Family Update Downtown633 S Pearl*South Campus4128 S Connecticut*Joplin, MO 64801 www.fbcjoplin.org September 10, 2014 Church family, I know tonight's family dinner is very difficult because Dave isn't here and we can't act like it's not different. I'm sure many of you are sitting around reminiscing and laughing as you remember him and eat together. And that's good- you know Dave would want that. He always loved to laugh and loved to tell a story. Many have asked me about a memorial service for Dave. As some of you may know Dave specifically requested that there be no memorial service. I know this is hard to consider because Dave attended every memorial service that I can remember and he always commented on how nice they were. I have wondered a lot why he added that in his arrangements and I don't know why he did. But what I do know is he did not want one. Whatever the reasoning it was his decision. Though I don't know, I can speculate. Dave didn't like to be in the limelight. He did what he did as an offering to the Lord. You probably didn't know that he would help clean up after Wednesday meals this summer. You probably didn't know that he came up to the church once a week to pick up trash in the parking lots and around the building especially on 7th street. Many didn't know that he was up at the church offices all throughout the week checking on the finances and sorting the mail. You may not have known he was the host for mission teams that were coming to Joplin after the tornado. He would have an orientation for the groups, show them around the facilities and try to meet any other needs they had. Many times he would come up to the church when the alarm would go off during the middle of the night downtown or on Connecticut and stay until the police arrived or walk with them through the building until they knew it was safe. Obviously, we lost more than a treasurer. Those are just some of the behind the scenes ways Dave served. He loved doing what he did and was comfortable doing it out of sight of the church. Dave had been in this church for many years. He had joined in on many impromptu conversations after friends had passed- conversations that took place in the office, foyer, his Sunday School class and fellowship hall. He had these conversations with his friends as he walked the mall and ate at Braums. He would remember and comment on how special each one was. Somehow I think Dave knew there would be a memorial - just not one with his picture (which he despised), not one in the sanctuary, not one with an order of service or me telling you all what I thought of him. Something like tonight is probably what he imagined. One like he had participated in often. His good church friends sitting around a table eating a meal and remembering how much he meant to them.
