President’s Message

First things first, Hallelujah!! I found my camera with pictures of all of the Falling Leaves race winners at the awards ceremony. Those prayers to St. Anthony worked. The camera was in my glove compartment tucked under some coupons. Go figure. I don’t remember putting it there. Dennis must have.

FUNDRAISER FOR SANDY ARCURIOn to more important Club stuff… All members have received an email inviting you to a fund raiser for the Arcuri family. Sandy, Mark Sr., Mark Jr., and Cassondra have been volunteers to help your running experience be the best when you were at numerous races, the Development Runs, and expos. Right now, they need our help. Sandy had two strokes this summer. Medical and rehab costs have been over the top and now our friends need our help. Join the crowd at the Deerfield Firehouse on the corner of Trenton and Firehouse Roads on Sunday, November 2 from noon to 4:00 PM. Help us out by attending ($20/person), donating baskets, money, and/or food. Contact Mike Kessler if you have something to offer. I will put together a few baskets with Club apparel and race entries. Even if you are not able to join, why not buy a ticket or two! Thank you very much!

ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETINGThe Utica Roadrunners will host our Annual Meeting at the Saranac Brewery on Monday, November 10th at 6 p.m. It is time to review the year’s progress. You have all received the nominations for the 6 vacant Board of Director seats. Please read their write-ups. If you do not vote online, you can vote at the meeting. All members are welcome to attend even if you already voted. There is no cost to you, so that’s another reason to come on over, talk to friends, tip a couple, and dhave some snacks.

NOVEMBER RUNSNovember ends up being rather quiet when it comes to running events right here in the Mohawk Valley. The Club Calendar lists the Turkey Trot at Weller Park on Saturday the 8th. There is the Run for Safety at the Masonic Home on Tuesday the 25th. Then on Thanksgiving Day, You can go to Utica or Rome to run. Of course, I am partial to the Run/Walk to End Hunger right at the Parkway. It is the 30th Anniversary, and a good time will be had by all! Just look at the announcement in this SpliTimes.

CLUB HISTORYHere is a little Club history that recalls fond memories for me. Back in the mid-70s when the Club was just beginning, a couple came to Utica from California. Bill Dyer was the new Lieutenant Commander at the Naval Reserve on Mohawk Street, about where the Hannaford Store is now. He had a friendly wife named Connie. Both of them ran and they joined the Club when they heard about the Utica Roadrunners. Bill is in the back of the picture of the first Falling Leaves Race that was on the front of the September SpliTimes. Anyway, Bill ran well – he had run in the Olympics that were in Japan, but I forgot the year. The Club held parties in the Dyer home in Clinton at least twice a year. There were always lots of happy times as we supported the local brewery, fraternized, ate, and danced. Unfortunately, all good things must end and so did Bill’s assignment. In 1984, the Dyer’s moved back to Santa Ana. I visited many times and they came back to Utica too. This picture is of Bill and Bob Carlson, the first Club president, when the Dyers visited in 1994. Bill is the tall guy. Well, in 2008, Connie died suddenly. And just last month Bill died. When a mutual friend called to relay the sad news, I was mad at myself for not visiting Bill since Connie died. He was such a great guy. Besides Dennis and Carlson, I think that Bill had the biggest influence on me when it came to running friendships. Rest in Peace, Bill.

Hope to see you at the Arcuri Benefit and at the Annual Meeting! While you are training…Be Careful Out There!

Letter from the Editor

Community.

One of the greatest things about running is the community that surrounds it. Learning

about runners’ backgrounds, milestones and journeys into the world of running helps

keep us all stay motivated, interested and trying harder. Learning about each other in

our local community weaves a tighter thread and strengthens our pride.

I would like to put a challenge out to all members to think about how they can

contribute.

I’ve very much enjoyed working with Rob Trotta on his new column – “The Casual

Runner...” and I’ve loved following Steve Tibbit’s 3-part series on his Ironman journey.

I know you have, too. The Utica Roadrunners has a strong membership, with hundreds

of individual stories. Why NOT share yours?

Check it out, I’ll even throw out some ideas:

• Write an article on your journey to your first 5K, 10K, half or full marathon

• Are you into nutrition? Consider sending us recipes or healthy eating tips.

