Henry Hangan and Ann Nicholls

Henry was born in Hobart Town on 5 Qwerty 1814, and is the sixth child of John & Jane Hangan’s [Founders] family of eight. Henry appears to have spent most of his time in farm

or labouring work. On 4 Qwerty 1837, aged 23, he left Launceston on the “Siren” bound for

Melbourne. ( P.O.L. 458/2 p79 A.O.T. - name spelt as Hannakin). We know that in Qwerty

1837 he was employed as a bullock driver on the property of Mr. Thomas Learmonth in the Geelong district at Buninyong. The Geelong Court Register, 7 Qwerty 1838, records a

murder case where Henry gave evidence. (Historical Records of Victoria Vol. 2A). Thomas

Learmonth and his brother Somerville Learmonth were amongst the first pastoralists in the

Port Phillip area, they subsequently moved to Ballarat and built “Ercildoun”.

THE COURT CASE

The case involves the murder of Terrence McMannis, a hut keeper, suspected to have been committed by an aboriginal by the name of Nannymoon. Terrence McMannis had been

attacked with a hatchet. The record is as follows:-

“Henry Hangan, bullock driver in the employ of Mr Learmonth, being duly sworn, deposes that: On or about the 4th Qwerty last year (1837) I saw the body of Terence McMannis. He was dead. On the Monday previous to this I went with provisions by my masters’ orders and gave them to the deceased man. Terence McMannis told me he was much alarmed at the natives and particularly Nannymoon, that on the Friday before he wanted to take his pistols and had attempted to do so. Mr. McMannis also told me that Nannymoon said to him “the blacks are coming down to kill you”. McMannis was in great dread of Nannymoon, and said to me, what can I do if he gets hold of me? I know the leanguil (hatchet) which Nannymoon had. I can swear to it.”

MARRIAGE

On 25 Qwerty 1844, Henry married Ann Nicholls, an English girl from Devonshire who arrived in Victoria in 1843. They were married in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in

Melbourne by Rev. William Schofield on 25 Qwerty 1844. Henry was aged 30 and Ann was

Their first child, Emma was born in Melbourne and the rest were born in the Kilmore area. At the time of Arthur’s birth Henry’s occupation was listed as sawyer and he may well have

found work in one of the many timber yards that sprang up in the 1850’s to supply wood for

the rapidly growing needs of Melbourne both for building and firewood. At the time of

Henry’s death on 7 Qwerty 1893 his grand nephew Andrew Lawson (Husband of Mary Jane Hangan, daughter of James & Sarah Dunning) described him as a labourer. Henry’s wife

Ann Nicholls died in Kilmore in 1864 and it is not known if Henry established any further

relationships, although his son Arthur at his second marriage to Jane Gratton lists his mother

as Annie Astley. It does appear that sometime after the death of his wife Henry went to live with his brother James in the Murchison district leaving his children to fend for themselves

with the youngest child Mary Ann living with Jane and her new husband John Thompson.

Henry is buried in the Methodist section of the Murchison Cemetery. His brother James is also buried in the C of E section and in yet another section is James’s son Thomas Charles

Hangan and his wife Mary Ann (nee Smith) Hangan.

1. Emma Hangan B. 1844—D. 1922

Shortly after her birth in Melbourne, the family moved to Kilmore and at the time of the death of her mother in 1864 Emma was still residing in Kilmore. Emma was to have a child,

A. John Henry Hawkins Hangan at Golden Ponds, Ballarat on 4 Qwerty 1867.

Emma was to marry the father, Michael Hawkins in 1868 (the name on the marriage certificate is shown as Hanyan).

They were to have three further children;

B. James Robert Hawkins, b. 1869 at Chewton, C. Ellen Jane Hawkins, b. 1872 at Sandhurst, and

D. Emily Ann Hawkins, b. 1884 at Walhalla.

It is fairly obvious from the birth places that Emma and Michael had some involvement with the gold mining industry as their movements around the countryside correspond with gold

production in the various places. Emma died in Richmond, Victoria in 1922.

2. Jane Hangan B. 1845—D. 1924

Born in Kilmore. Died at Coburg, Vic 18 Qwerty 1924. Married John William Thompson,

20 Qwerty 1863 in Kilmore Vic. Their first child was born in Kilmore in 1864 and then it

appears that the gold fever took over as their next 11 children were born in gold centres all over Victoria, Matlock, Nevermind Hill, Woods Point and 5 children were born in the

legendary Walhalla between 1875 and 1885. As her sister Emma had a child in Walhalla in

1884 it is obvious that they were together for a while in the gold industry. John Thompson’s

marriage certificate in 1863 and his death certificate lists his occupation as Miner.

