportunity to help kids grow in their rela-tionships with Jesus, their Circle of Friends leaders, and each other.
Weekly Preparation
W Review the week’s instructions, and understand how activities tie to the Bible Point.
W When the session uses a song, prepare a media slide or photocopy the right-hand lyrics page onto an overhead transparency.
W Review the markings on the second page of the music lessons. Be familiar with which Boomwhackers will be used for each song, and know on which beats Boomwhackers will be played.
W Work with the FaithWeaver Friends director to purchase or collect items you need. This manual includes a photocopiable supply list you can post to encourage families and church members to donate supplies. See page 4. Be sure you have Boomwhackers!
W Pray for kids who’ll attend your FaithWeaver Friends program. Ask God to use your Music & Memory Discovery Center to help children grow in their relation-ships with Jesus.
It’s that simple! Serving as a Music & Memory Discovery Center leader is fun, not stressful.

Be Thankful for
God’s Patience
Exodus 17:1-7
God’s people grew thirsty in the desert
and complained to Moses. God told
Moses to strike a rock with his staff,
and water flowed from
the rock.
Use these actions if children don’t think of any:
Line 1: Slowly sweep your left arm out and then sweep your right arm out, leaving both
arms outstretched as if you own all you see.
Line 2: Lie down on the floor and curl up.
Line 3: Use both hands to suggest a gently rip-pling wave motion in front of you.
Ask children to gather in a circle.
SAY In Bible times, many shepherds cared for flocks of sheep. So when Bible writ-ers called God our “shep-herd,” people knew what they meant. Shepherds protected and guided their flocks.

Week 3 • Elementary 13
Psalm 23:1-2
Read aloud the following passage, pausing after each line so
children can think of an action and do it. Encourage creativity!
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters (Psalm 23:1-2).
Applaud kids’ efforts. Ask children to echo the phrases back to
you as they act out the phrases again. Then have kids stand
and repeat the phrase along with you twice.
Have Circle leaders direct their Circles in discussing these questions:
W Like a shepherd providing what his flock needs to live, God gives us many good things. What has God patiently given you?
W Sheep need to rest, just as we do. We’re so busy with school and hobbies and sports. How does God patiently help you rest?
W Sheep won’t drink from fast-running streams, so a shepherd has to find quiet waters for them. How does God patiently care for you?
Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence refers to the ability to use body skills to solve problems or as
a means of self- expression. Children strong in this intelli-
gence will enjoy learning Psalm 23:1-2 through
bodily expressions.

Have children stand with their Circles. As you silently do the motions they choreographed,
let them say the words that accompany the actions. Then ask children to share how they
can show they are thankful for God’s patience.

Before children arrive, draw a simple “#1” hand (a hand with the index finger pointing up—see the sample illustration on this page) as large as possible on news-print. Write “#1” at the tip of the index finger. Tape this, picture side down, to a wall. Place a number of colored markers nearby.
Using the quarterly CD and “Worship Only You” trans-parency, echo-teach* the song. Teach the song before distributing instruments.
*See page 6 for a guide to echo-teaching.
Lead the song once, and help children clap on the beat. Clapping will help the children feel where to play the instruments.
Help children choose instru-
ments from the Wacky Box. If
you don’t have enough instru-
ments, encourage kids to clap
or “play” other parts of their
bodies.
Worship Only You
SAY Our Key Verse says, “Have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3b). The song we just sang says the same thing in different words: “We live to worship only you.” Another way to say this is “God is #1.”
Turn the prepared newsprint page around, and retape it at the kids’ level
on the wall. Think of words that describe God. When you have a word, come up and write it inside this hand. Allow some time.
SAY We just worshipped God in two ways: Singing to him is one way and thinking of what makes God great—what makes him #1—is another. There are many ways and many reasons to worship God!

Work Together for God
Exodus 35:4–36:38
God told his people to build a special tent to
use for worship. The people brought many
gifts and worked together
to build the Tabernacle.
God doesn’t want us to think about him only at Friends or at church. God is with us always—no matter where we are. We can work together for God in all we do.
Have each child put the Colossians 3:17 sticker on a sheet of dark construction paper, and have kids
read the verse aloud together. Then ask each child to create a picture by poking holes in the paper
with the pushpin. Explain that the picture should show an activity the child enjoys doing.
After about five minutes, have children share their artwork by holding it up to the light so the others
in their Circles can see the picture.
Visual-Spatial Intelligence
Children with this intelligence enjoy
expressing themselves through visual arts.

these questions:
W What awesome things has God done for us?
W It was awesome that Balaam could hear God through his donkey. How can you hear God?
Ask Circles to join you in saying: “Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man’s behalf!”
(Psalm 66:5). Repeat several times until
most kids are saying it with you.
Then have children replace the word
awesome in the verse with all or part of
their definition. For example, “Come and
see what God has done, how tremendous
his works in man’s behalf!” Let each Circle
share its new version of the verse.
SAY When we love people, we often do things to help and please them. That’s what it means to do something “on someone’s behalf.” We help someone!
Then have kids in each Circle take turns jumping

Let children spend several minutes sharing, and then have
them return to their Circles and be seated.
Before children arrive, write 1 Chronicles 16:8 on newsprint. Put it up
where children can see it.
SAY When you know something amazing, it’s hard not to tell people about it. If you heard the president would be visiting your school next week, wouldn’t you tell your friends?
We know about someone more important than the president: God! And we can tell the world about him!
David wrote a song about this. Let’s read it together.

Don’t just teach about the Bible. Change lives!
FaithWeaver Friends is a resource God will use to change the lives of the children in your church.
FaithWeaver Friends lessons encourage children to focus on the one most important thing in life: a growing relationship with Jesus. In Luke 10:41-42 (the Martha and Mary visit), Jesus said, “Martha, Martha…you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.” Only one thing. Every week, the activities at FaithWeaver Friends help children focus on this one thing, a growing relationship with Jesus. Whether they’re exploring Bible passages from the Old Testament or the New Testament, learners will be challenged to grow closer to Jesus every week.
You’ll be thrilled at the way FaithWeaver Friends encourages learners to weave faith into life. By providing meaningful ac-tivities, great discussions, and personal challenges, FaithWeaver Friends takes learners past “head knowledge” of the Bible and into heart- and life-change.
FaithWeaver Friends is where kids experience God’s love through friendships. FaithWeaver Friends helps kids deepen their relationships with God, one another, and those who need a helping hand. Through prayer, praise, and journaling, kids deepen their friendship with God. By rotating through activity centers in small groups, kids grow in friendship with one an-other. And through community service projects, kids learn the blessing of being a friend to those in need.
FaithWeaver Friends works great with FaithWeaver NOW and KidsOwn Worship. All three programs follow the same scope and sequence to help you reinforce the Bible message all week long.
