THE BOSTON CELLO QUARTETClassical to contemporary selections
VILLA-LOBOSBachianas Brasileiras, no. 5 Barbara Quinitiliani, Soprano
On October 21, we open our season with a Gala concert – a cello extravaganza featuring the award-winning Boston Cello Quartet. Founded in 2010 by four cellists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the BCQ has quickly won the hearts of music lovers through their own arrangements of classical music, jazz, contemporary works, and even comic medleys - all showcasing the limitless possibilities of the instrument they love. The BCQ will then join Pro Arte cellists and friends and the stunning soprano Barbara Quintiliani in Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. This rarely performed work for eight cellos with soprano is not to be missed! A Gala reception follows - with gourmet goodies, a raffle, and a chance to meet the artists!

For our final concert of the season we welcome back acclaimed conductor and Boston Lyric Opera music director David Angus. The program features Cambridge-based composer Howard Frazin’s atmospheric overture In the Forests of the Night and Samuel Barber’s lyrically sweet and elegant Violin Concerto, played by the brilliant BSO principal second violinist Haldan Martinson. And as a fitting conclusion to the season, Pro Arte will perform Mozart’s final symphony, a showcase of the composer’s most adventurous, elegant, and expressive compositional techniques.
A cure for the winter doldrums, our January concert showcases Vivaldi’s only double concerto for trumpet, a bright and fantastic fanfare; Grieg’s charming neo-Baroque suite From Holberg’s Time; Ibert’s Divertissement, a festive selection of his music for Un chapeau de paille d’Italie; and Bizet’s first symphony, the fresh and dazzling Symphony in C. The concert will feature Pro Arte trumpeters Dana Russian and Joseph Foley, all led by Pro Arte’s own dynamic principal conductor Kevin Rhodes.