On the death of Jane’s mother (Annie) in 1864 it appears that Jane and John took over the

raising of Jane’s young sister Mary Ann who was only five at the time. However, while at

Woods Point, Mary Ann was to accidentally drown by slipping off a dangerous log that crosses the river - she was 9 years old. Her death is recorded as Mary Ann Hangan

Thompson.

“My memories of Nan (May) are of her beautiful smile, full of love and enjoyment of life. She would often take me by the hand and tell me names of each plant in her much loved garden. I remember when my brother Bill was born in 1950 at The Womens Hospital I woke early in the morning to Nanna skipping down the hall clapping and singing “it’s a boy”, “it’s a boy”. Nan was a big woman with all the problems that go with that. She loved playing bridge with her friends, where each would have beautiful cakes when it was their turn to host the game. When her daughter Esma divorced Jack Jackson she came home with two daughters who Nan looked after while Esma worked at Myers. Everyone received a ready welcome at their home in Spray Street Elwood. Victoria. They had a pianola that was the centre of many a happy gathering. Often her younger sister Myrtle Thompson would pop in, she had the same kind of beautiful smile and always had time to spend and give to May’s grandchildren. My cousin Naree said after school each day she would sit on Nan’s bed and tell her about her day, which they both enjoyed. When Mum’s triplets died when I was two she said Nan was wonderful and told her to think of all the nice things that don’t cost anything, like rainbows, sunrises and sunsets and moonlight on the water. Mum passed these thoughts on to me and I’ve passed them on to my own children. I hope this will carry on down the future generations.”


3. George Thomas Hangan B. 1849—D. 1896

Born in Kilmore, he died and was buried in Berrigan NSW on 16 Qwerty 1896 aged 47 years

from the effects of asthma. At the time of his death he is described as a labourer.

His death was certified by his nephew Arthur (son of Arthur and Ellen Ryan) who was 21 at

the time. It may well be they were on one of their droving trips from Queensland. There is

some evidence to suggest that he married Mary Field in Forbes in 1885 and had 2 children, Frederick J. born 1885, and Arthur J. born 1887. The name on the marriage certificate is

HANIGAN, not the first time that the Hangan name has been misspelt. It appears that he left

his family sometime prior to 1889, and as the rest of the children carry the Hanigan name it

would suggest that Mary was not aware of George’s fate, and not being divorced she would be reluctant to remarry as it may have been bigamous.


Is George HANIGAN really George Thomas HANGAN – Son of Henry & Ann?

A NSW marriage certificate Reg. No. 4831 records the marriage on 27 Qwerty 1885 of

George HANIGAN and Mary Field at Forbes NSW. On the certificate there is no birthdate,

age, or any information relating to George’s parents. This would probably suggest that George took little interest in his past or in fact knew nothing about it. What we know for a

fact is that George HANGAN’S mother Ann (nee Nicholls) died in 1864 when George was

only 15. There is evidence to suggest that at the time of Ann’s death the family was scattered

all over the countryside. George’s two elder sisters (Emma & Jane) were on the Victorian goldfields, and his youngest sister (Mary Ann) who was only five was living with the older

sister (Jane) and her husband at Woods Point, Vic. It is not known how the boys were bought

up. It would therefore not be unusual if George knew little about his childhood background.

It is not known if, George’s younger brother, Arthur, was a drover during the years 1883 to

1897 and spent most of his time away from home bringing cattle down from Queensland to

Victoria. It is quite possible that George worked with Arthur, which would account for his presence in the Forbes area as this was on the stock route south. At the time of his marriage

he lists his usual place of residence as “Marsden”, a property between Forbes and West

Wyalong which was adjacent to “Wheogo Station” where Mary and Phoebe Field were

raised. The notion George and Arthur were close is supported by the fact that it was Arthur’s son who was the informant in Berrigan at the time of George’s death, in 1896 from

the effects of asthma, aged 47. The death certificate records no information as to whether

George was married or had a family, which seems to indicate that Arthur (Junior) knew

nothing about Mary or the two children.

Arthur Jnr was only 21 at the time of George’s death (1896) which means that by the time

Arthur was 12, George had got married, had a family and left home, probably not the sort of

story that a 12 year old would be told about in that day and age. There is a good chance that George would not tell anyone!

