The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library’s 15-star flag is one of only a handful still in existence to have been made between 1794 and 1818. Donated in 1995 by John E. Carver, it had been passed down in his family for generations. Makers sewed this flag, which measures approximately 11 feet by 12 3/4 feet, to fly over a military fort (or garrison) or on a vessel, marking them as U.S. property. Unfortunately, we do not know who made it or where it flew.

The Museum’s 15-star flag is made of wool bunting, a lightweight, mildew-resistant, coarsely woven fabric. The blue section, called the canton, is colored with indigo. This dye, common during the late 1700s and early 1800s, provided a deep, permanent color that rarely faded. The red stripes are dyed with an unknown colorant. The stars are made out of linen. In 1996 and 1997, conservators worked 500 hours to stabilize the flag and prepare it for display. First, they vacuumed it and then gently washed it to remove as many stains a possible. They next stabilized areas of the fabric loss with patches, using material dyed as closely as possible to the flag’s colors. They also carefully removed old repairs that were pulling on the fabric. Finally, a supportive backing was sewn to the flag. A slightly angled backboard supports the flag in it specially constructed case, and the low lighting helps preserve it for generations to come.

Congress approved the first official U.S. flag in 1777, resolving that it have “thirteen stripes, alternate red and white” and that there be “thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” On January 13, 1794, President George Washington (1732-1799) signed the Second Flag Act.

A large 15-star flag American flag is one of the Museum’s most valued treasures.

It mandated 15 stars and 15 stripes–the number of American states at the time–but did not specify design details like the arrangement of the stars. You may notice that the Museum’s flag has only 14 stripes. One was removed before we received it, probably due to deterioration, or possibly a souvenir seeker. The 15-star, 15-stripe design remained official until 1818, when legislators adopted the 20-star flag, choosing to add one star for each new state, while keeping the number of stripes at 13 to represent the original number of states. The same basic design is used today.

Maryland Attorney Francis Scott Key is best known as the author of “The Star Spangled Banner. “ Shortly before the Battle of Baltimore began, Key met with the British to negotiate the release of his acquaintance, prisoner Dr. William Beanes (1749-1828). Although Key secured Beanes’ release prior to the battle, the British held the men for several days because they had learned of the British Plan for an imminent attack.

Anchored on a vessel eight miles down the Patapsco River from Fort McHenry, the men watched the battle with a spyglass. Early in September 1814, after the bombardment ended, Key looked for the flag at the fort. When he saw it, he began to write his poem on the back of a letter in his pocket. He later finished it in Baltimore.

The poem was then married with a melody by London composer Stafford Smith, known as “To Anacreon in Heaven.” As opposed to the popular belief that this was written as a drinking “pub” song, the melody actually originated around 1776 at a meeting of the Anacreontic Society, an amateur gentlemen’s music club in London. The song served as an after-dinner transition between a professional orchestral concert and participatory group singing.

ILL. HARRY A. VOLKMAN, 33°

(1926-2015)

LET IT BE KNOWN BY ALL, Ill. Harry A. Volkman, 33°, was summoned by the Supreme Architect of the Universe to eternal refreshment in the paradise of God on August 20, 2015.

Harry Albert Volkman was born on April 18, 1926, in Medford, Massachusetts, to parents Harry Michael Volkman and Elsie Mildred (Crispin) Volkman.

Harry served as an artillery specialist during World War II. It was there he learned to calculate the wind’s effect on artillery shells for firing accuracy. He then studied math and physics at Tufts University, then meteorology at Tulsa University. In 1952, Harry broadcast the first televised tornado warning. He was a fixture on local Chicago television with a weather forecasting career that spanned fifty-five years and four television stations.

Harry married Dolores Ann Bray in 1951. Their union produced four children: Ronald, Gerald, Edward and Charlotte. He married his second wife Anita in 1989 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Harry petitioned Des Plaines Lodge, No. 890, A.F. & A.M., in Des Plaines, Illinois, and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in May, 1981.

He joined the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago as a member of the Spring Reunion Class on April 30, 1983. In recognition of his outstanding commitment to humanity and to Scottish Rite, Harry was coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Thirty third Degree Mason, on September 29, 1992.

Harry’s other memberships and associations include, but are certainly not limited to, Wheaton Chapter, No. 242 R.A.M.; DuPage Council Cryptic Masons; Apollo Commandery, No. 1; Red Cross of Constantine; DeMolay Legion of Honor, Frank S. Land Preceptory; and Medinah Shriners.

In 1971, Harry received the Terwilliger-Dorland Award from Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity at Northern Illinois University, recognizing Harry’s promotion of education in Northern Illinois. In 1985, Harry received the American Legion Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding service in the advancement of the Legion’s programs dedicated to God and country.

This year marked Brother Harry’s thirty-second year as a member of the Masonic Fraternity.

LET IT BE KNOWN BY ALL, Ill. Walter W. (Billy) Pierce, 33°, has been summoned by the Supreme Architect of the Universe to eternal refreshment in the paradise of God on Friday, July 31, 2015.

