    CREDITS:

A paper-mache balloon held by a string floats slowly across

the screen. More quickly, a scroll with a world map on it

floats slowly past behind the balloon. Eventually, the

balloon floats off the screen and all thats left is

    Manhattan.

    INT. AIRPORT GATE - DAY

ANNA BYRD (25), lovely and put-together in a low-key way,

sits in a chair alone, a large bag at her feet. She checks

    her phone compulsively.

An uncomfortable MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN sits across from her,

crossing and uncrossing her legs. A TODDLER walks up to a

BUSINESSMAN and puts his hands on his lap. The toddlers

    MOTHER scoops up the toddler.

    INTERCOM

Flight 1483 to Delhi will begin

    boarding in about ten minutes.

Anna glances toward the main hallway. KIM (40s) puts her

luggage down, starts to sit in the chair next to Anna.

    ANNA

    Oh, sorry, this seats taken.

Anna puts her bag on the seat.

    ANNA (contd)

    Thanks.

    KIM

    Alright then.

Kim moves on. The MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN sighs loudly and takes a

romance novel out of her purse. Anna checks her phone again,

    looks around, concerned.

    EXT. MANHATTAN SIDEWALK - MORNING

Wide shot of a large apartment building. A MAN in a suit

rushes down the sidewalk, spills his coffee. A WOMAN walks in

the opposite direction, rolls a suitcase behind her. A

    HIPSTER carries an elaborate jack-o-lantern.

    A TEEN bounces a basketball, gets distracted by the woman;

    the ball rolls away.

    INT. ANNAS APARTMENT - MORNING

    BEDROOM -

Anna stands at her closet, pulls out two bras of different

    sizes.

Behind her , LOGAN (28) gets out of bed, touches his toes a

    couple of times, stretches.

    ANNA

    Whose bra is this?

Anna holds up the larger of the two bras.

    LOGAN

    Hm, no idea.

    ANNA

This isnt mine. How did this end

    up here?

    LOGAN

    Maybe its your sisters.

Logan walks past Anna toward the bathroom. She stops him.

APRILNo, my sister doesnt wear a (looks

    at size) 36C.

Logan tries to shut the door.

    LOGAN

The fact that you know that is

    creepy.

    Anna holds it open.

    ANNAWho does this belong to?

    LOGAN

What are you accusing me of? That

could be anybodys. You must have a

    friend who wears a 39C.

Logan shuts the door. Anna bangs on it.

    LOGAN (contd)

(O.S.) Can we talk about thislater?

    ANNA

No, were talking about it now!

    She sees clock. 8:10.

    ANNA (contd)

Well talk about it later. Youre

    not getting out of this.

Shower RUNS. Suddenly grossed out, April drops the bra.

    EXT. FOREST - DAY

JOEL MARTIN (26) stands in the middle of a grassy knoll. He

points his camera at an imaginary something in a tree.

Suddenly he hears something sneak up behind him. He turns

around, freaked out. He hears something approaching him from

the other side. He starts backing away from both shadows as a

    beep Beep BEEP grows louder.

    INT. JOELS APARTMENT - MORNING

Wrapped up in a comforter, Joel forces one arm out and bangs

his alarm clock off. He sits up, still wrapped up, plops his

feet down into a pile of silly string. Untangles himself from

his blanket, stumbles out of bed, tracking silly string as hewalks.

He passes the living room, where EVAN (16) is sprawled out,

asleep on the couch. The sink is full of Coors cans. His

roommate, TYLER (20s) burps loudly, passes him in the hall.

    Joel motions toward Evan.

    JOEL

Whos the kid on the couch?

Tyler pats his tummy, burps again.

    TYLER

Uh, no idea. Ask Sam. Hey, Sam?

SAM (20s) opens his bedroom door.

    SAM

    Whats going on?

    JOEL

Do you even know who this is? Heswhat, twelve?

Evan picks a joint off the table, puts it to his lips, eyes

    still closed.

    SAM

Ah, yeah. I mean, I dunno his name.