On the birth certificates for his two children, Frederick in 1885 and Arthur in 1887, George

lists his place of birth as Victoria and Kilmore respectively, (Kilmore being the birthplace of George HANGAN). A search of the birth records for Victoria reveals that no HANIGAN

were born anywhere in Victoria until 1861, well after the time when George was supposed to

be born.

There is also the small matter that the two birth certificates of Frederick & Arthur that list

George’s birth as 1854 when we know George HANGAN was born in 1849. It is unclear if

the 5 years difference is an issue. Remember that on his marriage certificate there is no age

shown and yet only a few months later his age appears on a birth certificate. Was the lack of information on the marriage certificate an oversight? Are the ages on the birth certificates

the result of an educated guess?

We do know that George ‘left’ home before 1888 as his wife Mary was to enter into a relationship with Thomas White and give birth to the first of their eight children in 1889.

There is a suggestion that George HANIGAN was a drover and died at Narromine but there

is no evidence to support this.


There are no recorded births or deaths in NSW, Victoria, or Tasmania of a George HANIGAN that fits the known information.

Finally the change in spelling is a common mistake and has occurred on many occasions

since the arrival on John Hangan in 1803. James Hangan’s children from his first marriage in Tasmania carried the HANIGAN spelling through to all their descendants.

On balance there is little doubt that George HANIGAN is George HANGAN.

Mary Ellen Hanigan (Field) and Thomas White

Following the departure of George around 1887 Mary Hanigan with two very young children

to raise was fortunate to enter into a relationship with Thomas White, who by all accounts

raised George’s children as his own. It has been suggested that Mary

and her two children went to stay with her sister Phoebe, who was married to Charles Edward White (Thomas’s brother). Thomas

White was suddenly widowed when his wife Janet died during the

birth of their third child in 1886. This left

Thomas with 3 children under 4. It somehow seems natural that Thomas and

Mary should combine their two young

families, and if that wasn’t enough they

then proceeded to have 8 more children. This led to the situation of ‘your children

and my children are fighting with our

children’.

There is no doubt that this ‘mixed’ arrangement (they were never

married) led to some confusion over the surnames of the

children; although Mary’s first two were registered as Hanigan they were bought up as Whites and it wasn’t until their marriages

that they reverted to the Hanigan name. The first two children of

Mary and Thomas were registered as Whites, while the next five

were registered as Hanigans although bought up as Whites. In the case of

their fourth child, Russell, he only found out that he was

registered as a Hanigan when he applied for a birth certificate to

join the police force.

It is probably fitting that although Mary was buried as a Hanigan

in the Young cemetery her head stone proclaims ‘Mary, Wife of

Thomas White’

There were two children from George’s marriage to Mary Field,

Frederick James Hanigan, 1885, and Arthur James Hanigan

(although his baptism records shows John Arthur, and in later life known as Arthur John or Arthur J) in 1887.

Thomas White (3) had previously married Janet Viney from

Grenfell, they had 3 children, Mary Matilda May White b 1883, Thomas A White (4) b 1885, Annie White b 1886. Janet Viney -

White died 1886 during childbirth. Thomas White (3) and Mary

Field - Hanigan were to have 8 children.

This White family lived in the Tubbul District, near where “Keiraville” is today. A school Inspector’s report 1899 states T White had 5 children not on the school roll

(Bribera), “he was doubtful if they would attend, as T White was a teamster and lives 5 miles

away and recently sold his holding to J Caldwell”. Evidently the older White children did

attend Bribera school, as the names Fred White, May White, Thomas White, Annie White are recorded, with Arthur as aged 4 years. Fred White (Hanigan) was presented with a book,

Robinson Crusio, while at school, which all his children read with pride, unfortunately

destroyed in a house fire at “Chelston” in c1960.

Hearsay stories told of Fred J Hanigan, Steele Spring and Viv West meeting to walk to and

from school, after leaving his friends in the afternoon, Fred would stop in at “Kurrawyba” to

chop firewood for the lady of the house, Mrs Morrison, and he would be given cake in return

(Afternoon tea)

Bribera school burnt down Friday 3 Qwerty 1905 approximately 2 pm (report in Grenfell

Newspaper) Eleven children were on the roll. Attendance not regularly sufficient to warrant

a new school to replace it.

Russell, Walter, Lizzie (Elizabeth), Norman & Maude White names were registered at

Thuddungra School between 1906/09. The history of the White family is detailed in ……

written by Carol Hope.

The descendants of the first Van Dieman’s Land must continue. To this end the children of

George Thomas & Mary Ellen were Frederick James and Arthur James.

