WELCOME

Following its Mission Statement, “the promotion and the dissemination of the language and the culture of Spain and that of Spanish speaking countries”, Instituto Cervantes is offering a wide-ranging program for this Fall with proposals that address the cultural and linguistic richness of the Spanish language and culture from different angles. Art, literature, critical thinking, performing arts, music, cinema, gastronomy events are included in this extensive proposal, which, along with the vast academic program offered and the richness of the Jorge Luis Borges library, they make Instituto Cervantes a must when approaching the world of Spanish with all its nuances.

A snapshot of the program highlights would include the poetic journey León Felipe takes us through: Who am I?; the International Book Fair of the City of New York (FILCNY), the first edition of which kicks off at Instituto Cervantes; the tribute paid to the scholar Ángel Alcalá; the sessions on the Spanish exile, or the excellent selection of films from the “Women in cinema” series, to name a few proposals.

Can you think of a better way to understand Spanish Culture than through its language? To this effect, Instituto Cervantes offers a solid language program for adults and children alike, which has become a milestone. Its courses and the expertise of its teachers, who share with the teaching community through their teacher-training courses are a must. Instituto Cervantes also offers you the possibility to certify your level of Spanish, by means of its reliable and valid evaluation systems, DELE and SIELE, in compliance with international quality standards.

The Jorge Luis Borges library is the ideal place to get to know and enjoy all the novelties in literature, essays, films, music and the numerous resources available to students and teachers of Spanish.

LEÓN FELIPE: WHO AM I?

Wednesday, September 11th to Thursday, October 10th

Instituto Cervantes. Free Admission. RSVP [email protected] Hours M-F: 10 am-7 pm. Sat: 10 am-2 pm

Opening: Wednesday, Sept 11th 7pm Sept.11th

The exhibition León Felipe. Who am I? is a journey through the poet’s life and poetic universe through almost a hundred objects, including photographs, paintings, drawings, books and manuscripts. Unclassifiable writer, pharmacist, librarian, actor and translator, Leon Felipe became, after the Civil War, ambassador and patriarch of the Spanish exile in Mexico, and thoughout his wanderings, he ended up in the city of New York where he went along with great figures like Fernando de Los Ríos, José Camprubí, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Ángel del Río, Federico Onís, García Maroto and Federico García Lorca. This selection of pieces and materials are directly related not only to the figure of León Felipe and its impact in the literary field, but also to the historical context in which he had to live in.

Commemorative event of the 50th Anniversary of the author’s death.

This 14th Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial aims to place the accent on the notion of living as what underpins architecture and makes cities more human. This is explained not only through the various functional briefs, but also through the quality and the attributes of the spaces. More Human, More Living shows the recognition of a specialized jury to the best works of architecture and urbanism carried out in Spain and abroad by Spanish architects during the years 2016 and 2017. The exhibition also shows the recognition of research works linked to industrial development of the sector and the dissemination of architecture and research. The exhibitors of this show, as characters speaking from their own voice, bring the visitor the most human image of each awarded work. The authors share their stories while the visitors observe how people inhabit it, and how the work is capable of humanizing the place that it inhabits.

art talk

As a nod to Havana’s 500th anniversary, leading art historian José Ramón Alonso Lorea takes us on an illustrated voyage to the 1940s, when Cuba’s modern art movement was consolidated. The work of these artists was widely promoted by arts patron María Luisa Gómez Mena, founder of Galería del Prado, pivotal in garnering international recognition for Cuban contemporary art. The leading artists among this group were Amelia Peláez, Fidelio Ponce, and Carlos Enríquez(the first generation), and René Portocarrero, Cundo Bermúdez, Mariano Rodríguez, Mario Carreño, Luis Martínez Pedro and Felipe Orlando (the second generation). The continued productivity of both generations fostered the consolidation of a modern Cuban art and defined the creation of a regional and luminous oeuvre, which has since been referred to by critics as the “Escuela de La Habana”.

