Many people think of us as only “hospice” because of their hospice experience. Providing care, comfort and love at the end of life is an important part of our mission.

Did you know that among our patients, typically eight out of 10 are receiving home health or home care services and the other two are receiving hospice care?

You want your loved one up and around as soon as possible. So do we. We give hope to those who wish to stay independent at home and those who prefer to heal at home following an illness, injury or surgery.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE IN SW WASHINGTONAs a community-based nonprofit organization, we have served the healthcare needs of families since 1977. Every day, we care for an average of 600 people who need home care personal services, home health, hospice and bereavement services. We help people throughout Cowlitz, Clark and Wahkiakum Counties, Washington and Columbia County, Oregon.

We have been caring for patients in Clark County since 1988. The need for expansion is great. Over the past five years, our services to the residents of Clark County have increased 300%.

The Board of Directors determined this is the right time for us to build for the future in Clark County since real estate prices and interest rates are low. We purchased property in Vancouver and received an adjacent parcel through a generous donation from Ronald E. and Wendy Wilson and Jan D. Quann.

We are now entering the design phase of the project while we plan to leave our rented office space. Subject to the appropriate approvals, the building will eventually include space for our clinical staff who visit patients throughout Clark County, an onsite Hospice Care Center and space for bereavement support.

As we make plans to care for more families wherever they live in Southwest Washington, we reflect on the support that we receive every day. Your contributions have sustained our agency since 1977 and for this we are sincerely grateful.

IN MEMORIAMFAMILIES HELPING FAMILIESI’d like to share some thoughtful comments from Bill, a registered nurse and anesthetist, who was born and raised in Cowlitz County and now lives in Phoenix. He has had many experiences with family members in our care.

“I cannot say enough good about the quality of care. I have 50 years of experience in healthcare and I have never seen any hospice as great as yours.”

Through the loss of his mother, Bill was inspired to help other families. He has honored her life and the lives of other loved ones with gifts to support our mission. He further went on to say, “I will forever be indebted to Community Hospice for not only the outstanding care the staff gave our mother, but also for what they gave to the family members. The hospice experience tremendously helped lessen our pain, grieving and helped us accept our loss.”

As a nonprofit organization with a mission to support the healthcare goals of each patient and their loved ones, we deliver quality care with the financial support of thoughtful donors like Bill.

IN MEMORIAMGIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITYThe care our patients receive is dependent upon your support. In turn, we find opportunities to help other agencies.

Recently, we upgraded our laptop computers and gave previously used laptops to the Children’s Justice & Advocacy Center. As a new organization in Cowlitz County, they had no budget for computers and we made their start-up a little easier.

“It is really quite something when an 11-year-old child can explain to his parents and his Nana and Papa how important it is to keep memories alive and to talk about your feelings. To us personally, there is nothing more important than ensuring children get the attention and long term support they need to learn to resolve grief issues early.”

IN MEMORIAMWHY WE GIVE LOCALSupporting local businesses and charitable organizations creates a vibrant community and sustains our quality of life.

We seek ways to support other local nonprofit organizations.

For example, our employees went shopping and put together dozens of school supplies for Backpack Buddies in Longview. Backpacks were stuffed and given to children whose families needed a little help getting ready for the new school year.

When we occasionally have an abundance of medical supplies, we share the excess with Lower Columbia CAP and they put it to immediate use with the families they serve.

We support local businesses and other nonprofit organizations as we’ve found that doing so contributes to a vibrant local community.

WISHES GRANTEDA family who spent time in the Hospice Care Center in Longview noticed our comfortable but well-worn furniture and wanted to help. They made a thoughtful donation in their loved ones’ name which allowed us to replace the upholstery on furniture throughout the Hospice Care Center as well as purchase some new chairs.

Other families and groups have given toys and games for Community Day Care in Longview, a TV for the children’s bereavement program, handmade afghans for Community Home Health patients and hundreds of cheerful handmade pillow cases and quilts for hospice patients and grieving children.

TRANSITION COMPANIONS SUPPORT HOSPICE FAMILIESVolunteers have always been an integral part of our support for families. Fourteen experienced hospice volunteers recently completed specialized training through our new Transition Companions program.

When families cannot be with their dying loved one and they do not want their loved one to be alone, our Transition Companions volunteers are called. These treasured volunteers take shifts through the end of life, assuring our patient will not be alone at the time of their passing.

We are now able to provide this support for our hospice patients wherever they live.