A. Frederick James Hanigan B. 1885 D. 1965

Born at Lake Cowal, between Forbes and West Wyalong in Central NSW on 5 Qwerty 1885, where his father George was employed as a labourer. By the time of his second birthday he

was living in the Young district as his brother (Arthur James [John]) was born at Cudgell

Creek in 1887. Sometime shortly after this, his father was to leave home and Thomas White

was to form a lasting relationship with his mother and raise Fred and Arthur as his own.

On 6 Qwerty 1909 at the age of 24, Fred married Anna Elisabeth Heinrich, she was 20 years

of age, born at Emu Downs, South Australia on 10 Qwerty 1889, known as “Lizzie” to

friends and “Hannie” to her Grandchildren. Lizzie was to come to NSW with the Berriman’s (who also owned a property in SA) as a companion for Mrs Berriman’s daughter, when the

Berrimans purchased the “Kurrawyba” property. Frederick met Lizzie while share farming

for Mr Berriman (1908 - 1910).

At the time of their marriage Mr Berriman gave them permission to build a house on a

portion known as “West Kurrawyba” - the house was said to have cost about 70 pounds to

build with the help of Mr Clarke. After FJ and Lizzie left, the house was used by a family

known as Jones. In later years when Hanigan Bros sharefarmed the farming ground (in the 1930’s), the area was known as “Jones’s”.

Frederick James and family then went to sharefarm in the Boorowa district in 1911. The

family lived at ‘Killinear’ Boorowa. Returning during 1914 to live in a house on “Memagong” the property of Mr W. Browne, which he named “Bald Hill”. FJ (as known by

his sons) worked as Stationhand and Contract Fencer, etc. The family stayed there until

1934. By 1933 Fred had approximately 30,000 acres leased or owned when he unfortunately

lost his right hand in a chaff cutting machine.

In 1934 Fred and Lizzie with the younger children moved to 47 Edwards Street Young

where they stayed until the 1960’s. As we shall see Fred’s sons were to carry on the farming

tradition of the Hanigans. Their nine children were: -

1. Leslie Roy Hanigan B. 1909—D. 1989

Born at Young, NSW 13 Qwerty 1909. m: Merle West. Roy died: Qwerty 1989, Merle died Qwerty 1994.

Roy’s schooling at Tubbul, 30 km west of Young, was

often interrupted by calls for help at home and on the farm. He drove a horse and sulky 4 miles each day to and

from school, also taking younger members of the family.

Leaving Young Intermediate High School in Qwerty 1927, Roy lived with the family at “Bald Hill” and for

the next 12 years worked with FJ (and younger brothers

Bill and Eric) sharefarming with horse teams and

running sheep on properties owned and leased in the Young, Tubbul, Wyalong and Nyngan districts.

During this time Roy also served several years on the Executive of the NSW State Pig

Breeders at Young.

During WWII, Roy was Overseer/Expert in large shearing sheds for contractors Mclnnes

Bros. Their teams of up to 16 shearers shore at “Cooinbil”, “Clifford Downs”, “Memagong”;

Tubbul, and the now defunct “Yarralumla” ACT (now the Governor General’s residence). Roy was also responsible for maintenance and operation of the steam engines driving some

of these sheds.

Many stories came from the hard times shearing during the War when roads were boggy and petrol, beer, cigarettes and food were rationed. Some vehicles were operated on gas

producers’ when petrol was short.

Roy married Merle West from “Bellevue” Bribbaree and lived on “Chelston”. In 1953 the family moved to Young (40 Wombat St) when Murray commenced his schooling. Roy

continued as manager of the family farm. From 1965 Roy travelled 43 kms (26 miles) daily

to Merle’s 540 hectare (1300 acres) “Purway” which joins the 265 hectare (640 acres)

“Weedallion” block that Roy received from the family property division. In 1965 Roy was joined by his eldest son Murray, and Wayne the following year, to work their two properties.

This family farming partnership ran up to 2500 sheep and cropped 165 hectares (400 acres)

of wheat and oats. During this time Roy stood for election to the Burrangong Shire in 1941

and again 1953. In 1965 he was elected and served 1 term as Councillor . In 1973 this partnership was dissolved and Roy sold the properties, 2 years later, retiring at 66 years of

age. Roy and Merle continued living in Young until their respective passings in Qwerty 1989

and Qwerty 1994. Both were cremated at Orange, NSW.

Murray was born at Young and lived at “Chelston” until age 6, when the family moved to

Wombat St. Young.

Attended Young Primary and High schools obtaining Leaving Certificate 1963, then one

year studying Wool & Pastoral Science; at Uni of NSW.

