Hello!

We’re loving this early spring weather – nothing beats the early morning bird tweets, blue skies (hoping we’ve not jinxed it now) and longer evenings. Our moods are lifting, we’ve even considered doing some exercise (considered, not actually done any yet), and Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” is a favourite on the iPod.

All in all then, the perfect time to be thinking about Parties, which is our focus this issue. Don’t miss our great piece on page 5 on how to survive the dreaded sleepover as well as how to avoid other party themes the kids love but you hate!

Celebrations all round!

This May welcomes the annual National Share-A-Story Month, a rousing celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing.

Run by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups, it’s a wonderful opportunity to bring children and stories together. There are a whole host of events running across the country, from storytelling workshops to craft activities and puppet shows, and this year the theme for National

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and it’s taking place from the 1-7 June this year.

Volunteering can make a real difference to your own life and the lives of those around you, but it’s important for anyone thinking about giving their time to find a volunteering opportunity which is right for them, whether it’s supporting a victim of crime or helping

Parents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two, as part of new reforms to help families.

With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. ‘No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,’ said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. ‘There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear. Today’s announcement will mean more

Lily’s “Flipping” brilliant birthday bash...By Jayne Keep

For Lily’s 9th birthday party we went for something totally different … aerial circus skills at Blush Dance in Stockport. I thought this would appeal as both Lily and her sister love their weekly gymnastics lessons so this was a twist on a theme for them. It seems I made the right choice; my two and

their six friends had an amazing time.Although it was a birthday party, the

session actually ran like a personal class. It was a solid two hours of learning how to do some pretty impressive moves on the aerial hoop and silks. Of course there was a good warm up, and it ended with a performance to parents using all the moves they’d learned in the session. There were a lot of smiles and giggles and plenty of teamwork, as the girls partnered up to assist each other with each new move that was skilfully demonstrated by our two lovely party hosts/instructors.

The instructors were very hands-on and encouraging; they gave the girls the confidence to try things they didn’t initially think they could manage. I was so impressed at the amount they worked through and the progress each girl made. My 6 year old Izzy had the most incredible time and showed some real flair, so much so that I think we should actually send her to the circus!

Surviving the sleepover and other party problems solvedBy Sarah Butters

SleepoversLet’s face it. They shouldn’t be called sleepovers. They should be called stay awake overs because you will sleep about as well as a meerkat balanced on a branch and the kids won’t sleep at all. However if you follow a few basic rules, you may survive. Keep the numbers low. As far as sleepovers go, more is definately not merrier but it is noisier. Keep them busy – I’ve heard tales of parents setting up night time obstacle courses to exhaust their pint sized house guests. Remove electrical devices at a reasonable hour and make sure you have a note of all parental contacts. As sure as night follows day someone will get homesick at about midnight and infect everyone. For those who do survive the overnight stay, arrange for an early collection. It gives you the day to remove Haribo from your beige carpet, and you’ll only have your own sleep deprived, sugar shocked child to deal with.

SwimmingMost mums are reluctant to strip off to a swimsuit when the sun is shining and the sangria’s flowing. So the thought of doing it in front of your school gate ‘chums’ while at the local pool is unthinkable. However a swimming party is always a popular choice. Avoid hosting a swimming party for younger children – wait until your child and their friends are fairly competent swimmers, thus removing the need for parental submersion. Seek out a pool that offers an inflatable soft play area – you’ll find these at many council run pools – and you’re guaranteed a splashing time. Many such pools have a low rate room for hire so you can follow the wet fun with a homemade party tea to keep costs down. ArtDon’t try this at home. No seriously. This is one to hire a hall for and call in the experts. Arty parties are fab fun but frankly terrifying if you have a home that you’re proud of. The idea of a dozen Reception children attempting to find the toilet, while their hands are coated in a mixture of purple paint and glitter is enough to make your reach for a lunchtime Sauvignon Blanc. We have some super local providers who can save you the stress of a

pre-school redecoration of your home. Try your local pottery café, or a nearby art class and put off the wine till tea time!

How to avoid serving a can of worms at your child’s next celebration...CAN yOU….say no to siblings? Most of us wouldn’t dream of turning up to a party uninvited. Yet some parents feel it acceptable to bring along a string of siblings and presume they too are welcome.“They won’t eat. In fact you won’t even know they’re here,” cry the parents as they sprint out of the door, while said siblings begin pilfering from the pre-prepared party bags. The point is if you’ve budgeted for 20 and catered for 20, you’re ready for 20 children – not 25. Very often entertainers insist on a maximum number and siblings can tip you over the limit, and in turn, tip you over the edge. Prevent the problem at the point of invite and make the sibling rule clear. A simple ‘Sorry, no room for siblings!’ means there’s no question. I find the addition of an exclamation mark makes you look fun and not mean.

CAN yOU…..exclude individual children? This is a tough one because as a general rule, you should stick to one of 3 party invite rules. 1. Invite the whole class – this is perfect for

Reception age children2. Invite all the girls or all the boys – this

becomes popular as children head into KS2 and the opposite sex become toxic

3. Invite a few close friends – this works when you’re keeping the budget down or as you head towards the end of primary school.