• Are sneakers your thing? School us on how to pick out a great pair.

• Are you a tech geek? Review some gadgets!

• Do you like to take photographs? Submit some shots for the newsletter or social media!

• Have you trained someone and have your “Top 10” favorite tips to share?

• Is there an app you use that could be beneficial to other runners? Review it!

• Are you a high school athlete (or do you know one?) that should be featured?

• Are you a coach that has a keen insight into young runners that you could write about?

• Have you read a good blog post, watched a great video or read a great book

on running? Tell us about it!

So many options that will all strengthen our local running community. .. I could go

on and on.

You don’t have to tackle anything insanely lengthy, hard or stressful. Just share.

I guarantee people will love it and it will inspire more folks to step forward. We will

strengthen our running community even more and keep the inspiration flowing.

I’m always on email --- [email protected] --- drop me a line if you have an idea

and let’s get it in the next SplitTimes!

2014 ELECTION BALLOT

splitimes November 2014 7

To all members of the Utica Roadrunners: There are brief biographies of each candidate for the Club’s Board of Directors below, as submitted by the candidates. Please take the time to read each one and then vote for up to six (6) candidates for the Board of Directors. There is also space for you to write-in the name(s) of another member(s) if you so choose.

Jeff AdamsHello, my name is Jeffrey Adams and I have been running for over 30 years. Running has been an escape for me because of my wife’s battle with breast cancer since 2009. Running has always been an important fixture in my life, meeting with friends for training runs, and races are some of the best mornings I have had. Running is all yours, no one can take it from you. I feel I would be a great addition and am a great team player. Please consider me for a seat. Thanks so much, Utica Roadrunners do an incredible job. On one last note would like to thank my running friend Karl Jones for continuing to be an inspiration to me.

Daniel Alder My name is Daniel Alder and I am interested in becoming a Board Member with the Utica Roadrunners Club. I have been running now for 12 years, and have been with the Club for three years. I joined the Club because I was impressed with the friendliness and high quality of the members. The races put on by the Club have been outstanding in all regards! The professionalism is second to none! The Wednesday night Development Runs are a gem that have helped me and my wife Jill improve our levels of fitness beyond our goals. I felt warmness and a true bond from all Club members as I met each and every one! I have worked directly with Dennis Johnson at General Electric, Utica NY years ago in the good old days! We both share an Electrical Engineering Technology background that I am sure can help with the Club in many aspects. Thanks for the opportunity to hopefully become a Board Member!

Karen BakerHi! Karen is a fair-weather, when-time-allows runner but loves to run all the same. I’ve been a Utica Roadrunner for a few years now and am ready to contribute more to a great group! Keeping it simple!

Cory BattlesCory Battles started running on the Adirondack high school cross country team and ran cross country and track at MVCC. Cory moved to Utica in 2003. After years of only running the Boilermaker off and on, he got back into competitive running in 2009, including representing the Utica Roadrunners in the Comrades ultra-marathon in South Africa this year. Cory has been on the Board of Directors since 2012 and contributes to social media for the Utica Roadrunners as well as the Grand Prix and is looking forward to continuing his role with the club.

Melanie CrisinoI have been running for 4 years now and a member of the Roadrunners for 3. I got started with the Roadrunners through the Boilermaker Training Program, which I have been asked and accepted to head this program up for 2015. This is one of the reasons that I joined the Roadrunners, to introduce the joy of running to others. I have been on the board for 1 year now and was elected Secretary by the members of the board, a position that I have happily fulfilled. I would like to continue serving the Roadrunners as a member of the board to continue the work of the club bringing the joy of running to others.

