Mountaineer Folk Festival

5 DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLCToll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Mountaineer Folk Festival The Mountaineer Folk Festival is an authentic annual mountain

festival. It takes place the first weekend in September

each year at the Fall Creek Falls

State Park near Pikeville, TN. This is an amazing folk festival with over

100 handmade arts and craft booths,

including pioneer demonstrations, craft

demonstrations, an assortment of foods, breads and baked goods, and live mountain music in three areas of the park. Music includes country, bluegrass, folk, and some picking and playing under the shade trees by musicians from the region and all over the Southeast. There are plenty of things for the kids to do and see, including wagon rides, mule pulls, marbles, a petting zoo, and crafts. This year we even saw a snake show! Fall Creek Falls State Park is a wonderful, expansive area, with lots of shade trees, which makes this folk festival even more attractive. These are normally still the hot days of summer, but the trees will shade you from the afternoon sun, keeping the visitors and vendors comfortable.

The quality of the crafts/crafters was spectacular, including lots of wood turners, artists, pottery, handmade purses, jewelry, candles, wooden toys, and so much more! It’s the perfect place to stock up on presents or even start your Christmas shopping early. One of my favorite booths was the Dutch Maid Bakery of Tracy City, the oldest bakery in Tennessee, where Cindy Day, the owner was passing out samples of her sourdough bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies and apple butter. The Rock Pile Farm was distributing samples of their hot, tangy sauce that is excellent on fish, in cream cheese as a dip, and I love it on scrambled eggs. I bought one bottle and it was gone in no time! I enjoyed the roasted corn and the homemade fried apple pies that several of the church groups were selling. Then I saw one of my favorite vendors, The Bickfords, who set up their log cabin serving piping hot coffee, sausage and country ham biscuits, sourdough bread, and my favorite molasses cookies. Junior and Janice Ford, owners of Busy Beaver Crafts, set up with their awesome hand turned bowls and other fine woodcrafts. I fell in love with their etched wood carvings that displayed a little boy and girl. I met the West Girls, a close knit family musical group consisting of a mother and three daughters, who make their living in a beautiful valley; a horse and buggy community in the hills of Tennessee.

They were picking and playing under the shade trees in such wonderful harmony. Singing out some of their favorite melodic ballads, old country tunes, and some of their original music, they kept the crowd around them mesmerized, including myself! Their music was beautiful, soothing and so pure and amazing, that I had to purchase one of their CD’s for the ride home to Dale Hollow Lake. You can purchase their CD on http://cdbaby.com/cd/westgirls.

Another great vendor reminded me of my “Opa’s” (grandfather) blacksmith shop in Germany. Dale Davis set up a live blacksmith demonstration, pounding out horse shoes, garden ornaments, hanging plant holders, candle holders, fireplace tools, and much more throughout the weekend. He is a traditional blacksmith from Smithville, TN. He has some truly lovely authentic items. It was an amazing day, and my only regret is that I didn’t make a weekend of it with my family. There was so much to see and do, plus free music and activities for the kids and adults everywhere, not to mention the amazing beauty and scenery all around me. Make sure that you take time to visit either the annual Mountaineer Festival the first weekend of September or the much loved annual Christmas on the Mountain event

the first weekend of December which offers Christmas decorations, singing, arts and crafts, children’s activities, and Santa’s arrival at the park. The park manager, Mr. John Faunville, is proud of the park and credits Stuart Carroll for continuing and organizing these wonderful annual events and so many other activities throughout the year that give families and visitors from all over the world a variety of great events, activities, outdoor challenges like

their triathlon, and so much more. For overnight lodging, please see page 8 and make sure to visit some of the wonderful shops, restaurants and cities around the Fall Creek Falls region. For more information about these Fall Creek Falls State Park events, activities, and more, visit their website at www.tennessee.gov/environment/parks/FallCreekFalls.

Perfect Light Gallery

DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Perfect Light Gallery is a hidden gem in historic downtown Pikeville, Tennessee, heart of the Fall Creek Falls region. The fine art photography that adorns the Fall Creek Falls State Park and Blue Orchid Bistro in Dunlap is the work of John Hargis, resident artist and award winning photographer. John spent many years working in the furniture industry in the Southeast before retiring to the beautiful and majestic Sequatchie Valley near Pikeville; where he married Melba, the love of his life and travelling companion. During these travels, John photographs mostly landscape images of the United States and Puerto Rico. John’s images have been featured not only in the Fall Creek Falls region, but in books, calendars, and other publications; as well as being displayed in homes and businesses across America. The Perfect Light Gallery also houses some additional images by some of America and Fall Creek Falls’ premier landscape and wildlife artists, such as Dan Williams, Tom Wood and Lillian Brooks (a nationally acclaimed water color artist who has won over 200 awards). The Perfect Light

Gallery occupies a two story brick building at 421 Spring Street, part of Pikeville’s historic downtown district which is currently (as we go to print) under a major historical revitalization project that will give downtown Pikeville additional charm. This renovation project will provide downtown Pikeville with old

fashioned lighting, brick sidewalks, landscaping, park benches, and additional retail shopping. The

Perfect Light Gallery building was built in 1918 and once housed for many years

the U.S. Post Office. The Gallery is very inviting with resident artist John there to greet you most days when he is not out photographing.

Perfect Light Gallery also offers custom framing with a large selection of frames

and matting available to choose from. Check out their website for events, gallery receptions and the

gorgeous images from their online photo gallery that can adorn your home, vacation home, cabin or houseboat. Visit them at www.perfectlightgallery.com or phone at 423-447-3029. Perfect Light Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM CST and by appointment.

Fall Creek Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn opened in 1991. It is the pioneer and the first bed & breakfast on the Cumberland Plateau in the Fall Creek Falls State Park area. Owners and innkeepers, Doug & Rita Pruitt, offer a comfortable, hospitable, pleasant stay in their luxurious bed and breakfast country manor home. Operated lovingly and impeccably by Rita and Doug, their eighteen years have seen a lot of satisfied customers. These guests have enjoyed the sprawling acres, amazing views, and delicious breakfasts cooked by Doug.

Talk about having a scrumptious breakfast, come visit with Rita and Doug and let them spoil you with recipes handed down from his 90 year old grandmother! A typical breakfast might be stuffed French toast with homemade apple cider syrup, sausage, and cooked apples, or his newest offering, “Egg in a Snowbank”, with Lemon Poppy Seed scones and homemade cinnamon rolls. Of course, along with breakfast you will be blessed with Doug’s conversations with his guests or anyone that will listen! Doug loves to tell stories and share his viewpoints. Often you will find men in the kitchen talking with Doug about bow hunting or fishing. He is an avid outdoorsman and knows the Fall Creek Falls area better than most folks.

