A big thank you for your support with Post 16’s Kevin the Carrot

funds. Amazing effort by all concerned.

Message from Katie Murray
Welcome to the latest edition of the newsletter for 2018! We have
had a busy first term as always and the pupils and staff have been working very hard. We have had an enjoyable run up to Christmas
with pantomimes, talent shows and Christmas coffee and crafts. Many thanks to all who attended the events- your support really is
appreciated. We have said good bye to a number of staff this term including Sue Fisher
(Executive Head teacher) and Chris McGuigan (Head of therapy) in addition to a few more. We wish them all well on their new ventures or retirement.
I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look for-ward to seeing you all in the New Year.
Warmest regards, Katie
A teacher from Percy Hedley School has won The Evening Chronicle Champion Teacher Award 2018. Christian Hebron helped raise funds to pay for a visual aid device for one of our students by walking a large part of Hadrian’s Wall and then cycling Coast to Coast. He was nominated for the award by an Evening Chronicle reader. A panel of judges and the Evening Chronicle readers then voted for their winner and Christian collected his award at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel. On the night, Christian told the au-dience that he was honoured and proud to accept the award, but was also a little embarrassed as he didn’t feel that he had done anything out of the ordinary. He went on to say that many of the staff at Percy Hedley go above and beyond to help our students all of the time.

Welcome notes:
That first term seems to have passed in a whirlwind. By the time this Newsletter goes out, I will have had the chance to meet many of you who attend coffee mornings or
school events. I have organised 2 social coffee mornings. These are in response to parent/carer requests for opportunities to meet with other parents; mimicking the play-
ground of most mainstream schools. I must emphasise that staff other than me will not normally attend these as they have departmental ones where you can discuss your child/
young person’s progress with the team. I normally attend these as well. Next term workshops for parent/carers will commence. See the Workshop section in the
Newsletter.
The easiest way to contact me is by email, or messages can be left with Reception staff at Killingworth
Best wishes,
Eileen Robinson Email: [email protected] Telephone: 0191 2161811
Contact information:
A National charity, formerly known as Contact a family is for families with disabled chil-dren. We support families, bring families together and help families take action for others.
On their website you will find downloadable resources. They also have a free helpline: 0808 808 3555
For those unable to attend the PIP workshop, Rachael Turnbull, Parent Advisor, Finance and Welfare also offers telephone advice as a 1 hour call-back service. This covers any
queries or help you need on Benefits.
Workshops/Training opportunities: Benefits Workshops:
I have arranged for Rachael Turnbull from Contact to do 2 workshops in the New Year.
Many of you have asked for these and will be: Monday 14th January 2019: PIP (Personal Independence Payment) 09.30-12.00
Monday 18th March 2019: Benefits 09.30-12.00
For these to go ahead a minimum of 10 people will be required. Booking forms have been
sent out.
E-Safety: Tuesday 12th February 2019: 10:00-11:30 (refreshments 09:30-10)
This will be delivered by Maria Mawdesley, IT Teacher at Percy Hedley School. I can’t em-phasise enough how valuable these sessions are for families and feedback from previous
sessions has been extremely positive.

3CHe thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas trip to Newcastle. We travelled to Central Station on the Metro and then walked up to the Centre for Life to the open air ice rink. We had lots of fun sliding around on the ice in our wheelchairs with staff wearing very fetching ice grips on their shoes. We also had time to walk up to see Fenwick’s window getting very excited by the story of The Snowman. It was great to see all of the decorations making
Newcastle look very festive! A lovely day enjoyed by all. Happy Christmas from 3CHe!

TS Join Blyth Lifeboat Crew
Our topic this term
has been ‘People
Who Help Us’ so the
students and staff in
TS arranged a visit
to the Lifeboat
House in Blyth. We
learned all about
staying safe near
the water. We
looked at some of
the equipment and
tried on the
uniform.

We had great fun at Seven

Penguin vs peas performance
we then played lots of games.

3CHe had a lovely Christmas lunch in their classroom. Thanks to all of the catering crew!
2BE Reach Dubai With Baby Shark
As part of our topic, Schools, 2BE made a video about all of the lovely things which we enjoy doing at school. The video was shared on social media and has had 6.6K views so far! We have asked other schools to tell us what they like doing at their school and already we have seen what a class in Dubai do in their maths lessons! We have also visited local primary school Bailey Green where we joined in a literacy lesson and have invited them to come to us to see what we do in our lessons. We have written letters to them and hope that we can become pen pals for the foreseea-ble future. If you haven’t seen the video you can find it on The Percy Hedley Foundation Facebook page, let us know what you think!

PTA UPDATE PTA
Thanks to those who have supported the PTA this term. We produced, with support of 2 parents and Hedleys Printworks a lovely A3 calendar featuring many of our students.
We hope that you enjoyed browsing through. Our 100 Club has had less support than in previous years. The first draws will be done for months September to February at
the PTA AGM. If you would still like to join, it is £12 for the whole year, with half of the proceeds coming to the PTA. We have been unsuccessful in our bid to do a bucket col-
lection at Theatre Royal this year and would very much appreciate some ideas as to
how we can raise funds for the classes. I know how much the staff appreciate these funds and see how much they benefit your children/young people.
If you have any suggestions for easy ways to raise funds, please get in touch. We are
well aware of the demands on parents/carers of students attending Percy Hedley and always bear this in mind when arranging things.
Best wishes, Eileen Robinson.

Again a big, big thank you for your continued support with this years Christmas raffles.
The main raffles prizes are listed on the back page and all have been claimed straight away. The first prize went to one of our
students in Christian Hebron’s class, so well done and have fun spending your gift vouchers.
Fenwick were kind to us again this year and supplied a limited
addition Snowman to go with their window theme. This helped raise extra funds for the raffle and we are over the moon with our
grand total of over £1600, which will go directly into the school funds for equipment and events for the students. None of this
would be possible without your support, so again, thank you.

GREATEST TALENTSHOW
We all had fun at this years Express Your Elf Talent Show! The crowd was huge for an awesome, terrific show. There was magic, jokes, singing, read-
ings and dancing.
Well done to all performers who took part this year and the awesome stage crew!
Overall, it was the Greatest Talent Show in Percy Hedley’s School!
The Gymnastics was held at the Northern Hope
Centre Birtley on Wednesday 7th November. There were 7 stations ranging from vaulting,
bars, trampolining, ropes and balance beam. The students had 10 minutes at each station to prac-tice then perform certain skills which they were
awarded points out of 10. Theses scores were then added up and a total score handed in at the
end of the stations.

Football Participation League
Update on the football league
Since the last newsletter the football team from post 16 have played
two more fixtures scores below
14/11/18
Special Olympics vs Hedleys 0 – 4
Tynemet vs Hedleys 0 – 3
Early Intervention vs Hedleys 4 – 4
12/12/18
The Parks vs Hedleys 2-2
South Tyneside Vs Hedleys 5 - 1
Early Intervention Vs Hedleys 3 – 2
The coach was there on both fixtures to help
and support the team who are really playing well and some of the above results do not give the team the justice they deserve.
Needless to say we are all looking forward to
the New Year
Inter schools Competitions
Hedleys have done the first two inter school
competitions Basketball and New age Kurling. Both competitions were a mixture of students
from lower school and upper school. The students who took part had been receiving coaching the term before the event and the result on the day was brilliant there were some out-
standing performances. Sports leaders helped top plan and
coordinate the events