Ann Marie LatshawMy name is Anne Marie Latshaw and I am interested in the position of Board Member within your organization; Utica Roadrunners Club. My history with running is at best, a good read. I began running off and on in high school. I enjoyed the sport, however I did not experience the passion I viewed on the faces of others. During my College years, academics became the priority only to be replaced with the need for gainful employment after graduation. Since this

time, things have changed. I have committed to consistency with running over the past four years. Beginning in 2010, I made a lifestyle change to lead a more active and healthier life. The first step toward my transformation involved join-ing Weight Watchers where I began my battle with weight loss. I am happy to report that I have successfully lost over fifty pounds. I have kept this weigh off for over three years which enables me to proudly retain the title of a Lifetime Member. Reducing my weight enabled me to increase my exercise. I am happy to report that I ran my first boilermaker in 2010 with four more under my belt as of this year! I have also ran three half marathons. One of my biggest running accomplishments and overall lifetime achievements occurred last October when I finished the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon in Albany, NY. I consider myself to be an average runner, plugging along mid-pack, all the while striving for consistency and of course embracing new achievements. I enjoy sharing my journey in an effort to inspire others! I continue to value good health as evidenced through my balanced diet and sustained exercise routine. I feel blessed to have joined a running community where networks have been formed and friendships made. I am thankful to the Utica Roadrunners for embracing my volunteer efforts especially at the Utica Development Runs on Wednesday evening. Being a Board Member, would enable me a greater opportunity to “pay it forward” for others and to publicly serve as an inspirational role model for our running community.

Stephanie StarkHello, my name is Stephanie Stark. I have been running with the Utica Road runners for the last 3 years. With the help and training from the group and the friends I have made through the group, I have run 2 Boilermakers and a half marathon. I would like to take this opportunity to be on the Board to give back to an organization that has helped me achieve goals I never thought I could. Thank you.

Jeremy WestJeremy West has been a Utica Roadrunners member since 2009. Jeremy is committed to introducing running to our local youth and promoting physical fitness and participation. He is a Local Meet Coordinator for the Hershey’s Track & Field Games for youth ages 9-14 and the race director of the Utica Roadrunners XC Invitational. Jeremy is a RRCA and USATF Level 1 Certified Coach. He coaches varsity cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field at New Hartford. He also directs the Sisu XC Development training program and Sisu Running Camp for kids ages 12-18 through his coaching business, Sisu Athletic Development. Jeremy is active in the local running scene and a member of the Utica Roadrunners Racing Team. He has a marathon PR of 2:44 and a Boilermaker 15k best of 54:33.

It’s official…… the Boilermaker has moved into its new home at 805 Court Street

across from the Brewery. It is a great building with plenty of space and best of all

it is right at the Finish Line!

After unpacking boxes we noticed that we have about 125 books on running and fitness. Some

books are new and some are old but all are very interesting to read through. We decided to share

these books with the local running community by starting a lending library. Although we have a

variety of publications, we could use a few more current books. Please look through your shelves

and night stands and consider donating your running books to the Boilermaker library. If you are

interested in donating or browsing our collection, please email me at [email protected] or

The Casual Runner:Words on Running for the Rest of Usby Rob Trotta

Imagine running a race that takes eighteen hours or longer.I can’t, therefore I don’t run them.

For the last several years, however, I’ve been serving as a sort of “pit crew” for a friend of mine whose newest kick is running ultra trail races. This friend (we’ll call him Jack), has utilized me as his crew person for years, progressively working his way up through longer and longer trail races. The pinnacle (so far) of his eccentric endeavor culminated late September at the Virgil Crest trail races down in the Finger Lakes. This race in-volved up to 100 miles of trail running through gruelingly rugged terrain that included nothing short of going up and down the black diamond ski slopes of Greek Peak. Anyone who tackles a course like that has a few screws loose, but I digress.

The race began at 6 AM, well before sunrise, after I awoke from a poor sleep (we had camped out). The course brought the runners through a series of aid stations spaced roughly every five to ten miles deep in the woods. My job, which would last continually for at least the next eighteen hours, began by driving the back roads to meet Jack at each of the aid stations in order to supply him with pre-packed drinks, food, other supplements, and ibuprofen. The parking area for many of these aid stations were at least a half-mile hike from the station itself, thus requiring strenuous effort lugging Jack’s fifty-pound supply bag. As you could imagine, after doing this about fifteen times all the way into the wee hours of the next morning, my mood was pretty sour by 2 AM. Regardless, Jack’s health and overall performance while running nonstop for almost a full day depended on my diligence and presence at each station.