But he was out with us last night.

I think he was with Brandon. Yeah,

you might wanna ask Brandon about

    that.

    TYLER

    Told ya.

Joel looks at Evan, concerned, starts to walk away.

    EXT. OFFICE BUILDING - DAY

Joel and DAVID (50s) head toward the door of a tall steel

building. Awkward moment as they both reach and pull away

from the handle at the same time.

    JOEL

    Oh, sorry, sir.

Joel opens the door, motions for David to go first.

    INT. LOBBY - DAY

    Waiting for the elevator.

    DAVID

    So how was your weekend?

    JOEL

Oh, pretty boring. (pause) How was

    yours?

    DAVIDWell, the divorce was finally

    settled.

The elevator doors open. They go in.

    INT. ELEVATOR - DAY

Joel presses the button for the 50th floor.

    DAVID

Do you know what it feels like to

have your wife of twenty-five years

telling a packed room how much you

fail as a husband and father?

    SETH (contd)

    Anna.

Anna smiles tightly. Seth stands up at a white board at the

head of the conference table, writes Lil Ninjas III at the

top of the board, turns around.

    SETH (contd)

Sales for version two were down 70%

last quarter, just in time for

    version three brainstorming.

Seth draws an arrow from Lil ninjas III to Ideas.

    SETH (contd)

    Alright, impress me.

TOM (20s) sits on one side of Anna.

    TOM

    Better weapons.

Seth writes better weapons under Ideas.

    SETH

    Like what type of weapons?

    TOM

    Um, bigger ones?

    ANNA

Why dont we work on expanding the

games appeal to girls as well? We

can add some new characters, like

    Foxy Ninja, Pixie Ninja, etc.

ADAM (20s) sits across from Anna, rolls his eyes.

    ADAM

    Cmon.

    ANNA

Im sorry, did I just insult the

    hyper-masculinity of your toddler

    ninjas?

    GEORGE

Is it that time of the month?

    ADAM

We dont want to get pigeon holed

    as a girly game.

    ANNA

Forty percent of gamers are girls.

    SETH

    What are your ideas, Adam?

Adam looks around at the others at the table for support.

    ADAM

    Two suggestions. More chase

    sequences. More gore.

Seth writes More chases and more gore under Ideas. Adam

    smirks at Anna.

    ANNA

We could offer a pared down version

    online, to get people hooked.

    TOM

    Sounds expensive.

    SETH

    Would that be expensive, Anna?

    She looks caught off guard.

    ANNA

Well, I havent done a thorough

cost analysis of it yet, but-

    SETH

    Any other ideas?

    INT. OFFICE - DAY

MIKE (40s) and Joel stand alone in an office. Mike holds up a

    stuffed three ring binder.

MIKEDid you put together this binder?

    JOEL

    For Noah? Yeah.

    MIKE

    You know these are extremely

    important, right?

    JOEL

    Yeah, of course.

Mike turns to a page in the binder.

    MIKE

In that case, you could at least

    collate the pages correctly.

Mike shows Joel that page 50/51 comes after page 47.

    MIKE (contd)

Where are pages forty eight andforty nine?

    JOEL

    They must be there somewhere.

    MIKE

Yeah, they are. Over here after

    page 51.

Joel glances at the door longingly, touches his head.

    JOEL

I feel like I might have a fever.

    Mike holds up the folder.

    MIKE

You know, I have to turn these in

    personally to the attorneys.

Mistakes like that dont just make

you look careless, they make me

    look incompetent.

    Mike hands Joel the folder.

    JOEL

    Maybe the printer messed up.

Mike pauses with clasped hands on chin thoughtfully.

    MIKE

You know, one of the things we

value most here at Owens & Stein is

    the ability to take responsibility

    for ones own mistakes.

    JOEL

Okay okay, Im sorry. My bad. Ill

    pay more attention.

    MIKE

    Good.

    JOEL

But it is just a binder.

    MIKE

No, Joel. Its more than a binder.

    Its your career.

    JOEL

    My career?