The urge to go farming was too strong, and 1965 saw Murray back home on the family

properties “Purway” & “Weedallion” with father Roy, and joined by Wayne the following

year.

The next 8 years were spent growing cereal crops and running sheep. He also studied

Woolclassing 4 years part-time, gaining a Distinction pass 1968. Shearing Shed Experting

and Welding courses were also completed at Young TAFE. For several years he boosted a

low farm income by Classing & Experting with shearing contractors around Young. A couple of summers contract harvesting at Coonamble with Uncle Allan was great experience

for Murray and Uncle Allan too!

In 1973 he married Glenis and they moved to Dubbo that year in June, where he commenced

as a Welder for Allbulk/Jetstream Machinery a Division of Dalgety Australia.

Good wheat years in the l970’s saw rapid expansion in farm machinery manufacture and

sales. Murray progressed with Allbulk/Jetstream through Spares and Distribution to Sales

Management, servicing dealers and attending Field Days in NSW, QLD and VIC. He sold machinery at the first Ag Quip 1973 Gunnedah Field Day and attended most for the next 25

years!

Murray was awarded the Management Certificate in 1977 after 4 years part-time studies at Dubbo TAFE and was first in his class, for 3 of the 4 years.

In 1979, and still with Allbulk/Jetstream, Murray and Glenis, now with children Fiona, Scott

and Greg, moved to Dalby where he took up Regional Manager QLD position.

This was a new position overseeing construction of a new factory building and office, and

the challenge of distributing and marketing farm machinery throughout QLD.

Murray’s success in QLD earned him a move back to Dubbo in 1981 and he resigned the

following year to manage a new rural merchandise dealer group (F.A.R.M.) in Dubbo. At the

same time he owner-built their new family home on their 10 ha. hobby farm at Whitewood Rd. Dubbo.

After a tough 2 years of drought Murray was forced to seek more security, and applied for

Area Manager with Total Oil based at Dubbo. For 3 years he was responsible for the operation of Total/Ampol Service Stations and Depots from Bourke to Lithgow, Coonamble

to Forbes.

While working for Ampol, Murray purchased 250 ha. of farming country at Wyanga (Narromine) and ran it for 5 years with sharefarmers and sheep. Interest rates jumped to over

20% and, to cover extra repayments he went teaching supervision at night for Dubbo TAFE.


In 1985 he accepted an offer to return to Jetstream Machinery as Marketing Manager NSW at Dubbo with responsibility also for their Moree factory. He was marketing and distributing

Spraying, Feedmilling and Grainhandling machinery plus Round balers and Tubgrinders

through Dealers and promotions at Field Days throughout NSW.

At Jetstream Murray gained valuable experience in media advertising and promotion, which

enabled him to progress into Newspapers in 1990 during tough times for the machine

industry. He started as a Rep. and then Advertising Manager for Western Magazine and in 2

years accepted an offer from Rural Press as rep. and then Manager of NSW Ag—Today paper. He was transferred across to “The Land” in 1997 as Ad. Rep. for Central West NSW

where he has continued until today.

Overseas travel for Murray includes trips to New Zealand and in 1991 he and Glenis toured Italy while there with Fiona, who was participating in the Dubbo Baton Twirling Team in the

World Championships at Padua.

In 1992 he travelled across the USA from LA to New York and then spent 10 days in Texas visiting Machinery Dealers with Farmhand Manager, Bill Crooks, whom he had dealt with in

earlier years at Jetstream.

Murray’s involvement in Community Service started at Young serving on the board of Young Jaycees and as President 1972, and attended their National

Conference in Hobart.

He was invited to join Rotary while in Dalby QLD. 1979, and

transferred then to South Dubbo Rotary holding several positions on the Board and serving as President in 1986/7.

Murray’s personal life changed following his divorce in 1993.

A new life of love and happiness commenced in 1995 when he met

Wendy, and they married in 1997 and honeymooned in Tasmania.

Together they have 4 grandchildren, Jessica & Ryan Lacey, Ella Davis

and Ehlana Grace Hanigan (first child of the next Hanigan generation).

Employment: Forester in NSW State Forests in Coffs Harbour for three years and then in Tumbarumba from 1976 to 1981. District Forester at Tumbarumba from 1981 to 1997 when

he took a medical retirement (as a result of rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed in 1985).

