Fall Line Ski Club - Powder Express - Page 1 P OWDER E XPRESS March 2019 Fall Line Ski Club Mt. Bachelor By Frank & Judy Angelo As the East Coast shivered, Fall Liners on the Mt. Bachelor trip were treated to a week of mostly bluebird skies and balmy temperatures. There were a few travel glitches on Saturday, but Sunday was a perfect ski day. We had a wonderful breakfast at the Doubletree Hotel. Then we shuttled to Mt. Bachelor, where we were greeted by mountain ambassadors and given a tour of the slopes. Mt Bachelor had plenty of sunshine the next few days as well. Monday’s skiing was culminated by après ski pizza and beer at the base lodge, where we were joined by other members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council. Tuesday started a little colder, but the sun quickly returned. Some of our group was entertained by a Night at the Museum on Tuesday evening which included dinner and displays of local culture and history. Wednesday was another stellar day for those members who skied. Many of us took advantage of the opportunity to snowshoe at Crater Lake, where we were treated to spectacular vistas of the lake and park, and were provided with a “tailgate style” lunch. Dogsledding teams were available throughout the week, and quite a few of us enjoyed this experience. Thursday was another unseasonably warm day with great skiing. Those who reached the summit were able to see the long row of snowcapped volcanic mountains that form the Cascade Range. We joined other Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Counsel (EPSC) clubs for a Hawaiian themed dinner Thursday night. Entertainment included fire dancers and a Hawaiian costume contest. Friday was a shock to us, as dense fog moved in, making it impossible to distinguish the white sky form the snow. This did not deter some of our intrepid members to go to the lunch held by EPSC at the Pine Marten Lodge mid-mountain which we followed bright green jacketed mountain ambassadors down the foggy slopes. Our accommodations in Bend were well situated. Great restaurants and bars were within easy walking distance of our hotel, including the Deschutes Brewery, Brother Johns’s pub, the Jackalope, and the Pine Tree Tavern, which actually has 2 pine trees growing in its dining room! The most unique of the restaurants was McMeniman’s, which was converted from an old Catholic school building. McMeniman’s has a lovely patio with fire pits, and a lot of hidden features. We were told that somewhere in the quirky, rambling McMeniman’s, building there was a secret “speakeasy” bar. After an amusing search, Jack W was able to locate it, hidden behind a broom closet. We all had to reward our successful search with a drink, of course! We wanted to give a shout out to the 10 members of Big Pocono ski club, who became Fall line members in order to join us at Mt. Bachelor. We were thrilled to have such a fun group with us, and hope to ski with you all again!

NONA’S NOTES By the time you read this newsletter, except for

Solden, Austria, this year’s Fall Line ski trips will be a memory and many of us will start to turn our thoughts to spring. Hopefully everyone enjoyed (or is still enjoying) a great season of skiing and I hope everyone on the Solden trip has a wonderful time!

As we enter the last two months of this fiscal year, the Board will be asking the members to consider and vote on an important amendment to the club bylaws. The board has been approached by some members asking that the club consider allowing young people under the age of 21 on club trips. Since the bylaws currently require membership to go on any winter sports trip and members must be 21, those with young family members under the age of 21 are excluded from our trips. After a straw poll that showed there was interest in such an amendment, the board has drafted the amendment and the language is published elsewhere in this newsletter. There are two amendments. The first adds a family membership to the club and will allow a family to join with young family members between the ages of 15 and 21. The second proposed amendment allows non-members on day winter sports event such as a day trip to the Poconos. The language of the proposed amendment is being published in this month’s newsletter for your review andconsideration.

You must be a member in good standing to vote on the amendments. The amendments will require a majority vote to be approved and absentee ballots are permitted as long as they are received before the end of the meeting at which the scheduled vote is taking place (April 16, 2019).

The Board knows this issue has been contentious. It hopes that all members will weigh in on this issue through casting a ballot.