    MIKE

Yes, thats what I just said.

    Joel grabs his stomach suddenly.

    INT. WATER COOLER - DAY

    Anna and Seth sip water.

    ANNA

So then you admit that Im not

taken as seriously as these other

    guys?

    SETH

I didnt say that. Look, certain...

actions, once others know aboutthem, are hard to overcome. Not

    that its fair.

    ANNA

    What are you talking about?

    SETH

    Dont make me-

    ANNA

What the fuck are you talkingabout?

    Seth lowers his voice.

    SETH

You know that Im talking about you

and Adam. And its normal that

    thered still be some tension.

    Anna blinks.

    ANNA

    Where did you hear this?

    SETH

Adam told me, on the grounds that I

    never tell anybody, which I

    havent.

    Pause.

    ANNA

    I see.

    INT. OFFICE - DAY

Anna stands in the middle of the office. She claps her hands.

    ANNA

    Attention, everybody. I have an

    announcement. Attention.

Her coworkers look at her curiously.

    ANNA (contd)

    Could Adam Longworth please stand

    up?

    She smiles charmingly at him.

    ANNA (contd)

    Come on, Adam.

Adam stands up weakly, waves at her. Anna acts as if shes

    telling good news.

    ANNA (contd)

Adam. Can you please repeat the

    rumor youve been spreading, to

    Seth here and others?

Seth stares at her in shock.

    ADAM

    about.

    joke?

    SETH

Anna. You can gather your things

    now.

    Anna flashes Seth a smile.

    ANNA

    Oh, and I quit.

    SETHYou dont say.

Anna walks toward her desk. George leans over to Tom.

    GEORGE

So did they eff or not?

    INT. ELEVATOR - DAY

Opens at Annas office. Anna gets on the elevator, holding abox full of photos, books, and other cubicle gear. Joel

stands in the elevator. He holds an ice pack on his forehead.

Anna presses the down button, glares straight ahead. Joel

    peers curiously at her box.

    JOEL

    Long morning?

    ANNA

    You have no idea.

Anna glances at him, not kindly.

    ANNA (contd)

    What happened to your head?

    JOEL

This? This is uh an ice pack to

bring down the fake fever I gave

myself by sticking my head under

the blow dryer in the office

    bathroom.

Anna nods slightly and stares straight ahead. They ride the

rest of the way down self-consciously.

    EXT. OFFICE BUILDING - DAY

    Joel catches up to Anna.

    JOEL

    So. Whyd you quit?

    ANNA

    Excuse me?

    JOEL

    Whyd you quit your job?

    ANNA

How do you know I quit?

    JOEL

I really admire you, though. Iwanna quit my job every single day

    and I never do.

    ANNA

Dont you have to get back to work?

    JOEL

Nah, my boss said to take the rest

of the day off, on account of

    illness.

    ANNA

    What will you do instead?

    Thats true.

    JOEL

    Are you going home?

    Anna looks at her box.

    ANNA

I mean, I have to dispose of this

    somehow.

    JOEL

    Can I come with you?

    She thinks for a moment.

    ANNA

    Yeah. Okay. Sure.

    Joels face lights up.

    JOEL

You wont regret this, I promise.

    EXT. RIVER - DAY

Anna and Joel stand next to the East River. Anna holds her

box of cubicle gear, takes a deep breath. She picks up a

notebook and a couple of folders.

    ANNA

This is for always being the one to

take notes at your inane meetings.

She drops them into the river, looks satisfied. Pulls out a

    mouse pad.

    ANNA (contd)

This is for thinking its still

She throws it into the water like a frisbee.

    JOELOoh, can I do one?

Anna pulls out some supplies, hands some to Joel.

    JOEL (contd)

    This is for status reports.

Tosses cheesy coffee mug into the water along with his ice

    pack.

    ANNAFlorescent lighting.

    Tosses memo pad.

    JOEL

    Awkward happy hours.

Tosses stapler. A few feet away, a POLICE OFFICER notices

them. Anna pulls out two valentines day bears .