Walter William Pierce was born on April 2, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, to parents John Walter Pierce and Julia Elizabeth Kohn. Even before graduating from Highland Park High School in Michigan, Billy was signed to play for the Detroit Tigers, where he made his major league debut in June of 1945. He went on to play eighteen major league seasons, primarily with the Chicago White Sox and wrapping up his career with the San Francisco Giants. Billy led the American League in complete games three times and to wins, ERA and strikeouts once each. The White Sox retired his number 19 in 1987 and unveiled a statue in his honor at U.S. Cellular Field in 2007. He is enshrined as a member of the Michigan Hall of Fame, the Chicago Hall of Fame and the White Sox Hall of Fame.

Billy married Gloria McCreadie in 1949. Their union produced three children: William Reed Pierce, Patricia Elaine Pierce M. Crowley and Robert Walter Pierce.

Billy petitioned Evergreen Park Lodge #1171, A.F. & A.M., in Tinley Park, Illinois, and was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on August 28, 1971.

He joined the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago as a member of the Fall Reunion Class on November 1, 1971. Billy faithfully served the Scottish Rite in many ways. In recognition of his outstanding commitment to humanity and to Scottish Rite, Billy was coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Thirty third Degree Mason, on August 30, 2011.

Billy’s other memberships and associations include, but are certainly not limited to, long time Chairman of Medinah Shriners Athletic Committee, Shriners International, Chairman of the Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities and as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church.

This year marked Brother Billy’s forty-fourth year as a member of the Masonic Fraternity.

The passing of our Brother from the cares and troubles of this transitory existence has removed another link in the fraternal chain that binds us together. May we who survive him be more strongly bound in the ties of union and friendship.

Fall 2015 • ScottiSh Rite NewS 7

At the beginning of the 19th century, the United States was a developing nation. Although twenty years had passed since the end of the American Revolution, the country had not yet achieved economic independence. The French Empire, ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte, controlled most of mainland Europe. Great Britain was among the few nations free from French domination. With trade suspended between the warring countries, neutral America had a commercial advantage: her merchants could supply both sides.

Closely entwined with the questions about the rights of neutrals to trade with European belligerents, the British practice of impressing American merchant sailors stands as one of the central grievances leading up to the War of 1812. By 1811, the British Royal Navy had impressed at least 6,000 mariners who claimed to be citizens of the United States. In addition to impressments, Americans were dismayed by British agitation of the native population on the western frontier. Congress declared war on June 18, 1812. Some of the major event of the War included:

• The White House and Capitol were burned to the ground during the invasion of Washington, D.C. First Lady Dolley Madison garnered fame for saving a portrait of George Washington before flames engulfed the president’s home.

• In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star Spangled Banner” while watching the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor.

The War of 1812 ended in a stalemate. The treaty of Ghent signed on December 24, 1814, returned all territorial conquests made by the two sides. It did not address the issue of impressment, one of the major causes of the war. However with the downfall of Napoleon and peace in Europe, the Royal Navy no longer needed so many sailors. Despite the inconclusive ending, later-day Americans often regarded the post war period as prosperous. With the advent of peace came decades of stability, improved diplomatic relations and economic growth, the so-called “Era of Good Feelings.” A sense of self-confidence pervaded the nation, and it inspired

the western expansionism that characterized the rest of the nineteenth century. The War of 1812 allowed the new nation to break free of its colonial past, and told the nations of Europe that a new player had emerged on the world stage. As British diplomat Augustus J. Foster acknowledged at war’s end, “The Americans . . . have brought us to speak of them with respect.”

A special thanks to the USS Constitution Museum for providing this information.

FUN FACTSThe War of 1812 lasted long after 1812. The final battle

took place in January 1815.

The British navy was the biggest in the world at the time,

with more than 600 ships. How many did the U.S. Navy

have? Only eighteen sailable ships.

The saying “Don’t give up the ship!” comes from the

War of 1812. Those were the dying words of Captain

James Lawrence of the USS Chesapeake as his ship was

captured by Britain’s HMS Shannon.

The final battle of the war took place after the peace treaty was signed. News of the Treaty of Ghent, which was signed on December 24, 1814, didn’t reach all of the United States for several weeks. So British and Americans battled in New Orleans on January 8, 1815. The United States — led by General Andrew Jackson — defeated the much larger British force.

Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago and Scottish Rite Scholarship Award’s Night

Over sixty scholarships we awarded to students from across the Chicagoland area during the Valley of Chicago’s Scholarship & Learning Center Recognition Night. Recipients were headed for schools all over the country. Scholarship Committee Chairman Lance Welter and Northern Illinois University alum played college fight song music as students lined up on stage to receive their award. “It was a big thrill for each student receiving a scholarship. It looked like their feet didn’t touch the ground because of how excited they were. That is the reason we do this important charity work. To help young people become the adults they want and we need them to be,” said Scholarship Committee Chairman Lance Welter.

Not to be outdone, the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Metropolitan Chicago also participated in the evenings festivities. Special presentations were made to staff and students by Chairman Bruce DeMent, 33°. Attendees were educated on what the Center does and the youth it serves. It treats children with Dyslexia free of charge from all over the Chicagoland area and is one of the leading Dyslexia centers in the region. A special thanks to all the excellent volunteers and staff who serve this important organization and participate in the vital work they do every day to help children overcome this difficult disorder.