I also encourage anyone who would like to weigh in on such issues in the future (or any other issue) to run for the Board. This club only exists due to the dedicated work of its volunteers including board members, committee members and all of those volunteering to run activities. I have been privileged this past year to work with a group of dedicated board members all willing to bring their best ideas for the future of Fall Line and all those who have given so much for this Club. Fall Line has always been more than just a travel group organizing ski trips. For many of us it has provided lifelong friendship that extends far beyond the ski slopes. I have always been thankful for that day back in the mid-90’s when someone told me about Fall Line and I promptly joined. Let’s all make that opportunity available for future individuals! Consider running for President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, Secretary or one of the three at large Board seats.

The day started off sunny as 25 people gathered for the 7:00 AM bus ride to Palmerton, PA. For some, this one- day trip was a warm-up for bigger and steeper things. For others, it would be their only chance this season to experience the joy of skiing. Good thing we dialed up a great day.

With temps in the high 30’s and clouds building up, we made the most of Blue’s thousand foot vertical. The lift lines were short or non-existent, the snow had a soft, mashed potato-like consistency, and the mountain was pretty much ours. All the trails at Blue are pretty much the same width; the only difference is the pitch. Some are quite steep and one has some real fun switchbacks (hint: it’s not the trail called Switchback). I was skiing with John V., Janice L., Nona O., Julie M., and Barry S. who were enjoying trails like Paradise and Main Street. John V. and myself headed down Blue’s double-black diamond run called Challenge. A few people tried the bump run on a trail called Nightmare. And no one got hurt on the trip. We welcomed some people who were either new or who have not been around for a while: Ken W., Lamonda A., Jim K., Joe L., Hal H., and Harlan W. It was also great to see a “long-timer” (like me) on the slopes again: Joe D., you know who you are. Hope you and Linda had a great time. We hope to see you at more Fall Line events.

Most people headed to the Trail’s End Bar in the Valley Lodge to grab a quick drink before our 4:00 PM departure which occurred just as the rain started falling. Our bus driver, Scott, had us in the D&Q parking lot by 6:20 after avoiding a horrendous traffic jam on the Schuylkill.

Thank you all for joining us at Blue and I hope everyone had a great time. BTW, if someone is missing a Stephen King paperback, I have it. It was left on the bus.

By Kathy & Bob Smith I knew this was going to be a great trip right from the start. Everyone was on time and we were on the road watching the sunrise by 6:00! The bus ride was quick as our driver Scott breezed through Philly and up to the mountains. We enjoyed a continental breakfast and hot coffee on the way up, and we enjoyed watching a couple of Warren Miller films to get us in the ski mood. We arrived to temps well below freezing. In fact it was about 15 at the

mountain all day long! For most of us this was our first day out on the slopes this year so everyone was anxious to get their tickets and head on up.

What a perfect day of skiing. Elk was much more than I expected and I think everyone was pleasantly surprised since we were warned that this was a dumpy little ski area. Well it wasn’t! The lodge was nicely renovated, the restaurant and bar were warm and welcoming and the slopes were in great condition despite having several runs closed due to snowmaking. We still had a great variety of trails to choose from and the slopes were not busy at all. There was something for everybody on this mountain! Unlike other Pocono resorts, Elk provided longer trails than what we are accustomed to. So we didn’t feel like we spent all our time on the lifts. It was definitely worth the extra travel time to ski here!

Several of us had lunch in the restaurant bar area where the fireplace and the hot chocolate and schnapps kept us warm. We were back out after our warm-up to enjoy the rest of the beautiful sunny day that awaited us.

We all arrived back on time and unscathed to the bus and there were a lot of smiles and good cheer happening! The group enjoyed snacks and “camaraderie” during our ride home and we were back to D&Q by 7:30. Thanks to a great group, new friendships were made and a few of the non-members have since joined the club! It was an exhilarating day for sure. I look forward to returning to this mountain!

Check out the club’s FaceBook page where I posted a couple of video recaps of the day – our son wore a go-pro for much of the day and created the video on the way home. BTW the 20 year olds said they had a blast with the old people!