    JOEL (contd)Who gave you those?

    ANNA

    My boyfriend. He accidentally got

me the same thing two years in a

    row.

    JOEL

    Sounds like a thoughtful guy.

She chucks them into the river. The bears bobs in the water.

    ANNA

    Thatll show him.

The Police Officer, looking bored, approaches.

    crime, dont you?

Anna and Joel look at each other.

POLICE OFFICER (contd)Can I see some ID?

    They freeze.

    POLICE OFFICER (contd)

Do you kids have ID or not?

Joel starts to rummage for his wallet. Anna takes his hand to

    stop him.

The police officer mockingly pulls on the handcuffs connectedto his belt.

Anna, still holding Joels hand, turns and runs in the

    opposite direction.

Joel looks shocked for a second, but allows himself to be

    pulled.

They dash down a street, turn the corner, stop, breathing

    heavily. Look behind them.

    JOEL

    Do you see him?

    ANNA

I dont think so. Lets not take

    any chances.

INT. RESIDENTIAL STREET - DAY (14A)

They run down the street and pass a street vendor / outdoormarket selling hats and sunglasses.

ANNAAre you looking at your reflection?

    Gross.

    Joel turns toward the SALESMAN.

    JOEL

How much for these glasses and this

    hat?

    SALESMAN

    Forty dollars?

Anna makes a sad face, turns to leave.

    SALESMAN (contd)

Ill give both these things to you,

    thirty dollars.

Anna and Joel both dig into their bag/pocket. Awkward moment

as they try to pay the salesman at the same time.

    ANNAI got it.

    JOEL

No no, dont worry about it.

    ANNA

    No, really, here you go.

They both end up giving the amused salesman half. Anna and

Joel head down the street. He puts his hat on her playfully.

    She bats it away.

    Its a very dapper hat.

    ANNA

A gentleman in a dapper hatenjoying a stiff drink.

    JOEL

Exactly. Should we get a stiff

    drink?

    Anna laughs.

    ANNA

    Maybe we should.

    EXT. BATTERY PARK - DAY

MOXIE BYRD (19), tall and thin, and TAYLOR (19), average

height, take pictures of each other in identical sexy

Halloween costumes in front of the creepy boathouse.

They take various pictures of each other, giggling and

posing, until Taylor points out STEVE (40s), sitting on a

bench with a newspaper over his face. He pulls his newspaper

down slightly to peer at the girls. The girls break out into

    giggles.

    TAYLOR

What does he think hes doing?

    MOXIE

Enjoying the show, I suppose. Lets

    give him his moneys worth.

Moxie stands in front of the boathouse and strikes various

poses as Taylor plays the role of fashion photographer.

Steve watches Taylor and Moxie converse and then Taylor

walks off. Steve approaches Moxie, sticks out his hand.

    STEVE

Forgive me for being so forward,

    but my names Steve.

    MOXIE

    Hello there. Im Moxie.

    Steve pulls out a card.

    STEVE

I work for Double A Model

    Management. Do you currently have

    representation?

Moxie takes the card, can hardly contain her excitement. Lots

    of swallowing.

    MOXIE

    For modeling? No!

    STEVE

    Where are you from, Moxie?

    MOXIE

    Um. Bay Ridge.

    STEVE

    STEVE

And I dont say that lightly so

    dont take it lightly. Not

everybody has what it takes to be a

model in this town. Do you have

    what it takes?

Taylor starts to come back, holding two drinks.

    MOXIE

    I think so.

    STEVE

    Give me a call.

Steve turns to leave. Moxie looks at his card, squeals

silently to herself. He turns back around.

    STEVE (contd)

Oh. One more question. Do you have

    any sisters?

    MOXIE

I have one sister, yeah, her names

    Anna.

    STEVE

    JOELGo on ahead.

    ANNA

    JOEL

I dont trust you. Youre probably

    ANNA

Alright, at the same time. One,two, three.

They both take their shots, smile shyly.

    JOEL

    Why was that so hard?

    ANNA

    I have no idea.

