Different Ice Melt for Different UsesThere are a number of different types of ice melters. Choosing which will work best for you depends on your needs, the time of year as well as how fast you want to melt snow and ice.

Common Ice Melt StrategiesYou don’t want your ice melting to fall short of your needs. That’s why it’s

good to have an ice melt strategy that includes a more powerful ice melter like Quad Release or Peladow. Many people will use a standard ice melter like SAFE-T-SALT on parking lots, but use a more powerful ice melter for side-walks and entrances to doors.

Melting Temperatures Determining the effectiveness of ice melters at certain temperatures de-pends on the freezing point of the

de-icers’ brine and the amount of ice melter in solution. Some products have definite advantages over others in this area.

Earthguard, the All-Natural Ice Melter

Avoiding Winter concrete damageBelieve it or not, the more ice melt you use, the better you may be

Ice Melt Concrete MythPeople often worry about what ice melters will do to their concrete. The answer is - nothing. It’s a common mis-conception that damage occurs from ice melters chemically attacking the surface of the concrete. That’s not true. Chemically, sodium chloride is no more damaging to concrete than is calcium chloride. In fact, none of the common ice melt materials have any chemical action against concrete.

What Does Damage ConcreteIt’s the freeze/thaw cycle that occurs during winter that can damage concrete during the winter months. All concrete

contains small micropores into which water will penetrate. Any damage that

occurs is a physical interaction between the expanding water as it freezes in the pores of the concrete.

Avoiding Concrete DamageYou can help prevent concrete damage by minimizing the freeze/thaw cycle with low melting temperature deicers. They also reduce the degree of spalling and surface crumbling that takes place with more frequent freeze/thaw cycles. Ice melters that are effective below 0ºF offer the best protection.

Spray the Ice Away with Sprayable De-icer!

Ice Go Sprayable Anti-icer, De-icerIce Go (potassium acetate) is well suited as an anti-icer or as a deicer. The best use of Ice Go is as an anti-icer. Application before precipitation starts will keep snow and ice from bonding to pavement surface, making mechanical removal easier. If anti-icing is not practical, it is also effective as a deicer.

Anti-icing: Apply up to 1 gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. Apply prior to precipitation. Removal of snow is required to prevent diluting Ice Go. Should snow accumulate, reapply Ice Go.

De-icing: Suggested application rate is 1 1/2 to 3 gallons per 1,000 sq. ft. Rate depends on ambient temperature and amount of frozen precipitation. Conditions closer to 0˚ F with over 1/2” precipitation will require a higher rate.

Earthway S25 Spray ProEasy to push sprayer with high-speed gearbox pumps solutions through a TeeJet® nozzle for consistent applications.

Three nozzle tips included for varying rates from 74 oz to 120 oz per 1000 sq. ft. allowing for a broad variety of uses, from anti-icing solutions during winter to pest and herbicide applications in Spring/Summer. Spray width is 3 to 5 feet depending on walking speed. Lever positions from “transport” to “spray”.

While rolling in transport positions, solution bypasses back into the tank, keeping solutions mixed. Includes 6.6 galIon capacity, sturdy, powder coated steel frame. 5/8” stainless steel axle and 13” pneumatic tires.

If you’re considering a fall seeding, the sooner you act, the better!

Fall Seeding to Repair TurfThe drought of 2010 has left turf throughout Ohio in terrible, if not, “per-manently dormant” (dead) condition! So what do you do? Consider Fall seed-ing and take advantage of Green Velvet’s advice based on years of experience growing Ohio’s premier turfgrass sod.

Seed Early in OctoberSeed as early as possible the first few weeks of October. Because of the

extreme heat we had in September, Ohio’s soils are warmer than normal. This is good news for seeding in Oc-tober. With proper watering, expect all varieties to germi-nate in October.

Know the RisksThe big question is, when will the first big hard freeze occur this fall? Turf Type Tall Fescue seedings will become more risky the farther into October you go.

The take home lesson to seeding after the first few weeks of October is - if you are not willing to do it all over again in Spring, you may not want to risk it! Mother Nature will have the final say in your October seedings success.

Consider winter dormant seedingThis year it’s highly recommended to deal with drought damage

Plan to Seed in Mid-DecemberIf you missed out on fall seeding, don’t worry. You can still repair damaged turf with Winter Dormant seeding starting in mid-December. Soils Must Be ColdSoils must be cold enough so as not to

allow the seed to germinate, so wait un-til at least mid-December to begin your Winter dormant seeding. How it WorksThe freezing and thaw-ing action throughout the months of January, February and March will actu-ally plant the grass seed for you. When soils

warm up in spring, your seed will germi-nate giving you a giant head start over spring seeding.

In the Danger Zone for Snow MoldThis year the drought has weakened turf, making it even more susceptible to snow mold. A long winter of snow cover can be devastating to your course and cost a lot in time and money to repair.

Green Velvet’s Power Combo Green Velvet is here to help. This year, we’ve assembled a powerful group of

fungicides to give you a total solution no matter what your budget.

Snow Mold Does Not Need Snow Pink snow mold can affect turf as early as fall. Even though it’s called snow mold, it doesn’t need snow to occur. Snow molds are caused by low tem-perature tolerant fungi able to grow in temperatures at or below 0º C. In cool, damp periods of the year, small water soaked patches of brown or yellow

brown grass appear particularly on Poa annua. After snow melt in the spring, patches may turn pink on exposure to light. Gray snow mold is evident after snow melt and is light brown, gray or straw colored.
