Text & Translations

Stella CaeliStar of Heaven who nourished the Lord, and uprooted the plague of death which humankind’s first parents planted; May that star now deign to hold in checkthe constellations whose wars devour the people with the ulcers of a terrible death.O glorious star of the sea, save us from the plague;Hear us, O Lady, for Thy Son, denying nothing, honors Thee.Save us, Jesus. For us, the Virgin Mother supplicates Thee.

Angele Dei (Prayer to a Guardian Angel) Angel of God,my guardian dear,To whom divine love commits me here;Ever this night be at my side,To light and guard, to rule and guide.Amen.

Adonai Ro’iA Psalm of DavidThe Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth mein the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.Yay, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;thy rod and thy staff comfort me.Thou preparest a table before mein the presence of mine enemies:thou anointest my head with oil;my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow meall the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Non nobis, DomineNot to us, O Lord, not to usbut to your name be the glory

The University Singers

The University Singers is the University of Virginia’s flagship choral ensemble, heard by thousands each season in performances of a cappella and accompanied choral repertoire, including major works with orchestra. In 2017, the group joined the Charlottesville Symphony on the steps of the Rotunda to perform for UVA’s Bicentennial Launch Celebration, before an estimated crowd of 20,000. In recent years, the Singers have also sung for Les Misérables creators Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil during their UVA residencies, sung for the 2016 UVA Holiday greeting which received more than 400,000 views on social media, and taken a two-week concert tour of England, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria. During the pandemic, they continued to present virtual performances, and hosted online master classes with Eric Whitacre, Alice Parker, and other choral luminaries. Founded in 1957, the group became a primarily student ensemble soon after UVA began admitting women in 1970, and celebrated their 60th anniversary with the 2017-2018 season. Historical highlights have included concerts and workshops with Bobby McFerrin, Meredith Monk, and Otto-Werner Mueller, a performance for Hillary Clinton, a performance for the 2010 VMEA Conference, and frequent collaborations with the Charlottesville Symphony including for the popular Family Holiday Concerts. Recent repertoire has included Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 with the Charlottesville Symphony, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Handel’s Messiah, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Verdi’s Requiem, and Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem, premieres of works by Stephen Paulus, Forrest Pierce, Judith Shatin, and Eric Whitacre, and a program featuring African-American composers such as Nathaniel Dett, Moses Hogan, and H.T Burleigh. Recent North American tours have taken the group to Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Charlotte, Charleston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Montreal, New Orleans, Orlando, New York City, Philadelphia, Providence, Toronto, and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The group has also been heard on previous tours in Italy, Belgium, Germany, Russia, and Switzerland, and recordings include a CD of Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore. The 2018-2019 season began with performances of Bernstein’s Mass at the Paramount Theater as part of the Leonard Bernstein centennial, and 2021-2022 includes collaborations with the Oratorio Society of Virginia, and a program celebrating 50 years of women at UVA.

Students in the University Singers come from UVA’s eight undergraduate schools, including Arts and Sciences, Education, Nursing, and Engineering, as well as several of the graduate and professional schools. While approximately 25% are music majors, the ensemble is open to any student by audition, and is a for-credit curricular class. Together, members enjoy an esprit de corps arising from the pursuit of musical excellence, and the camaraderie the singers develop offstage. Michael SlonActive as a conductor of choral, orchestral, and operatic/musical theatre repertoire, Michael Slon is Director of Choral Music and Professor at the University of Virginia, where he leads the University Singers, UVA Chamber Singers and also guest conducts the Charlottesville Symphony. Having led the University Singers and Charlottesville Symphony in a gala performance for UVA’s 2017 Bicentennial Lanch Celebration (which included Copland’s Appalachian Spring with the Martha Graham Dance

Company), he and the Singers presented theregional premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at UVA in 2018. His UVA ensembles have also performed for composer Philip Glass and the creators of Les Misérables, taken a two-week European concert tour, and received more than half a million views on social media platforms. During the pandemic, he has likewise remained committed both to the fundamental values of the choral art, and to developing new platforms to engage singers and audiences, including the 2020 virtual Family Holiday Concert, and master classes with distinguished artists including Alice Parker, Jake Runestad, and Eric Whitacre. Since 2011, he has also served as Music Director of the Oratorio Society of Virginia. In that time, he has created a series of new artistic partnerships with the chorus, including a 2014 semi-staged production of Bernstein’s Candide with Ash Lawn (now Charlottesville) Opera, performances with

regional orchestras and youth choruses, an Adolphus Hailstork-Rita Dove commission for the group’s 50th anniversary (later featured on regional PBS), and a Community Sing-In to benefit local charities. He has also participated regionally as an artist with the Heritage Theatre Festival, Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival, Staunton Music Festival and Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival, and as a musician committed to the education of young musicians, remains active as a guest conductor for honors choirs and orchestras. Prior to UVA, he served as visiting conducting faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory, and assistant conductor of the Cornell University choruses and Cincinnati’s May Festival Chorus, where he prepared and co-prepared choruses for concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. His ensembles have worked with artists including Moses Hogan, Bobby McFerrin, Meredith Monk, Peter Phillips, and Franz Welser-Most, and commissioned composers including Stephen Paulus, Forrest Pierce, Adolphus Hailstork, Eric Whitacre, and Judith Shatin. Also a pianist, composer, and writer, he holds degrees from the Indiana University School of Music and Cornell University. His first book, Songs from the Hill, has been cited in a variety of other publications, and his work on Leonard Bernstein has recently appeared in the Choral Journal and also won the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Julius Herford Prize. As a composer, he has had work presented by the Vocalis Chamber Choir in concert at NYC’s Merkin Hall, and at the 2018 ACDA Eastern Convention.

History of UVA Co-education

Women’s education at UVA is the culmination of a long journey. The path to full education is marked by the work of many women, as well as their advocates and allies, including: Isabella Gibbons, Caroline Preston Davis, Mary-Cooke Branch Munford, Adelaide Simpson, Roberta Gwathmey, Alice Jackson Stuart, Betty Slaughter, Mavis Claytor, Elizabeth Jones Johnson, John Lowe, Ernest Ern, Virginia Scott – and so many more, many of whose names have not been remembered. A January 1920 resolution of the Board of Visitors paved the way for white women who were “mature and properly qualified” to enroll in degree-granting programs of the graduate and professional schools of the University. In September 1920, 20 women matriculated, and the first degrees earned by women were conferred in 1921. The first Black woman to be granted a degree from UVA, E. Louise Stokes Hunter, earned her Doctorate in Education in 1953. Between 1920 and 1970, more than 15,000 women earned professional, graduate, and undergraduate degrees and an equal or greater number earned diplomas or degrees in nursing. The journey to coeducation culminated in 1970, when the first fully co-educational class was admitted to the College. The 450 women of the Class of 1974 transformed the University of Virginia, and the students who followed them have benefited from their courage, tenacity, and commitment to a UVA open and welcoming to all.

The Maxine Platzer Lynn Women’s Center at the University of Virginia was founded in 1989 in response to student demand for resources to address the needs of women students in an environment that was still adjusting to coeducation. Today, the Women’s Center provides a wide array of leadership opportunities through their academic internship and engaged scholarship program; resources and services, including counseling for trauma recovery; educational trainings for the University community; and celebrations of the accomplishments of the University’s change agents. The Women’s Center is proud to support students in their academic careers, professional development, and personal well-being.