JOELSo lets talk about this boyfriend.

Anna bangs her hand on the table.

    ANNA

    And your girlfriend?

    Joel stiffens.

    JOEL

    ANNA

That always means you have one.

    JOEL

I wouldnt call her my girlfriend.

    ANNA

Do you wanna talk about this?

JOELAnd whats awful is, to most

    people, our lives look glamorous.

    For example, Im sure theres

plenty of people whod like to work

    at a video game company.

    ANNA

    That makes horrible games?

    JOEL

And we live in the best city in theworld.

    ANNA

According to who? Like, I dont

feel like Ive been to enough

places to say that with any sort of

    certainty.

    JOEL

Im from Indiana. And I will tell

you that Im pretty much the

coolest guy in my high school class

    because I ended up here.

Joel stops in front of Idlewild .

    JOEL (contd)

    Have you ever been here?

    ANNA

    I have not.

    JOEL

    Bullshit.

    JOEL

Youre putting a lot of pressure on

    ANNA

Joel looks around the bookstore, out the window, finally back

    JOEL

    Okay.

    ANNA

    Youll do it?!

    JOEL

But can we buy the tickets now?

    ANNA

    Absolutely.

They walk up to the counter, slide the book across. The

CASHIER looks at them curiously as Anna and Joel exchange

    shy, excited looks.

    EXT. PARK - DAY

Anna lies on the grass, her hands behind her head. Closes

    Anna looks through the lens.

    ANNA

This is a really nice camera. Could

    JOEL

    That was the goal.

Joel takes the camera, puts it in his bag.

    JOEL (contd)

    Come on, lets do this.

He opens up his laptop. Anna lies back down.

    ANNA

So then, we can fly to India,

explore that country, and then we

can figure it out from there. Sound

    JOEL

    Okay, the only direct flight

    ANNA

    CHLOE

    Joel isnt paying attention.

    JOEL

    What do you need?

    CHLOE

But its also two hundred and fifty

    doesnt even need a dishwasher,

much less a stainless steel one.

    JOEL

    I dont have an opinion.

    Chloe slams her folder shut.

    CHLOE

    I think its pretty delicious.

    ANNA

    Joels right, Mum. Its good.

DONYou should have coated the meat in

more olive oil like I suggested.

They go back to eating in silence.

    BETH

(to Anna) So hows work, sweetie?

    ANNA

Funny you asked. Um, I quit my job,

    actually.

Don puts his silverware on his plate with a clang.

    DON

    You what!

    Moxie bursts out laughing.

    BETH

    When did this happen?

    ANNA

    It happened this morning.

    DON

Why would you do that? What are you

    thinking?

    ANNA

God, I knew you were gonna react

this way. Theres more to life than

work, ya know? I mean, Im young, I

have a ton of things I want to do.

    BETH

And how do you expect to pay for

all these things you want to do?

    MOXIE

Oh my god, this is so rich.

    BETH

Moneys going to rain down on you

    ANNA

    No. I save, ya know?

Don points his knife at Anna.

    DON

    Thats my girl.

    Anna visibly takes Joels hand.

ANNAActually, Joel and I are going to

    leave the country tomorrow, and

    travel the world.

    MOXIE

    You and him?

Anna nods. Moxie cracks up again. Beth gets up, picks up

    Dons plate.

BETHAnna, sweetie, can you help me

    refill Daddys plate?

    DON

    Hey! I was eating that.

Anna shoots Moxie a mean look, follows Beth to the kitchen.

    DON

You been checked for all venereal

    Joel chokes a bit.

    JOEL

    Of course.

DONGood. What do you do for a living?

    JOEL

Um, I work in a law office.

    DON

    Are you a lawyer?

    JOEL

No no, just a legal assistant.

    DON

What is that, like a paralegal?

    JOEL

    Its the same work, yeah.

    DON

Plan on going to law school?

Joel looks to Moxie for help. She smiles sweetly at him.

    JOEL

    BETH

    Dont use that language.

    ANNA

I dont know why you like Logan somuch.

