“The Right Time to Be Intoxicated” Proverbs 5:19
In Proverbs 5, Solomon warns the young man against marital infidelity. And in the process of warning the young man against the adulteress, he encouraged the young man to be intoxicated with love for his wife and with the love of his wife. Solomon said in Proverbs 5:19b, “…be intoxicated always in her love” (ESV). The word “intoxicated” is also translated as: enraptured, captivated, ravished, and infatuated. The whole idea is to be so in love with your wife that you are like a drunken man totally under the influence of the power of your love for her!
Can you remember the days when you were intoxicated with love for your spouse? Can you remember the days when you dreamed of each other in a fond manner – when you couldn’t wait to see each other, to hear each other’s voice, or to feel each other’s touch? What a wonderful feeling it is to be intoxicated with love for your spouse.
You may say, but life has taken its toll on us, and those days and feelings are but a faint memory. They are long gone, and it’s not realistic to expect such enraptured emotions to be reignited. The challenges and disappointments of life have stripped us of that kind of love, and now we just tolerate each other as we wait on the inevitable – the Lord’s return, or death – whichever comes first.
Unfortunately, that’s what many married couples feel. The wine of romantic love has run out! But God gives us permission to be intoxicated with love for our spouses. And some of us need to start drinking again. But you need to fill your glass with the right kind of wine.
Fill your glass with the wine of loving words of compliments, instead of the bitter words of complaints.
Fill your glass with the wine of kindness instead of meanness.
Fill your glass with the wine of tenderness and affection, instead of with coldness and indifference.
Fill your glass with the wine of spending quality time with one another, instead of avoiding each other.
Fill your glass with the wine of sexual intimacy, instead of sexual neglect; because God ordained marital sex (Hebrews 13:4).
Fill your glass with the wine of good deeds and loving acts of service, instead of the spirit of – you are on your own, do it yourself.
Fill your glass with the wine of loving patience and forgiveness, instead of impatience and condemnation.
The point is, you don’t have to have a dry marriage; you can have a marriage that is full of life because you are full of the intoxicating elixir of love for your spouse. Enjoy your wife, enjoy your husband, enjoy your marriage, enjoy your family, and you will enjoy life! George Williams, Minister
