Tatewyn Bernie is breaking records at Sitting Bull College (SBC) as the first student to graduate from Fort Yates Public High School and Sitting Bull College in the Spring of 2020 as a dual enrolled student. Mr. Bernie was dual enrolled in the Building Trades program at Sitting Bull College while completing his high school diploma. This young man is a true role model and has shown the younger generation what hard work is.

Terry Brown Otter, SBC Building Trades Instructor stated, “Tatewyn was always a joy to have in class. His excitement to learn was the positivity we needed during the COVID-19 pandemic.” That’s right, this young man also fought through the pandemic. The Building Trades Program at SBC was able to finish by cutting class sizes in half and completing all book work online. Mr. Brown Otter mentioned that the trades programs are very hands on and found it a very difficult time for both the instructor and students but they all finished strong. Our hats off to Mr. Tatewyn Bernie for his hard work and we hope to have more dual graduates in Sitting Bull College’s future.

Sitting Bull College 2020 faculty of the year was awarded to Dr. Rachel Kuntz, Master of Business Administration (MBA) Instructor. Dr. Kuntz has been with Sitting Bull College (SBC) since 2016 when she started the implementation of the MBA program. Sitting Bull College started their first MBA program in August of 2019.

Rachel has been teaching since 2008. During that time she also worked on various business support projects which included: product development, market analysis, product research, job costing, cost benefit analysis, burden rates, feasibility studies, etc. In addition she spent over a year in mortgage and has an insurance and financial industry background. She served as a volunteer in the Junior Achievement program, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the CDHRA, and currently is member of the NDSHA. A long term goal is to seek the CFP certification.

Sitting Bull College is honored to have a faculty member like Dr. Kuntz who brings many new ideas and teaching styles to the table. From the short year of teaching the MBA program, the students have strived and advanced their knowledge in management, analysis and community development. Sitting Bull College’s first graduating class in Masters of Business Administration will be the spring of 2021. Faculty of the year is nominated by the Sitting Bull College student body.

Bachelor of Social Work GraduatesBachelor of Social Work Graduates

Sitting Bull College had the first graduates of Bachelors in Social Work this year. The first co-hort of students included Shantelle Cruz, Lauren Taken Alive, Hoksila White Mountain along with Alicia Gourd-Mackin and Leslie White Temple Gipp as their instructors. Gourd-Mackin states, “Little did we know that we were about to embark on a life changing journey, a growing journey of great trials and tribulations”.

Over the course of four semesters the cohort has completed many projects together. One of the memorable projects was the mock intake interview that was conducted in the fall of 2018. The co-hort shared many laughs once they got in front of the camera. They also created a portfolio of many resources that would be of good use to the students as they start their social work careers. Throughout the entire course of the Social Work program the students continually added informative content. The Social Work students also participated in the North Dakota Department of Health Mandated Reporter training online.

Fall 2019 semester was definitely a time of growth. A true growing experience, as Lakota/Dakotas, they researched and observed the similarities between the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics and our Lakota/Dakota values and beliefs. “I have high hopes for future BSW cohorts at SBC. I know with the immense support from faculty and staff and the overall environment at SBC, each social work student will be able to succeed. Not only will each social work student succeed but they will be able to further enhance and grow spiritually, mentally, culturally, and of course, as aspiring Social Workers” stated Mrs. Gourd-Mackin.

The advice that Alicia has for future BSW cohorts regarding the Social Work club and for learning in class is Mitakuye Oyasin. The Social Work Club is intended to collaborate with fellow classmates and other SBC students to create positive movements that can help enhance the environment at SBC as well as our individual lives. Be open to the opinions and beliefs of others and engage in tough conversations that allow you to grow. Be open to sharing your own experiences, this allows you to grow and reflect upon your own life story. Lastly, be open with your feelings and emotions when you’re faced with a trying time. When you overcome the obstacles you will face, you can see and feel the growth that you are enduring.

Summer of ScienceSummer of Science

In the best college and university science programs, students get experience with cutting-edge technology and work with major partners to secure excellent internships and do work that matters. The Sitting Bull College Environmental Science Program has long been a leader not just in the region, but nationally. Recently, the Sitting Bull College Facility for Innovative Atmospheric Research and Education (FIARE) has even furthered this reputation by teaming up with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

This summer SBC FIARE launched its first Atmospheric Science Course, ENS 499. Also, four Sitting Bull College students, Native and non-Native, were selected for and started NASA internships. The students worked with multiple NASA scientists to build air quality monitoring instruments and learned how to measure the air quality in this region. Sitting Bull College also acquired a PurpleAir instrument which can test particulate matter (PM). The Standing Rock Reservation now has one of the dozens of PurpleAir monitoring stations on the continent providing important air quality information. Sitting Bull College already has a professional water quality testing lab, and when done, SBC FIARE will make Standing Rock a leader in air quality and atmospheric data.

Throughout the course, students expressed how important good air quality is to the ways of life of Indigenous peoples. During presentations by NASA on meteorology, students have taught the NASA scientists on wakíŋyaŋ and traditional knowledge about the weather. The fact that somehow scientists from around the country and Sitting Bull College faculty, staff, and students have teamed up to create a world-class facility even in these difficult times really shines a light on the potential for a stellar education at all Tribal Colleges. Former three-time NASA intern and Sitting Bull College graduate, current SSS Director Cara DiMare, said about the partnership "this is filling a major research gap for the area and an incredible opportunity for all involved."

In Fall 2020 Sitting Bull College plans to launch its first atmospheric science-focused Environmental Science Master's Degree co-hort. Sitting Bull College has been approved by the Higher Learning Commission, the regional accreditor for post-secondary institution in the United States, for the past half decade to start granting Master's degrees. The Environmental Science program graduate students have had much success and gone on to work at the local and national level, working in the oil and gas industry, government water quality, and more. The incorporation of more air quality research provides Sitting Bull College students more opportunities, which will doubtlessly benefit the community and beyond.

Sitting Bull College welcomes Arlin Haider as the new Heavy Equipment Operator instructor. Arlin was raised on a farm and ranch on the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and graduated from Fort Yates high school. He went to college at Bismarck State College and received a teaching certificate from Valley City State College. Mr. Haider has 25 years of experience in construction heavy equipment industry working on commercial and residential developments and different size projects.

Mr. Haider is also the instructor for the Commercial Drivers License certificate program at SBC. This is a one semester program which gives students the knowledge and training to acquire their CDL license. Students also learn about the standard safety practices set by OSHA as well as an overview of ND and SD DOT regulations. The College has school buses and tractor trailers for students to practice with as well as driving simulators.

Dr. Lindsey Helm is a 2003 ASN and 2007 BSN graduate of Presentation College. She completed her Masters of Science in Nursing, specialty in Education in December of 2010 and a Doctor of Education this past April through Walden University. She has practiced in a wide variety of nursing areas such as medical/surgical, obstetrics, intensive care, same day surgery and emergency room nursing for the past 17 years. She has administrative experience with long term care and has been the BSN program director for Presentation college for the last seven years. She has worked as a hospice case manager for Compassionate Care Hospice (Gettysburg Office) and was responsible for the start up and managing of the sleep lab at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Lindsey continues to work prn staff nurse as needed for the Mobridge Regional hospital and is part-time virtual coach for Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC Virtual Education. She has taught online and in seat for Presentation college in the traditional BSN program and the LPN-BSN completion program. She is married and has four daughters. She is located in the Sitka area 16 miles east of Mobridge.