Beth dramatically counts off the reasons with her fingers.

    BETH

You always told me how reliable he

was, how he loved his career, how

you two were already talking about

    marriage.

    ANNA

So all this really comes down to is

    why arent I married already.

    BETH

Dont put words in my mouth. Thats

    not what I said.

    ANNA

Can we go back in there? I feel

Joel appears in the doorway. He hands Anna her phone.

    JOEL

    You have fifteen missed calls.

Joel stands self-consciously in the doorway. Anna takes his

hand, leads him out of the kitchen, glares at Beth.

    ANNA

    Lets get some air.

EXT. ANNAS PARENTS HOUSE - DAY

Anna and Joel sit on the grass next to each other.

    JOEL

    Should I call a taxi?

    Anna shrugs.

    JOEL (contd)

Can I buy you a glass of wine?

Anna nods without looking at him.

    ANNA

Will you get my bag? Its inside.

    JOEL

You want me to go in there? Alone?

    ANNA

    Oh forget it.

She starts to stand up. Joel sits her down.

    JOEL

No no, dont worry about it. Ill

    get it.

INT. ANNAS PARENTS HOUSE - DAY

Joel enters tentatively. Beth does dishes in the kitchen. Don

sits in a (rocking?) chair in the living room, smoking. A

    shotgun leans against the wall.

    JOEL

Im just here for Annas bag.

Don picks up the shotgun, uses the end of it to pick up

Annas bag, holds it out to Joel. Joel swallows, takes the

    bag off of the gun.

    JOEL (contd)

    Thank you sir.

Don keeps the gun pointed at Joel for a moment, stubs out hiscigarette menacingly. Joel backs away slowly, shuts the door.

    INT. SUBWAY CAR - DUSK

Anna and Joel sit next to each other on the train as it goes

over the East River. With Manhattan and a sunset in the

background, Anna leans over and kisses Joel on the cheek.

    Joel smiles shyly.

    EXT. CAFE - NIGHT

Joel and Anna sit across from each other.

    ANNA

Do you think my sister is prettier

    than me?

    JOEL

    No, why?

    ANNA

But you should tell the truth. If

you think shes prettier, you can

tell me, I wont be offended.

    Joels eyes narrow.

    JOEL

    I dont think shes prettier.

    ANNA

Shes skinner than me, taller thanme. She has bigger boobs.

    JOEL

I dont think you can define this

shit with a list of features.

Thats why it doesnt mean anything

if a guys like, Oh, Anna, you

have the most beautiful eyes, you

    have the best smile.

    ANNA

    Why dont those mean anything?

Those things are nice to hear.

    JOEL

Because if a guy loves you, he

loves all of those things. He

doesnt have to tell you on a

    regular basis.

    ANNAHm. I disagree.

The waiter brings Joel and Anna two glasses of wine.

    JOEL

    If someone says those things

because they feel compelled to say

them, they come off as false.

    Anna sips her wine.

    ANNA

So lets see. We have tickets. We

    have passports. Youll pack

    JOEL

    (pause) Right now?

    Anna smiles, shrugs.

ANNASeems as good a time as any.

Joel gets out his laptop. Anna moves over so that shes

    sitting right next to him.

    ANNA (contd)

    What are you gonna say?

Joel opens up email. Writes as he talks.

    JOELIll say. Dear Mr. Harrington,

Thank you for allowing me the

opportunity to work at Owens and

    Stein. However, I must resign.

    Ooh, nice rhyme there.

    ANNA

    You should say, Effective

She pokes him excitedly. He recoils.

    JOEL

    Can you stop crowding me?

    ANNA

Im sorry, Im just so excited that

    this is actually happening, sorry.

Anna moves her chair over so shes sitting across from Joel

again. Joel clearly presses save message. Your draft is

    saved, says the pop up.

    JOEL

    Okay, its sent.

Anna holds up her wine glass for a toast.

    ANNATo new beginnings.

    JOEL

magnifying mirror. Joel comes up behind her, wraps his arms

    around her.