Since opening, Rita and Doug have hosted many country music singers and songwriters, senators, foreign travelers, and a multitude of work-weary guests, newlyweds, and of course thousands of other visitors to the beautiful Fall Creek Falls region, all leaving with fond memories.

Rita, a native of the area, is a tireless cheerleader for the Fall

Creek Falls region. She feels that the Fall Creek Falls State Park is still one of the largely undiscovered, non-commercialized vacation spots left in the South. Her determined efforts have brought positive change to the area with over 64 developers discovering the region. She highlights the region, working closely with both Chambers of Commerce surrounding the park; the Pikeville-Bledsoe County Chamber of Commerce and The Greater Van Buren County-Spencer Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Rita works with Tennessee’s state tourism, both statewide and regionally, to promote the area and to give exposure to this fantastic, unspoiled outdoor recreation paradise.

Fall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast is the only AAA rated lodging facility in the region and surrounds itself with natural beauty, privacy, hardwood trees, horses, and wildlife. Guest accommodations include six air conditioned guestrooms, a two room suite, and the romantic MeadowBrook Cabin nestled behind the manor gives guests their privacy, but still lets them enjoy the amenities of a bed and breakfast. Doug hand delivers breakfast to the cabin, making guests feel extra special. All have private baths, and the sunny, glassed-in Florida room has magnificent views for the guests’ enjoyment, along with TV/VCR’s, movies, and magazines available.

Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of Fall Creek Falls Bed and Breakfast country manor home, conveniently located one mile outside of the north entrance of nationally acclaimed Fall Creek Falls State Resort Park. FALL CREEK FALLS HISTORY

Fall Creek Falls State Park and community sit high atop the Cumberland Plateau. This beautiful area which houses the 30,000 plus acre State Park area came into being because of one man’s vision. James Maurice Taft, known locally as the “Father of Fall Creek Falls”, lived in the FCF community and was much concerned that the beautiful area was going to be auctioned off by the Federal Government for development. Mr. Taft, who did not drive, talked a local resident into taking him to Nashville. There, dressed in a coon skin hat and buckskin clothes of the early frontier days, he met with the then governor, Gordon Browning, and put his own land up as collateral.

Mr. Taft took a personal interest in the state park, and with the help of the Boys Scouts of America, laid out most of the hiking trails. He also ran a steel cable at Fall Creek Falls and Cane Creek Falls so that all who dared could experience the trip from the top of the falls to the bottom of the gorge.

The first national attention came to the FCF State Park in 1939 when the area was featured in National Geographic magazine with pictures of the various waterfalls, as well as pictures of the local residents who lived outside the state park boundaries. The descendents of the First Families of Fall Creek Falls still reside in the area. Many of us who were teenagers in the 1960’s remember when the state park roads were little more than pig trails and the only lodging was primitive camping.

Fall Creek Falls State Park is famous for the Fall Creek Falls, which is 90 feet higher than Niagara Falls and has a hiking trail that allows visitors to go to the base of the majestic falls. The FCF State Park also boasts three other waterfalls, Cane Creek Falls, Cane Creek Cascades, and Piney Creek Falls. There are also four swinging bridges, an outdoor Olympic swimming pool, 18 hole championship golf course, a 250-acre fishing lake, tennis courts, ball fields, horseback riding, paved hiking and biking trails, a large lodge with meeting room facilities and a full service restaurant, and wildlife in abundance. The individual campsites, RV hookups, and cabins are a great added amenity, as well as the group lodges for church groups and Boy Scout camps. Outside the state park boundaries are locally owned and operated B&B’s, as well as cabin rentals.

The FCF State Park is still a free admission park, a fact which never ceases to amaze out of state visitors. Each year a cross-section of people return to the Fall Creek Falls State Park and

community to re-visit a place that holds special memories for them. Some return visitors camped with their parents when they were children. Some were married at Milliken’s Overlook or attended family reunions, church retreats, golf tournaments, the annual Mountaineer Folk Festival, a week of church camp or just a relaxing get-a-way. I think anyone would be hard pressed to find another attraction in Tennessee that means so many different things to so many people. written by Rita Pruett, Co-OwnerFall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast and Cabin

Johnson Nursery & Garden Center

DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

JOHNSON NURSERY & GARDEN CENTER

Johnson Nursery & Garden Center is a family owned

business that is an integral part of the fabric of the gardening industry in the Cookeville and Plateau area. Chuck and Sarah Johnson take great pride in

the continuation of their three generational

family business that started back in 1915 —when

Chuck’s grandfather, W.L. Johnson, started a small nursery called

Baxter Nursery in western Putnam County. Back in those days, tending to the nursery stock took all of their time in the growing months. The summer and winter months were laborious too, when the fruits of their labor were ready to be harvested and sold by traveling by horse and buggy to East Tennessee. Many times Mr. Johnson would barter overnight stays at hotels in exchange for nursery plants and flowers, as he would be gone for days at a time. Chuck Johnson has been in the business his whole life. Gardening is in his blood. Chuck’s gift from God is his passion for gardening and he is one of the best at what he does. It shows in his amazing accomplishments in school, among his gardening peers, and at Johnson Nursery & Garden Center in Cookeville, Tennessee. During his early years, Chuck worked with his father, Willard, and Uncle J.T. in their nursery called Johnson’s Nursery, also located in Baxter, next to his grandfather’s nursery. He trained in the business, getting paid only ten cents per hour, watering flowers and learning as much as he could. College followed with a business degree from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville in 1965. Following graduation, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville majoring in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design. Chuck soon accepted an Associate Professor position at UT with the College of Agriculture in the Horticulture Department. The responsibilities were great working with five Agriculture Experiment Stations across Tennessee. Chuck planned, selected, delivered, and supervised the planting of annuals at all the UT Experiment Stations. This gave him life long lessons in what growers were doing right, and valuable information on what was not working so well. Today, Johnson Nursery & Garden Center has expanded greatly since their move from 10th street in Cookeville to their location at 1717 East Spring St. This location boasts of over 22 acres of gardens, the fantastic garden center, and 50 acres nearby for growing their wide variety of plants and trees. Wife Sarah, Chuck’s college sweetheart, love of his life, and mother to their wonderful children is also his business partner. They enjoy every waking moment taking care of their beautiful nursery. Sarah loves the business. She grew up on a farm, watching her mother lovingly tend to her flowers, which makes her so thankful to be part of this wonderful business. Sarah’s talents are expressed in the large showroom of decorative silk flowers and plants, seasonal home decorations, and Sarah’s signature container and gift gardens.

