(Family Features)Shorter days and cooler
nights mean more timespent indoors. For manyAmericans, this is the per-fect season to take simplesteps toward a cleaner andmore efficient home.
According to a recentsurvey by the CleaningInstitute Organization, 96percent of people think it’svery important to have aclean home. But with fami-ly obligations, busy workschedules and extracurric-ular activities, we some-times fall short. Here aresome useful tips to helpprepare your home for theindoor months ahead, mak-ing it a fresher and moreenjoyable place to be.
Check the perimeter.
Carefully inspect theperimeter of your house.Check window frames andentryways, since you mayneed to re-caulk and addadditional weather strips.Clear gutters and chimneysof debris. Be sure to checkfor insects when puttingaway items such as gardenhoses, outdoor toys andpotted plants.
Store outdoor furniture. Before you store lawn orpatio furniture, scrub eachpiece thoroughly with Arm& Hammer Baking Soda –this natural cleaningmethod means that youwon’t need to worry aboutharsh chemicals washingoff onto your lawn. Bakingsoda can also be used toeliminate odors from seat
cushions or remove thegrease from the grill beforethe off-season.
Wash and weatherizewindows. Clean windowpanes with a simple solu-tion of vinegar and water, which removes the dirt andgrime left behind fromwinds and rainstorms. Then, place storm windowssecurely on each frame tohelp keep your house cozyand warm throughout thecolder months.
Remember to deodorize.Even if it’s too cold to openthe windows, you’ll wantyour home to smell freshand clean. Baking Soda is agreat option for neutraliz-ing unpleasant odors –from the refrigerator andfreezer to the carpets and
furniture. Sprinkle it insports bags, gym shoes, waste baskets, diaper pailsand drains.
Shine your floors. Withallergies on the rise, it’simportant to pay specialattention to the floors – usea product that will cleandeep-down to get rid of thepollen and dirt that is fre-quently tracked into thehome. Don’t forget to cleanbaseboards, corners, stairs,
in-between the banisterspindles, and other hard-to-reach locations wheredust often becomestrapped.
Unpack cold weatherwear. You carefully putaway all sweaters and win-ter jackets last spring, butthat doesn’t mean theyhaven’t been in contactwith dust mites. Rememberto launder clothing beforereturning it to your closets,
and take this opportunity towash curtains and otherfabric coverings. Add onecup of Baking Soda to thewash for an added boostwhen trying to removetough dirt and odors.

(Family Features)Colder temperatures,
snow, and ice can do somedamage on the exterior ofyour home, especially towooden decks. Harsh win-ter weather can deterioratethe wood, ruin the look, anddepreciate the value of yourdeck. Take extra care of itnow so that your deck is intip-top shape for backyardBBQs in the spring. Thereare three steps to winteriz-ing your deck:
First, you should giveyour deck a good wash. There are a number of sub-stances that can get on yourdeck during the summerthat could cause problemsduring the winter. Forexample, mold and mildewcan cause erosion on vari-ous types of wood. Cleaningthe deck can also preventdry rot, which is wooddecay caused by fungi. Startby removing furniture andplanters for storage.
Moisture betweencaught between the deckand planters or furniturecan seep into the wood dur-ing the winter and stain thesurface. Sweep off dirt anddebris while making sure toclear the space between theplanks for ventilation. Aleaf blower can help youclear the surface quickly. Then wash your deck withdeck soap – you can find
specific formulas for eachtype of wood. After wash-ing, give it a good rinse withthe hose.
The next thing you wantto do is restore the deck bystripping and refinishingthe wood. It is important tostrip and refinish the deckbefore staining to ensuresealants adhere to the woodand cover evenly. Powerwashing the deck is recom-mended to remove old paintand stains. Make sure tomaintain a consistent dis-tance from the surface ofthe deck at all times to pro-duce a smooth surface.
The last and most impor-tant step is protecting thedeck with water repellantstain. Stains or sealants pre-vent water, snow, etc., frompenetrating the wood andcausing decay. Ask yourhardware or homeimprovement store aboutthe best high-quality stain
for your type of deck. Using a paint sprayer,
such as the new WagnerPower Painter with EZ TiltTechnology, can makestaining faster and providea professional finish. Apaint sprayer can also helpyou cover those hard toreach areas like railings, posts and underneath thedeck. Spray on a non-windyday to prevent overspray, keep a consistent distanceaway from the surface, andmaintain a steady speedwhile spraying.
The deck is one of yourhome’s greatest assets.Prolong the life of yourinvestment by winterizingit each year. For more proj-ect tips and informationabout what tools to use, visit www.wagnerspray-tech.com, www.wagne-reztilt.com or follow@WagnerSprayTech onTwitter.