    JOEL

    What about this costume?

Anna spins around; Joel is holding a long sexy gown and a

    mask.

    ANNAFor me?

    JOEL

No, for me. Of course for you.

    She eyes it suspiciously.

    ANNA

I dunno, that doesnt seem too much

    like me.

    JOEL

Just try it on. Ill bet itll be

    awesome.

    DRESSING ROOM--

Anna stuffs her shirt into her bag, pulls the dress up over

scary costume. Anna jumps. Composes herself.

    ANNA

What the hell do you think youre

    doing?

    JOEL

    Jumping out at you. Its Halloween;

boys are supposed to jump out at

    girls.

    ANNA

    Well in that case.

    JOEL

You look great. Lets get out of

    here.

She surveys Joel in his non-costume.

    ANNA

I dont think were ready quite

    yet.

    EXT. BUSY STREET - NIGHT

Anna and Joel fall into step with the costumed crowd. Joel is

dressed like some horribly cheesy prince.

    JOEL

    Do you like Halloween?

    Anna crinkles up her nose.

    ANNA

    scared.

    ANNA

Theyre like the scary old men of

animals. What would you say youre

    most scared of?

    Joel thinks for a minute.

    JOEL

    I guess being trapped.

    APRIL

Like what would make you feel

    trapped?

    Joel shrugs.

    JOEL

I cant see myself doing all those

    normal things, like settling down,

having kids, going to work every

    day.

    APRIL

    Why would children scare you?

    JOEL

    Not the children themselves. The

fact that your life isnt yours

    anymore.

The crowd gets thicker. Joel and Anna head toward the main

street, getting jostled by other costumed people.

Annas phone rings. She picks it up.

you no. You cant show up here if I

told you no, what the fuck?

Joel looks uncomfortable. Anna watches a motorbike approach

    slowly.

    ANNA (contd)

No, this had better not be you.

She hangs up. Logan drives up, hops off his bike, leans

against it, pouting. Resigned, Anna goes over to Logan. Joel

    starts to back away.

    ANNA (CONTD) (contd)

What do you have to say? Anything?

    LOGAN

    Why do you hate me?

    ANNA

Oh my fucking god, youve got to be

    LOGAN

    ANNA

I should. You cheated on me. I have

    proof.

    LOGAN

    that?

    LOGAN

    in common anymore.

    ANNA

    Thats such an excuse!

    LOGAN

Can we go home and talk about it?

    Anna looks around for Joel.

    ANNA

    No.

    LOGAN

What do you think youre doing?

    ANNA

    Im moving out.

    LOGAN

Youre just gonna move out? Where

are you gonna move to? Your

    parents? You hate it there.

    ANNA

It doesnt matter where I go. It

    doesnt concern you anymore.

    LOGAN

Except that you have nowhere to go.

You dont have money. What, yourejust gonna wander the streets of

New York like a bag lady?

    girlfriend.

    LOGAN

Was that supposed to be funny?

    Because it wasnt very funny.

Anna looks as if shes about to cry.

NEXT STREET OVER-- Joel watches a group of clowns (or other

    funny thing).

    ANNA

    Could you please just leave?

LOGANWhere are you going to sleep

    tonight? Who are you with?

    ANNA

    It doesnt concern you.

    LOGAN

    Except it does.

Logan sulks for a moment, arms crossed.

    LOGAN (CONTD) (contd)

Okay, Im going to leave. (pause)

Ill see you whenever you come

    home.

    ANNA

    Uh huh. Goodbye.

At this point, the parade should have taken on a surreal

quality, where all of the people in the parade look like

fools but Joel cant stop watching.

Float after float passes, with costumed people dancing and

    looking ridiculous.

Joel goes back to where he and Anna got separated. Sees her

sitting underneath the statue alone. He sits next to her

awkwardly, but she doesnt look at him.

    JOEL

    Are you okay?

    ANNA

    Yeah, Im better that okay.

Especially since you ran off and

left me to deal with that in a

    motherfucking corset.

    JOEL

You expected me to get involved?