These are used not only for outside entertainment areas and decks, but clients often phone beforehand to order a beautiful Johnson container garden for a special event, birthday or anniversary. Chuck’s passion for gardening and his know how in the nursery business shows in the selection of plants at the Johnson Nursery & Garden Center. They are known for their excellent and diverse selection of quality trees, plants, shrubs, perennials and annuals, including fruit trees and small fruit plants, which keep people from all over the country coming to Chuck for the best in all their plant needs. They also offer an amazing selection of hearty rose bushes which grow well in Tennessee. Chuck prides himself on being able and willing to offer advice to his customers. He and Sarah are certified nursery professionals. Chuck serves as President of the Garden Centers of America and has served on the board for 7 years. He is well known on the circuit and has been selected in the Top 100 Revolutionary Garden Centers in America and has been selected as Tennessee’s Outstanding Garden Center for three years in a row. This has allowed them to travel the world and represent the USA at different International Gardening Centers. Gardening has been the #1 hobby for the last 5-6 years, and more and more homeowners are interested in gardening as it makes their homes more beautiful, enjoyable and valuable. People are considering the outside as an extension of their living area and are using their deck and garden areas for socializing, entertaining and family time. Johnson Nursery & Garden Center is surely a family affair. Their two sons, Charlie and David, are partners in the business. Charlie and his wife, Rebecca, have two children. David and wife, Susan, have three children. Daughter, Jennifer, lives in Knoxville and is married to Dr. John Little. They have three children.

Chuck and Sarah are a lovely couple with a wonderful business. Their passion and love for the nursery shows in their big smiles and twinkling eyes. When they are not working, they enjoy their 3 gardening in-laws and their 8 grand gardeners (grandchildren), who are growing up to love gardening as much as they do. Johnson’s nursery has over 50,000 square feet under cover, designed for year round shopping with fall, Christmas and seasonal decorations, plants and decorative planters for year round giving. The Johnson’s goal is to continually seek and implement ways to make their customers shopping experience more pleasant and complete. The key to their superior service is upheld by meeting the needs of their customers with superior plant selection and customer service, attending trade shows, learning from others, and maintaining and expert staff. Johnson Nursery is open 6 days a week, June through March. In April and May, you can find the Johnson’s ready to serve you on Sunday afternoons from 1-5 PM. You can reach them at (931) 528-8000 or find them online at www.JohnsonGardenCenter.com.

Grandpa Yoder’s Family Jam

DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Grandpa Yoder’s Family Jams, Jellies and Yum-Yums

Grandpa Yoder lives on Whippoorwill Hill in the Fall

Creek Falls area. His family has been making homemade jams, jellies, apple butter, and some fantastic relishes since moving into the beautiful Fall Creek Falls region in September of 1993. Grandpa

Yoder bought several wooded acres on Whippoorwill Hill

and made a home for his family with his lovely bride, Marla. They

have been married for 35 years and are blessed with 7 daughters, 2 sons, and lots of

grandchildren. One of their favorite things to do, other than make jams and jellies, is to have the family over for a meal and spend time together. Grandpa Yoder came up with the idea of making jams and jellies after seeing a friend do quite well with this in Kentucky and Missouri. He had one of his daughters design and hand draw the label, and the Yoder line of jellies, jams and other “yum-yums” began. Grandpa started with 5 flavors; however, today there are many more, including some favorites like the seedless blackberry and strawberry, and a couple of my

favorites — the strawberry-rhubarb and pear jellies. Their relishes are remarkable and are great on eggs, fish, and chicken or mixed with some cream cheese or sour cream to make a great dip for chips, vegetables or crackers. The ole southern mild pepper relish is a must; lovingly put together by the Yoder’s by chopping up all the fresh vegetables and adding just the right spices to give it that tangy, yummy taste. The Yoder business today keeps Grandpa Yoder, wife Marla, and a few of the children very busy shipping over 100 cases a week. Their Mennonite values, culture, and good work ethic gives them the strength from God to keep up with their very demanding but fulfilling schedule. They have expanded their kitchen out back to encompass a shipping area and a cooking area to keep up with the ever-growing demand. They have several routes that they deliver to every few weeks; delivering to convenience stores, truck stops and some popular retail stores such as Miss Marenda’s Tea Room in Sparta, Dutch Craft Store in Celina, Dutch Bakery in Tracy City and even in the Opryland Mall in Nashville at the Black Lion. They can also be found at the popular Crossville Flea Market on Saturday mornings. Grandpa and Mrs. Yoder display their wares every Saturday morning from early morning until noon; reaching out to loyal clients, who come back for more of Grandpa Yoder’s jellies, jams and relishes. Grandpa Yoder’s treats also make excellent gifts for basket stuffers or housewarming gifts.

You can write to the Grandpa Yoder Family at Whippoorwill Hill, 422 Yoder Lane, Sparta, TN 38583. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” Ps. 33:12

Trails at Fall Creek Falls

19 DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLCToll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Fall Creek Falls Trailscourtesy of Tennessee State Parks

Woodland Trail...the major trail leading from the Nature Center to Fall Creek Falls Overlook. Beginning behind the Nature Center, the trail crosses Cane Creek Cascades by way of a swinging bridge, goes up a set of steps and then on to the Fall Creek Falls Overlook-it does have a few up hills along the way.

Campground Trail...a short connector of the campground to the Woodland Trail. The trail starts in the back of campground “C” near site #177. This important connector makes it possible to originate a hike from your campsite and link it to any of the other trails and their destinations the Gorge Overlook Trail and extension of the Woodland Trail. The trail begins (or ends) .2mi from the Nature Center near the top of the hill on the Woodland Trail. Forking off to the right, it forms a scenic bypass loop to the direct Woodland Trail. The trail passes overlooks of the Cane Creek Falls, two views of Cane Creek Gulf and Fall Creek Falls and then rejoins the Woodland Trail near Fall Creek. Each overlook is worth the extra walk.