I’m a science teacher by trade, so planning, organizing data, and recording and analyzing observations are my specialties, and I employed these attributes to Jack’s race. Prior to the trip down to Virgil, I studied the course map and organized the names and locations of all the aid stations and the distances between them into a chart and included multiple columns for the number of laps Jack had to run. As he came through each station, I recorded his arrival and departure times and made notes about what Jack would need me to prepare for him in terms of food and drink for the next station. My records gave me an indication of how long it took him to run in between stations so I would know how much lag time I had before meeting him again. This tool became invalu-able in keeping me organized and Jack refueled. (I did have some help with some of this—thanks, Cory.)

As the day and night progressed, we started seeing the same people and their cars parked in the same place as we crewmem-bers moved through the course’s stations to assist our runners.

Many people dropped out, but Jack stayed the course well into the following morning. At certain times I was able to sneak in some magazine reading and I even took a 20-minute cat nap in my car around 1 AM. Helping Jack depended mainly on the efforts of one of my favorite molecules—caffeine.

Jack’s race was a success, and ironically enough, despite the course’s torture, Jack seemed less exhausted than me when it was all done. Then again, after eighteen straight hours of being on duty, I was probably hallucinating.

We arrived in Lake Placid on Friday July 25th. I am very excited to finally be here and see Ironman Village set up in the Olympic Oval. Most of the people who have supported me on this journey are with me and more are coming on Saturday. This group, Lorrie (my wife) Mike and AnneMarie Ambrose, Chris and Pam Raulli, Mike Kessler, Linda Turner, MaryLynn Paniccia, Mary Beth Fiorentino, Brian and Maryann Snow, my nephew Mark Scanio and his family who opened their home in Lake Placid for all of us to stay and avoid the high lodging rates. I head down to the Convention Center to pick up my Ironman packet and prepare my bike as well as gear bags and special needs bags. The excitement is contagious!! My supporters are so excited to watch this and I think they want to do it too!!

Friday night we relax and enjoy dinner, it’s impor-tant that I get a good night sleep Friday because Saturday… no way I’m going to sleep.

Saturday morning I head out with Paul Bisaccia for our final warm up. A short 20 minute bike check & 15 minute run. Out on my run I see another Road Runner from here, Lauren Mattia. It’s amazing when you go to Lake Placid and almost always see some-one you know from the Utica area. It’s like home away from home.

I pack up my bike and head down to bike loading and placed my bike into the transition area. I pat it

on the seat and whisper..”see you tomorrow Fritz” Yes – I named my bike Fritz... after 3,000 training miles on that seat I felt he deserved a name!

I attempt to relax all day, but it’s difficult, not nervous, just excited. Tim Leonard and Paul Bisaccia also competing, are texting me and we make game day decisions via those texts. One big decision… do we pack our rain gear in our bike gear bag so we have it at the start or do we put it in special needs and grab it at mile 56 the start of the 2nd lap if we need it then? We chose special needs. Bad choice!! It poured from at start! Hmmm, why didn’t we just bring two and put one in each… lesson learned!

It’s now about 5pm, I am sleeping on the couch and it suddenly seems very quiet, so (this sounds odd I know) but I wake up… there in front of me are 15 of my support crew all dressed in high vis yellow t-shirts with the slogan “Wrong Way Steve” a lean mean brain starved machine on the front & Team Tibbits Ironman, July 27, 2014 on the back. It was an amazing sight, I needed my sunglasses, they were so bright and I had just woke up. I had no clue as they had put together a secret Facebook page to communicate their plans. Thank you to Mary Beth Fiorentino for the design work and Mark Scanio for coordinating this wonderful surprise. I think I had the largest contingent of supporters on that course it was pretty emotional to see all of them together in those shirts cheering me on.

Sunday morning I wake at 3am, eat a bagel with peanut butter, have a cup of coffee and relax. Coffee and relaxing are a BIG, BIG part of any endurance

event… especially if you want to take care of business before you leave for competition! 4am I repeat this break-fast and get myself ready to head down to the swim start.6:30 am the pros head out and the amateurs start to roll out towards the water. I am in the 1 hour 30 minute corral. I look to the shore and I see this group of high vis yellow…there they are yelling my name... snapping photos giving me goose bumps... what support!! I have one sad moment when I look up on shore and I see my running partner Mike Ambrose cheering for me. Oh how I wish he were on that beach with me in his wetsuit ready to complete Ironman with me. He could have done it that day but his day will come. He had joined me on so many swims, runs and rides. I really wanted him there too.

