Denise OrtegaRecreation Coordinator

the Eastern Shore. Denise started working with the Ocean City Recreation and Parks department several years ago in numerous capacities and became a Recreation Coordina-tor in October. As she enjoys working with all ages, Denise found the position to be a perfect fit. She coordinates the youth afterschool program, as well as several senior and family programs. When Denise is not at Ocean City Recre-ation and Parks she can be found volunteering at church, leading Girl Scouts and the Berlin 4-H club, or serving as Vice President for the non-profit organization Woman to Woman Global.

Announcing Parks Division PromotionsGary CollierParks Superintendent

Gary Collier was promoted on May 1 to the Town of Ocean City’s Parks Superintendent after serving nine years as the Assis-tant Parks Super-intendent for the

Recreation and Parks Department. Gary began his public service career in May 1990, and has served in various capaci-ties beginning as a Roads Worker with Somerset County. He eventually worked his way up through the ranks to Parks Su-perintendent for Worcester County prior to coming to Ocean City. Gary’s diverse background, including experience in both road and commercial building construc-tion, as well as landscaping and operating heavy equipment, has contributed to his professional growth. He has served in several Recreation & Parks administra-tive roles over the past 17 years and the Town is fortunate to have had such an exceptional leader move into its top Parks position.

Growing up in Princess Anne, MD., Gary graduated from Washington High School and attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on a music scholarship. He was an All Shore & All State baritone horn player in high school and also played sousaphone and valve trombone while performing in concert band, marching band and jazz band in both high school and college. After college, performing in classic rock bands in 1989 became a favorite hobby and Gary has played guitar with Front Page News band since 2009. His hobbies include working in his veg-

etable garden and spending time with his wife Mary and their family, including two grandchildren who all bring a sparkle to his eye every time he talks about them. Mary and Gary recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.

Ron RickardsParks Supervisor

Ron Rickards started working with the Town of Ocean City’s Rec-reation and Parks Department in May 1979 as a seasonal employee, and was hired full-time just a

few months later. Ron has now worked in the Department for 38 years with North-side Park having become his home away from home.

Having worked as a Crew Leader for 25 years at Northside Park, as well as for the North and South Parks Zones of Ocean City, Ron was ready to step into his new role as a Parks Supervisor during the re-cent divisional reorganization. His tenure with the Department has given him the opportunity to see the Parks Division evolve into the all-encompassing opera-tion it is today including town-wide beau-tification of public areas, maintenance of its park system including the 3-acre Northside Park, and managing support for all programs and events among many other impactful tasks. Ron grew up play-ing sports, so working on athletic fields and maintaining the Town’s parks has always had special meaning to him. His goal is to always keep Northside Park one of the finest attractions in Ocean City.

Craig HorvathParks Supervisor

Craig Horvath first worked for the Recreation and Parks Department during the summer of 1980 when he supervised activi-ties at the Gorman Avenue Skate Park.

He returned to work for Ocean City four years later, but this time as a seasonal employee for the Parks Division, soon moving into a full-time Parks Worker posi-tion. His hard work earned him the title of Crew Leader in 1986, where he continued to hone his skills until he was promoted to a Parks Supervisor this past year.

Craig has embraced the opportunity to expand his knowledge of Parks operations over the years by attending the National Recreation and Parks Association’s Parks Maintenance Management School in the 1980s and Supervisory School in 1996. He has thrived in his participation of all Town-offered courses over the past 33 years of his career, including a recent Supervisor’s Management Training program offered to Town Supervisors. As the Town was just breaking ground on Northside Park when Craig began his employment with the Parks Division in the early 80s, it is clear that Craig has seen and been a part of the Department’s tremendous growth. Having worked to maintain every single park within the Town’s parks system, Craig is a wealth of knowledge and is ready to continue nurturing the parks and his team’s care of the parks in the years to come. When Craig is not at work, you can find him riding his motorcycle or out fresh water fishing.

Ocean City Recreation and Parks would also like to congratulate Jarrett Widgeon in being promoted to Parks Crew Leader, as well as welcome two new parks workers, Zachary Flick and Ryan Poole, to the team.

such as, healthy meal preparation, better posture and body pain management, benefits of physical activity and diabetes prevention have been covered plus much more.

In December 2016 a new vending machine (funded by the Ocean City Recreation Boosters and Worcester County Health Department) was installed at the Northside Park Recreation Complex in the entrance of the East Gym. The snacks have been personally selected by Ocean City Recreation and Parks staff to provide a variety of options while keeping nutrition in mind.

Most recently the Town of Ocean City has launched the Sinepuxent Avenue Bike Trail giving bicyclists

a break from busy Coastal Hwy. The Town was fortunate to receive a grant from the Maryland Department of Transporta-tion (MDOT) Bikeways Program for a total of $57,560, which installed a bike route along the full length of Sinepuxent Avenue (130th Street to 146th Street). Moving forward, the Town will be applying for another MDOT Bikeways Grant this year to install a bike route from 118th Street to 146th Street.

The next step for Ocean City is to achieve Platinum status. To be successful, Ocean City will have to provide evidence of how HEAL polices, practices and programs have been integrated into its culture, or everyday life. Stay tuned!

During the June Maryland Municipal League Confer-ence, the Town of Ocean City was recognized for reaching the Gold level of the HEAL Cities & Town Campaign for the Mid-Atlantic.

The HEAL– healthy eating and active living – Cam-paign is a nationwide initiative to promote healthier food options and opportunities for community members to get active. The Institute for Public Health started the program with funding from the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States and a partnership with the Maryland Munici-pal Leagues.