Turkey Pen Ridge Trail...a connector of the Village Area to the Woodland Trail. This important trail makes it possible to originate a hike from the Village Area and link it to any of the other trails and their destinations or to go from any trail to the Village Area.. The trail originates off of the Village road (which leads from the camper check-in to the dam) directly across from the entrance to the village. Park in the Village Area, cross the road and enjoy. The hike is a .4mi stroll on an almost level, shaded path. At the Woodland Trail it is a .3mi-right to the Nature Center or .45mi-left to Fall Creek Falls Overlook.

Base of Fall Creek Falls Trail...a steep trail to the bottom of the falls. At the Falls Overlook, the trail to the left continues to the plunge pool of Fall Creek Falls. This trail winds through ancient layers of rock while experiencing the cool temperatures and looming trees of a virgin forest as it descends through the Fall Creek Gorge to the base of the Falls and magnificent view of the tumbling waters. It is only .4mi to the base, but then it is a long .4mi

back to the top. Be sure and rest, hiking is not a contest. Stay on the trail. Do not shortcut the switchbacks.

Piney Falls Trail...a pleasant stroll through the center of the Scenic Loop. It begins near the Fall Creek Falls Parking Lot and is accessible from either the Bike Path or the Falls Road. The trail goes though the Loop, crossing several small creeks and then reaches Piney Falls Road after 1.3mi. After crossing the road, the trail bears right and continues .55mi to the Piney Falls Area. The trail is a part of the Lower Loop Overnight Trail, but is over easy terrain. Note: after arriving at Piney Falls Road (after walking through the loop), it is a short walk (left) along the road to the Bike Path and an easy return to Fall Creek Falls.

Milliken’s Trail...A side trail off the Piney Falls Trail which goes to the overlook. The overlook is a great place to take a break, even though there are no restrooms or water, and the trail is a great way to get there. Follow the Piney Falls Trail for 1mi. Turn right on Millikan’s Trail where it is .4mi to the overlook. From the overlook it is 1.5m back to Fall Creek Falls parking lot using the Scenic Loop Drive. Walking along roads is usualy not as much fun, but this is an exception because of the magnificent overlooks. Walking the Loop gives the hiker the opportunity or the excuse to stop at each overlook.

Piney Falls Side Trails...overlook and bridge trails. In the Piney area there are two very short trails. Beginning at the parking area, the path to the right leads to the Piney Falls overlook and the one to the left goes steeply downhill to the long swinging bridge over Piney Creek. Paw Paw Trail...A loop with great views of Cane Creek Gorge. The trail starts at the Nature Center and heads north to cross Rockhouse Creek, climbs a hill, and continues on to striking views of Cane Creek Falls, the Cane Creek Gulf, and Fall Creek Falls.

Cable Trail...a steep trail to the base of Cane Creek Falls. On the Paw Paw Trail, the trail going uphill to the left immediately after crossing Rockhouse Creek is the Cable Trail. This is a rugged, steep trail, please use the cable. NOTE: See the Cable Trail Information map online or consult with a Ranger or the Nature Center Staff before walking the Cable Trail!

Gilbert Gaul Loop...the newest trail in the Park. Park at the gate of Group Camp #2. The trail begins on the left side of the paved road and follows an old dirt road for a level .8mi (stay right-actually straight-at the beginning of the hike where another old road branches off to the left-this is the return). The dirt road then goes downhill into an open field, close to the site of the Gilvert Gaul homestead, and finally

on to the head of the lake. Here the road ends and the trail really begins leading off to the left. Follow along the lake for 1.1mi to the Frazier Ran Shelter-a great place for a break. It is then 1.35 miles from the shelter around the lake to the cabins. Shortly before reaching the cabins the main trail leaves the lake and goes up a gentle hill for .2mi. This section of the trail was nicknamed the “fern line”. At the top of the hill go right on another old road and it’s .45mi back to the trailhead. Notes:1. The trail is new and might be as obvious as a beaten path. However, it follows a road or a lake so it should not be hard to follow. 2. The trail can also be accessed from the end of the Villas (cabins) but this trailhead should only be used by Inn or Cabin visitors.

Bike Paths...paved paths. These paths are useful when linking other trails or just walking them as a trail. Please yield the right of way to the bikes, it is their path. Go to Mountain Bike trails for more biking and trail information. Inn to the Dam...a paved path which follows the lake for 1.35mi Dam to Fall Creek Falls Overlook...a paved path which winds through a forest to a junction after .45mi. Go left, cross a bridge, and continue .1mi to the top of a hill and another junction. Go right and it is .1mi to the Overlook.

Dam to the Cul-de-Sac and Woodland Trail...a paved path which winds through a forest to a junction after .45mi. Then go straight .2mi (instead of left to the Falls) to reach the Cul-de-sac. The Woodland trail is a short distance down the hill from the paved circle.

Fall Creek Falls Overlook to the Piney Falls Road Intersection...a paved path which parallels the Fall Creek Falls Road for 1.1mi.

Cumberland Plateau Winery & Tours

Chestnut Hill Winery opened in the fall of 2007 and has been offering visitors a fun day outing with tastes of

Tennessee wines and cheeses with great hospitality.

Harold, Nancy, Darrin and Trudi Stryker are the current owners of the winery, conveniently located at the East Bound Entrance, Exit #322, off of I-40. They have had a lot of fun with this new venture, and thank everyone for making their dream

become a reality and an overwhelming success.

The Stryker’s moved to Cumberland County in 1977. Since that time, they have

operated a 525 acre farm, opened the Farm Pantry Restaurant serving beef raised on their farm, and have opened their real estate office United Country Town & Country Realty in Crossville, TN, home of Fairfield Glade. They acquired “Chestnut Hill Winery” in May of 2007. After “combing its hair and brushing its teeth” (as Harold describes it) with extensive

renovations, they have extended the wine selection and added a great gift store. Chestnut Hill Winery is a destination for wine tastings, window tours, and gift shopping with an amazing restaurant next door.

