ACCREDITATION AND WHAT IT MEANS TO TCP!

For many organizations and agencies, accreditation is an important element in ensuring that the community they serve understand that they are providing services of the highest quality. Accreditation means to designate officially or to certify requirements of excellence and authority.

For The Children’s Place, accreditation supports the work of the agency in providing the highest quality, evidence based treatments to help heal the youngest survivors of abuse, neglect and trauma.

The Children’s Place is accredited by The Joint Commission, a national organization that ensures the programs and in particular, the delivery of the programs offered are held to the highest national standards for clinical care.

The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs throughout the United States. It is recognized nationally as a gold standard; a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. The Children’s Place has been accredited by The Joint Commission since 1995 and is currently in the process of being reviewed for re-accreditation for an additional three year period.

Ann Thomas, Vice President of Programs states,” Accreditation is a voluntary process that helps the agency provide treatment based on best practice guidelines. Joint Commission standards create a process of accountability regarding the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of treatment. Achieving Joint Commission accreditation, is a major accomplishment for The Children’ Place, as it is a highly recognized indicator of quality services.”

The accreditation process is very detailed and thorough with the general purpose to ensure that the agency is maintaining the highest standard of care both in the delivery of services and in the implementation and record keeping of those services. The agency undergoes an external evaluation by recognized experts that provide impartial evidence of the quality of care, treatment or services delivered to the children and families served.

Healing the youngest survivors of abuse, neglect and trauma.

Every three years The Children’s Place under goes an accreditation process with The Joint Commission to ensure we meet certain national guidelines for excellence. We know that we do a great job for the kids and families we serve but this gives us an opportunity to show the primary accreditation agency in the country that we are a leader in providing young children with a full therapeutic range of services.

Joint Commission visits hundreds of facilities throughout the year many of which have thousands of clients and staff members. We are held to the same standards as those much larger agencies and we are happy to be held to those standards. I will put our 48 staff members up against any agency when it comes not only to the quality of our programs, but also the passion they have for service to others.

We have spent several months preparing for our Joint Commission visit but when our surveyor visited this week we told everyone to just do their jobs like they do every day. No special effort was required since I like to think we provide the same level of service day in and day out, regardless of whether we are under the microscope of a Joint Commission review.

I am pleased to report that the visit went very well. We had many great discussions with our surveyor and learned about other agencies and strategies they have to improve service. We also received feedback on our program and ways we could get even better.

The best part of the visit was the opportunity to have several of our teachers and therapists talk to the surveyor about what we do every day to make life better for our kids. Joint Commission’s purpose is to help make us even stronger and to confirm what we already know- that we have a unique group of individuals who are passionate about helping children.

I am confident our mission was accomplished and continues to be accomplished.

ACCREDITATION... (cont. from p1)

During the three day site visit, a surveyor is on site reviewing policies and procedures. The surveyor will meet with members of the Board of Directors and senior staff to open and close the site visit. During the visit, will also walk through the building and observe the physical plant and the interaction of teachers and clinical staff with children; the interaction of teachers and volunteers and interaction of volunteers with children. The surveyor ensures that classrooms and clinical spaces are being maintained in a manner to ensure safety as well as confidentiality. In addition, records are reviewed and therapists and teachers are interviewed to ensure the treatment plans are in place, notes are up to date and all proper documentation is maintained which ultimately ensures that there is a continuum of care. The surveyor will also look at the role of volunteers and ensure that volunteers are being thoroughly screened, offered orientation and provided with continuing education to ensure that the children being served are in safe and caring hands.

Achieving accreditation provides the agency with an opportunity for an in-depth review of all safety procedures and care delivery processes. These policies and procedures are regularly monitored for compliance in line with the requirements of accreditation. As staff often note, “sometimes it’s nice to have the pressure of someone else checking you to make sure everything is working well.”

While the agency always strives to provide the highest quality of care to all children receiving services, the accredited status from The Joint Commission confirms the quality and sets a standard that all staff strive to achieve each and every day. The Children’s Place is proud of its accomplishment of continuing accreditation, but more importantly proud of its daily accomplishments working to heal the very youngest survivors of abuse, neglect and trauma.

At the time of publishing - The Children’s Place completed a site visit from The Joint Commission by Mr. Jack Clark and were informed that they have retained their accreditation for an additional three years.

PARTY AT THE PLACE

Under the tent at The Children’s Place was the place to be on Thursday, September 19! Party for the Place hosted by The Angel Board returned to The Children’s Place for a second year.

Together with great appetizers and cocktails, guests were able to tour The Children’s Place. Teachers, therapists and staff were on hand to share what happens every day when the children arrive and answer any questions. It was a wonderful opportunity to see and hear first-hand the stories of the children in our community that need help to heal from abuse, neglect and trauma. The tour also shared the different programs offered the different services within the programs that ensure a holistic approach is taken for the best interest of the child and family.

Unfortunately, the 19th was also the same night the monsoon hit Kansas City, causing flash flooding throughout the city. While we didn’t have to deal with flash flooding, we did battle gail force winds, lightening and heavy rain.

While we were able to save the food and drink and simply move the party indoors, it did put a damper on a fabulous night. If you braved the weather to make it to the tent, we thank you. If you didn’t - don’t worry we’ll try it again next year! We anticipate warm weather in 2014!!

Very special thank you to The Angel Board for hosting yet another wonderful evening that also helped raise funds for the agency. In particular, thank you to the co-chairs for the event, Ann Tinsman, Dallas Pioli and Diane Clarkson, who gave so much of their time and talent to make the evening memorable. Your hard work and commitment is truly appreciated.

We do look forward to opening our doors again next year and sharing with you the work that happens every day to create little miracles that help our young children regain the childhood that was taken from them.

HOLIDAY ADOPT-A-FAMILY

For many years one of the larger projects we take on at The Children’s Place is our Adopt-A-Family program. Each year we reach out to the families we serve here at the agency and most recently as need has increased, we have also reached out to other families in our community that need help.

For most families, the holidays are a magical time of year. It is a time for family, giving and receiving, celebrating and happiness. Unfortunately, for families with limited resources, the stress of the holiday season can overshadow this happy time. To help our families focus on enjoying one another, we need your help and that of many in our community to help them get what they need for the holiday season.

The Adopt-A-Family program asks that you provide each member of the family with at least one new, wrapped gift and a grocery store card for the family to purchase items for their holiday meal. Once you sign up as a sponsor, we will ask you what size family you are comfortable helping and will match the family accordingly. Drop off day for all gifts is Saturday, December 14 from 9 a.m. - noon. at The Children’s Place.

We hope you will consider being a sponsor of our Adopt-A-Family program. For more information or to sign up as a sponsor go to: childrensplacekc.org/ways-to-help/volunteer/ or call 816-363-1898 and ask for the Adopt-A-Family program.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

The first annual beach volleyball tournament was played on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Beach Volleyball in Martin City.

At tip off 25 teams had shown up ready to play in the hot sun and sand. There were some great hits, spikes and falls even with the heat of the day - but fortunately everyone worked hard to stay hydrated!

All proceeds from the tournament, that was hosted by The Young Advisory Board, go to support the programs of The Children’s Place.

In fact, it was so much fun we’ve decided to do it again next year - start putting your team together now and come up with a cool name. The tournament next year will be on Saturday, August 9, 2014 - same time, same place!
