I was lucky to have more than 25 years of one-on-one teaching with wonderful mentors. My childhood teacher, Laura Truitt, awakened me to the beauty, intensity, and power of classical music. My two undergraduate teachers, Michael Zenge and Phyllis Rappeport, deepened my understanding of the structure and color of music. When I started with them, I didn’t really know what a phrase was. When I finished, I felt as if I could “speak music” for the first time. Another teacher, Veda Kaplinsky, gave me the confidence to face any technical challenge that came my way. I chose the University of Wisconsin-Madison for graduate school because of Howard Karp. I first heard Howard perform in 1986 in a recital with his cellist son Parry in Chapel Hill, NC. I loved his playing—such beauty of sound, such compelling phrasing—I felt I was listening to a great orator deliver a moving speech. (Parry was no slouch, either.) Both of my undergrad teachers had studied with Howard, and thought I would benefit from working with him. Off I went to Madison. Howard was an incredibly inspiring teacher for me. He felt that music was a gift of the gods to be cherished and honored, and that no performance could ever reveal the full greatness of the masterworks of the literature—but it was our duty to strive for that ideal, to give it our greatest efforts of mind, body, and soul. More than anything, Howard helped me find my unique, authentic voice as an artist. It is a rare teacher who does not try to reshape students in his or her mold, but Howard honored the particular gifts of each of the pianists under his care. Sometimes I would ask him a question about a phrase I was struggling with, and he would reply, “Live with it awhile, trust your instincts, you’ll find the answer.” At first this advice frustrated me, but through the struggle I developed a confident, individual understanding of the music that has remained with me to this day. Without Howard Karp, BDDS would never have come into being. He brought me to Madison, helped me find the courage of my convictions, and encouraged all of my artistic efforts. Howard died on June 30th, 2014, the day after the final concert of the 23rd season of BDDS. Ironically, our season theme was about departures of all kinds. For me, his will be deeply felt. Classical music performance is one of a dwindling number of professions taught almost exclusively through the apprenticeship model.

“I think BDDS is the sort of thing that makes Madison a

good place to live.”—Stephany East, BDDS Fan

“I find the Bach Dancing and Dynamite programs extremely

well planned and then extremely well executed. And

I am not alone, as repeated standing ovations demonstrate.

To miss music and performances as fine as these is to cheat

    yourself. And that just doesn’t

make sense, does it?” —– Jacob Stockinger,

    The Well-Tempered Ear

I found BDDS’ 2014 season wonderful and extraordinary for three reasons: First, their

programming is substantial, fresh, provocative, and daring.

Secondly, BDDS has created an ensemble of extraordinarily

talented musicians, some of whom have been returning to Madison for years. The third

attribute that makes BDDS so extraordinary is the insight and

artistic flair of their dynamic and energetic artistic directors,

Stephanie Jutt and Jeffrey Sykes, and their executive

director, Samantha Crownover.—Robert Morse, BDDS Fan

FLAUTISTICOMUSIC FROM LATIN AMERICA & SPAIN8PM, FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 2015 | OVERTURE CENTER, PROMENADE HALL: $25

Stephanie Jutt presents a concert celebrating Latin American and Spanish culture. The evening will feature the music of Spain, Argentina and Venezuela, with spoken word, tango, and original art by Carolyn Kallenborn. Artists include dancers Ariel Juarez and Jacques and Maria Saint-Cyr and soprano Yanzelmalee Rivera, among others.

    RAVES FROM OUR FANS

    REMEMBERING SUSAN HORWITZSAMANTHA CROWNOVER

BDDS lost one of its board members and most fervent supporters to cancer in June. Susan Horwitz was curious about everything she heard, and she challenged the way we presented chamber music. She encouraged us to reach out to children, to re-invent the dinner drawing, to play more Piazzolla! She made sure we never went hungry at

our late-afternoon board meetings, and she and her husband, Tom, hosted many celebratory dinners at their home.

As her cancer advanced, she held meetings at her bedside. We talked BDDS business and about music she was listening to.

What makes Susan extraordinary to me, though, is how she kept growing, learning, and living until her last days. She squeezed as much as she could from life, traveling the world, advocating for women, playing piano, working and teaching full-time as a computer scientist. Losing a member of our family is hard, but we are grateful for knowing her. Susan and many of her family and friends have come together to sponsor music and musicians for years to come.
