Welcome to the

FALL FESTIVAL

Dear Educators, Happy 2013-2014 school year! I know this is a busy and exciting time as you welcome your students and faculty back to school. To help, I am sending some tools and resources to help you promote reading from the very start of the new school year. myON wants to help promote reading by providing resources that may be used by your team to motivate students to read more, support teachers in the classroom, and encourage family literacy and involvement. Enclosed are materials to promote a celebration of fall reading with the myON Fall Festival. The myON Fall Festival resources will build student excitement about reading and motivate them to read more. To ensure everyone is involved, the toolkit is segemented into three parts: 1. District/School/Classroom Promotional Activities 2. Student Engagement 3. Family Involvement

In the following pages, you will find templates, sample scripts, goal sheets and other resources to help promote reading throughout your school/district. All of the materials are designed to serve as templates, so please feel free to edit them to fit your needs. I hope you find these materials helpful, and I look forward to supporting you goals for literacy this year. Thank you for our partnership and here’s to a productive and rewarding year! If you have any questions, please contact me. Sincerely, INSERT NAME

Parents: Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! Did you know? A child that reads for 1 minute a day outside of school will score in the 10th percentile. A child

that reads 33 minutes a day will score in the 90th percentile (Anderson et al., 1988). A 500-book library in the home will propel a child 3.2 years further in education. However, the

majority of our urban youth do not have the benefit of a home library (Evans et al., 2010). Two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail

or on welfare. Over 70 percent of America’s inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level (Williams, 2013).

As you can see from the facts above, reading truly is a key component to academic success! To provide support for your child’s reading journey, we now have access to over 4,000 enhanced digital books through myON reader. myON reader is an award-winning, personalized literacy product for preK-12 that matches student's interests and reading level to a recommended list of books. Students can access myON reader 24/7, anywhere there is Internet access! We encourage you to share in your student’s reading goals and read with them throughout the school year on myON reader. If you have any questions, please contact me directly. Sincerely, INSERT NAME

10 Ideas for Family Reading Below are 10 ideas on how make reading fun and encourage reading at home:

1. Follow the Leader! If you want your children to be good readers, let them see you read.

2. Oscar Night: Reading to an audience is fun! Have young children read aloud to their stuffed animals and toys.

3. Book Themes: Choose a theme your child is interested in (seasons, cars, animals, etc.) Find books related to that theme. Discuss which books were best and why.

4. Weekly Topic and Research: Build a weekly calendar of books to read. Using myON with technology is a good way to extend the learning. Find the book topic online and discuss differences and similarities between the book and online research.

5. Alternative Ending: Create an alternative ending to a book on myON with your child(ren). Write the story or plan a skit. Great for a rainy day!

6. Bait and Switch: Fit reading into the day! Have the child(ren) do the dishes one night while you read. The next night you do the dishes while they read!

7. Game Night: Create a myON scavenger hunt and share with your teacher/class

8. Money Talks! Set a goal for your child and offer a monetary reward—maybe a quarter per book read

9. myON will Travel: Pitch a tent (or sheet over the clothes line) and have a reading picnic with your mobile device

10. Last but not Least…cuddle up and read to kids every night before going to bed!
