Bath is the only World Heritage Site to be featured in the secondpart of the Royal Mail’s A-Z of Great Britain stamp set; with a breath-taking image of early morning mist rising from the Roman Baths – theonly Roman monument to be immortalised in the commemorativecollection.

Stephen Clews, Manager of theRoman Baths, said: “The image onthis beautiful stamp captures Bath &North East Somerset Council’sRoman Baths as you can see it on acrisp winter's morning, with dawnlight breaking. In the early morningthe baths can be a calm and quietspace with mist rising slowly from thewaters, allowing the viewer toimmerse in tranquil solitude.Photographer Mark Passmore hasdone an excellent job in revealing thisvery special moment in the daily lifeof the baths.”

The City of Bath was inscribed as aWorld Heritage Site 25 years ago in

We are both keen swimmers and swamthroughout our pregnancies, then promptedby our love of the water and in Nik's caseher partners nervousness of the water, bothtook our daughters to Turtle tots from a fewweeks old and were amazed at how quicklythey progressed and enjoyed it so much thatwe decided to retrain.. we met whilsttraining and have now gone into partnershiptogether and haven't looked back!

We believe that swimming is a greatfamily activity but also an essential safety skillthat all children should learn as early aspossible.

Turtle tots is a fun and innovativeswimming programme that begins duringpregnancy with our Turtle tums, aqua yoga classes and continues until school age. Themajority of babies start classes at about 6 - 10 weeks old, but we recommend babiesstart in the pool sooner rather than later.. our youngest ever was a 2 day old!

Not only does our programme focus on teaching babies and young children toswim, it also promotes pre-natal and post-natal fitness and provides you with anexcellent toning work out, endorsed by personal trainers.

Our classes are fun and sociable for everyone but more importantly the childrenlearn essential life saving skills whilst developing emotionally and physically. The classesprovide a really special bonding experience.

Our classes form a progressive programme so we teach something new each weekand build on learnt skills in every class. We ensure that every baby or toddler is taughtat a pace that suits them.

At Turtle tots we believe in supporting local causes and are proud to be supportingthe Cots for Tots Appeal, which supports special care babies at St Michaels Hospital inBristol. A percentage of every class booked will be given to this worthwhile appeal.

Lighting theway toLondon 2012From an original article by Rebecca Carr

Did you know? From an original article by Allison Thomas• The ancient Olympic Games was a series ofcompetitions held betweenrepresentatives of several city states and kingdomsfrom Ancient Greece. They were part of areligious festival held in honour of Zeus. • According to legend, it was Heracles who firstcalled the Games ‘Olympic’ and established thecustom of holding them every four years. • The Ancient Games featured running events, apentathlon (running, wrestling, javelin, discus andlong jump), boxing, wrestling and chariot racing.Winners were crowned with wreaths from asacred olive tree that grew behind the temple ofZeus. • The Games were at their most popular inGreece until 6BC and then began to wane inpopularity as the Romans became more powerfulin the area. • The first Modern Olympic Games were held inAthens in 1896 and featured athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weight lifting and wrestling. From 241 participantsrepresenting 14 nations in 1896, the Games havegrown to about 10,500 competitors from 204countries at the 2008 Summer Olympics. • The 1900 Olympics held in Paris held some ofthe strangest Olympic events to date – includinghot air ballooning, live pigeon shooting, poodleclipping and delivery van driving. • In 2012, London will become the first city tohost the Olympics on three occasions. • Great Britain was one of 14 teams to competethe 1896 Summer Olympics and has sincecompeted at every Games. • In Beijing 2008, Great Britain came 4th in themedal table with 47 medals – 19 golds, 13 silversand 15 bronze medals. China came top with 100medals.

There are now 56% more children diagnosedwith autism than there were five years ago.It is highly likely that there is a child in every

class somewhere on the autistic spectrum. Formany of us, the 'Rainman' stereotype is our onlyreference point. It was a great film and afascinating insight into a complex and challengingdisorder but it has coloured our perception ofautism for two decades and much has changed.

As with most disabilities, our understanding islimited by our personal experience.

Different or Deficient?By Joanna McNiff

Autism???We often associate autism with poor

social skills and difficulties withcommunication but there is so much

more to discover. There is no prescription for an autistic cure but I havewitnessed the benefits of early intervention. Parentscan access an array of treatment approaches fromtrampolining to intensive behaviour programmes. It is

Autism...... Different or Deticient???

often difficult for the parents of a newly diagnosedchild to carve a pathway through the forest ofinternet advice and chat forums to formulate astrategy to enable them to 'connect' with their childand build the skills which will allow them to achievetheir potential. Autistic children often require earlyintensive support with communication, sensorydifficulties, challenging behaviour and social skills.Young children tend to respond positively to theseprogrammes and begin to use facial expression andeye contact to communicate. This helps toreduce anxiety and frustration and can havea positive impact on their behaviour.