The Chestnut Hill Winery Gift Store is a very unique gift shop where everything is wine related with many items specially produced for the winery under the “Chestnut Hill Winery” label. There is also a great selection of items “Made in Tennessee” such as their signature cheeses, hand crafted items, and works by Tennessee authors. Their Tennessee cheeses are produced at Tennessee dairy farms and are proudly served at their wine tastings. There is a special coffee roasted in Maryville, Tennessee, Grandpa Yoder’s Amish-made jams and jellies, Tennessee River BBQ Sauce, and locally produced honey. Chestnut Hill Winery’s wine is produced on site and their “WINE MAKER” Marty Hoover brought his expertise of 12 years to Chestnut Hill Winery. Marty is confident to expand the wine selection over the next few years to come, and loves to talk to anyone about wine. Visit Chestnut Hill Winery and meet their friendly staff and enjoy a taste of the Cumberland Plateau! Wine tasting is free and window tours are available at any time. Bus and RV Parking is also available! www.ChestnutHillWinery.com

The Brass Lantern is one of the newest fine dining experiences in the Fall Creek region. They are conveniently located off of I-40 and Peavine Road in Crossville, next door to the popular Chestnut Hill Winery and less than an hour via picturesque Hwy. 127 north from the Fall Creek Falls area. The Brass Lantern is a perfect place for a romantic dining experience with your loved one, special occasion with the family, girl’s night out, or a business meeting. Manager Dennis Wilson, house manager Nettie, and their team create an unbelievable experience through their professionalism, gourmet food, exquisite setting, and delightful ambience. Tablecloths and soft candlelight create an intimate and cozy setting. The wait staff adorned in white starched shirts and black ties wait on you discreetly with the utmost professionalism and courteous hospitality. The combined talents of Dennis and his fine staff offer an extensive menu of veal, fresh seafood (flown in regularly), beef, and succulent lamb.

Now, I love fine dining and creative dishes. Recently, I had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful date night with my husband, Terry. We started out with two awesome appetizers. The first was a bruschetta bursting with the flavors of garlic, fresh basil, and an unbelievably aromatic Italian virgin olive oil complimented by a nice Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon. Terry enjoyed every morsel of the second appetizer - huge stuffed mushrooms. They were filled with crab meat bathed in a creamy, delicious hollandaise sauce that had him craving more. The Brass Lantern’s veal dishes are superb and the recommendation from Dennis and Nettie to order the Veal Milanese was excellent. The dish consisted of finely sliced veal covered with a Mediterranean sauce exploding with the flavors of tomatoes, garlic, black olives and other ingredients, served with garlic mashed potatoes and a side of white asparagus. It was wonderful. Oh my, for me to have fresh white asparagus in the Fall Creek Falls region (special ordered from Peru each week) was unreal. The special

hollandaise sauce covered the white asparagus and gave it a sweet, tender taste that I haven’t experienced since my days in Belgium and The Netherlands during “witte spargel” week. Terry wanted more of the hollandaise sauce. He chose to order a seafood dish. He ordered the stuffed shrimp with crab meat lightly battered in a tempura sauce. It too was delicious. The shrimp were huge and the flavors were excellent. He enjoyed every morsel. Unfortunately, there was no room for dessert; but we took a few slices home to enjoy with our afternoon tea the next day. How can you pass up homemade caramel cheesecake and carrot cake? Nettie is famous for her excellent pastry and desserts, baking several varieties daily.

The Brass Lantern is open for dinner only, and reservations are recommended. They have daily specials dependent upon the fresh fish of the day or seasonal produce. They can be reached by phone at 931-484-7657 or visit online atwww.thebrasslanterntn.com.

Golfing in the Fall Creek Falls Region

DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Golfing in the Fall Creek Falls region is spectacular and very affordable at the 18-hole premier championship course at Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy in Dunlap, Tennessee. This course features 6,850 yards of golf from the foot of the mountain to the edge of Hwy. 127 in Dunlap — the heart of the Sequatchie Valley. The course was designed by Dennis Mills and has recently been purchased by Richard Smith — a budding entrepreneur and real estate broker from Dunlap. This is a public course that has recently reopened under

Richard’s leadership and investment. It is one of the best scenic courses in the Fall Creek Falls region. On hole 15, you will discover a 12-13’ waterfall that disappears into a cave at Walden’s Ridge. This is an amazing asset and many play the course just to see the beauty of the waterfall. The splendor of the many waterfalls is one of the things which the Fall Creek Falls region is known for. The area is rich in incredible scenery. Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy offers special weekday winter rates of $20.00 with cart to normal season rates of $35.00 with cart — a real bargain for a day of golfing. The panoramic views of the mountain range, coupled with the rolling hills, and championship course will have you coming back again and again! Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy offers many amenities including a club house, snack shop, athletic center with an indoor and outdoor pool, tennis courts, fitness center and common lounging areas that are pleasant after a day of golf or for the family while

you are out golfing! Become a member of Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy and play unlimited golf. Take a scenic drive from Chattanooga, Crossville, or the Fall Creek Falls region and in less than an hour you can play some awesome golf and enjoy the stunning views. After you work up an appetite, go over to the Blue Orchid Bistro in downtown Dunlap and ask for the golfer’s special. The Blue Orchid Bistro is a charming and excellent restaurant offering lunch and dinner prepared by acclaimed chef Christie Anderson. Playing golf at Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy and discovering the Dunlap/Fall Creek Falls region will captivate you to learn more about the area. If you are interested in purchasing a lot next to the Hidden Falls at Mt. Airy golf course, let Richard of Richard W. Smith & Associates Real Estate & Auction, LLC show you some of his spectacular golf lots. These lots have stunning views with some restrictions and range in size from 1/2 acre to 1 acre — some with fairway views, others with interior views. This golf community currently has around 40 luxury homes with room for an additional 200. Richard and his team would love to show you around. They also offer residential homes, land, and commercial properties in the Dunlap and Sequatchie Valley area. The Sequatchie Valley communities are depicted by natural beauty, four seasons, and convenience to metropolitan areas, with Chattanooga to the south approximately 40 miles, and within a few hours of Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee and three hours from Atlanta, Georgia. Retiring to the Fall Creek Falls area is a fantastic opportunity to live among thousands of acres of plush, green forest, hiking and biking trails, fishing, hunting, tennis, signature golf, and other amazing scenery. The Fall Creek Falls region offers a little bit of everything for those looking for that perfect retirement destination, second home or investment opportunity. One of the last virgin, unspoiled areas in the southeast and in the great Volunteer State of Tennessee, this region is affordable with an extremely low cost of living compared to most of the nation; no income tax, low property taxes, and it is generally considered to be a peaceful and safe environment. In close proximity of four major international airports including Chattanooga (about 1 hour away), Nashville and Knoxville (about 2 hours), and Atlanta (about 3 hours away), this is a perfect place to enjoy your golden retirement years, as well as to enjoy nature and the great outdoors without the hustle, bustle, and smog of some of the other popular destinations in the southeast. There are over 64 developers, builders, and professional real estate brokers/agents ready to serve you and show you that perfect place! With gas back down to less than $1.50 per gallon in these parts (at the time of writing this), there is no excuse not to pack up the car and/or your RV. Take a long weekend or come for an extended period to learn more about our region, and stay at one of the lovely cabins dotting the region (see the list of area accommodations on page 8). Rita and Doug Pruitt’s Fall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast is open year round and ready to serve you, as well as most of the others to be found in the listing. The expansive campground at the Fall Creek Falls State Park would also be a great location to bring your camper or RV. Come experience this region and take a look around. The scenery is fantastic, the people are friendly, and the value is right-especially for today’s economic times.

