Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) National Standards supported by Parenting: It’s a Life Curriculum
A reference guide to how Parenting: It’s a Life (PIAL) curriculum objectives align with many of the standards, benchmarks, and competencies required in FCS classrooms across the state of Iowa.
The PIAL project is a partnership between Iowa State University, the Iowa Department of Human Services Child Support Recovery Unit, and the Office of the Iowa Attorney General.
PIAL’s Mission
Our mission is to equip Iowa youth with life skills and introduce them to the emotional, social, and financial realities of being a parent by providing a free, relevant, and research-driven curriculum to schools and youth-serving agencies across Iowa.
PIAL’s vision is to empower Iowa youth to be good stewards of their decision-making responsibilities across their life span.

Mrs. BrottCallanan Middle School
“This is my third year having Iowa State students coming from the Parenting: It’s a Life project. They like it; they always have questions the next day about parenting, and they didn’t realize that it costs so much as a teen parent. I think it’s a great way to introduce the students to parenting because if they don’t get it now in middle school, this will be their only background and knowledge of parenting.”