Stop at your localrental store for a thatcher, which will slice through thedead materials, lifting themup and out of the way. TheAmerican RentalAssociation’s RentalHQ-.com helps you to quicklyand easily find the nearestrental store to you.
• Prep your gardens -both floral and vegetable -to help minimize the workyou’ll have to do in thespring. Remove all the dead
plants, and turn over thesoil using a rototiller fromyour local rental store, adding a layer of naturalfertilizer like leaf clippings, grass clippings or compost.Don’t make the layer toothick. Everything You Need For Your Elegant Re-ModelOr New Construction Plumbing Projects.
(ARA) - Are you overorange as an autumn deco-rating accent? Bored withrelying on balsam and firtouches to evoke a holidayspirit in your home? If cool-er weather and the comingholidays have you lookingfor new decorating ideas, here are some trends thatwill be heating up interiordesign this year:
Economize and simplify
“People are starting tosimplify their spaces byparing down their decor toitems that show off theirinterests and personality,”says Nancy Hadley, a for-mer design producer forExtreme Makeover: HomeEdition, Trading Spacesand Kitchen Nightmares.“Entertaining spaces willbegin to represent comfort-able elegance and less pre-tense.”
Multifunctional rooms, such as kitchens withoffice, homework and read-ing areas, will speak to thistrend, Hadley predicts.
Anti-season decorand colors
If you’re tired of rustictextures and golden huesfor fall, and you’ve had yourfill of pumpkins and holly, the anti-season decor trendmay be for you. “People are
putting their own spin onthe holidays that is moremodern and sophisticated,”Fong says. “Harvest-themed decor is out, andsimpler accessories in cool-er, muted shades are in.”
Fong predicts favoredcolors this season willevoke a “New Year’s state ofmind” with black, whiteand silver accents to createa clean look. “Colors will becontrasts of bold and vividbeside neutral grays, browns and warm whites,”Hadley agrees. “Accentwalls or brightly coloredfurniture pieces will playoff soothing neutral areas ofa room.”
‘Mad Men’-stylenostalgia
“Mid-century modern
has always been popular, but it’s going to get evenbigger this season,” saysinterior designer JonathanFong, author of “Walls thatWOW” and host of the webTV show “Style with aSmile.”
The hit TV show “MadMen” will provide thedesign inspiration for thetrend, but the desire forcomfort through continu-ing economic challengeswill be what draws home-owners and designers tothe look, he predicts.
“As financial marketsplummet and natural disas-ters proliferate, people aregoing to look for the (rela-tive) innocence of the ‘60s,”he says.
“Look for furniture withclean lines and sleek legs, amuted color palette of graysand creams, and rich wood
surfaces on tabletops andeven walls.”
Eco-influences
Natural influences, likeplant and aviary-inspiredtribal patterns, landscapesand natural scenes or tex-
tures like bamboo willattract homeowners look-ing for both beauty andconservation.
Products like re-usableSmartStick wall graphicswill appeal for both theirbeauty and practicality.Available with an array ofnatural scenes and textures, their modern wallpapermaterial allows homeown-ers and designers to mounta wall mural on virtuallyany flat surface.
The space-age materialis easily removable and canbe moved and re-used overand over anywhere in thehouse.
Log on to www.muralsy-ourway.com to learn more.
Homeowners and desi-gners will also embrace en-ergy efficiency in their inte-rior design, Hadley says.“LED lighting will be bigthis year, and eco-efficientappliances will continue todominate the market.”
Furniture hacking
“Furniture hacking” -transforming or repurpos-ing old furniture pieces -will grow in popularity,Fong says. “Crafters andDIY enthusiasts are takingthe design world by storm.”
Painting or decoupagegives a new life and a newlook to used furniture, oryou may totally repurposean item, like a chair, andturn it into something com-pletely new and useful, such as shelves.
“Right now, my obses-sion is adding graphicimages to plain cabinetfronts and table tops,” Fongsays.
“In the past, I’ve donethis with decoupage, butnow I’m trying theSmartStick repositionablewallpaper. I cut it into pan-els and just stick them onthe furniture.”

NOLA Covington is a locally owned and operated mortgagelending company. They opened their doors in April 2010 to extendmortgage lending to clients in the rapidly growing areas of StTammany and surrounding areas. After opening a single office in2002, NOLA Lending Group, LLC has grown tremendously, andnow offer more convenient locations to reach out to their neigh-bors. NOLA Covington’s location Vice Presidents Mike Ceravoloand Stephanie Weeks, along with their 6 loan officers, bring morethan 20 years’ experience along with other important attributes inthe lending process. They take pride in their profession by bring-ing upon a friendly client based relationship in order to make theloan process stress free and time efficient for all. Whether a refi-nance or purchase, they will take on your process meeting theindividual needs with a quick turnaround.
The NOLA Covington team is here to educate you about youroptions. They will guide you to the best available loan with thebest rate. “We practice common sense lending, a lot of banks denyloans that make sense that we are able to do” Weeks says. NOLAacknowledges it is not as easy to get a loan as it has been in thepast, but the Covington team provides its clients a much betterchance at getting an approval than going through a bank. “If youare able to provide proof of income and the ability to make pay-ments, we can most likely get you a loan even with below averagecredit,” Ceravolo added.
VP Stephanie Weeks states the importance of time managementin the loan process. She has heard first-hand the horror storiesfrom clients who have previously worked with banks that tookthree to four months to close a loan. “Most of our loans close inthree to four weeks, with some taking longer than others!” sheexclaims. “We also have the quickest turn time in the industry. Youcan rely on us getting you to the closing table on time”. NOLACovington wants to make sure they meet all your needs while alsounderstanding the importance of time.
The last, but most important essential is the relationship you willgain with your loan officer. NOLA’s Covington location wants togrow a lifetime relationship where clients feel open to call anytime they have question before, during and after the loan process.
They want to make sure the clients understand they will always beavailable to answer questions and explain with expert knowledge.“Can you shake an online lender’s hand or look them in the eye?”Weeks asked. “We want to be your lender for life.” They are hereto build trustworthy relationships to provide clients with the verybest attributes, trust and reliability.