Christmas on the Mountain

DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

CHRISTMAS FESTIVALChristmas on the Mountain at the

Fall Creek Falls State Park is a perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit and get away from the hustle and

bustle of the city. This is a wonderful annual Christmas

celebration at the Fall Creek Falls Lodge with gathering rooms offering lots of Christmas craft, food vendors, Christmas and gospel music, and even a sighting of Santa Claus. We enjoyed the wide variety of vendors, including the Bickfords who I have written about in Annie’s Favorites in this guide. They offer great stocking stuffers like old fashioned lye soap, Christmas ornaments, gingerbread cookies, and of course, don’t forget to take home a few loaves of sourdough bread to compliment the soups that keep us warm during the chilly winter months.

There were tables of Christmas craft activities for the kids; encouraging children to express their creativity and make some cool ornaments and Christmas crafts. I bought my first Christmas present there for Grandma Burckhard in North Dakota at Christine Barrett’s booth. She is a gifted artist who makes one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces with precious stones and beads. Grant and Blake loved Randall Mealer’s booth with knives and old Indian artifacts, as well as Chris Johnson’s booth with drums, aprons, and lots of leather goods.

This is an excellent display of some of the talent in the Fall Creek Falls area atop of the Cumberland Plateau complete with yuletide spirit and joy being shared. Hot chocolate and cider were served in the lobby by the Friends of Fall Creek Falls group. To add to the ambience, sounds of the season filled the room. We were all singing Christmas music on the way home.

There are many cabins to choose from around the area (see page 8) with off-season rates and of course lodging at the Fall Creek Falls Lodge. What a great way to have a weekend getaway in Tennessee and enjoy the magic of Christmas, sharing the

celebration of the real reason behind the Christmas season - celebrating the birth of baby Jesus and spending time together with family and friends. There were plenty of hikers enjoying the brisk air and beauty of the ridges and trails, too. There is nothing better than coming back from a cold, brisk hike and sitting in front of the toasty fire with a cup of hot chocolate or a hot toddy. Come on top of the Cumberland Plateau and experience Christmas the old fashioned way.

Nationally Acclaimed Theater

CUMBERLAND COUNTY PLAYHOUSE

Cumberland County Playhouse is a professional theater serving one of the state’s largest nonprofit entertainment audiences. Established in 1965 by Broadway and Hollywood actor, writer, and producer Paul Crabtree, his wife, Mary and the people of Cumberland County and Crossville, TN, the Playhouse offers popular musicals, plays and works rooted in Appalachian heritage.

Three to five different shows play in a “repertory” schedule most weeks of the year. Centrally located between Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga, the Playhouse is a short drive from Dale Hollow Lake, Historic Rugby, Cordell Hull Birthplace, Big South Fork, Pickett State Park, the famous Jack Daniels Distillery, and Fall Creek Falls State Park.

Over the years, people from all over America have discovered the Playhouse’s big city excellence at small town prices. In recent years, the company has been among the first independent theaters authorized to produce Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS, and Irving Berlin’s

WHITE CHRISTMAS.

In 2009, the Playhouse presents the Broadway & Hollywood Smash Hit HAIRSPRAY, the holiday favorite IT’S

A WONDERFUL LIFE, plus the modern classic ON GOLDEN POND. A wild and

hysterical comedy, THE FOREIGNER, returns as the Playhouse’s most requested revival, and the Civil War comes to life in SHENANDOAH, the warm, funny and dramatic musical

based on the James Stewart film. And for the 16th year, SMOKE ON THE

MOUNTAIN combines the great characters of the Sanders Family with traditional Appalachian

music, heritage and joyful humor.

Kay Tuttle and David Dean...not only is the Fall Creek Falls State Park region blessed with abundant beauty, but it is also enriched by wonderful people like Kay Tuttle and David Dean. These entrepreneurs had a vision for the Fall Creek Falls region and invested in the area many years ago after spending many enjoyable and memorable camping trips in the Fall Creek Falls State Park. They would come up from Florida to get away from the heat, hustle, and bustle.

These wonderful camping trips led to Kay and David buying 182 acres in 1997. They felt that they could develop it into a gated rustic mountain village to be located on the north side of the park. Today, Grandview Village and Golf Resort is one of the jewels of the Fall Creek Falls region with a mature gated community, lovely Barna log homes, a scenic 18 hole golf course with practice tees and a Golf Academy. Grandview Village also includes many amenities including the charming Opry Barn which is adorned with country and bluegrass memorabilia. It offers bluegrass and country music on the weekends with seating, a gazebo, fire pit, and other spaces for socializing with neighbors and visitors. Grandview Village also offers a clubhouse with a swimming pool, exercise room, and a lodge for gatherings. The vision and wonderful development that Kay and David had over 12 years ago is now proudly owned by the Grandview Village Homeowner’s Association. Kay and David still live there, but are now working on a brand new project, Spencer Mountain Village in Spencer, TN. Spencer Mountain Village will offer luxury rustic village condominiums with amazing bluff views and amenities. Spencer Mountain Village has been approved to include not only the beautiful condominiums, but will also offer a hotel and restaurant. All of the plans and renderings have been completed. Kay and David have three other investors in this project which will be rolled out in six phases over a five year period. They would like to welcome any additional investors that would like to complete this project with a nice return on their investment in a region that is blossoming. Renderings, blueprints, and a video about Spencer Mountain Village can be seen at the north entrance of the Fall Creek Falls State Park at their Barna Log Home office, which includes a Barna Log Home model, and houses their Fall Creek Falls Real Estate Development offices. Kay and David are truly remarkable people, full of life and a passion for the Fall Creek Falls region that they call home. They would love to share with you the amazing qualities of life and their zest for living here. Contact Kay and David by calling Toll-free, 1-866-344-0237 or visit their website, www.grandviewvillage.com.

