* ~ * * * * * * * * * * * * *' * ~ * *, * ~ • * * I have recently read that the National Archives has sufficient, documentation on local post.

office operations since the Civil War, and occaSionally some post offices find old records that· may be of historical interest. Did you know that your local postmaster now. has the aut.l1ority to request transfer of such postal records to local and state historical societies and libraries? I supp'Jse this would also include Genealogical Societies.

On AUgtls1:24-26. Arkansas was represented at a Seminar, sBDnsored by the Tennessee Genealogical Society at Memphis State University, by Mrs. T. H. Bowles and Mrs. Lois Jones, members of the staff of the Arkansas History Commission; Mrs. Bob Lavender of Texarkana; Mrs. Paul E. Francis, Mrs. ,J. E. Bryant, and "yours truly" of Hot Springs. Principal speakers were Dr. Jean Stephenson and Milton Rubincam of the National Genealogical SOCiety and jt: was a most enjoyable, as well as informative session. MARRIAGE· RECORDS OF CALHOUN. COUNTY, ARKANSAS

INDEX TO V.OLUME ·"A"

COMPILED BY: W1llma Humphrllys. Newton (Mrs. Lawrence Newton) Box 41 Hampton, Arkansas

COMPILER'S NOTE: With the exception of my son and a firstcousm once-removed who came with her husband and issue from Iowa, I have no relati"!lS in Arkansas. We all came to Arkansas after World War II. I am a Salt Water Cajun Gal· from South Louisiana, with a passel of damm-fine Yankee ancestors. However, the roots of my husband's family go deep into the early history of Calhoun County, beginning with his second. great grandfather, William Oliver, in the year 1845. William was born in Pendleton District,.' SC;lUth Carolina, during the Revolution, died in Calhoun County during the Civil War. We first made our acquaintance with this fascinating ancestor when we found his well-marked grave in an old field about ten years ago. Evel',JUne else brags about their lawyer, doctor, general, etc .. ancestors, but our William rode out of Alabama at the head of a posse! Just ahead! But far enough agead to get to Arkansas. That's another tale for another day, but it sent me straight into Great Grandfather's corner. I had been gathering tales of the Old Days inArkansas, and I studied the landrecords, and finally copied and indexed the marriage records through 1877. Then, with the help of friends, we copied every tombstone inscription in Calhoun County and some along its borders. My marriage records are on 3 x 5 cards, and I have correlated other information concerning the parties as I found it, and placed it on these cards.

In 1959 I began to write a column in our weekly newspaper, "The Calhoun Herald", titled ''1 Discover Calhoun County" and for four years printed ,stories about the early pioneers and their descendants. I could have written for 40 years without leaving the room--justfrom what I had collected. I have files on many families~-some of them back to the Revolutionary ancestor. Time is my task-master, and my chosen profession as aland title abstractor has to come first. While I am listed as a p'rofessional genealogist, it means more to me.to see some person made happy by finding a genealogical fact for which he is looking, than does a fee. With this in view, I offer the following index. I wish I could add the information on some. of the cards, but if I did, I could find time to write "that book";

Old James Harvey Means, late of St. Clair County, Ala. and sometime early Clerk of Calhoun County, wrote his capital "I's" and "j's" exactly alike:,. Please make allowance for this fact. OLA means "of legal age". .

by "

Lois Hodges Canfield Bismarck, Arkansas

The Bismarck Cemetery was established about 1830 by t.he burial of the infant son of John Magby, an early settler of the community.· Cedar trees guardthe oldest: section oft.he cemetery, but as years passed many graves, unmarked, have been lost .. Older tombstones, some nearly illegible, are gradually bowing to time;. thereforelhis record, as complete as possible, was compiled. Possibly others could add' names and dates.

by Mrs. Pat C. Herrington

The Moody Cemetery is locat.ed one mile southeast of Iuka, Baxter County, on land owned by Emmaline and Amos Moody, Sr. The exact date when the cemetery was started is not known, but before 186l.

During t.he War Between the States a company of Confederate Soldiers were camped at: a spring near Uncle Jimmy McNeill's home on the road from Iuka.to Pineville. A lieutenant: became ill and was left; in this home. He died and was buri.ed in this cemetery in 1862.

