GENERAL INFORMATION The 34th Annual Family Medicine Winter Symposium is designed to present new and updated topics useful to practicing family physicians and other primary care providers, with special emphasis on refining diagnostic and therapeutic skills.

OBJECTIVESFollowing participation in the early-bird sessions, you will be prepared to: • provide valid evaluation of clinical performance by medical studentsFollowing participation in plenary sessions, you will be prepared to:• select the most appropriate antihypertensive medications based on the recommendations of the JNC 8 panel• describe the technique of chest compression-only cardiocerebral resuscitation, and compare the results to conventional CPR• explain the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) rationale for annually screening adults age 55 to 80 years for lung cancer who have a 30 pack/year smoking history and currently smoke, or have quit within the last 15 years, using low-dose computed tomographyFollowing participation in various concurrent sessions, you will be prepared to:• identify dermatologic disorders seen more often in athletes• review the latest treatment guidelines on lowering elevated cholesterol, and discuss how to implement them in your practice• discuss the family physician’s role in the diagnosis and management of bipolar affective disorder• discuss the diagnosis and management of migraines, tension headaches, and menstrual-related headaches• discuss the indications, patient selection, and potential advantages of using transcatheter techniques for patients with cardiac valve disease• review scholarly activities of KUSM–W family medicine residency programs• discuss a community education campaign to implement chest compression-only cardiocerebral resuscitation for witnessed cardiac arrest in McPherson, Kansas• diagnose and treat various conditions causing rashes in children• distinguish various causes of dizziness, and develop appropriate treatment strategies for patients• discuss indications for expectant, medical, and surgical treatment of patients with incomplete and missed spontaneous abortions• differentiate among various disorders causing hip pain by using examination techniques• discuss infection, recurrence, diagnosis, management, and assessment of cure in patients infected with C. difficile• discuss the status of rural trauma in Kansas• discuss current USPSTF recommendations for child and adolescent screening• discuss new information pertinent to physicians who provide care and management to pregnant women• develop appropriate management of patients with otitis media, based on recent evidence, and select antibiotics for treatment based on the age of the patient• effectively prescribe medications that best fit the needs of a given patient with diabetes• discuss current USPSTF recommendations for adult women• explain the most recent evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and management of pharyngitis

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT This Live activity, 34th Annual Family Medicine Winter Symposium, with a beginning date of 12/05/2014, has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 8.50 Prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME activities approved for AAFP credit are recognized by the AOA as equivalent to AOA Category 2 credit.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

REGISTRATION This event is designed for family physicians although registration is open to physicians in all specialties. Physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses may also benefit and are encouraged to attend. The fee includes a course syllabus, refreshments, and lunch. Upon receipt of your registration, you will be directed to the conference website http://wichita.kumc.edu/fcm-wintersymposium and will be able to print handouts after Dec. 2. Printed handouts are available with advanced payment of $25.

With preregistration, KU School of Medicine–Wichita resident physicians and medical students may attend without charge. Lunch will be provided.

Refunds requested in writing by Nov. 26, are subject to a $15 administrative charge. No refunds will be made after Nov. 26.

Early registration is recommended. Seating, materials, and refreshments may not be available for on-site registrants.
