Focus on Our Families

Iowa City Ronald McDonald House

The Ronald McDonald House provides a safe, supportive

“home away from home” for families whose children are

receiving critical medical care in Iowa City.

Published twice annually

My heart goes out to all the families who enter the Ronald McDonald House. I met many different families while there, all who were dealing with so much. I was humbled by the experience and will forever look at life through different eyes. We will forever remember our time spent there.Toni R. Wombaker and Teyawna

Staff

A major responsibility for our Board of Directors is financial oversight, especially for a charity that is 100% funded by private dollars. I’ll tell you a

bit out our oversight.

Each month, House staff circulates to all board members a detailed summary for the preceding month’s financial activity.

The report is prepared by a professional CPA independent of our board

and independent of the accounting firm that performs our annual audit. This independent oversight is extra assurance for staff and board alike.

Financial activity is segmented into the two major categories of revenue and expense. Some 108 separate line items track activity within those two basic categories. Those line items are displayed, for purposes of easy comparison and spotting variances, in side-by-side columns: actual activity year-to-date, annual budget for each line, plus two prior year’s actual activity for each line item.

At a glance, board and staff see totals for current activity, just as we can spot variances in current activity from budget or from prior year’s revenue and expenses.

We pride ourselves on our accountability and squeaky clean financial management. Our monthly budget, income and balance statements to the board are critical components for helping us to meet our fiduciary duties.

Steve BeislerOriginally is from Arlington Heights, Illinois, and lives in Iowa City with his wife,

Jean. A teacher for more than 30 years, Steve started volunteering at the House three years ago. In his spare time, Steve enjoys traveling

and going on volunteer vacations with the Sierra Club and the American Hiking Society. In addition to his part-time job at ACT, Steve also likes to read and does a lot of gardening.

“I read an article in the Press-Citizen concerning the need the Ronald McDonald House has over holiday breaks as

many of the student volunteers go home at that time. Then, after my own surgery, the people at the Ronald McDonald House

were very kind and did not expect that I could do more than what my rehabilitation allowed.”

Hidenori WatanabeA native of Japan, Hidenori is a former emergency medical technician and current phlebotomist who now works at the Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing as

a research assistant. He is hoping to get into an MD/PhD program. In addition to his interests in science, Hidenori likes to read, jog and

play the flute.

“I read a book called On Children and Death written by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross when I was an undergraduate. She listed the Ronald McDonald House as one of many places where volunteers can reach parents and contribute in various

ways. I like meeting interesting parents and lighting up their faces. Showing them that I care and bringing a big smile to

them and the Ronald McDonald House are my missions. It is often not a glamorous job, but I believe the House is the best place to

develop effective communication skills with patient’s families, particularly for potential healthcare providers.

Chloe MelleckerOriginally from Coralville, Chloe is a UI sophomore majoring in Integrative Physiology. Chloe hopes to attend medical school. Outside of school and

volunteering for the House, Chloe works at the Iowa City Public Library and Pagliai’s Pizza. She loves attending Hawkeye football games and

traveling to see her boyfriend play soccer.

“Both my older and younger sisters were born with serious heart problems and had to have surgery as babies. I feel like this helps me relate a little to the guests’ situations because they could be my parents. It also helps because I’ve seen

my sisters grow up and lead completely normal lives, and I know that things can turn out for the best. Volunteering makes

me feel like I am helping someone and making a difference. The House helps me understand what people go through outside the

hospital. It opened my eyes to how diverse the UIHC is and how many people it attracts from other states and countries.”

Volunteer Spotlight

Carson Eggland, Development Director Carson, from Pella, IA, is a 2006 UI graduate in Management &

Organizations, College of Business, plus a minor in

Sociology. Carson brings three year’s experience with the House to this position. Carson first

volunteered at the House, and was later hired as a Night

Manager. He’s helped coordinate several of our special event fundraisers. Carson is now our full-time Development Coordinator.

Heidi Golden Heidi, and her twin sister, Beth, were born and raised in Deerfield, Illinois.

Heidi is currently a UI junior accounting major who

intends to become a CPA. Her smile is constant, big and bright.

Heidi, a pull tab collector since childhood, began

volunteering at the House a year ago. Heidi is a gregarious, upbeat person whose many interests include golf, travel, running, boarding, reading and enjoying outdoor activity.

On the morning of Sunday, September 10th, shooters gathered at Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside to do something they love while supporting a great cause. Participants arranged themselves in teams of five, with each shooter getting the chance to break 150 targets. Over 40 volunteers worked the 15 different stations. Halfway through the event, P.H.A.T. Daddy’s provided a nice warm lunch for everyone. The day concluded with prizes being awarded to the winning teams, silent auction items being handed out, a raffle drawing, and a sincere thank you from a frequent House guest, Michelle Tedrow. In its first year, the event raised over $6,000 for the House.

Piano Celebration a Big Success in Davenport

The annual Piano Celebration was held April 22-23 at Northpark Mall in Davenport. More than 300 student and guest pianists entertained the crowds while raising over $28,000 for the House, a new record. For the second year in row, Melanie Kessler, Bettendorf, was the top student fundraiser.

Planned Giving in Action Having worked here for the past three years as a volunteer and Night

Manager, I have a good understanding of the families we serve and the services we deliver for those families. Part of that understanding is a keen appreciation for the amazing impact

attached to several planned gifts we’ve received in past two years. Those gifts enabled the House to become debt-free much sooner than expected following the 2001 House expansion and renovation. Most importantly, those planned gifts help secure the future for our mission.

This is planned giving in action—the thoughtful generosity of a few individuals assure the future for our direct, tangible services to thousands of family members

Planned giving involves deliberate forethought, action—and often, tax benefits. Your families and heirs may avoid adverse tax consequences with your carefully selected planned gift—even as you assure our charitable mission.

To learn more about planned giving in action, or to let us know that you have already remembered us in your estate planning, please contact Carson Eggland at 319-384-5852 or [email protected].

Governor’s Charity Steer Show Celebrates 24th Year Governor Thomas Vilsack hosted the 24th Annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair August 12. This year 26 steers, all champions from qualifying county shows, were exhibited by an array of Iowa celebrities. This event has raised more than $1.25 million for Iowa’s three Ronald McDonald Houses. Thank you again to Governor Thomas Vilsack for hosting this event, and to former Governor Terry Branstad for conceiving this event. In addition to the many students—and their families—who raise and exhibit these steers, we want to thank Brian Waddingham for pulling this event together each year.

Jesse Weiss, in Yankees pinstripes, and his brother, Aaron Weiss, from Glen Rock, NJ

Jill’s Busy SummerJune 2, 2006, Truman Trey Happel entered this world at 10 lbs. 11.5 ozs., a big boy. Following birth, Truman spent a week in the hospital, due to breathing difficulties and jaundice.

Jill’s already busy universe got a jolt in mid-July when Truman underwent emergency surgery at Children’s Hospital of Iowa to correct a heart defect.

Truman spent eight days in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and pediatric inpatient unit (2JCP). Jill experienced for herself what many of our families go through. Truman is now doing very well. So is Jill, other than for the blizzard of activity that accompanies 3 boys ages 4 and under—and returning to 80% time here at the House.