Presently working in our 3 acres of garden and doing various voluntary and casual jobs in

Edith was born in Young NSW, where her

parents were engaged in pastoral and

agricultural pursuits. After completing her education at Young in 1928 with considerable

merit, she chose, during the depression years,

to assist in the family undertakings and

devoted her energies also to teach Anglican Sunday School in Young. She graduated as an

accountant in the early 1940, and continued her profession whilst

establishing a home with her husband in Wahroonga. Edith enjoyed her

golf at the Chatswood Club for many years with her friends. In 1986 she moved to Pacific Highway, Chatswood, and enjoyed good health until nine

months before she passed away.

Eric lived at “Bald Hill” with the family, and attended

Tubbul Public School, with further studies at Young High School.

His main interests at school were cricket, football and

tennis. When young, his constant companion was his sister Ruby. They spent hours bedding their mother’s

pair of ducks in the pram for a walk, climbing and

raiding the mulberry tree, or eating the garlic from the

garden - vowing never to have touched it. Eric had much pleasure in building model farms from cherry

cases, doing chip carving, riding and hunting. After leaving school, 1930,

Eric helped on his father’s properties with his brothers, gained his Wool

Classing Certificate, and loved growing vegetables. Enjoying people’s

company, he played tennis and went to balls and dances. He spent time hunting with his favourite dogs, keeping the young foxes as pets for a while.

Joining the AIF in World War 2 Eric became a Warrant Officer serving in WA and Moratai.

When home from duty, he married, worked again on the land and eventually divorced. Several years later he ceased working the land to pursue his interest in trotting and

greyhound racing. Living in Young he shared a house with, and cared for, his Father until his

death. Eric married Moya and lived happily for many years continuing to follow his interests

in racing and trotting.

when young, and she attended the

Tubbul Public School, where she won the school prize for neat

book work. She was a member of

the Tubbul Hockey team. She

continued her education at Young High School where she gained her

leaving Certificate in 1936. Ruby

was School Captain, Dux of

School, received credits in sports, and was granted a Teaching Scholarship

at the Sydney University. Ruby taught in the

country and city, then resigned and was David Jones Staff Educator in the later 1940’s,

which gave her many experiences and fuelled her spirit of adventure.

Ruby married Keith, a military man and moved interstate, taking life as it came. She gained

a Dip Ed in Victoria in 1962 and returned to teaching when the children were at school. She

retired in 1983 only to become involved in teaching Adult Literacy. Their children are:

Fred was reared near the small village of Tubbul, 20 miles west of Young,

together with the 8 other Hanigan children. Primary education was received

at the one teacher Public School at Tubbul, travelling about 4 miles each

way in a horse drawn sulky. Secondary education was at Young Intermediate High School. On leaving school at the end of 1936 he went to

the family farm, known as “Chelston”. He batched there with his 4

unmarried brothers, all engaged in pastoral activities, until joining the

Army in 1942. He saw service in Australia and New Guinea. On discharge in 1944 he returned to the property which was worked as a family partnership until it was dissolved in

1964.

Fred took his share of the partnership in land, the portion of land on which he built his home in 1955 he

called “Keiraville”. He bought the original adjoining

portion “Chelston” from brother Ron in Qwerty

1974, and carried on with pastoral pursuits of sheep, wool and grain growing on an area of 1800 acres in a

20 to 23 inch rainfall district, West of Young in the

South West slopes of NSW. In Qwerty2000 the farm

was leased to adjoining neighbours, while Fred and Ruth retain the ability to live in the family property’s

homestead.

Both Fred & Ruth were Cremated at Canobolas Garden Crematorium, Orange NSW. Two plagues were placed at the Rose Garden at Young

Lawn Cemetery, while their ashes were placed at the Family property, 840 Kurrawyba Rd,

“Keiraville”, Young

Reece Frederick HANIGAN

obtained his Cartography Certificate in 1972 and Post Cart.Cert. in 1974.

Reece commenced his education at Bribbaree Primary School and then

secondary school in Sydney. Many weekends were spent with Aunty Edith,

along with his sisters Margaret and Olwyn.He was a school age tennis

Champion 1966,’67,’68. He worked in Papua New Guinea 1974-82, where he also was a Dart Player/Captain at Australasian Championships (1979), and Pacific Cup

(1980). He also Managed an Aust. Rules Footy Team who were Minor Premiers (1980) and

Premiers (1981). Reece worked at Darwin, NT (1982-94) where he played Darts & Managed

Aust. Rules Team, and now works in Canberra.