However there are exceptions. If your child is the victim of a classroom bully, you’ve grounds to exclude that individual. This is YOUR child’s special day and they’re entitled to enjoy it without fear. Excluding problematic children is more difficult. Instead, it’s best to ask the parents of said child to stick around to offer a helping hand.

CAN yOU…..fine a parent for a ‘no show’?There is little more irritating than the parent who confirms their child will be joining the party, only for them to leave an empty chair at the birthday table. The tale of the mum who billed a parent after they failed to show up to her son’s skiing party certainly made party no shows THE talk of the playground. Was she right to have sent the invoice? The reality is there will always be ill-mannered individuals who choose to accept an invite, and go on to make other plans without letting you know. In a world of text messages and emails, a no-warning no-show is simply unacceptable. But it’s also inevitable at some point in your party-throwing life. Invoicing a parent may make the headlines and also make you feel better for a while, but it’s likely to alienate your child and make YOU the subject of ridicule at the school gates. Our advice is to make a point of asking what happened to those no-shows when you next bump into the parent. In my experience you maximize the middle class embarrassment the more parents there are to witness it.

A really different type of party, so much fun, plus good exercise! Definitely one I would recommend for older girls who may not want the traditional type of party any longer, or even for adults as a birthday or hen party.www.blushdance.com/kids-parties

Parents’ place

Mr Daddy Day Care – what’s it like being a stay-at-home dad?

“I do the overwhelming majority of housework. Cooking is probably 50/50. My wife works very long hours so I have to be hands on with housework.”

“The best thing about being a stay at home dad is knowing that you play a major role influencing, shaping and developing your children. I am honoured to have such a major part to play and it’s something many men miss out on. The worst bits: one is the isolation, the other is the latent, casual sexism I sometimes face simply because people expect my wife to be the one who is hands on with the kids.”

“My wife does sometimes wish she were around more, but she will freely admit she is happy to let me run the household as she thinks I am better at it (...yes really).

John Adams is a stay at home dad and dad blogger. He’s married with two young daughters and has also just written his first book. He tells us

what it’s like to be Mr Daddy Day Care.I’m often asked what it’s like to be a

stay at home dad. I like to think a mum would answer in exactly the same way. My life is busy and demanding. It also incredibly rewarding as I watch my children grow and develop knowing I’ve helped them along the way.

I have the two daughters. Helen is six and Elizabeth is two. Of course having daughters presents me with a few additional challenges as I have had to get used to dealing with girls’ haircare and, certainly with my eldest, had to talk about issues such as menstruation.

I may not be best qualified to deal with such things, but as a stay at home dad, I just have to get on and do it!

Recently the Daily Mail published an article about three toddlers, Ellie, Amelie and Wsam who accidentally swallowed button batteries. Their heartbreaking stories demonstrate the devastating damage that the batteries can cause if swallowed. In Wsam’s case, the battery killed him.Why are button batteries so dangerous? The electrical charge from the battery creates caustic soda inside the body. This can burn a hole through major blood vessels and children bleed to death.

Button batteries are found in many different household items. Amelie’s mum thinks it was a new battery for the kitchen scales. Ellie’s mum suspects the battery came from a TV remote control.

Act now. Please help us spread the word about button battery safety to all parents and carers. The full Daily Mail article can be found at www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2969115/

If I were to be totally honest, one of the biggest issues I have to deal with is isolation. Support networks and social networks for people with children, especially young children, are almost exclusively set up for mums.

For me personally, it’s possibly not the biggest issue. I’m reasonably confident and sociable and I have many friends who are mums and many who are dads. As a dad in my position, however, I think it definitely takes that bit longer until women feel comfortable and happy to approach and speak to you socially. I certainly know of other stay at home dads who have

struggled with this. In the past I have

had some horrendous experiences. I once took Elizabeth to have some inoculations and the

nurse started physically looking round the room before asking where my wife was. It was an odd question; is a man not capable of booking and accompanying his child to an appointment at the doctor’s surgery?

When it came to registering Elizabeth’s birth, my wife stayed at home and I took our new-born with me to the registrar’s

office. I appreciate the registrar probably meant this as a backhanded compliment, but she told me I was “brave” for going out on my own with my daughter. To her it may have been a compliment, to me it was actually quite offensive. It basically suggested I didn’t have the knowledge to look after her.

Having had a few similar experiences I learned a trick. Whenever I meet a healthcare, education or childcare professional, I tell them within the first few seconds that I am the one who looks after the kids and that my wife works full time. When I do this, it tends to get any awkwardness out of the way and I find am treated appropriately. It’s when I don’t do this, I find things can go wrong and I get accused of “babysitting” my own kids (a comment I hear from time to time).

I became a stay at home dad in 2011. It happened for purely practical reasons. We’d had Helen in nursery full time for a short while and we no longer felt this was appropriate. I wasn’t

particularly happy in my job and my wife had the better career prospects. It made

sense for me to leave the rat race and stay at home and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

At the time we only had the

one daughter. Needless to say we’ve had one more since then!

