Although there are many classes available for toddlers, until recent times, there has been a lack of classes for younger babies.

A notable exception is Baby Sensory. Unlike many other activities for babies and toddlers, little ones can attend these classes more or less from birth, with classes usually split into two age groups e.g. 0-8 months and 7-13 months. As you might expect, Baby Sensory classes work to engage your baby’s senses through a range of different activities. Typical Baby Sensory props include tickling feathers, bursting bubbles, wobbling jelly, light shows and the use of fibre-optics.

However, if you don’t have a Baby Sensory class near you, there’s no reason to despair, as providing sensory stimulation to your baby is something that is easy to do at home, often without even realising it. Dr Philippa Kaye, GP, mum of three and author of The First Five Years, explains: “Parents will find that they naturally stimulate their baby. He will be enchanted by your face with its changing expressions, your smile and your voice.

“Baby classes can be a great opportunity to expose the baby to a wide range of activities that stimulate them in a variety of ways, to giving ideas which parents then take home and by providing a social structure for both the parents and babies. So, if you can afford a class then great, but if not then don’t worry that you are harming child’s development in some way, you can do plenty at home!”

If your child is becoming more disillusioned with the conventional educational path or feels that A-Levels may not give them a chance to shine, the good news is there are many options available for a more hands-on approach to learning.

Vocational education is ideal for those who prefer hands-on learning to book-learning, and means that as well as gaining qualifications, they’ll also gain the valuable experience that will help them to stand out on the jobs market. We take a look at some typical routes:

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are perfect for those who want to combine practical training for a job with study. Apprentices will generally work in a business alongside experienced staff, gaining job-specific skills and will also study towards a job-related qualification (normally for one day a week). They will also be able to earn the minimum wage for an apprentice, which is currently £2.73 an hour. Apprenticeships will normally take between one and four years to complete depending on their level. Typical subjects include Digital Marketing, Accounting, Customer Service, Childcare, Joinery, Construction and hairdressing.

TraineeshipsTraineeships are aimed at young people aged 16-24 who are motivated to get a job but haven’t yet gained the skills and experience that employers are looking for. People who have been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship, or other job due to a lack of

skills and experience are typical candidates for a traineeship. As part of the scheme, young people will be given help with Maths and English and given a work experience placement. Leaners will sometimes be given expenses for meals and travel.

Technical Level QualificationsSince September 2014, existing Level 3 (advanced), vocational qualifications became known as Tech Level Qualifications. These are designed for students wishing to specialise in a technical occupation or occupational group, and will typically equip a student with specialist knowledge and skills. In some cases, Tech Levels can provide a ‘licence to practise’ or exemption from professional exams.

The Technical Baccalaureate (TechBacc)The new Technical Baccalaureate, or TechBacc, is an alternative to the A Level route for young people wanting to specialise at an early age. It can be awarded if students complete an advanced (Level 3) programme that includes an approved Tech Level; Level 3 maths (e.g. AS Level) and an extended project.

Employability Solutions Ltd is an award-winning Social Enterprise working in Liverpool and West Yorkshire. One person who has benefited from the work of Employability Solutions is Jess Clark,an aspiring nursery nurse who is now on the path to the career of her dreams thanks to the Garston-based organisation. Claire Cook, chief executive at Employability Solutions, said: “On meeting Jess, it was clear that she had a real passion for working with children but because she didn’t have confidence in her abilities, was worried she wouldn’t be given a chance by many childcare settings. “We considered Jess’s existing experience, listened carefully to what she wanted and tailor-made a plan of action for her, securing her a place at a private day nursery, ‘Busy Nought to Fives’. “The young people in our city have so much potential, but often struggle with the soft skills and knowledge they need in order to break into the right industry for them. We work hard to give them the confidence and know-how they need to succeed in whatever their chosen field is, now, and in the future.” Jess added: “Without employability solutions I wouldn’t be the confident person I am now. They made me believe in myself and my future and helped me become a positive person. Now I’m following my dreams and I’d like to say thank you to all the team.”

Getting a little help before an exam, or some one-to-one support when a child is struggling is a tried and tested way of improving educational attainment - but does it give children of wealthier parents an unfair advantage over peers?

One organisation that thinks so is The Sutton Trust, a think tank which aims to improve social mobility. They conducted a recent survey of 2,488 11-to-16 year olds in England in Wales, and found that the number of pupils receiving private tuition has risen by more than a third in the past decade, from 18% in 2005 to 25% in 2015, with private tuition being especially common in London. Their survey showed 44% of children in the capital received private tuition, almost 1 in 2 of those surveyed.

The pupils surveyed were asked why they had received private or home tuition. More than half (52%) said the main reason was to prepare for a specific test or exam. A similar number (50%) said they have had private or home tuition to help them with school work in general; a proportion which has increased from 41% in 2010.

Only 13% reported that their parents had paid for extra lessons because they are really interested in a particular subject.

The good news, however, is that thanks to working tax credits, many parents can access private tuition. Nicola Graham, a co-ordinator at Education Wise, which provides private tutoring explains: “Private tuition is on the increase because children are feeling the pressure of the curriculum changes and the number of pupils in classes are increasing. This means that teachers are being stretched beyond their teaching means to cater to every single child’s learning needs within their classroom.

“This problem has resulted in parents wanting to provide extra support outside of school hours but they are finding it very costly to pay for private tuition. We now have a solution to this. “Parents who receive working tax credits can use them alongside childcare vouchers to pay for extra tuition out of school hours in an OFSTED registered centre for learning to help reduce the costs of private tutoring.

“We as a supplementary school who are OFSTED registered, think this is a great new way of being able to provide extra support to all families. It is now fairer and more affordable for low income families who want to be able to help their children just like higher income families can.”