the Daughter’s tale is an unforgettable story of love and redemption by Armando Lucas Correa, the bestselling author of the German Girl. Elise Duval, eighty years old, receives a phone call from a woman recently arrived from Cuba bearing messages from a time and country that she’s long forgotten. Inspired by one of the most shocking atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, the 1944 massacre of all the inhabitants of the village of Oradour-Sur-Glane in the south of France, the Daughter’s tale is a beautifully crafted family saga of survival and hope against all odds. Correa, who is Editor-in-Chief of People En Español, will be interviewed by the widely read Cuban-American journalist Joaquín Bajadoz. The presentation will be complemented by an illustrated overview of the historical events that inspired the novel.

Talk in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into EnglishOct.11th

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world as a mother tongue only after Chinese; it is also the second language of international communication after English. However, it is necessary to be acquainted with its demographic and socioeconomic projection in order to understand its future development and its global positioning with the other “great languages”. It is also essential to take into account its history in order to understand, foresee and know how to adapt to the future. The Internet and social networks have revolutionized communication during the 21st century, and this is something that goes beyond the borders of the realm of linguistics, it sits comfortably in the economic and the geopolitical spheres, in a framework where language policies have much to say about the future of languages. The Spanish language has to face new challenges in this changing and dynamic context, and it will be essential to adapt to the pace set by the new trends and to develop new positioning models in order to continue to hold the position it enjoys today. Special attention will be given to the Spanish language in the US context.

Instituto Cervantes, the largest worldwide institution concerned with the promotion and the dissemination of the Spanish language and culture, publishes its annual review of the Spanish language, Anuario del Instituto Cervantes. El español una lengua viva (2019), which includes not only the updated demographics of the Spanish language throughout the world in different fields of study and interest, but it does so with a critical insight. The publication also includes sections that showcase the evolution of the Spanish Language from different perspectives, as seen by specialist in the field which take into account not only the linguistic point of view, but also the sociological, political and geolinguistic.

Come and hear all the facts from the renowned poet and current General Director of the Instituto Cervantes Mr. Luis García Montero, along with many other experts in the field.

The Argentine painter Osvaldo Gomariz introduced to both poets, among whom an immediate affinity emerges. tenderness is a romantic comedy full of references to the shakespearean drama: desert islands, monumental shipwrecks, fragile kings and dreamy queens, fearful lumberjacks and tempestuous shepherdesses, magical creatures… and one desire to bind them all: that of finding.

BY JUAN MAYORGA In Reikiavik, the audience is invited to imagine a European city, which happens to be the place where Boris Spasski lost his chess glory to Bobby Fischer. And thus, we’re presented with the first symbolic level of this story – Mayorga’s invitation to think about the history of the Cold War through the metaphor of the game of chess.

Live performance of El pequeño poniSource: Teatro Bellas Artes

BY PACO BEzERRA

Paco Bezzera’s thought-provoking and challenging play raises complex and important questions about personal identity and social norms, and the tragic consequences of hideous bullying. The Little Pony is based on real events that took place in North Carolina, in the United States in 2014.

Film enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see the award winners of the most relevant film festival in Central America. Historically, Central American countries produced fewer films than their Northern and Southern neighbors, a fact that has changed in the last fifteen years thanks to initiatives like Icaro Film Festival. Held annually, this event gives emerging filmmakers the opportunity to tell their own stories.

Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment.

A desperate group of people wait at a rundown Cuban transit station for the next bus to arrive. The problem is, it never shows up. While a number of busses pass by the station, and others that are either full or at the end of the line stop by, it soon becomes obvious that the bus everyone was waiting for has left them high and dry. While one of the would-be passengers, Emilio, uses his downtime to win the affections of the beautiful Jacqueline, most of the rest decide that if they’re stuck without anywhere to go, they might as well make the station a better place to wait, and they begin forming a plan to turn the decrepit bus terminal into a showplace that people would look forward to visiting.