I hit the water at 6:50 and swim my first lap 1.2 miles then reenter the water for the second lap… there is myhigh vis yellow team actually standing in the water... pants rolled up… giving me encouragement!

I am heading back to shore with about 300 yards to go when the boat safety crew is yelling for us to exit the water at the shore to our left due to the electrical storm that was upon us. Thunder and lighting was crazy... I exit the water and am disappointed that I am closer to the actual finish then where I had to swim for the exit but to disobey the orders was a disqualification.

I head to transition, put on my bike clothes and start the bike loop. It is pouring out and the thunder and lighting is still everywhere. I start to think… I should have put that rain jacket in my bike gear bag. I start to get a chill and now it’s time to make the long decent into the Keene Valley. It is a 7 mile rapid de-cent where you can easily reach 50+ mph. Not today… the roads are soaking wet and it’s cold and the wind chill was about to shiver me to the bone. By the time I reach the bottom of

the Keene decent I am shaking so bad it was hard to keep the bike in a straight line. I know that I can finally start to pedal again and will hopefully warm up soon. Over the next 10 miles I do warm up and start to ride my bike to make up some lost time. The bike ride was fabulous from that point on and at the end I was happy with my time. I was 18th in my age category so now it’s time to run.

I was now thrilled to have my sneakers on and changed into my running clothes as I run out of transition waving to my support crew that had volunteered that day and positioned themselves at several locations, so I couldn’t miss them. I’m wearing my hi vis yellow Team Chicago/AK5K running top from my first marathon. I chose this top in honor of my Team Chicago running partners and a reminder that life is precious and can be suddenly and tragically taken away.

My first 13.1 loop was great... a 2:04 half marathon after a 112 mile bike ride… I’ll take it!!

Now I head out on my 2nd loop… all is good... getting a little tired… mile 16… BONK! I feel a little nauseous, and breathing is a little harder. So I walk one mile, this will only add 5 minutes to my time and it’s the smart thing to do at this point. I still have 10 miles to go. I complete the second 13.1 in 2:44 so my marathon total is 4:48 but I am elated as I run into the Olympic Oval hands above my head, waving, the crowd is going crazy and I finish my last mile at 9:34 pace same as my first 3 mile avg. It’s amazing what a crowd can do for your adrenaline.

I look to the top left bleachers... and there they are…team Tibbits with that beautiful high vis yellow screaming my name so loud you can’t even hear Mike Reilly the announcer say...”Steve Tibbits you…are…an….IRONMAN” My catchers (everyone gets them to assist and assess you) are Kimberlee & Doug Gardner, also a six time Ironman himself. Kimber-lee gives me a hug, Doug guides me to the medals, then they guide me to the bleachers… there she is… the most

beautiful girl in the world… my amazing wife. She squeezes her head through the side & gives me a kiss. What a mo-ment I tell you. I have trained for 7 months and she has been an Iron widow while I prepare for Ironman and it was a moment I will cherish forever. The rest of the team is right there... high fives pats and hugs all around. I feel the greatest sense of accomplishment I have ever felt in my life.

Then I realize one very important lesson. Ironman taught me so much about myself. You see... life isn’t about me. It’s those people around me that have loved and supported me throughout this journey. Without them this would not have happened nor would it have mattered.

My parents taught me to dream and always do my best. That if there was something I wanted in life I could attain it with hard work. Thanks Mom and Dad – it is a life lesson for everyone to hear!

My friends called, mailed me cards, sent text messages, asked how it was going… genuine interest in my journey, joined me at times in my training, you are all so amazing and I love you all!

Lastly, my wife. I don’t even know where to start. She gave me unwavering support the entire time encouraging my training, washing my stinky clothes, buying the groceries so I could consume massive quantities of food, hugging me and telling me how proud she was of me. Giving me all the space I needed to wrap my head around the training.

It is because of all these people that I accomplished this goal. And I can proudly say I am an Ironman because of all of you.

Finally, I signed up for Ironman LP 2015, and am sooo excited because that guy on the shore watching me enter the water who had done so much training with me signed up too. Mike Ambrose… in 2015... you will be an…