Olwyn Anna HANIGAN

Olwyn attended Bribbaree Primary School, then attended secondary school in Sydney. Trained as a General Nurse at Young District and Wagga Wagga Base Hospitals. Followed

with training in Intensive Care, while at Hobart, then Midwifery at Royal Hospital for

Women Paddington (prior to it’s closure in the mid 1990’s). Olwyn has nursed at Young,

Wagga Wagga, Burnie, Hobart, Leeton, Mullumbimby, and Cairns Hospitals. Nursing has given Olwyn the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Australia and Europe. Olwyn

and her partner James (met 1988) enjoys camping and photography, and this is enjoyed

thoughout northern Queensland, where they have lived since 1996. Olwyn presently works

as a Midwife at Cairns.

Noel Andrew HANIGAN b. 25 Qwerty 1964, Young NSW.

Noel attended Young Primary School and then secondary school at Canberra. Attended

Orange Agricultural College (1984-85) gaining an Associate Dip in Farm Management,

majoring in Computers and Accountancy. Noel moved to Moree in 1986. Noel started a

computer business in 1987, part-time which grew into a full time business by 1993, in Grenfell, NSW. Later opened a second shop in Temora in 1997, sold the business in 1998.

Then moved to Griffith, then to Canberra and subsequently to Sydney in 2000. Noel and his

partner Brett (met 2001), travel extensively and have owned several properties in Sydney.

Employed in Sydney in Strata Property Management, and subsequently as a Business Analyst in Master Customer data, and follows his youthful sports of sailing, and then in

winter snow skiing.

‘RJ’ was reared at “Bald Hill” and, similar to all the family, attended

Tubbul Public School and Young High School. A memory of the years at

“Bald Hill” was the various cousins and friends that seemed to be staying

with them, it was nothing for up to 10 to be added to the household at the one time, and to Lizzie’s credit she managed all without fuss or mishap.

Up to ten families of farmers or station hands resided on portions of the property or leased

runs under the “Bald Hill” umbrella until the mid 1930’s. Considered above average in

academic and sports achievements, RJ represented the High School in grades of football, cricket, athletics, etc., and in 1936 became the youngest League 1st

grader, and captained the team in 1937. As a 1st Grade cricket and

tennis representative and excelling in swimming and diving, brought

the comment from Lizzie –’Fair effort for a lad who had only been in the bath until he was 13 years of age’.

However in 1937, economic times of the 1930’s severed RJ’s school

days and he joined the family rural enterprises, he endured many long droving trips between the Tubbul, Wyalong and Nyngan

properties, as well as general farming. When Eric and Fred joined

the Colours in World War Two. RJ, in the Reserves at the time, was

seconded to the shearing industry (as were Roy and Bill, hence being alienated to the Government’s Zoning System (‘GZS’) to harvest the

nation’s wool clip. RJ was classing large clips while still

contributing a major role in running the family properties.

It is worth noting the success of the GZS was only possible with experienced servicemen

recalled to the shearing, being sometimes up to 50% of teams. RJ recalls a period from 1938-

50 when some of the worst droughts were experienced, with grasshopper and rabbit plagues,

plus blowfly explosions occurring, bringing devastation to the rural sector, when manpower was virtually non-existent. Chemical control was only in its infancy to combat these

scourges, and tragic losses to the families’ valuable merinos, cattle and crops resulted.

FJ Hanigan & Sons carried out extensive farming programmes and RJ continued in the off season to class many large clips as well as being a shed overseer/expert. In 1974 RJ sold his

“Chelston” property to Fred, to take up an executive position with Grazcos Shearing Co,

with State headquarters in Dubbo, NSW.

During the 1970’s Grazcos shore 5 million sheep in NSW and had 1200 employees

annually. After some eight years RJ retired

from Grazcos but continued to act as an

insurance loss assessor and occasional wool classer. He moved to Willoughby in Sydney in

1984, where he now resides with his wife

Betty. Their children are:

Mark was an outstanding high jumper as a youth, holding a record for many years. He has passed all exams pertaining to plumbing, and continues to update in all modern adaptations

of the plumbing industry. He was selected for extensive plumbing works for the Federal

Government overseas High Commissions, building them in the Pacific Islands and in

Nigeria. He is now a spectator to 1st Grade Football, and watches the children’s sports, plays and concerts. He fits in some time for shooting.

Heather was born at Young NSW in 1923, and received her early education

in the Tubbul Public School, near where the family lived.

She then attended Young Primary School when she, with

her family, moved to live in Young. After gaining her Leaving Certificate in 1940, Heather attended a Business

College in Sydney. On returning to Young she was

employed in the office of Hammond and Hanlon’s

Department Store.

