DESCRIPTION

Herndon Parks and Recreation Department, in Fairfax County, Virginia, provides parks and recreation programs and special events to meet the diverse interests of our residents and surrounding communities. The department operates the Herndon Community Center, located at 814 Ferndale Avenue, Herndon, VA, 20170. The department oversees the operation of eleven neighborhood parks.

The pool is open only to lap swimmers age 13 and up and

scheduled swim lessons on Saturdayand Sunday mornings until noon.

“Design a Class!”Have you been unable to be placed ina swim class of your choice? Do youand your friends have free time during weekday afternoons from 12-3pm? Then it’s time to “Design aClass”! Three to five swimmers areneeded to schedule a group lesson onthe day that fits your schedule. For

Aquatics ClassesMakeup Policy

Classes cancelled due to inclementweather, pool closures or instructor ill-nesses are made up as the calendar al-lows. Credits for cancelled classes willnot be issued to participants who areunable to attend the makeup class.

Wacky WednesdayCome join us in the pool for great funand games for the younger crowd.

The training pool will be available forkids (must be with an adult in the water)and filled with our wacky water toys.

Programming may occur during this timeusing some areas of the pool. Noon–3pm

Lifeguard Training Class Age 15 & upThis class trains and certifies American Red Cross lifeguards. Working as an instructorat HCC since November 2008, Mary Jo has contributed greatly to the growth of the program.Active on the Zumba Instructor Network and the local Zumba Community Facebook page,Mary Jo is constantly promoting our Community Center classes. Her classes average nearly40 participants per night–all drawn in by her welcoming “southern charm” and captivated byher calorie-torching routines. Beyond her own classes, Mary Jo has recruited several of thecurrent Zumba instructors. She has helped bring in Zumba Education Specialists (ZES) fromZumba Fitness LLC for us to host continuing education classes with and present ZES MasterClasses. And to top it all off, Mary Jo has coordinated, promoted and guaranteed the successof our biannual Zumba Fitness Parties. Tennis lessons are offered at the Bready ParkTennis Complex, adjacent to the HerndonCommunity Center. Classes are organizedunder the National Tennis Rating Program(NTRP). This kids triathlon gives youngsters a great opportunity to compete in one ofthe fastest growing sports in the United States. RUN@WORK Day, presented by the Road Runners Club of America, encourages adults to get30 minutes of exercise each day. To participate, visit the Herndon Community Center at 12pm on

September 20th and run/walk a 1.5-mile or 3-mile course. Alabama Drive ParkLocated on Alabama Drive. This 10-acrepark has two basketball courts (lighted),soccer, one 60’ and one 90’ baseball field(both lighted), playground equipment forages 5-12, and a tot lot.

Bready ParkLocated on Ferndale Avenue, adjacent to theHerndon Community Center. Facilities atthe park include a picnic shelter, softball and60/70’ baseball field (both lighted), outdoorbasketball, six lighted tennis courts, indoortennis courts Oct.-May, soccer field and aplay apparatus. Sports fields are available forscheduled leagues. Shelter is available forreservations.

Bruin ParkLocated on Van Buren Street. An 8-acreneighborhood park includes a large playarea, a picnic shelter and features two tenniscourts, a softball field, a basketball court andan open play area. Available on a first-come,first-served.

Chandon ParkLocated on Palmer Drive off the HerndonParkway. Park includes two tennis courts, atot play area, a baseball field and a fenceddog park.

Cuttermill ParkA 6-acre neighborhood park locatedbetween the Cuttermill and Westfieldsubdivisions. The park includes abaseball/T-ball field, walking areas, and a multipurpose court for volleyball andbasketball. A mini basketball court toaccommodate younger children is available,as well as playground equipment for ages 5-12, and a tot lot.

Haley M. Smith ParkLocated off Van Buren Street at HerndonParkway. The park features two 60’baseball/softball fields, a soccer/multi-usefield, basketball and sand volleyball court,and a play area.

Harding ParkCorner of Jefferson and Van Buren Streets.This neighborhood area features a children’splay area, park benches and an open playspace.

Runnymede ParkHerndon’s 58-acre nature park is located onHerndon Parkway between Elden andQueens Row Streets. Provides passiverecreational opportunities, and features anative plant garden with over 100 differentspecies of plants, flowers and wildlife. Opendawn to dusk for hiking, bird-watching,nature study and picnicking. Park includestwo picnic shelters (can be reserved) and apaved handicapped-accessible trail. Refund Policy for Classes & Programs

Late EnrollmentMissed the first class day? We still want you to getyour workout this session. Aquatics Water Workoutand Fitness Studio Small Group Training classesonly will accept late enrollment when there is spacein the class, and both the Program Supervisor andinstructor approve. Consideration is given to theimpact on, and quality of, the class on a case-by-casebasis, and does not apply to personal absences formissed classes due to vacations, medicalappointments, business travel, and so on. Ifaccepted, fees are applied at 100% until the mid-point of the class, and at 75% of the full class feeafter the halfway point. Participant must register inperson once approval is obtained.

Participation Open to All HCC programs and facilities are open to all citizens,regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age ordisability. The TOH supports the Americans withDisabilities Act by making reasonableaccommodations for persons with disabilities so thatthey may participate in services, programs oractivities offered by the TOH. Please call 703-787-7300 at least two weeks in advance to discuss anyaccommodation that may be necessary to allow forparticipation.

What does TOH and NR mean?The Town of Herndon Parks and RecreationDepartment (TOH) operates the HerndonCommunity Center (HCC). • Town of Herndon (TOH) residents receive adiscount on classes and programs. Proof ofresidency is required. This discount does not applyto classes meeting three times or less, leagues, tripsor special events.

• Town of Herndon (TOH) residents receive adiscount on admission fees to the HCC. The feeschedule is noted on page 2 of this brochure.

• Town of Herndon (TOH) residents will receivepriority in registering for classes if registration iscomplete prior to non-resident registration date.

• non-TOH residents (NR) are people living outsidethe town of Herndon limits.

• Town Residents may not register non-residents atthe discounted TOH rate under their householdaccount.

How do I know if I live in thetown of Herndon?An easy indicator is if your car’s personal propertytax sticker is from the town of Herndon. Not allHerndon addresses are in the TOH proper. We encourage you to register a week ormore before the scheduled start date to help ensurea class is not canceled due to low enrollment.

Registration OptionsOpen registration dates apply to ALL registrationoptions—10am on August 14 for TOH residents,and 10am on August 20 for Non-TOH residents.Registration options are listed in order for the bestadvantage. Proof of residency is required.1. ONLINE registration access requires a customer ID number and password beforebeginning online registration. Allow up to 2business days to complete the application processand receive your ID number and password.Detailed instructions on the online registrationprocess are available at www.herndon-va.gov.Once your account is established, and theregistration period has opened, you may enrollonline any time. Registration for classes with thisicon is not available online. Acceptance ofour liability waiver will be required prior toregistration.
