Dedicated to creating, preserving and

enhancing our publichiking, equestrian and

bicycling trails

We live in a beautiful area

The Santa Margarita River runs through it…

The last continuously flowing river in Southern California

It is a prime watershed

An area that is one of the last riparian environments in Southern California

An area that is home to unique and endangered wildlife

It is an area rich in history

It is also an area that is vulnerable to fire and vandalism

It is an area that has many inviting trails for hikers, equestrians and bicyclists

Horseback riders say it is the best trail system in Southern California

These are the trails that we are building and want to maintain

So the Trails Council was created

• A part of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy

• A volunteer organization consisting of community leaders

• Monthly meetings • Outreach programs

Benefits of the FLC Trails Council

• Provides hikers, horseback riders and bicyclists with a top-notch trail and pathway system – 1100 acres of riparian Santa Margarita river area

• Promotes awareness and conservation of local plants and wildlife – many of which are endangered

• Reduces littering and vandalism

• Preserves the rural atmosphere • Creates and manages new recreational

areas: 171 acre Santa Margarita Park. • Maintains the 55 acre Sandia Creek Park

and Santa Margarita Trails area owned by Fallbrook Public Utility District

• Plans to open new trails by buying land for public easements

• All of which increases property values

Projects

We want to eventually expand the trails to link to the Pacific Crest Trail

Hard Work and Heavy Equipment

• Volunteers have spent over 2000 hours to date in organized workdays – many more hours individually

• Clear existing trails and build new trails• Buy and install culverts for drainage and erosion control• Buy and install picnic tables, benches and trail signs• Repair vandalized areas• Clean up trash (lots of it!)

Trails Council Accomplishments

• Created Docent Program with SDSU to provide tours of the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve

• Developed Trails Map for 2020 Plan

• Working with San Diego County to create a new 171 acre park

• Created a Field Pocket Guide to Plants and Wildlife of San Diego County

• Installed picnic benches, directional signs and trail markers

• Annual fundraisers

• Regular trail maintenance

• Docent led nature rides and hikes

Historically the area is the sight of the Howe RR Station

Trains from Temecula used

the Santa Margarita

Canyon and they stopped here on their

way to Oceanside.