Blue Orchid Bistro is a beautiful, European/French contemporary styled bistro that opened in the fall of 2008 in Dunlap, Tennessee just minutes from the Fall Creek Falls State Park and Chattanooga. Linda and Randy Slomian and their daughter and chef extraordinaire, Christie Anderson, landed in the Sequatchie Valley from Miami four years ago. Like many Floridians, they loved Maggie Valley in North Carolina. They spent many family vacations there to escape the heat of Miami, enjoy the peace of the mountains and the serenity of the simple life. With Christie finishing culinary school and proving to be quite successful at her culinary skills; she interned at many well known restaurants including the Ritz Carlton in South Beach. At that point, they thought it might be time to find another home. They stumbled upon Dunlap in the beautiful Sequatchie Valley and bought the old pharmacy building in town and a home with lots of farmland and amazing views. Since opening the Blue Orchid Bistro, they have received exceptional reviews! My family and I love a good meal, especially with gourmet flair, made from scratch, and affordable. We loved the Blue Orchid Bistro’s ambience and atmosphere. The food was delectable! They have an incredibly creative menu. The lunch special includes soup of the day or a fantastic French onion soup with a choice of a half sandwich, Caesar Salad or mixed greens salad. The portions are abundant and the

flavors burst with every bite. Chef Christie recommended the house pecan vinaigrette, which was quite flavorful. The toasted pecans really enhanced the beautifully plated mixed green salad. The Blue Orchid Bistro is a perfect place for a small wedding party, class reunion, business meeting, or private event. They offer some fantastic dinner entrees including a peppercorn encrusted steak, apricot bourbon chicken, some amazing pasta with homemade sauces, fresh seafood, and amazing sides. A couple of my favorites are the citrus coleslaw and zucchini fries, which are julienne sliced zucchini that has been lightly breaded and fried, accompanied by a tangy dipping sauce. It is a perfect place to go for lunch before or after enjoying the scenic Sequatchie Valley or a day hike in the Fall Creek Falls State Park. Visit the gallery and shops in Sparta and Pikeville and then head over to Dunlap for a memorable lunch or dinner at the Blue Orchid Bistro. They are located about 4 miles down the road from the Tennessee Tree Toppers, USA’s #1 hang gliding non-profit organization, who have several launch areas including the world-famous wooden radial ramps at Henson’s Gap and Whitwell. The Blue Orchid Bistro is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM CST and dinner is served on Thursday through Saturday from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM CST. Reservations are recommended at 423-949-9567 and you can visit their website at www.theblueorchidbistro.com - Bon Appetit!

The Bickford Country Kitchen is truly a unique business. Several years ago, Randall & Carolyn

Bickford built a log cabin kitchen on a flatbed farm trailer that they can easily hook up to their vehicle and drive

to the various folk festivals and other events around the area. I met them several years ago at the Cordell Hull Folk Festival in Byrdstown, TN. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting them at many events through the years. They are quite an inspiration and I enjoy the opportunity to once again experience the pleasure of their piping hot coffee, wonderful homemade sausage biscuits, and their sourdough bread. Making biscuits and serving coffee doesn’t seem

hard; however, if you take a peek inside their little cabin, you will notice both Mr. and Mrs. Bickford

working in a small space — less than 5 feet wide, where they hand cut each biscuit and bake them in the

wood burning cook stove that had been used by Carolyn’s two great aunts. The other challenge is that Mr. Bickford has

had some health problems over the years that have forced him to use a wheelchair; but regardless of these setbacks, he keeps a smile on his face. His wife, Carolyn, stays strong for the family and makes sure that he has an active part in the family business — despite his different abilities. The early morning smell of the biscuits baking, the sausage frying, and the smokehouse style country ham is enough to send you running to their log cabin, nicknamed “Bear” in 1991. Randall and Carolyn love working folk festivals and set up weekly at the McMinnville Farmer’s Market, where Carolyn has been part of the Farmer’s Market Association since 2003. They are located in space #24 and have a great following. In March of 2007, The Bickfords had their extra kitchen certified by the USDA — which guarantees to the public the highest standards and quality food. In addition to their wonderful breakfast items, they also offer delicious homemade sourdough bread, cookies, jams, jellies, apple butter, handmade crafts, lye soap, painted gourds and magnolia leaves, painted peacock feathers from their own peacocks, and so much more. For years, their biscuits, sourdough bread, and cookies have won many blue ribbons at the county fair. The Bickfords will typically cook 250 loaves of sourdough bread and over 100 dozen old fashioned molasses cookies for each festival, and love sharing their love of homemade items with their loyal customers. They are regulars at the Fall Creek Falls events, including the Mountaineer Festival, Christmas on the Mountain at Fall Creek Falls State Park, and the McMinnville Farmer’s Market every Saturday. The Bickfords can be reached at 931-668-9822. Go by and say hello to the Bickfords. They will feed you well, put a smile on your face, and show you the love and faith in God that enriches their lives.

Annie’s Shopping Favorites

The Fall Creek Falls region has many treasures to find! Unique little shops, artisans tucked away in their studios producing one-of-a-kind items, fashion, home furnishings, and accessories to compliment every cabin, home, RV or houseboat are to be found. I have had so much fun learning more about the towns of Pikeville, Spencer, Dunlap, Sparta, and of course, all the little places along the way. Visit some of these destinations that I have discovered and make sure that you tell them that “Annie” sent you. Jongee’s Gifts & Fine Furnishings was something that evolved while Ms. Jongee, in her 20’s, was an assistant manager at a local Wal-Mart. She would take her paychecks to auction and buy antique pieces to prepare for her dream. A building

became for sale in 1986 and she bought it to store her items. When the building was full, she quit her job. She has been in downtown Sparta for ten years now. Ms. Jongee has a flair for design and fashion, along with a knack for having the perfect trendy items and timeless classics in her showroom for her discerning clients from all over the country. She has incorporated home furnishings, furniture, antiques, artwork, oil paintings, and a ladies boutique upstairs with chic fashion items such as shoes, purses, and a fantastic line of jewelry and accessories. Ms. Jongee takes pride in being able to furnish your new home or cabin, make recommendations of fabrics, styles, etc., or assist you with that perfect outfit for your special event, or a new outfit for a weekend trip. Jongee’s has become the “one-stop-shop” in the Fall Creek Falls region with big city items, as well as small town service and prices. Ms. Jongee travels to the main fashion markets in Atlanta and New York City several times a year and loves bringing the big city style to the Fall Creek Falls region. Jongee’s is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM and on Saturday from 10:00 – 4:00 PM and can be found on 18 East Bockman Way. (Tel: 931-836-2822)