In joining the campaign the Town of Ocean City set forth in several initiatives, including offering health-ier options at Recreation and Parks concession stands and in vending machines, promoting worksite wellness by offering health related materials to town employees, as well as having more accessible bike and walking paths throughout town.

The Town of Ocean City is proud to announce progress on all those initiatives has been achieved starting with healthy vend-ing and worksite wellness. Starting in early November 2016, Lunch and Learns covering many different topics in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle have been offered to town em-ployees in efforts of working towards worksite wellness. Topics

In late June Maryland Governor Larry Hogan joined Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton and Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan to officially open the public 64th Street Boat Ramp. This free, two-lane ramp, located at the base of the water tower, is opera-tional 24/7, 365-days a year with access to and from Assawoman Bay.

The joint state and local project was completed before the start of the 2017 boating season through a partnership between the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Town of

Ocean City. The department’s Waterway Improvement Fund provided 50 percent grant funding for construction of the parking area, and a 100 percent grant for dredging. An additional $200,000 will help extend the channel from 64th St. into Assawoman Bay.

The Waterway Improvement Fund was established to finance projects and activi-ties that develop, maintain or promote Maryland’s boating infrastructure and wa-terways. Between FY08-18, the Town of Ocean City has been awarded $1,165,000 through the Waterway Improvement Fund. The new boat ramp at 64th St. seeks to replace the town’s only other existing public access boat ramp in Little Salisbury.

Excuse Our Dust – Lobby RenovationLate fall through early winter, the Northside Park east lobby will be closed, at times, for a renovation to include improved customer service counters, as well as the incorporation of electronic front doors and enhanced security measures. Patrons of the facility will be routed through the build-ing’s west entrance. Programs are not expected to be affected.

In the SPOTLIGHTProgress…

Worcester County funded the $2 million dollar project through a grant from the USDA. The County will send effluent water from its recently expanded wastewater treatment plant in West Ocean City. The treated water will be used to irrigate the golf course and surrounding areas of the property through more than 1,400 sprinkler heads. Disposing reclaimed water through a sprinkler system is the most ideal way to return it to the envi-ronment.

This project demonstrates how two government entities work-ing together can do so much good for the local residents and environment. The golf course will also benefit by replacing its 25 year old irrigation system with one that is designed using all of the innovations in the golf industry for the past quarter century.

Other repairs at Eagle’s Landing have been made at the clubhouse, including a roof replacement and new landscaping. Eagle’s Landing, which has consistently been ranked among the best public golf courses in the region, is always looking to improve the customer’s experience. The golf course remains a great value to locals and visitors alike.

Northside Park’s Recreation Complex East Gym, located on 125th Street & the Bay, not only sports a new blue and grey polyurethane floor with handicapped-accessible wooden bleachers on each side and new LED lighting but also the ceil-ing has been replaced with a resilient surface that can take on soccer ball impact. Along with the East Gym’s enhancements, the complex’s 30-year-old Community Room has a fresh new tile floor, along with the building’s newly repaired roof and west siding exterior.

These upgrades at Northside Park join the list of several other completed projects, including a newly graded and overlaid parking lot along Jamaica Avenue to help improve the drainage for the Town’s Winterfest of Lights, as well as the paving of half of the Recreation Center’s main lot with the addition of new improved lighting in all the lots.

Northside Park isn’t the only facility receiving attention as Eagle’s Landing Golf Course’s long awaited irrigation project has been completed. The Town of Ocean City and Worcester County worked together to install a state-of-the-art irrigation system at Eagle’s Landing that turned out to be a win-win for both entities.

NRPA Photo Contest Winner!Thank you to the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) for choosing Ocean City Recreation and Park’s Surf Camp photo as the winner in its second week of the NRPA Play Challenge Photo Contest.

With the month of July being National Recreation and Parks month, the NRPA held a Play Challenge Photo Contest with each week having a different theme. The first week, parks and recreation agencies across the nation submitted photos representing how they got their play on at their local parks. The second week agencies across the country submitted photos in how they combine learning and play. During the third week agencies submitted photos in how they advocated for their local parks, and on the fourth week photos were submitted to show each agency’s favorite way to play at their local parks and recreation amenities.

Ocean City Recreation and Parks Surf Camp photo was chosen as the winner in week two out of hundreds of parks and recreation agencies throughout the nation. The photo represented how Surf Camp participants learned how to surf while of course having fun on Ocean City, Maryland’s famous beach.

Ocean City Recreation and Parks was very excited to help share the message of how learning and playing can be combined in a fun way. Thank you to NRPA for the opportunity.

OCEAN CITY BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEEThe Town of Ocean City Beautification Committee works in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks to bring the beauty of trees and color to our barrier island town. The volunteer members are appointed and commissioned by the Mayor and City Council to help determine the needs of the town for the planting, maintenance, and protection of all trees on the streets and in the parks of Ocean City. The members provide assistance by making referrals for the enforcement of the landscape code.

They also engage in a calendar year full of special events and activities. Each spring the Ocean City Beautification Committee, along with second grade students from Ocean City Elementary School, join to produce an Arbor Day celebration for the town. During the festivities, the Mayor is presented with the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA Award and the MD P.L.A.N.T. Award, which is administered by the Maryland Community Forest Committee. Each summer the committee tours the town to review nominated properties for Beauty Spots Awards, which the Mayor and City Council present in September at a City Council meeting. Finally, each December, the committee beautifully decorates City Hall for the holidays.

Please visit the committee on the web at www.oceancitymd.gov/bc/ or email them at [email protected].
