Through the installation of a sollar water pump in

the village of Quidjogoro, Guinea Bissau, FAO and

Auralight implemented a project aimed at

improving access to water and fish processing. This

project also allowed for the rapid training of local

youth on the maintenance and repairing of the

solar pump. All 462 villagers benefited from this

project.

Through this partnership, the parties continue to

support small-holder food processing enterprises

and promote sustainable food systems. Through its

restaurant chain, Autogrill Italy now offers the

ecological produce of the Bolivian El Ceibo , which

is comprised of more than 48 cooperatives of small

producers, totaling 1300 memebrs.

The two partners are conducting activities in the

field of agricultural statistics and policies, as well as

the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS)

in selected countries (Nigeria, India, Bangladesh)

using innovative methods and digital technology

are being implemented. Bangladesh is currently

receiving support to improve its agricultural market

information systems, using innovative methods

and digital technology. This initiative was designed

in the context of the Agricultural Market

Information System (AMIS) established at the

request of the Agriculture Ministers of the G20 to

enhance food market transparency and encourage

coordination of policy action in response to market

uncertainty.

In 2015, the Capacity Building in Rural Finance

(CABFIN) Partnership in Rural Finance (FAO, IFAD,

WFP, GIZ and World Bank) and the Boulder

Institute of Microfinance inaugurated the first

edition of the Rural and Agricultural Finance

Programme, a highly specialized, intensive three-

week diploma program on rural and agricultural

finance. The Programme offers courses on various

specialized topics of rural finance to staff from key

public and private institutions involved in rural

finance from different parts of the world. In 2017,

the third edition of the Program has taken place in

July in Turin. It has witnessed an increased student

base from the previous edition, as well as a

renewed teaching faculty.

In collaboration with CEMA, FAO is finalizing the

development of training materials on ‘Hire services

as a business’ to support smallholders in gaining

access to mechanization hire services that are in

line with FAO’s stake on sustainable agricultural

mechanization. Furthermore, FAO, WorldBank,

CEMA, UNIDO, AGRA and the African Conservation

Tillage Network organized a Consultative Meeting

on “A mechanization strategy for sub-Saharan

Africa” (Nairobi, Kenya). The focus was on new

models for sustainable agricultural mechanization

in sub-Saharan Africa. CEMA, FAO and World Bank

are working on a technical proposal for a larger

programme on bringing sustainable mechanization

forward in Africa through private-public-

partnerships.

chickpeas and lentils from agricultural cooperatives

In 2015, Google and FAO signed an agreement to

optimize Google's technical expertise in geospatial

products and use its technology to enhance forest

and land monitoring data. This year, this

collaboration has made significant progress with

the FAO Collect Earth application, which works

with Google Earth to analyse forest areas in

conjunction with Google Earth Engine and Open

Foris Collect. FAO and other partner institutions

have used this technology to conduct the first

detailed assessment of trees and forest cover in

dryland biomes. The preliminary results of this

work were published in the “Science” journal in

May 2017 as a reference for the global monitoring

of drylands.

In Latin America, the two organizations worked

with the Committee on Sustainability Assessments

(COSA), and Soil & More to develop a new product

in the SAFA series, known as the SAFA Small App -

designed to assess the sustainability practices of

small-scale producers. In Uganda, the two

organizations distributed specially programmed

smartphones to farmers in rural villages across 35

districts of the country, with the goal of providing

them access to relevant, timely information on

agricultural technologies and practices for

smallholders. Furthermore, FAO and the Grameen

Foundation jointly developed a course on how

public and private financial institutions can apply

ICTs for the delivery of financial products for

smallholder families.

activities such as facilitation of TRAGSA's

(Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Niger) of the

International Cooperation and Development

Spanish Agency (AECID) to be presented to the EU

Trust Fund for Sahel Countries. Furthermore, FAO-

Mali and Tragsa are developing strategic areas of

potential collaboration in support of 1)

agroforestry aiming at enhancing the value-added

of some agricultural value chains, and 2) the

livestock sector and animal health-related issues.

There is also a joint collaboration in the

development of tools and methodologies in

FAO and IKEA are working together on a forestry

certification initiative aimed at promoting the

sustainable management of forest plantations and

empowering forest-reliant communities in Viet

Nam. Certification provides a mechanism for

monitoring the sustainability of forest

management and for tracing timber and other

forest products through supply chains to ensure

they were produced and handled responsibly and

in compliance with the law.

This collaboration allows for the distribution of

information related to FAO's mandate and work

through the IFAJ network. Furthermore, IFAJ and

excellence in global food security reporting—

award for a journalist or communicator who has

contributed significantly to raise awareness on

fighting hunger and/or food security.

Within this partnership framework, the two

entities delivered a training in Juba, South Sudan

while the follow-up/support from Kuehne

continues to help improve efficiency of its logistics

system in one of the Level 3 emergencies that FAO

is responding to. A training was also delivered in

Morogoro, Tanzania. Currently a PhD student is

conducting a study on “Cash transfer scheme as

mechanism to improve diets of poor and

inclusiveness of small holders in the chain” as part

of a city-region food system project.

In the area of Mycotoxin prevention and control

one specific activity of the collaboration with MARS

covers data generation aimed to expand the

functionalities of the FAO sampling tool, by

including mycotoxins/commodities combinations

that are currently not covered by the tool.