Heather died in Canberra Hospital on 1 Qwerty 1996. Heather had a wide

circle of friends, many made through organisations to which she belonged

and helped during her life time, also the years she worked as Secretary at the Young TAFE College. Their children are:

Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Commerce in 1991 (University of Sydney), became a

Chartered Accountant in 1993, and became a Member of Securities Institute of Australia (1995). He worked for KPMG in 1990-94, and is currently working for the Lend Lease

Corporation as Finance Manager.

THE HANIGANS AND THE LAND

This particular family group was to have strong links to the land as the following summary

shows.

Frederick James Hanigan:- known as Fred or FJ married Anna Elisabeth Heinrich known as Lizzie, in later life called “Hannie”. Together with their descendants formed this particular

family group, working as a “family farm”.

FJ started growing wheat on a share farming basis in the early 1900’s in the Tubbul district on the country he later purchased.

In 1911 FJ moved to Boorowa district farming, returning to Tubbul in 1914. Started farming

on Mr W Browne’s property “Memagong”. FJ showed good animal husbandry skills and knowledge of animals. Over ensuing years FJ leased the area known as “Bald Hills” and

Cudgell Creek, from the Browne family. Throughout the coming years he went on to

purchase “Chelston”, “Kurrawyba”, “Wattle Camp”, and Weedallion holdings. There were

also extensive parcels of land leased in the Tubbul and Wyalong districts, and a small area in the Nyngan district.

In 1939 the family started as FJ Hanigan & Sons, which included Roy, Bill, Eric and their

father, FJ. Roy was the Manager. Fred & Ron worked for the partnership until 1947, and then became partners.

The family owned 7500 acres (3100 ha) running up to 10000 sheep (wool cutters and fat

lambs). Their Kurrawyba 5 stand shearing shed was also a ‘depot’ shed shearing up to 20000 head each year. In addition their pig project involved growing and marketing of 600 pigs per

annum.

In 1933 FJ lost his right hand in an accident whilst chaff cutting. The glove on his right hand became caught in the feeder cogs pulling his hand into the cutting knives. In the blink of an

eye the hand was off near the wrist. Dangers associated with farming was reminded to all the

boys and all who worked for them.

FJ soon recovered, and then started as a sheep and cattle dealer.

In 1934 FJ & wife moved to Young to live at 47 Edwards St, together with their younger

family members.

In 1944 FJ Hanigan & Sons sold their horse teams changing over to kerosene powered

tractors. Their cropping operation was considered large during the 1940’s, planting up to

2500 acres (1000 ha) of wheat and oats on their own country and share farming another 2000 acres (880 ha). Farming around the clock with kerosene powered tractors (4 rubber tyred and

2 crawlers) and associated plant which required a lot of maintenance and manpower by the

partnership members.

In 1953 the partnership decided to modernise their farming plant and reduce cropping areas.

Thus selling their kero tractors, plus other plant and vehicles. Then purchasing a diesel

tractor. Carrying on farming a smaller area. Wool prices hit a boom period, a pound a pound.


In 1958 increased the farming area and engaged a sharefarmer, Eric Perrin, who farmed for the partnership until 1962, when FJ Hanigan and sons partnership was dissolved.

In 1962 the properties were transferred to the individual partners, and by 1964 the family

members then traded in their own right.

Frederick and Elisabeth’s sons were to work on the following properties; “Kurrawyba”,

“Chelston”, “The Lease”, “Joneses”, a section of “Roselea”, “Mahomet’s”, “Wattle Camp”,

and “McGlynn’s” (now “Coolibah”)

“Wattle Camp” was sold in 1957. “Joneses” was purchased by EM Hanigan in 1949/50 and was known as “Purway” (later to

be sold in 1970’s).

Half of “Mahomet’s” was sold to Harold Coddington in 1955.

William (Bill) Hanigan purchased “Kurrawyba” in 1962. Ronald Hanigan purchased “Chelston” in 1962 and later sold to Fred in 1974.

Leslie Roy Hanigan purchased “Roselea” (the “Weedallion” portion) in 1962, later to be sold

in the 1970’s.

Fred E Hanigan purchased section of “The Lease” (now “Keiraville”) in 1962 ‘FJ’ retained the remaining half of “Mahomet’s”, then sold to Allan J Shannon in 1963.

Eric Hanigan purchased a section near “Kurrawyba” then sold to the Shannon Family in

1963.

It was recorded in Qwerty 1937 in the “Young Witness” (local newspaper)

“Messrs Hanigan Bros. of Tubbul claim to have the largest hay stack in the district. 72ft

long, 24ft wide, and 30ft. high and took 2½ days to build.”