After all that shopping, you will be hungry and I have just the place to send you. When is the last time that you had an all beef hot dog loaded

with all fresh ingredients? Pluto’s Hotdogs on Bockman Way in Sparta is an awesome 1960’s feel hotdog restaurant where you can dine in and listen to 60’s music while you enjoy a hotdog served up any of a dozen different ways. They also serve taco salads, Frito pies, loaded baked potatoes, nachos, and milkshakes. Jeannie and Ray moved here from

California fourteen years ago, after falling in love with Tennessee while visiting family. Their son Aaron decided to join them, opening popular Pluto’s Hotdogs when he moved to Tennessee five years ago. Aaron had visited with the owner of a Pluto’s Hotdogs while in California and knew that was the kind of business he wanted to start. After determining that they wanted to open a good hotdog restaurant they went on a quest to find the perfect hotdog, bun, and ingredients. Today, Pluto’s is open from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday and you can call ahead for dine in or to take your order with you to the office, cabin, or where ever. Enjoy the perfect Pluto hotdog! (Tel: 931-837-5886)

Pottery is one of my favorite crafts. Any time I see a bowl, vase, or special plate, the first thing I do is turn it over to make sure it isn’t mass

produced and that it truly is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece made by an individual.

Well, I found the Fragrant Mushroom in Sparta and fell in love with their creations. Thor and Cherri McNeil started their workshop in Knoxville in the mid

90’s and moved to Sparta in 1999. Thor graduated from Valdosta State

Page 39: Fall Creek Falls Visitor Guide 2009

University with a degree in fine arts. Cherri grew up in Sparta and went to college at the University of Tennessee majoring in retail and consumer sciences. This dynamic duo started their gallery in Knoxville in 1995, but when they saw a building in Sparta for sale on the internet, they purchased it and moved back to Cherri’s hometown. This was to be Thor’s gallery. After Cherri couldn’t find a job, they decided to have a retail front. Nine years later they are thriving. Thor’s pottery is wheel thrown and beautiful. Each one has its own design, colors, and high quality craftsmanship. Some of my favorites are the tableware, coffee cups, bowls, and vases. He has participated in art festivals all over the southeastern United States and has been a potter for over 20 years. Cherri makes hand poured candles, soap, gift baskets, and made to order pieces. She loves to show off their work at the Fragrant Mushroom Gallery located in downtown historic Sparta. All Fragrant Mushroom pieces are “Made in Tennessee” and are excellent birthday, wedding, or just because gifts. Their address is 308 Gaines Street, behind the post office and is open Tuesday-Saturday, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM CST. You can reach them at 931-836-8190 or visit their website at www.frangrantmushroom.com.

The Dutch Maid Bakery of Tracy City, TN was established in 1902. They were a big hit at the Fall Creek Falls Mountaineer Folk Festival last fall - serving up lots of yummy samples. I tasted several of

their delicious artisan breads, (my favorite) sourdough bread, sweet rolls, cookies and their delicious fruitcake. I decided to learn more about them and who was behind this awesome business. What a treat speaking to the vibrant and hospitable Cindy Day, owner/entrepreneur of the Dutch Maid Bakery. Cindy invited

me to visit and take a tour to learn more about this historic landmark. So, I took a drive to Tracy City - easy to get to from the Fall Creek Falls region. It was such a pleasure to discover the oldest bakery in Tennessee founded by John Baggenstoss and family, immigrants from Switzerland. The Baggenstoss family brought their recipes from the old country, ground grain, and baked breads in the wood ovens for many years, supplying much of the county and surrounding area with their bread and baked goods. During the Great Depression, the Baggenstoss family supplied many loaves of bread to those in need by tossing loaves out of their milk and bread truck, and taking many on and giving them jobs in exchange for room and board. The Dutch Maid Bakery has been baking bread for over 105 years, carrying on a century old tradition. The bakery nearly closed when it went up for sale in 2004. Cindy Day, living in Florida at the time, heard about the opportunity. She knew of the region, its tradition and the important landmark. She had worked in the food service industry for a major grocery chain’s bakery department with all the high end equipment - computerized ovens and mixers; but was up for the challenge of moving to Tracy City and making a go of it with her husband and four children.

Today, Dutch Maid Bakery is much more than a bakery. It is a destination in its own right. It is a perfect day trip to enjoy a drive down winding scenic highways to taste their delicious bread, take a tour to see how bread is made, or schedule a class to learn how to make your own. This nostalgic old world bakery has the original old time Hobart mixers from the 20’s and bread slicing machines. There is always a flurry of activity in the kitchen. Dutch Maid Bakery has a fantastic team trained and ready to make each customer’s experience enjoyable. Dutch Maid Bakery also has a charming café that serves a soup of the day, sandwiches, and plate lunches. On Sundays, they offer a delicious brunch with lots of homemade breakfast foods, country favorites, and of course, Dutch Maid breads and baked goods. Visit Cindy and tell her Annie sent you and have a wonderful time. Dutch Maid Bakery is open seven days a week. Visit them on the web at www.thedutchmaid.com or by phoning, 931-592-3171.

The Loom is owned by expert seamstress Judy Yates. It is a great store to visit while in the Fall Creek Falls region. Judy has been operating The Loom for several years, offering outline quilting, custom made pillows, shams, draperies, a wide assortment of fabric, trims,

alterations, and lessons for those wishing to learn more. Her store is bursting with everything imaginable including patterns, embroidery floss, threads, notions, cross stitch patterns and kits, and beautiful arrangements of flowers for funerals, churches, and gravesite memorials. She is a wonderful lady and keeps very busy with her custom quilts and alterations that serve the local community, as well as, the visitors to the Fall Creek Falls region. Many folks have found her by word of mouth. Judy has a knack for multitasking and keeps her shop humming with activity, either by her sewing machine repairing a treasured outfit or sewing that special quilt for a loved one. She is active

in the community with the Fall Heritage Festival and loves to spend time with her grandchildren. The Loom is conveniently located in downtown Pikeville, just off Main Street at 406 Cumberland Avenue and can be contacted at 423-447-2610. While you are in town, stop in and see John Hargis at the Perfect Light Gallery. He specializes in fine art photography and has some amazing images of the Fall Creek Falls region. If you want to spend a little more time in the area (vacation or relocation) or invest in local property, see Ronnie Swafford at Swafford Realty and take a look at their listings, developments and investments in the beautiful Fall Creek Falls region.
