Fall and Part 2 in the Winter. Or take part 1 in the Winter and Part 2 in the Spring! Or Part 1 in the Fall and Part 2 in the Spring! The combination is up to you – just be sure to take both parts, in order, before moving on to more advanced courses. This full-year course is an advanced acting class where you will be challenged to work on a full-length play through work on character development, script analysis, ensemble building, and other skills. The class will culminate with a performance of the play on one of the Citadel’s stages.

Chris Bullough is an Edmonton based award-winning actor, director and theatre creator, co-Artistic Director of wishbone theatre and an Artistic Associate with Toy Guns Dance Theatre. As an instructor, Chris has taught with Concrete Theatre, Victoria School for the Arts, Theatre Alberta and Artstrek and the University of Alberta. Since receiving his MFA in Directing from the U of A in 2016, Chris has directed Bone Wars for Punctuate Theatre (Sterling Award, Outstanding Production for Young

Audiences), the Citadel Young Company production of Sideshow and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Concordia University. Chris is the recipient of a Sterling Award for Outstanding Director for the wishbone theatre production of SHIMMER.

Come and explore writing for the theatre in this low pressure-high intensity weekend. You’ll create characters, dialogue, and dramatic situations, all in the spirit of exploration. We’ll focus on the sense of play in playwriting, doing exercises that spark your imagination and inspire creation. (Exercises may prove to be a valuable resource for educators as well as creators.) By the end of the weekend, participants can expect to have several ideas for short plays and a basic understanding of how to develop a dramatic premise.

F09 • Playwriting 2: Write a 10-Minute Play! Adults • $325/term (+GST) Mondays • 6:30-9 p.m. • Feb. 4-Apr. 8 2019 Prerequisites: Playwriting 101 or permission of instructors Instructors: Tracy Carroll & Conni Massing

The instructors will guide you through the creation of a 10-minute play in eight sessions spaced throughout the term in order to allow writing time between classes. Begin by developing the premise of your theatrical idea (including character, structure and plot), then continue to write and rewrite the play with the guidance of the instructors. The course will culminate with a public reading (with actors) of the short plays.

Feb. 18 & Mar. 11 are writing weeks - there are no classes

Tracy Carroll is an Edmonton-based Director/Dramaturg who has worked as Artistic Associate for Alberta Playwrights’ Network and for the Citadel Theatre. She is the co-creator of Peep Show!, which started during the inaugural SkirtsAfire Festival in 2013. Since then, she has helped in developing 21 new plays written by Edmonton female playwrights. Recent Dramaturgy/Directing credits include Last Chance Leduc by Katherine Koller, The Book of Ashes by Emil Sher, and The Invention of Romance by Conni Massing. She is looking forward to directing Matara by Conni Massing with Workshop West in the Fall of 2018.

Conni Massing is an award-winning writer working in theatre, film and television. Recent stage credits include The Mommy Monologues (Skirtsafire Festival), The Invention of Romance (Workshop West Theatre), Oh! Christmas Tree (Lunchbox Theatre), and her widely-produced stage adaptations of W.O Mitchell’s Jake and the Kid and Bruce Allen Powe’s The Aberhart Summer. She has taught playwriting for the National Theatre School, University of Alberta, Red Deer College, Alberta Playwrights Network, Theatre Alberta and the Citadel Theatre.

F10 • I Can Pretend! Ages 5-12 • $225/term or $395/year Saturdays • 9:45-10:30 a.m. • Fall: Sept. 29-Nov. 24 Winter: Jan. 19-Mar. 9 No Prerequisites • Instructors: Ashley Butler & Brady Hughes

I Can Pretend! teaches children with Autism how to play with peers and form relationships - something that they typically struggle with. Through drama, children learn imaginative play skills and hone social skills. It is a program that is based on research supporting how children with Autism learn, and uses best practice teaching including picture schedules, gamiliar routines, repetition, and reward.

Ashley Butler holds two diplomas from MacEwan University – one in Early Childhood Development and one in Theatre Arts. She holds a Mental Health First Aid certification for adults who interact with youth, has completed the Tattered Teddies Workshop: Suicide Prevention and Intervention for children under 12 and is certified by the Little Warriors in Sexual Abuse Prevention and in the Mandt System in conflict resolution and healthy relationships. She has worked at Elves Special Needs Society in the kindergarten classroom for children diagnosed with challenging behaviours, as well as privately in the homes of families with children who’ve been diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and FASD. She has taught for the Foote Theatre School since 2009 and volunteers for children’s programs at the Canadian Mental Health Association as well as for ABC Head Start: Early Literacy Programs.

