Welcome to the Mandel JCC’s exciting series of Fall programs, all designed to help you engage with the arts, Jewish life and contemporary issues. We hope these offerings will encourage you and connect you to the Jewish community and the Mandel JCC.

In the next few pages you will find a full slate of inspiring classes, lectures, presentations, films, and entertainment. We invite everyone, regardless of background, religion, or spiritual beliefs, to participate.

We are pleased to thank our many partner organizations who have been instrumental in helping to bring these programs to the community: the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland, HaMakom Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Board of Rabbis and the American Jewish Committee.

The 60’s TV Lounge Tuesday, September 23 – October 14 11 am-Noon • 4 sessions

Each week we will explore a different TV genre, viewing clips and discussing social and political issues shown as TV reflected our rapidly changing world. Instructor Bill Brauning, M.Ed., will look at family shows, game shows, variety shows and mystery/drama/sci-fi shows. CODE: 8551$35 Members / $45 Community

Air Dry Clay Monday, October 6 – 27 • Noon-2pm 4 sessions

Take home artwork that you can proudly display in your home while you discover the joy of working with this time honored art form. We will work with air-dry clay (no firing required) to create simple shapes and forms as we create a universe of people, animals, scenes, and more. You will learn how to create fanciful figures, well-dressed dolls, mermaids, and animals. CODE: 8557$25 Members / $35 Community

Visual ArtsMove Over Prada – Monday, Nov 3 – 24 • Noon-2 pm • 4 sessions

Learn how to create a stylish handbag that reflects your personal needs and tastes. Create an artist’s clutch bag in the style of Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollack, or whatever fashion you desire. CODE: 8564$25 Members / $35 Community

Painting with Pastels, Colored Pencils and other Media Friday, Oct 31 – Dec 19 • 1:30-3:30 pm • 7 sessions (no class on November 28)

Learn about light, color and composition while using the medium of your choice: water color, colored pencils, pen and ink, graphite or pastels. Beginners to advanced welcome, everyone works at their own pace. Your instructor, Jennifer Kosarko, will discuss supplies at the first class. No drawing experience necessary. Learn the basic controls and concepts of digital photography and how they allow you to progress from taking photos to making photos. Topics covered include: Shutter Speeds, Lens Apertures, ISO, Depth of Field, Control of Motion, Composition, and Creative Techniques. CODE 8559$20 Members/$30 Community

Night and Low Light Photography Mon, October 20 • 7-9:30 pm

Learn to use your digital camera in nighttime and low light conditions without the use of a flash. Topics include: Night-time city skylines, fireworks, carnivals, neon lights, street scenes, outdoor sports, Indoor sports, stage/theater performances, dark interiors and many other low-light situations and subjects. Fall Art Show: Nancy Schwartz Katz interpretive Narratives: illustrated Art in our CommunitySeptember – October, 2014 • Mandel JCC Lobby

As a student of Parsons School of Design in New York and Paris, France, Nancy Schwartz-Katz earned a Bachelors’ of Fine Arts in 1988, concentrating on drawing, painting, and illustration. In addition, she studied privately under sculptor and artist David Passalacqua. After spending three years with the internationally acclaimed studio “The Pushpin Group” where she represented eleven illustrators negotiating their contracts with advertising agencies, corporate accounts, magazines and publishing companies, Nancy returned to Cleveland to continue developing her own career in art. She is commissioned both locally and nationally to create Judaic art. From 1998-2003 she sold limited edition prints and paper cuts to stores across the country and Canada.Free and Open to the Community

Preparing your heart for the high holidays with rabbi Simcha Zevit Sunday, Sept 14 • 10 am-4 pm Morning Session 10 am -12:30 pm Afternoon Session 1:30-4 pm

This one day community-wide program will explore ways to spiritually prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Participants will explore their relationship to God, to one another, and to the community using text study, personal reflection and meditation. Tishrei Chevruta StudyTuesday, Sept 23 – Oct. 14 • 7- 8:30 pm • 4 sessions

Participants will join local Rabbis from all denominations once a week to study their favorite texts related to the fall holidays. Working in chevruta (partner study) will allow participants to bring their different experiences, sensitivities and insights to a text. The program will culminate with a community text study and celebration in the Mandel JCC sukkah, hol hamoed sukkot. Mussar practice leads us on a path of personal spiritual transformation. We will focus on the middah, (soul trait) of humility. Through text study, conversation with chevruta (study partner), meditation and gerushin (repetition of a phrase) we will explore this middah together.$36 includes dairy lunch

Jewish Life

The Jewish Arts and Culture Lab is accepting applications for its 2014-2015 fellowship program. Artists will explore the theme “Slavery and Freedom” through Torah study, texts, theology and philosophy. The group will study together and will meet for peer review of their work. The fellowship will culminate in an exhibition of the completed work of all fellows at the Mandel JCC.Each artist will receive a stipend for the fellowship, along with educational and artistic support from the group.Applications and materials must be submitted by November 14, 2014. Cleveland Jewish Arts and Culture Lab Community Kick Off Program “Slavery and Freedom”Wed, Nov. 12 • 6:30 pm • Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Jewish Arts and Culture Lab kicks off its 3rd year with a special community program exploring the theme, “Slavery and Freedom” in partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art. Join us as we take a guided tour to examine works of art using to explore the theme using Jewish texts and sources. Space is limited, Reservations are required. Light kosher refreshments will be served.

Jewish Arts and Culture Lab Artists Fellowship Sukkah City

Sukkah City chronicles bestselling author Joshua Foer’s architecture competition that explores the creative potential of the ancient Jewish sukkah and created a temporary exhibition of 12 radically designed sukkahs in the heart of New York City. Add your personal “artistic” touch to the panels for the Mandel JCC sukkah both before and after the film.$6 Members / $8 Community

Meet the Schlicha: Danielle AsifDaniel Asif is serving as a Schlicha (Israel representative) and will be in Cleveland for the coming year. Raised in Jerusalem, Danielle is currently studying for a B.A. in Education and has worked as an educator in different areas throughout her life including with new Olim (immigrants) in a boarding school in Karkur and managing a youth center in Caesarea. During her Army service, Danielle was in the Intelligence unit in the IDF. In her free time, Danielle enjoys art, interior design and photography. She is excited to be spending time in Cleveland engaging with our community and strengthening Cleveland’s connections to Israel and the Israeli people.

Mah Jongg, an ancient Chinese game that dates back as far as 960 A.D., involves skill, strategy, calculation, and a little luck. Learn the rules and necessary strategy to become a skilled player. This is a wonderful way to make new friends and have a lot of fun. Bring $8 to purchase this year’s Mah Jongg card. Attendance at the first session is mandatory.