I started a blog about my experiences in late 2012 called http://dadbloguk.com. At first it was simply a hobby. Over time, and to my great surprise, more and more people started reading and commenting on the blog and so it has become a cottage industry I fit around my family and I eventually decided to write a book.

It’s called ‘A modern father (…and dad blogger)’. At just 60 pages long it’s a very easy read and it’s been written in a style that you can dip in and dip out of as you please. It focuses on my experiences as a stay at home parent but I couldn’t resist writing just a little bit about being a dad blogger. It’s available from Amazon in both paperback (£2.75) and Kindle formats (99p).

Fashionable UV swim protection for 0-12s

Positive Birth Movement grows

Sand Dollar Swim is the hot new name in kid’s sun protection. Launched by ex-model and fashion designer Maureen Dolan, Sand Dol-lar Swim’s fun and vibrant designs appeal to both children and parents alike and are made from the best quality Italian UV fabrics.

Set up less than 2 years ago by mum and writer Milli Hill, The Positive Birth Movement has rapidly grown and now boasts over 150 groups in the UK alone, with hundreds more worldwide.

Positive Birth Groups are completely free to attend and are a place for all pregnant women – regardless of their background, experience or choices – to come together and share experiences, thoughts, feelings and insight about childbirth. Many are run by birth professionals such as doulas or midwives, while others are organised by women who are simply passionate about birth as a positive experience. Positive Birth Groups aim to be a helpful part of pregnancy, a warm and welcoming place to hear stories and ideas. Consider what you really want from your childbirth experience, learn about your rights and choices, and challenge any fears or negative expectations you might have. The classes usually have tea and cake on offer too! Go to www.positivebirthmovement.org to learn more about Positive Birth and how to find a group near you.

Their debut collection offers rash vests, shorts, one piece suits, bikini bottoms and hats all in fun and funky colours and designs featuring details such as sparkles, rooching and frill detail and all in the most comfortable, breathable SP 50+ fabric.

All the pieces are fast drying and machine washable and cater for children from 0-12 years.

Check out the full collection at www.sanddollarswim.com and make sure your little ones are ‘too cool to burn’ this Summer.

Parents’ place

Managing your child’s screen timeMost families enjoy sitting down and watching a film together and for many parents letting their children play on games consoles or computers gives them valuable down time or chance to sort dinner or tidy round. But in recent years there have been growing concerns about how much time children spend staring at their screens.

A report by Ofcom found that the average 3-4 year-old spends three hours a day in front of a screen. This rises to four hours for ages 5-7, 4½ hours by ages 8-11, and 6½ hours for teenagers, which makes for pretty sobering reading.

Whilst most people agree that some screen time can be beneficial and help children with their learning and development, most parents are concerned that children and teens spend too much staring at a screen instead of playing or socialising with their peers and try to some extent to limit the amount of time their children spend watching TV, playing computer games or sat with their iPad or smartphone. Amanda, owner of Giddy Goat Toys in Didsbury has kids of her own and understands the battle parents’ face.

“My two boys love playing computer games, especially Minecraft; at times it can be a struggle to pull them away from their screens, but as a family we enjoy getting out for walks with the dog, playing board games, reading and doing craft activities together. I always say a little of what you fancy does you good, but everything in moderation is best, especially screen time.”

It doesn’t take much to set up a fun craft activity that they can enjoy doing with you or by themselves. Giddy Goat Toys have the biggest range of Djeco arts and crafts sets in Manchester, including colour by numbers, glitter art, mosaics and origami, with colouring sets starting at just £3.50 – there is something for all budgets.

Whilst there are no set guidelines in the UK for how much screen time is good for children (unlike in Taiwan where parents are legally obliged to monitor their children’s screen time and can be fined if their children use screen excessively!) child development experts agree screen time should be monitored and that parents need to lead by example and not be constantly checking their own smartphones whilst with their children – something most of us are guilty of – and also recommend establishing routines such as computer games just before bed, or no screen time in the afternoons.

With summer approaching, there’s plenty in store at Giddy Goat Toys to keep kids entertained outside and encourage them to enjoy the fresh air, including an award winning range of scooters as well as traditional hula

hoops, skipping ropes, footballs, kites and nerf guns, not forgetting coloured chalk for an impromptu game of hopscotch!

Giddy Goat Toys have an impressive and varied selection of interesting and unusual toys, games, puzzles and books which can help tear your children away from the TV. Whether they’re into role-play, construction toys, colouring or craft, there’s all that and more in store at Giddy Goat Toys for toddlers through to teens, helping you help your children to enjoy their screens off time and encouraging them to be creative, sociable and engaged.

Go outside, be adventurous, be active. What are your most treasured childhood memories?

Research suggests a majority will be based outdoors; building dens, climbing trees, rock-pooling? Today things are different and children are spending increasing amounts of time indoors for many reasons.

Adventure, excitement and the great outdoors are important for all young people. The outdoors is a great place for children to practice and master physical and motor skills and develop a healthy, active lifestyle.

Outdoor activities can also help your family develop a range of skills together. Team working, communication and self-confidence can all be reinforced through

outdoor adventure and play and what’s more, it helps your family to keep fit and have fun!