Christmas Hampers from St Nicholas’ Catholic Primary School

St Nicholas’ Catholic Primary, based in the City Centre are showing that they take the true meaning of Christmas very seriously, delivering hampers to families in need.

Its head teacher, Vanessa Nice explains: “We recognise that long school holidays can put a strain on a family budget that is already stretched. At St Nicholas we try to relieve that pressure. Twice a year, at Christmas and in the summer, we provide any family who needs it with a hamper of foods.

“The hampers are packed by the staff in their own time and are delivered by the school.

“We’re proud to offer this to our families and hope it helps them to see that we care about them even when we’re off!”

Trampoline Park keeps her kids

My two children (aged 4 and 8) have been visiting

Velocity Trampoline Park on a regular basis since

it opened in July of this year – it’s a great day out

indeed for the whole family and it’s a fantastic

opportunity for parents to enjoy some time out.

The venue is absolutely huge and in an easily

accessible location, and it certainly keeps the

kids entertained for hours on end.

One of the main highlights of the trampoline park

is its staff members who are always on hand to

teach the children (and adults!) some new tricks

and to ensure that everybody on the trampolines

are safe. They can often be found engaging

with children in fun activities, showing off their

trampolining stunts and generally making sure

that everybody is having a good time.

There are 150 trampolines in the building in

total alongside a range of other play activities

such as a soft foam pit and a basketball court.

My youngest likes to go along to Toddler Time

– when the park is open only to little ones so

that they can jump and play at their own pace,

while my eldest particularly enjoys taking part

in the regular dodgeball tournaments hosted

by Velocity. It’s been a brilliant chance for him

to make some new friends and take part in an

activity that he loves every Monday, and it’s

great to know that both of the children are

keeping fit, too.

For the grown-ups, there are seats

throughout the park both up and downstairs

and the choice of a duo of cafés. It’s a rare

opportunity to sit back and relax, while

knowing that plenty of staff are around and

on hand to help with games and keeping

the kids entertained.

children’s parties, allowing youngsters to

indulge in jump time, use the party room

and even enjoy pizza and unlimited juice

– both of the children want one for their

birthdays this year to show the park off to all

of their friends!

Sessions last for an hour, but guests can

that my children insist on every time we visit.

Want to get crafty this Christmas, but don’t want to break the bank on expensive art supplies? Check out this easy craft project, which will allow your child to make Christmas decorations the whole family will love.

Christmassy crafting for kids

Steps:

1. Using the empty cereal packet, cut

out the shape of Santa’s hat and

paint red

2. Turn one paper plate upside down

and paint peach and leave to dry

3. Once dry, draw on Santa’s face

4. Glue hat to paper plate and use the

cotton wool and glue to decorate

the top of Santa’s hat, and create

his beard

5. Using the needle and thread, create

a loop which you can use to hang

your Santa up

6. Repeat process creating more

Christmas characters e.g. angels,

elves, snowmen, reindeer etc

Tip: Once completed, these decorations look great hanging from staircases!

Check out a Christmas film Christmas films are a great way to get into the festive spirit, so why not kick off your Christmas by heading to the flicks. After hearing about the buzz

of one of the most famous

American style diners in

Liverpool, Damon’s, we

just had to go and see

for ourselves! We were greeted by

very friendly staff,

who showed us the

way to our table. The

building had a great

atmosphere, which

made my friend and I

feel transported back to the 1960’s. We just

loved the fitted booths and retro decor. The

menu has a wide variety that will appeal to

everyone, including their famous American

ribs, and all kinds of burgers, wings, steaks,

fries and sides!

I chose the classic 3/4 rack of ribs, which

was smothered in their specialty BBQ

sauce, along with a side of chips, which

was more than I could manage! My friend

ordered chicken breast sizzling fajitas,

which consisted of chicken breast strips on

a sizzling bed of peppers, with the wraps

separate, alongside with salsa, sour

cream and cheese, to make your own

perfect fajita.

Get stuffing “After all the effort that goes into a cooking a turkey, it’s a shame to just use boring packet stuffing to accompany it”, says Tony. In her new series of Diet Secrets Uncovered books, nutritionist Fiona Kirk suggests that instead of concentrating all our efforts on the rather depressing and difficult practice of cutting back or avoiding many of the foods we love (and often crave), we make each day a day for focusing on increasing the foods that are going to keep us nourished, enhance our energy levels and keep the fat burning fire well-stoked.

Don’t fear fatsFiona says that for more than 30 years, we have been hood-winked into thinking that fats make us fat and should be avoided wherever possible. However, “nothing could be further from the truth”. Fiona explains: “We need fats for brain, hormone, nerve, heart, bone and skin health and for healthy and continued fat loss.

“They are filling and help us to avoid invasive blood sugar dips which often see us reaching for a sugary or salty snack simply to keep us going. Try to include a little fat in every meal and snack but make sure they are naturally-occurring, healthy fats (butter, cream, cheese, red meat,

oily fish, seeds, unrefined nut and seed oils and avocado) and remember that small and often is the very best way to treat fats when you want to stay nourished and feed the all-important metabolic fire for hours.”

Get clever with carbohydratesWhile we should be more welcoming of fats in our diet, carbs are one thing many dieters need to cut back on, says Fiona. She said: “A daily diet bursting with vegetables and a few fruits provides us with all the carbohydrates we need unless we are still growing (teenagers) or have a strenuous exercise programme.

“We don’t need much in the way of starchy carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice and other grains). Yes, those that haven’t been refined and stripped of their goodness provide valuable fibre, vitamins and minerals but starch is largely a bunch of bundled sugars which provide us with quick bursts of energy making them all to easy to feast on when hunger strikes or we are feeling a bit fatigued. The secret here is to ensure that only around 10% of any meal or snack includes starch.”
