My fither, Carey Titus Kinney (1919- 1972), was born in the house built by his fither, Carey Russell Kinney (1886- 1962) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. After my fither's maiden sister died in 1988, the homestead was sold. While cleaning out the house we found a large steamer trunk filled with old family letters dating back to the 1700's. I As an example of how the wtworking process works, let rn describe a series of events, which have all been both beneficial and pleasurable!

I In June 1997 Niel and I visited the library in Deland, Volusia County, FL, a not-uncommon activity when we have time to spare. Also, as usual, I checked

The Winter 1996-7 issue (V2, #4) contained a 1917 Baltimore Morning Sun obituary for John Brune Cary, a pd-nephew of Thomas Jefferson. In the next issue we identified his parents and included inbrmation from John Brune Cary's death certificate.

Later we located secondary infbrmation on p. 89, Some Prom& Virginia FamiZies by Louise Peoquet du Bellet (1907). His parents were identified as Colonel Wilson Miles Cary @. 1806) and Jane Margmt Carr, while his siblings were:

As a result of a later search of DE Census records for 1870 and I 880, I was able to identify the parents and siblings of Robert A. Carey, Sr., in Kent County. While his tither, Absalom Hallock Carey, was born 1830 in Orange Co., NY, and his mother, Doretta Willamena Hahn, was born in 1856, Hanover, Gemany, their children were born in New Zealand and in Delaware.

At that point I put the search aside-probably to work on the next newsletter ... However. a

Officers of the Barep/thq jamdp have approached leaders of Carey's United Methodist Church regarding the possibility of establishing a Carey/Cary Family Fund. Its purpose would be to provide ongoing support for the special service at Carey's Church, held in conjunction with the Carey/Cary reunion, as well as support for the Church itself Progress in the fbrmation of the Fund will be reported in a hture issue of the &arep/&arp 3- %?ew.

from Delaware who served the Union during the Civil War were cited for their service to their country.

Several examples of religious service by family members were presented. Jonathan Carey, ST., born in Delaware, was a Methodist minister in Hamilton County IN. His son Joshua H. Carey, a Methodist Episcopal minister and circuit rider, preached for more than 40 years. Elijah W. Carey donated land for construction of Carey's Church; Adolphus Carey, well known for his devotion to his kith, died in church while praying, Dr. J. Franklin Carey, well known Methodist minister in Maryland, V i n i a , and Florida, served as a District Superintendent and Vaughn A. Carey has served as the Sunday School Superintendent of Line United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and still serves in that capacity at age 87.

In wncluding. Niel wmmented on the value of the Carey/Cary family ties with Carey's Church and expressed the hope that the relationship would not only continue, but be strengthened.

from the 1860's to the 1880's. These letters were to and from members of the family of Eliza Anne Carey Kinney (182+-19&), daughter of John Carey and mother of Muriel Kinney.

Afier the first fifty or so letters I felt as if 1 really knew each of these family members! I then remembered Muriel's manuscript and decided to take a break fiom the letters and read her work. I had hesitated to read it because I knew she was an English professor and thought that the work might be a bit stuffy. To my delight I hund that not to be the case at dl. It is a treasure trove of family history as well as early American history, especially early Ohio history. Muriel quoted fiom old family letters dating fiom early 1800's to 1880 which give a delighthl insight into the life of Ohio's early settlers. John Carey was very politically n ive , last serving as a Representative of the 9th Ohio District to the 36th Congress, so there is a great deal of political correspondence and many newspaper accounts quoted in the manuscript.

I have been very fortunate in meeting Helen and Niel through the Internet, and I find the CareyICary Family Organization very exciting. What fun to laare relatives! I have kn sharing

Family Research Adventures (Cont'd +pg. I)

County Engineers' files are treasure chests full of maps, surveys and, if you are lucky, an 1875 county atlas with a map of property lines and owners' names. In 1875 most of the property lines still hadn't changed from the original homesteads. By tracing the deeds from your ancestor's to the owner in 1873, you can locate the property on the atlas map, compare that to a modern road map, and, if you are still lucky, drive to your ancestor's homestead.

We've had to use U.S. Geological Survey maps to find some of the older places like the Neblett family cemetery where Janie's gea t -pdparen t s are buried. The old abandoned cemetery is still marked on the survey map, but it is now in a Tennessee Valley Authority wilderness area. We had to put on our snake boots and back our way through the brush over several hills to get there. It was well worth the effort because it not only gave us a lot of names and dates of Janie's kinfolks, it gave her the opportunity to be and see where they lived and played in the stories her Grandmother Jennie used to tell her. Thanks to that visit, we were able to help reclaim and maintain the cemetery.

While visiting the old home places is a good way to learn about your dead relatives, the best thing about it is meeting the living ones whose ancestors never left there. Not only are they likely to have a lot of old family Bibles and mementos, but they may well be the friendliest, most interesting, and most hospitable people you will ever meet So go prepared to spend the night ...