Furthermore, two of the Mars food safety experts

participated in a virtual seminar with a group of

Tanzanian officials to explain the postharvest

mycotoxin contamination model that could be of

use in Tanzania. Following a request to FAO for

technical advice, a MARS expert participated in a

recent meeting of producers of lipid based

nutritional products for malnourished populations

to provide expert advice on physical hazards and

objectionable matter in the production of low

moisture foods

In 2016, progress was made in the implementation

of a pilot stage in the Kakuma refugee camp in the

district of Turkana, Kenya, which currently hosts

170,000 refugees who have fled wars and violence

in neighbouring countries. As the second

component of this stage, camp residents will be

given prepaid cards for the purchase of charcoal for

sustainable stoves produced locally by the

community. This partnership involves pursuing a

future partnership initiative on resource

mobilization whereby MasterCard customers can

use a special mechanism to make donations to the

FAO to support the fight against hunger.

Australia has funded the deployment of 18 Standby

in Iraq, Turkey and Ethiopia. As at 07 July 2017, the

total value of these deployments was around USD

In April 2017, FAO and Consumers International (CI,

the world confederation of consumer groups)

signed an agreement aimed at improving CI’s

food handling along the value chain and promotion

of healthy nutritional habits and sustainable diets.

CI and FAO are developing a training framework to

increase and reinforce the knowledge of FAO's

objective of the project was to explore the role of

Two organizations continue continue to collaborate

in several countries around the world. In Chad, a

project was jointly developed by FAO and the Croix

Rouge Tchadienne for the strengthening of

resilience for food and nutrition security in the

West Batha region, including a joint concept note

and joint fundraising. In Vietnam, the ECHO

approved a community-based finance based

forecasting (FBF) project valued at over USD

800,000, to be implemented in partnership with

the Vietnam Red Cross/IFRC and UN Women.

Furthermore, the IFRC and FAO developed a joint

concept note to implement a “Tree Planting and

Caring Campaign” in support to the GGW for the

Sahara and the Sahel initiative.

product development, and marketing. In Cuba,

products with potential to be included in the

FAO and TAUT conducted a feasibility study on the

possible application of the Sistema Agro Forestal

de Tomé-Açu (SAFTA) to cacao plantations in

Ghana. SAFTA is a Japanese-Brazilian system of

successional agroforestry in the Amazon.

Furthermore, starting from November 2016, a

course has been introduced at the graduate level

to teach TUAT students the mandate and activities

of FAO in eradicating hunger and malnutrition.

CATIE and FAO are jointly carrying out capacity

development activities throughout the region, in

areas related to natural resource conflict

management, forest financing strategies, and

forest biomass assessment. In Central America, the

collaboration focuses on forest/agro-forestry and

natural resource-related projects, strengthening

local capacities and conducting joint research and

studies. FAO and CATIE have also produced joint

publications such as books and guides on

community-based approaches.

In 2016 and 2017 the two partners continued to

share and exchange of data and resources for the

global databases on individual food consumption.

They furthermore mutually promoted the initiative

and joint efforts done under this partnership

The FAO OPCC e-learning courses have been

integrated into a Master’s in Food Security, which

is being delivered by the Open and Distance

University of Mexico (UnADM), since May 2015.

FAO is furthermore taking advantage of the wide

network of over 226 universities which are part of

UDUAL to disseminate existing FAO e-learning

courses, developed by OPCC e-learning unit, in

collaboration with a number of partners.

of activities related to development cooperation in

The two partners jointly developed a capacity

building video materials based on a conference

recorded with an FAO official. This collaboration

allowed for capacity building materials to be

available to decision makers, civil society

leaderships, parliamentarians and academics in all

CPLP member countries.

FAO and University of Louvain are working

together towards enhancing institutional

knowledge exchanges and strengthening of

capacities to address global climate change

mitigation and adaptation as well as combating

desertification. Among other things, the two

partners are working on remote-sensing dryness

mapping for early warning systems of desert locust-

affected countries in Africa and Asia; and

assessment, monitoring, sustainable management

and restoration of dryland forests and

agrosilvopastoral systems to address land

degradation/desertification and climate change in

particular in Great Green Wall countries

Roma Tre and FAO continue to collaborate in a

number of areas related to the Organization's

mandate. Tge Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

hosted a seminar to share experiences on global

partnerships to support the achievement of SDG1

and to promote knowledge platforms and

networks that contribute to the overall

achievement of the SDGs, with participation by the

University and FAO. Furthermore, a number of FAO

officials delivered lectures to master's students.

Among other things, the two parties have agreed

to work jointly on emerging pandemic zoonotic

threats under the One Health Initiative;

development of a new ULiège Master’s degree

course on Integrated Health Risk Management in

the Global South; joint research on the climate

change-migration nexus and its impacts on rural

youth and agriculture; exploration of sustainable

energy sources for displaced communities to

reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas

emissions.

FAO and UoT continue to collaborate in a number

of different areas. Last year, an FAO official

delivered a presentation during the University’s

international symposium called “Agricultural

Education for Sustainable Development (Ag-ESD)

symposium”. The University furthermore

participated in the FAO’ regional meeting on

biotechnology in Thailand.

Recently, both FAO and WUR affirmed their

commitment to address malnutrition and improve

diets in alignment with the Decade on Nutrition

and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As a result, in 2016 the parties signed an

Addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding

to form a Joint Nutrition Focus Group to stimulate

activities on this issue. FAO and WUR furthermore

joined efforts to support the FAO Code of Conduct

for Responsible Fisheries which promotes an

ecosystem approach to aquaculture. FAO taught a

module focusing on the ecosystem approach to

aquaculture and spatial planning that formed part

of a larger international training course entitled

organized by Wageningen University. The two

entities also organized a number of events and

workshops.