Rafael Azcona by Juan Manuel Prats

T R I B U T E S

Rafael Azcona would have liked to be the invisible man, however, his name is engraved in the history of Spanish cinema. As described by those who knew him, Azcona was a magnificent writer, with a sharp social irony. He began writing stories in the satirical magazine La Codorniz, where he already demonstrated his enormous talent to criticize, always in a humorous way, the current state of values. The documentary Imprescindibles, directed by journalist Fernando Olmeda, pays tribute to this brilliant screenwriter and shows his most human version through testimonies from people who knew and worked with him.

For Moncho, it’s an idyllic year: he starts school, he has a wonderful teacher, he makes a friend in Roque, he begins to figure out some of the mysteries of Eros, and, with his older brother, a budding saxophone player, he makes a trip with the band from their town in Galicia. But it’s also the year that the Spanish Republic comes under fire from Fascist rebels. Moncho’s father is a Republican as is the aging teacher, Don Gregorio. As sides are drawn and power falls clearly to one side, the forces of fear, violence, and betrayal alter profoundly what should be the pleasure of coming of age.

Three decades after its foundation, Cuban cinema from Escuela San Antonio de los Baños has made a name for itself, becoming a reference point for the training of Latin American filmmakers. Throughout its history, diverse styles of cinema inspired by the particularities of the island have been developed. Among the topics examined stand: the union of the body to the earth, Santeria, music or isolation. Easily identifiable, it is a tangible cinema that travels between realism and abstraction.

Pieces of new York is an intimate film, the third piece of a trilogy that aims to study the creative process. It is a love letter to New York, a place where many artists converge with the same purpose, to obtain from their art a personal realization. At the same time, pieces of New York is a reflection on how the city has changed using images filmed in super 8mm in the 70s by the director’s grandfather, who could not dedicate himself to his passion, filmmaking, and where the director compares her own Work with his, reflecting on her concerns and trying to guess her grandfather´s.

wine tasting

Instituto Cervantes and Federación Española del Vino (FEV) collaborate with the aim of spreading wine culture abroad, as part of the Spanish cultural heritage, linked to moderate consumption patterns and integrated into the millenary Mediterranean Diet, while providing information on the quality of the product and its qualities, both from the point of view of health and nutrition and from a sensory, organoleptic and aesthetic perspective. The aim is to link learning and culture in Spanish with the dissemination and knowledge of our country’s wines, and of the various designations of origin produced throughout the Spanish territory, through tastings that allow attendees to obtain more information on the production and production of wine in a given area. With the participation of the wineries: Matarromera and Grandes Pagos.

SEPTEMBER 12TH: THE CREAM OF RIOJARioja is Spain’s most important wine region. Its long history coupled with the revolution of the last three decades, makes it more exciting and diverse than ever. This first tasting of the season will focus on the brilliant wineries and winemakers responsible for some of the most remarkable wines of Rioja in both modern and traditional styles.

SEPTEMBER 19TH: MASTERS OF THE DUEROIn just three decades Ribera del Duero achieved world-class status with its tannic age-worthy Tempranillo-based reds that challenged the best riojas at the top of Spain’s wine hierarchy. Just over twenty years ago, neighboring Toro resurfaced with its powerful and flavorful wines. Along with them, a cohort of smaller areas and quality committed wineries are raising the ante of the whole region. This tasting is devoted to the skillful winemakers responsible for this startling success.

SEPTEMBER 26TH: 2009: TEN YEARS LATERAfter three underperforming vintages, 2009 emerged as an excellent year in Spain’s major wine areas, from Rioja to Ribera del Duero through Priorat and Toro. It was also a great vintage in the major areas of France, Italy and California. After ten years of aging, it’s time to taste the evolution of this heralded vintage.

OCTOBER 10TH: A TALE OF TWO GREAT VINTAGES I: 2014Last season, a Ribera del Duero tasting focusing on 2014 showed that this vintage, along with 2015, is shaping up as one of the top two years of this decade, and one that can be compared to any great vintage of the past. The wines are powerful, tannic, yet balanced and built for aging. In this seminar we will taste twelve wines from this remarkable vintage from all over Spain as well as some great regions from around the world.

