Athena and Yonah, two American black bear cubs, arrived at Bear Hollow Zoo in April.

These orphaned cubs were found in Fannin County, Georgia after their mother had been killed by poach-ers. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources contacted the Zoo about the possibility of placing them at Bear Hollow because they are imprinted and non-releasable due to being orphaned at such a young age and having been raised by people.

The former river otter yard has been renovated to house the cubs and pro-vide public viewing of the animals for the next year or so. However, the cubs will outgrow this temporary ex-hibit quickly so efforts have begun to raise funds to renovate and expand the existing black bear exhibit to house all three bears who reside at Bear Hollow.

The new bear exhibit will feature a larger night holding building for the animals with dividable night quarters so that each animal can be separated from the others if neces-sary. An additional day yard will be constructed off exhibit so that all animals will have outdoor access, even if they cannot all be on ex-hibit at the same time. Infrastructure needs such as water, electricity and additional fencing will also be part of this new construction.

Fundraising efforts are underway and your help would be greatly ap-preciated. To find out more informa-tion about the bears and their exhibit or donation opportunities, please call either Bear Hollow Zoo at (706) 613-3616 or Memorial Park at (706) 613-3580.