Brady Hughes currently works as an interventionist with the Centre for Autism Services Alberta. He is also a fourth-year Recreational Therapy student at the University of Alberta. After working in banking for many years, he decided it was time for a career change. He discovered Drama in High School and joined his hometown’s community theatre group after graduation. Over the years, he has been able to try his hand at many aspects of theatre production. He’s very excited to be assisting with this class.

They will learn how to harness their imaginations, while working with others. With two seasoned improvisors in each class, the students will have hands-on experience with the pros and will appear in two performances over the course of the term. It’s fun for the whole family!

Level 1 • Intro to Improv This is a foundations workshop on the concepts of improvisation, with a focus on agreement and confidence-building. In this class, you will be challenged to start obeying your impulse, and to work collaboratively with others. A great way to challenge yourself and break out of your comfort zone! You will have the opportunity to perform for 15 minutes in the Workshop Performance Series (dates below). Performance is encouraged, but not mandatory.

In your scenes, you will explore your environment in more depth, using narration, object work, soundscape, and more. By the end of this class, you should be able to confidently perform the scariest scene of all: the open scene! You will have the opportunity to perform for 15 minutes in the Workshop Performance Series (dates below). Performance is encouraged, but not mandatory. *You must have permission from your Level 1 instructor to register.*

Level 3 • Advanced Shortform This workshop expands the definition of what scene work is, by exploring different structures such as monologues, split scenes, narration, and edits. Students should be able to set up and play Theatresports games by the end of this class. You will have the opportunity to perform for 15 minutes in the Workshop Performance Series (dates below). Performance is encouraged, but not mandatory. *You must have permission from your Level 2A & 2B instructors to register.*

Level 2C • Scenework: Focus on CharacterLevel 2 is split in to two classes: 2A & 2B. They can be completed in any order, but both classes must be completed to advance to Level 3. This workshop combines all we’ve worked on in Level I, with a focus on scene work and character development. You will develop a variety of tools to create complex improvised characters. By the end of this class, you should be able to confidently perform the scariest scene of all: the open scene! Level 4T • Intro to Thematic LongformThis class is an exploration of The Structured Harold and Harold-derived thematic long format improv. You will work on different openings, and developing a group mind mentality with your ensemble. You will have the opportunity to perform 30-minute pieces, and receive specific notes on your performance.

You must have permission from your Level 3 instructor to register. You may register for 4N or 4T in any order. Level 4 classes are an 8-week course.

Solo Improv IntensivePerforming alone can be a terrifying and electric experience. You are in complete control with nothing to rely on but your own wits. This class, for those who have completed Level 3 or higher, will hone your skills through physical stage craft, multiple character creation, and narrative storytelling, allowing you to perform solo improvisation while giving you the tools to devise scripted solo work.

Improvising MusicalsOur students asked for it and here it is - a special course focused on musical scenes. You will explore song structure, musicality, scene work, and putting together an improvised musical. You will have the opportunity to perform 20-minute pieces and receive specific notes on your performance.

Level 4N • Intro to Narrative LongformAn exploration of long format improvisational structures that are both linear and non-linear narratives, such as directed long forms and Tap Outs. You will discuss advanced storytelling concepts, as well as continue to develop editing techniques. You will have the opportunity to perform 30-minute pieces, and receive specific notes on your performance. *You must have permission from your Level 3 instructor to register. You may register for 4A or 4B in any order.*

Consider becoming part of the Citadel Young Companies – an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. There are four Companies offering specialized training in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting or Theatre Production (for directors, stage managers, designers, and technicians). In addition to training, members of the Young Companies have the opportunity to participate in specialized workshops with a variety of leading theatre professionals. The Young Companies showcase their work at the conclusion of the season with public performances. Auditions for the 2018/19 Acting and Musical Companies will be held July 21 and 22, 2018. Applications for the Young Playwriting Company and Young Theatre Production Company will be accepted through September 1, 2018. Payment, Registration and Cancellation PoliciesFull payment must be made at the time of registration. Please contact the Box Office for details. Registration is available in person, by phone, mail, or fax. Cancellations up to 7 days before the first class will receive a refund of the course price, minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds are available after that time. Please note that there is a $25 processing fee to transfer from one class to another if within 7 days prior to the start of the class. FTS reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrolment. In that event, we will try to place the student in another FTS class or a full refund will be provided.

*Please note that there are no classes on statutory holidays. For 2018/19 there are no classes Saturday Oct. 6, Sunday Oct. 7, or Monday Oct. 8 for Thanksgiving. Nov. 11 and 12 for Remembrance Day, Monday Feb. 18 for Family Day.

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a class is full, registrants will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are received.

All Theatre School classes are age specific. Any exceptions to age limits or applications procedures must be approved by the Director of Education and Outreach.