Many years later a rock wall was built around the family lots. In 1913 there was a ''work·· ing" of the cemetery. A ''working'' means a clearing of weeds. Wire for a fence was bought by J. W. Lackey, Andy and Bill Killian, and John Arnold, Sr. Frank Morrow and Mat Arnold helped build the fence. The first Memorial Service was held on the first Sunday in ,June, 1913, and was conducted by Rev. F. E. Hall, who was the minister for years; then Rev. Young Whitfield held services for many years.

The arbor was built in 1931 by the leadership of Dave Sanders and Virgil Killian. Frances Moody, granddaughter of Amos and Emmaline Moody, made a deed to the lot., free of cost, on July 13, 1940. The first member of the Moody family who was buried in the cemetery was Cletes Moody, infant son of John and Angie Moody in Nov., 1917.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSIONERS WHO'LJVED IN ARKANSAS

by

BROWN, William N. C. Service S 31563

Inez Raney Waldenmaier

(NOTE: William had a twin brother, Joseph, who was also a pensioner. They were the sons of John Brown, who was also a Revolutionary soldier. Joseph, the twin brother, in 1839 lived in Lincoln Co., Mo.)

William Brown, son of John Brown, was born in 1755:0,1756 in Bedford Co., Virginia. He enlisted (no date) at the town' of Jonesborough (now in Tennessee), from the District of Tennessee as a sergeant.

After the war he lived in Cocke Co., Tenn.; Oglethorpe Co., Ga.; and Lincoln Co. , Mo. He moved to Lincoln Co., Mo. about 1812, moving to ArkllnsasTerritory "to live with a son and have lately returned to Lincoln County io I'e side with Levi Brown,another son, who lives in this county." On May 19, 1832, while a resident of Lincoln Co., Mo., at age 7 8, he applied for a pension based on his military record.

At this time, 1832, an affidavit was given for him by Mary Thurman, born 1760. She testified that "in 1770 her father, Jonas Little, removed to within ten miles of Jonesborough, then in North Carolina ... " at which time William and Joseph Brown lived four miles away from the home of her father. Her brothers were also in the Revolutionary War: George, John and Benjamin Little, all still living in 1832. Also,according to Mary Thurman, her uncle was Colonel Jonathan Tipton.

In 1834, Nov. 6, William Brown moved to Lincoln Co., Mo. (Compiler's note: At about this time it is a little difficult to trace the veteran's whereabo,uts. Evidently he moved ba~k and forth from Lincoln Co. , Mo. to Arkansas Territory between May, 1832, and November, 1834. In any case, the above dates are "quotes" from his statements.)

On July 19, 1838 he was living in Washington, Hempstead Co. ,Ark. On Oct. 24, 1838 he gave his place of residence as Thompson twp., Pike Co. , Ark. , when he was about 83 years old. At this time affidavits wer;e given for him by Silas C,Blain; Hiram Kezzia, a clergyman; and David L. Dickson, Clerk of the Court.

In May, 1839, affidavits were given for him by Martha'Coker, Jesse Jenkins, clergyman; and Isaac White, all reSidents of Thompson twp., Pike Co. ,Ark. On May 25, 1839, he was again a resident of Lincoln Co., Mo.

On Sept. 16, 1838, his application was suspended because each tour of duty in his military service was not speCified; his attorney insisted that Mr. Brown "was in the regular service of the United States". (Compiler's note: He was paid through March of 1840 so evIdently hen the attorney won his point. ) ,

REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSIONERS WHO. LIVED. IN ARKANSAS

BRYANT, Benjamin

Compilers Note: Help concerning Benjamin Bryant is requested. He. is listed on the Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary and Military Services (as; returlled under the Act for taking the Sixth Census in 1840) thusly:

"SALINE COUNTY. Benjamin Bryant, age 80, and "head of the family".

He is also listed in Clara Eno's Historic Spots in Arkansas, page 85, as a resident of Pulaski County.

The Agency Books, War Department, shows that he was paid from March, 1831, lO the first quarter of 1842. According to this record he died May 2, 1842. (If we could further identify his serVice, there is probably a Final Payment Voucher that may list his heirs.)

Three men named Benjamin Bryant are listed in Hoyt's Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications. I read each pension. None lived in Arkansas at any tJme. My guess is that he was in one of the Indian Wars. Suggestions welcome.
