Dear Friends –

Judging from a quick glimpse at this issue of eVue, fall is approaching and with it a whirl

of activity at Longue Vue. From the inaugural Grand Golden Gamble event to very special

birthday teas, there are abundant reasons to drop by and enjoy the beauty of Longue Vue.

On September 28, three winners split $5,000 in gold coins during the Grand Golden

Gamble reverse raffle at Longue Vue. Raffle ticket holders will enjoy bountiful food and

beverage, plus the excitement of watching the 325 raffle ticket holders reduced to the

final three tickets remaining in the hopper.

Over the years, I’m sure you have enjoyed Trailer McQuilkin’s wildflower sculptures Mrs. Stern commissioned in

1972, that are on permanent exhibit in the Playhouse. McQuilkin’s latest wildflower sculptures are now on view

and available for purchase in the gallery through October 5.

Longue Vue will give shoppers a jump start on the holidays at Gracious Gifts in Pretty Packages presented by

Loretta Potapenko, buyer extraordinaire for The Shop at Longue Vue. Then, October 25 brings Prospect.3 to Longue

Vue with the ground breaking work of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and filmmaker Camille Henrot.

This year’s Essence of Style Design Symposium features Julia Reed and Bunny Williams. The event kicks off on

November 5 with a designer reception in the exquisite Old Metairie home of Jennifer and Kenny Rabalais, followed

by Julia and Bunny’s presentation, a silent auction and luncheon at the Audubon Tea Room on November 6.

And of course, Mario Villa will be back in November with one-of-a-kind gifts for the holidays. The gates of Longue

Vue are open and we’re expecting you...often!

LONGUE VUE ANNOUNCES THE 2014 ESSENCE OF STYLE DESIGN SYMPOSIUM

Since 1991, Longue Vue has hosted the Essence of Style Design Symposium featuring top speakers in the fields of design,

horticulture and art. This year, Longue Vue welcomes authors and renowned interior designers Julia Reed and Bunny

Williams for a lively discussion entitled, “One Man’s Folly: The Exceptional Houses of Furlow Gatewood and the Inspiration

Behind Them.” Entering its 23rd year, the annual design symposium educates audiences about trends in interior and

landscape design and generates revenue to support Longue Vue’s educational programming. The two-day event kicks off

with a Designer Reception at the Old Metairie home of Jennifer and Kenny Rabalais on Wednesday, November 5 from 6 to 8

p.m. and a panel discussion, luncheon and silent auction of items and merchandise from local businesses at the Audubon

Tea Room on Thursday, November 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets to the Designer Reception are $150. Tickets to the Design Symposium are $100 for Longue Vue members and $125

for nonmembers. Sponsorship and ticket packages are available. To learn more about the Design Symposium, contact Jen

Gick at 504.293.4723 or [email protected].

TRAILER MCQUILKIN’S WILDFLOWERS BLOOM AT LONGUE VUE

On August 7, Longue Vue unveiled Wildflowers, a botanical sculpture exhibit featuring works of New Orleans native, Trailer

McQuilkin. McQuilkin is a self-taught artist who began experimenting with trompe l’oeil art in 1969. In 1972, pieces of

his work were brought to the attention of Longue Vue founder Edith Stern. She commissioned 20 sculptures that are

permanently on display in the estate’s Playhouse.

The sculptures incorporate sheet copper, copper wire, oil paints and natural materials that endure several artistic and

technical processes resulting in lifelike masterpieces. Spectators are often surprised that what they see before them is not

real; McQuilkin’s work involves uncompromising attention to detail and use of materials such as twigs and pinecones to

create a natural environment.

Guests also had the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of McQuilkin’s botanical beauties during an Artist Talk+Tour on

August 12. Wildflowers is on display in the main gallery through October 5, with select pieces available for purchase. For

more information about the exhibit, contact Lenora Costa at 504.293.4712 or [email protected].

LONGUE VUE PARTNERS WITH PROSPECT.3 FOR CITYWIDE EXHIBITION

Longue Vue will host the works of Shigeru Ban and Camille Henrot during the Prospect.3 New Orleans exhibition taking

place from October 25, 2014 through January 25, 2015. Ban is known for building one of the first post-Katrina houses in the

Lower Ninth Ward for the Make it Right Foundation. His installation in Longue Vue’s Gate House will include photographs,

documentation and models of his projects.

While Ban’s works are focused on the here and now, Henrot’s works focus on world history. Her videos and animated films

combine drawn art, music and occasionally scratched or reworked cinematic images. Among her works on display in the

main house’s gallery is a 13-minute video that tells the story of the world from creation.

For more information about the Prospect.3 exhibition at Longue Vue House and Gardens, contact Lenora Costa at

504.293.4712 or [email protected].

SUMMER ‘SCAPES 2014 SUMMER CAMP SUCCESS

Another great summer of fun-filled, creative camps has concluded at Longue Vue. This summer, a total of 106 campers

created crafts, met new friends and learned about a variety of topics including art, nature and theater. Check out what

some parents had to say about Summer ‘Scapes this year:

“We love your camp and plan to do it again next summer. My son loves learning about plants and the outdoors. So far, he has attended five summer camps. He has proclaimed Longue Vue as his favorite!!”

“The camp was engaging and fun. My son thoroughly enjoyed himself. The counselors and staff were both professional and courteous. You could tell that they really cared about the children and their experience at camp. I would highly recommend the camp to others.”

We want to thank teachers, camp staff and the ten teenagers from local high schools who volunteered over 490 hours of

service to make Summer ‘Scapes a success. Information on the 2015 camp program will be available at the end of January

on www.longuevue.com.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITIES 2014-2015: THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

School is back in session and so is Cultivating Communities! Since 2001, Longue Vue has partnered with the Waldo Burton

Memorial Home for Boys to implement a unique educational outreach program designed to engage students in a three-

part curriculum that includes farming, entrepreneurship and philanthropy. Throughout the school year the students learn

to sow seeds, propagate herbs and plant English peas, carrots, kale, green garlic, shallots, mustard greens and parsley.

Students also participate in activities that build their knowledge of sales, mathematics, language and social skills.

For the 2013-2014 academic year, the students sold fresh vegetables, pesto and hummus made from their crops at local

markets. The monies raised were then donated to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA).

This year, the boys will again grow crops in the Walled and Discovery Gardens to sell at local farmers markets. Save the date

for Tuesday, November 4 when Hollygrove Market and Farm hosts its market day.

Cultivating Communities is supported by Peggy and Jack Laborde and The Herb Society of America New Orleans Unit . To

learn more about the program visit www.longuevue.com.

A FALL FULL OF BLESSINGSLongue Vue House and Gardens had the tremendous opportunity to host The Herb Society of America New Orleans Unit

on August 28 for its 2014 “Blessing of the Herbs” commemorating St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners. This year’s

blessing was led by Father Randy Roux in the Walled Garden followed by a discussion on “Herbal Liqueurs” in the Playhouse

with Linda Franzo and Audrey Driscoll. Participants sipped creatively-crafted spirits with hints of lavender and blackberry

cinnamon basil flavors.

Longue Vue is honored to host this annual celebration for the community as we prepare for a fall full of flowers. When

visiting, keep an eye out for:

In September Gomphrena, Texas star mallow, Awapuhi ginger, Lantana, Goldenrod ‘Fireworks’, White American

Beautyberry, Cut-leaved Coneflower, Ironweed. In October Boltonia, Muhly grass, Florida anise, Abelia, Bird of

Paradise, Swamp Sunflower, Wahoo, Trailing Violet, Yaupon Holly, Cosmos. In November Alyssum, Clockvine,