OCTOBER 17TH: A TALE OF TWO GREAT VINTAGES II: 2015In Spain, 2015 shined in most wine regions from north to south and its outstanding quality put it in the same league as 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004 and 2001. Moreover, it’s also an excellent vintage is some leading regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy, Northern Rhône, Tuscany and California. In this tasting we will look closely at 2015, a vintage poised for greatness.

OCTOBER 23RD: RIBERA DEL DUERO VS. NAPA VALLEY It’s easy to understand why some American wine writers have sometimes drawn comparisons between Ribera del Duero and Napa Valley. Ribera del Duero wines are made with Tempranillo, while Cabernet is the most important grape used in Napa’s acclaimed reds. But despite using different varieties, both of these new flashing stars of the wine firmament make wines that share some similarities: they are packed with fruit, tannic and concentrated, yet accessible and appealing. In this tasting we will compare these powerful age-worthy wines, adding a couple from Toro and Sonoma.

A T A S T E O F S P A I N

OCTOBER 31ST: 25 YEARS OF MAURO VENDIMIA SELECCIONADA Superstar winemaker Mariano García created Mauro as a side project while still working at Vega Sicilia. Their first wine, called just Mauro, was soon followed by a special selection later known as Vendimia Seleccionada, or VS. 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of this wine whose history we will celebrate in this unique tasting.

NOVEMBER 7TH: AROUND THE WORLD WITH GARNACHAGarnacha is known all over the world by its French name Grenache, but it is native to Aragón in Spain, whence it spread to Rioja, the rest of the country, the south of France, the Mediterranean, Australia and the Americas. Led by the powerful wines of Priorat, the past two decades have seen a strong revival of this grape that has resulted in unexpected and fascinating wines in Montsant, Aragón, Rioja, and now in the areas around Madrid and the south. In this seminar we will compare the styles of the best Garnacha-based wines from all over the world.

NOVEMBER 14TH: NORTH BY NORTHWESTIn the 1980s and 1990s, Albariño led the way in awakening the interest in the white wines of Spain. This century, the rediscovery of the old Mencía vines and the emergence of Godello, have put on the wine map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area and the Galician regions of Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras. Leading star winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios, Mariano García and Raúl Pérez are responsible for this success, producing unique mineral reds and whites that have even elicited comparisons with Guigal’s famous Cote Roties. They have added diversity to Spain’s wine landscape and captivated demanding American critics. This seminar is devoted to the distinctive wines of the northwestern corner of Spain, some of which have achieved cult status in record time and are available only in minuscule quantities.

NOVEMBER 21ST: POWER VS FINESSERobert Parker’s scores have driven the market of high-quality wines for over three decades. Winemakers simplistically perceived that he favored big powerful wines and they obliged. But in the wine world fashions come and go. And now that he’s retired some critics are calling for a gentler, less concentrated and lower alcohol style. Although it’s common knowledge that varieties, soils and climates imprint certain traits in a wine, it’s also hard to deny that human decisions do too. In this fascinating tasting we will discuss the role of variety, soil, climate and the human factor to make wines with specific personalities and styles.

DECEMBER 5TH: 2004: A LANDMARK YEAR AT FIFTEEN Since the moment the bunches were harvested, 2004 was perceived as an excellent vintage in Rioja and a strong candidate for the best ever in the Duero regions, surpassing the likes of 1996 and 1994. Elsewhere in Spain the quality of 2004 was equally superb, from Galicia to Priorat to Jumilla. Now that this vintage has seen fifteen years of aging, it’s a great time to assess its evolution and to enjoy the superb quality of this outstanding vintage.

DECEMBER 12TH: THE SWEET LIFE0Dry white, rosé and red table wines dominate wine lists and shelf space. However, wines ranging from just off-dry to lusciously sweet, come in many more personalities and styles. In this final tasting of the year we will discuss the different ways to make sweet wines, from fortified to late harvest, and taste outstanding examples from Spain, as well as from Port, Madeira and Tokaj.