Autistic children can move along thespectrum of disorder and can challenge ourexpectations. Those diagnosed withAsperger's Syndrome have high functioning autismand can be bright, intelligent and capable but lackingin some of the basic social mores that we take forgranted.

Indeed there are many 'quirky greats' associatedwith Asperger's Syndrome.

For those of us who live with autism, the onlypredictable thing about it is the unpredictability. There

is little argument that it is a baffling condition – thechild with autism may look 'normal' but his behaviourcan be perplexing and downright difficult. Yet,individuals with autism are showing us that they canovercome and compensate for many of autism's mostchallenging characteristics. Equipping parents, teachers and those around our children with a simpleunderstanding of autism's most basic elements has atremendous impact on their ability to journeytowards productive and independent adulthood.

One of the best ways to enjoycycling is in a group, and there’sno better group than your own

family! Children as young as 2 years old arenow able to cycle using balance bikes, sothere really is no excuse for the wholefamily not to join in. We are all aware ofthe problems of obesity and with ashocking 10% of children in the UK nowclinically obese (British MedicalAssociation), cycling is a great way to spendquality family time together, get fitter and –after the initial equipment has been bought– it’s a cheap, fun activity.Choosing equipment Bikes need to complement your lifestyleso, before you buy, think about where youwant to use them. Depending on the agesof your children and your levels of fitness, you may need racers or mountain bikes forsporty action, hybrids for a mixture of roadand trail riding, plus smaller models andbalance bikes for the children. Whilst youtend to get what you pay for, the mostimportant part is the right size frame. If youalso intend to use your bike to commute, find out if your employer runs a cycle-to-work scheme – you could save up to40%. Once the bikes are chosen, remember to take a spare inner tube and apuncture kit to keep them moving, plus agood quality helmet and a drink. It’s alsoworth investing in a bike lock so you canpop in for tea and cake en route!

Cycling with kidsOriginated from an article by Karen Wood

Stay safeAccording to a recent Sustrans survey, more than half of us believe the roads aretoo unsafe to cycle on, but The NationalCycle Network provides safe and attractiveroutes perfect for family bike rides. Local Cycle PathsThe Bristol to Bath Railway Path is apopular 13 mile route and the first majorproject undertaken by Sustrans, it is opento walkers and cyclists with accessprovided for disabled users. The path alsofeatures a variety of sculptures (including adrinking giant!) and working steam enginesat the old train station at Bitton (AvonValley Railway). There are ideal stoppingpoints for drinks or snacks or perhaps youcould enjoy a pub lunch in Saltford. InBath, you'll find a variety of ways to spendthe rest of your day including the RomanBaths, art galleries, shopping. For full detailsof access points, facilities and heritage, visitthe official website atwww.bristolbathrailwaypath.org.uk

Kennet & Avon Cycle Route an 85 mileroute from Bath to Reading is anotherpopular route, which combines towpathcycling with diversions via country laneswhere the path is less suitable. If you don’thave a bike you can hire one from theBath & Dundas Canal Co. for details visitwww.bathcanal.com. For further detailson local routes please visitwww.waterscape.com/canals-and-rivers/kennet-and-avon-canal/cycling.

Lead from the frontIf you want your kids to be fired up aboutcycling then you need to lead by example.Women who thought their bike days wereover are being welcomed at rides designedjust for women – check out Breeze andCycletta (see boxed for more info). Theyoffer a great chance to get back on yourbike in great company.

Children also make wonderful cyclingcompanions –they’re adaptable, energeticand want to have fun. Just follow our

simple guide to ensure that it’san enjoyable experience!

Before the Ride...Do your homework: Make certain youare familiar with the bike route. If you getlost or the route is longer than expected, your child may suffer not only from adiminished experience, but potentially inmore serious ways such as dehydrationor exposure – older children will enjoythe planning too and might even learnsome geography if you look at a maptogether.Start early: Children tend to tire quicklyin the afternoon. Take advantage of theirenergy in the morning and start your rideearly.Invite playmates: Cycling is more funwhen shared. If your child has a friendwho is at the same level of competencyon a bike, bring him or her along.Slow down: Realize that a 4-mile ridemay take 2 hours. Don't expect to ride asfast as you would on your own.Be aware of traffic: What might seemlike light traffic to you could be a moredangerous situation for your child, whether biking separately or in a trailer.Be prepared: Carry a tool kit and know