    ANNA

And naturally its my fault for

    having such high expectations.

    Wipes away tear.

    JOEL

    Are you okay?

    ANNA

Stop asking me that! Is that all

youre gonna do? Just keep saying

the same phrase over and over until

I say fine and mean it? Because

thats a really healthy way to deal

    with conflict.

    ANNA

But its not like I never loved

him, you know? I did love him, at

    one point.

Joel takes an especially large gulp.

    JOEL

    Of course.

    ANNA

Why wouldnt he trust me? Theres

no reason not to trust me.

    JOEL

    He was just saying that.

    ANNA

See, thats what I thought too, but

it doesnt really make any senseotherwise.

    JOEL

    His cheating?

    ANNA

The whole thing. His cheating, his

actions. Do you think he has issues

Anna reaches for the bottle. Joel holds it away from her.

    JOEL

    I think youre okay.

He takes a large swig himself.

    ANNA

And I wanted to too, but I dont

know if I wanted too because I

thought thats what I wanted or if

its because its what I actually

    wanted.

    JOEL

    Whats the difference?

    ANNA

So you would never wanna have

    children with me?

    JOEL

    I just met you!

    ANNA

Not now, obviously. But in the

future, far. Far into the future.

    JOEL

    Thats way too hypothetical a

    question. I could never answer

    that. Could you answer it?

ANNAWell sure. I mean, its only a

    JOEL

    Lets head back.

    EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Anna and Joel head down a street with cafes, slightly tipsy.

    ANNADo you hear that music?

Piano music lilts up from a cafe.

    ANNA (contd)

Dont you think its romantic in

old movies when the guy and girl

just start dancing on the street?

    JOEL

Should we go through with this?

    Anna nods.

    ANNA

    Yes, we should.

Anna puts her arms around her, makes a kissing face. Joel

kisses her. It lasts a long time. He sways her gently to the

music and they start dancing, hesitantly. Anna makes sure

    that nobody is around.

    JOEL (contd)

    What are you thinking about?

    ANNA

    Hm. More kisses?

Joel holds Annas hand and puts his other hand around her

waist, as if they were ball dancing. He kisses her and

    continues dancing, dips her slightly.

    ANNA (contd)

Will you take pictures of me?

    Joels eyes pop.

    JOEL

Stops rummaging. Smells under her arms, puts on deodorant.Through her shirt, pushes up her breasts to make them appear

    INT. JOELS BEDROOM - NIGHT

Anna sits back down next to Joel.

    JOEL

    ANNA

    ANNA (contd)

Isnt it funny how cameras put this

    invisible wall of separation

    JOEL

    Stay right there. Dont move.

Joel gets out of bed, photographs Anna in full in her bra and

    panties.

    JOEL (contd)

Youre so beautiful, Anna. I hope

    you know this.

She smiles shyly, blushes. Click. She sits up, takes camera.

puts camera down, snuggles up next to him sleepily.

    JOEL

Never. I mean, not anytime soon. Is

    the plan.

    TYLER

And youre just telling me now?

    Wow.

    JOEL

This has nothing to do with you.

    Passes joint back to Tyler.

    TYLER

I thought you wanted to do the

    starving artist thing, be a

    photographer.

    JOEL

    Yeah, Id love to.

    TYLER

So why dont you do that instead of

spending all your time in a midtown

    JOEL

    TYLER

If you could be doing anything

right now, what would it be?

    Joel stares ahead.

    TYLER (contd)

Not sitting here smoking a joint

with me, which is glorious, but

anything else, what would it be?

Joel walks up to the edge of the overpass, leans over and

    watches the cars below.

    TYLER (contd)

    Well, theres your problem.

Joel leans over and watches the cars below. Puts one foot on

top of the fence, leans over a bit more.

Joel looks down at the table, hands to head.

    CHLOE (contd)

Like, Im still trying to wrap my

head around what you did last

night. You know, everyone asked me

where Marc Anthony was? They all

    JOEL

Im sorry you had to go through

    that.