how to use it. Also, carry a first-aid kit thatincludes a few bandages and antibioticcream to handle minor cases of road rash.Dress right: Bring a daypack to holdextra jackets in case the weather changes. Also, try to wear bright clothing orreflective sashes, to aid your visibility. On the Ride...Take breaks: Plan on taking a lot ofshort breaks. Allow time to stop, get offthe bike and explore.Drink water: Always have water readilyavailable. Try to drink before feeling thirstyto stay hydrated.Eat snacks: A well-timed snack candefuse a squabble or bad mood and keepenergy going. Kids tend to misbehavemore when they're tired, hungry orthirsty.Make it fun: Choose an interestingroute that goes by gardens, streams, views, farms or a favourite shop. Mostchildren are interested in what they cansee along the route rather than what's atthe end of the road or trail.Express enthusiasm: If you convey agenuinely upbeat attitude, children mostoften will be inclined to mimic it.

Birthday Traditions –12 ways to createmagical momentsInexpensive and cleverways to make the most ofa child’s birthday bycreating some funtraditions to make a child’sbirthday a special day torememberBy Elisabeth Dolton

1. Big-Day Countdown Make theapproach to their birthday important. Hang agarland of seven envelopes, each with a smalldaily goodie, leading up to the grand finale.2. Decorate and Titivate The night beforeyour child’s birthday sneak into their room anddecorate it with a special sign wishing them aHappy Birthday. Blow up balloons and putbirthday wishes all over the house. 3. Bake a cake Make a birthday cakeinstead of buying one. Your child will appreciateeven a simple cake made from a mix. Getyour child to pick out what they want theirbirthday cake to look like, a rocket, princesscastle, favourite animal, etc. 4. Have a special meal Have breakfast inbed awakened by the whole family singinghappy birthday. Create a beautiful tea party toenjoy the finger sandwiches and tea. Let thebirthday child pick the dinner menu howevercrazy their wishes.5. Have a ‘birthday’ plate Have a specialplate that each child uses for meals on theirbirthday. The same could be done for abirthday eggcup, a special seat at the table, orhat they have to wear all day. 6. Opening presents Hide presents aroundthe house and provide clues to help your childfind them. Follow a ribbon to their first gift, orunroll string all around the house that takethem to their presents. 7. Celebrate them growing up Create aphoto banner of your child’s annualphotographs. Take a family photo on the same

settee every year put them in a scrapbook thatyou add to every year. Ask them their favouritecolour, ice-cream, hobby, etc., note themdown and do this on every birthday. 8. Capture the moment Get out thecamcorder and interview your child about thespecial things they have done that year, includeprops like their award-winning science projectthat year, their sports trophies, the self-portraitthey did of themselves, etc. 9. Special family events Do the same walkevery year, have dinner at the same place, gosledging, have a picnic on the beach. Doactivities that are typical of what you are like asa family, e.g. if you are a musical family, hold aconcert, if you are outdoorsy plan a boat trip. 10. Annual additions Plant a tree orflowers that bloom annually around your child'sbirthday. Ask grandparents to add to a charmbracelet or commemorative coin collectioneach year. 11. Tell a Tale Let the birthday child stay upa little later after the other children have goneto bed and tell them about the day they wereborn, and how you felt when they arrived.12. Remind them of how special theyare A simple way is give each member of thefamily a birthday candle, then pass around asmall dessert. Each person puts in their candleand tells the birthday girl/boy something theylove about them. They pass the dessert to thenext person, who does the same untileveryone has added their candle, light thecandles and sing Happy Birthday.

can be a daunting prospect for most parents toentertain that many children. If this is the case thencall in KIDZFUN.

Prices for a two hour interactive party rangefrom £90.00 to £150.00 depending uponrequirements.

Popular party themes include pirates, princessesand knights, fairies, outer space, under the sea, super heroes and circus.

However if you are going to run your own partycheck out this list of do's and don'ts from Kidzfun Sally

DO• Welcome each child into the party space and give them a name tag. • Arrange a simple and fun activity/game to do as everyone is arriving.• Have a table/place to put presents and coats.• Have someone to help with any child's individual needs• Use an outdoor space for at least some of the party if you can.• Be flexible and always have a game up your sleeve.• Go with what the children are enthusiastic about.

DON'T• Open the presents at the party, its sensory overload!• Give them food first or have it out on the tables before time (disaster!)• Play games with a long waiting time.• Play too many winner/loser games.• Use a sound system that’s not up to the job!• Have loose balloons lying around, it invites wild games and big bangs!
