Compassion Respect Partnership Learning

We held a Farewell Service, Community Farewell Celebration and Reflection Walk in September to honour the memories of those who have travelled through our hospice at Woburn Road. Many in our community took the opportunity to remember their loved ones, write and draw messages on the walls, and say goodbye to the building one last time.

FA R E W E L LCELEBRATIONS

Farewell136 Woburn

Road

Reading about some of our supporters in this newsletter leaves me both amazed and humbled by the kindhearted people in our community. On behalf of Te Omanga Hospice, I would like to sincerely thank you and everyone who has supported us this year.

I wish you and your family all the very best for the festive season.

Biddy HarfordChief Executive

In September, we waved goodbye to our last patient staying at our hospice in Woburn Road, bid farewell to our building, and moved to our temporary home in Britannia Street, Petone.

A number of farewell celebrations were held and I know from my conversations with people, many treasured the opportunity to farewell the building, share their memories and leave messages to loved ones.

Our move to Britannia Street went smoothly with the help of the very efficient and capable NZ Army, along with Hammond Transport Upper Hutt and many other volunteers from our community.

We are settling in well to our temporary home and adjusting to the cozier rooms and working space.

A family member of a patient took me by surprise the other day when he exclaimed, “I am so pleased you are continuing your service”. From my perspective, the care and support we provide to people in the Hutt Valley is a necessity and we must be there for those who need us, when they need us and wherever they need us. It was never an option for us not to continue our complete range of services during this period of transition.

I am pleased to let you know we have already raised $4 million towards our goal of $10 million to rebuild the hospice. We appreciate the generosity of people in our community who have made donations, grants and pledges towards the rebuild. Now our focus is on raising the remainder of the funds to progress our building project, which is expected to take around a year to complete.

WHAT A YEAR!As I write to you from our hospice in Britannia Street, I reflect on what an eventful year it has been for Te Omanga. Both a busy and exciting time as our plans to rebuild our hospice are now fully in motion.

Biddy Harford, Chief Executive.

AN EMOTIONAL FAREWELLYu Yan Cao was the very last patient to be cared for at Te Omanga Hospice in Woburn Road before we closed the doors and moved to Britannia Street.

After an operation and long stay at hospital, Yu Yan came to the hospice very unwell. She explains how she began to feel much better at the hospice, “it is very good care here, like a family all together. People are always smiling; it’s good medicine and makes you feel ok”.

Being a local resident, she had passed the hospice at Woburn Road many times on her way to the library but did not know what was hidden down the driveway. When

her husband drove her down the driveway she exclaimed, “this is not a hospice, this is a hotel!”

Yu Yan feels very lucky to have come to the hospice and took pleasure in wandering around the beautiful gardens. She also enjoyed the meals prepared by the cooks at Te Omanga, telling her husband one night, “I don’t want Asian food. I want Betty’s cooking!”

It was an emotional farewell as Yu Yan left to go home. Staff and volunteers cherished the time spent caring for such a special patient in the last days at our hospice in Woburn Road.

Te Omanga is privileged to be part of Hospice New Zealand’s Farmers Tree of Remembrance again. It gives people an opportunity to remember loved ones at Christmas by donating and writing a message on a special card to place on Christmas trees in Farmers stores across New Zealand.

Farmers are also selling stunning hand painted glass baubles designed by NZ Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design student Jemma Smith. Trees and baubles are in Farmers stores from now until Christmas Eve. 100% of the donations and proceeds from the baubles purchased at Farmers in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt, comes directly to Te Omanga Hospice.

300 guests were welcomed to a spectacular roaring 20's themed Vintners’ Lunch at Expressions in Upper Hutt in July.

On our 10th anniversary of this successful event, guests enjoyed fine wine and a six course degustation lunch by: Brent Bonner from Sarah Searancke Catering, Yufei Xie from OLI & MI Kitchen, James Scott from Field & Green, Laurent Loudeac from

Hippopotamus, Nic Spicer from CoCo at The Roxy and Jonathan Dowling from Soprano’s.

Over $107,000 was raised on the day for Te Omanga, which is the best result yet. To all our talented Chefs, the Sommelier, Cocktail Maker, MC, Entertainers, Auctioneer, Volunteers and so many others who contributed - thank you all so much.

Thank you Brady Dyer Photography for capturing moments throughout the lunch. We are very grateful to the many businesses who generously supported us with auction items and sponsorship, and to each and every one of our wonderful guests.

Nikki Everton completing her first ever ultramarathon in support of Te Omanga

We are in awe of Nikki Everton who ran her first ever ultramarathon in October, raising an incredible $3,435 for Te Omanga Hospice through donations to her 'give a little' page.

Nikki was running in memory of her Dadwho was cared for by Te Omanga."We were able to keep him in our family. home until the very end, and this was only possible because of the amazing support that the staff at Te Omanga Hospice provided" said Nikki.

"I know you have a massive task ahead fundraising for the new building and I wanted to give back so figured my crazy running goal was a great opportunity to do so!" The Taupo Ultramarthon was 74km, requiring a heap of physical and mental stamina to complete, which Nikki had plenty of. She was the 1st women over the line and 8th overall, completing it in 8 hours and 28 minutes.

Thank you Nikki for choosing Te Omanga as your recipient charity and congratulations on achieving your crazy running goal.

RUNNING FOR HOSPICE

A great night was had at the 2017 Festival of Summer Fashion at The Mall in Upper Hutt. Ballentynes, Farmers and Pagani showcased some fabulous fashion. Shirley Jones has been running this event since 2007 and has raised over $125,000 for the hospice over the years through this event and other fundraising initiatives.

We can’t thank Shirley enough for organising this event, along with her support crew, who gave so much time and energy to this extravaganza. Over $8,800 was raised for Te Omanga on the night.

It was a feast of fashion over the last two months as the Soroptimist International of Lower Hutt ran a Fashion Show in support of Te Omanga at Ballantynes in Lower Hutt. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported these events.

FESTIVAL OF FASHION

Te Omanga Hospice has launched a new fundraising programme called 'Days of Care'. It's a unique opportunity to choose a specific Day of Care to help us provide much needed palliative care and support to patients and their families in our community.

Your gift of a Day of Care could be one where moments are treasured within a family for a very long time - a last wish is granted, a much awaited wedding occurs or a beloved family member returns to visit. By gifting a Day of Care, you can honour someone's memory or celebrate a special day, like an anniversary or birthday of a loved one who has died.

Louise and Rob Line are one of the first local business people who have chosen to gift three Days of Care. "We have known many people who have gone through the hospice and it's good to be in a position with the business where we are able to support such a great cause," says Rob.

Their business is supplying and installing garage doors, and a percentage from the sale of every door will be credited towards their Day of Care fundraising.

Lynette, their Office Manager, discovered the amazing care and support Te Omanga Hospice provides when her mother was diagnosed with a life limiting illness. Rob goes onto say, "how could we not be moved when Lynette talked about the difference the hospice made to their family during a very difficult time?"

A gift of $1,500 for one Day of Care is the amount we ask you to give or raise. If you own a business, why not let your clients know in lieu of Christmas gifts this year, you'll be using the funds towards a Day of Care for Te Omanga Hospice instead!

If you'd like to know more about gifting a 'Day of Care', please contact Marie Jupp, Days of Care Coordinator, on 021 192 8724 or [email protected].

GIFTING A DAY OF CARE

For more than 22 years, Heather Spence has been working in the specialty of palliative care, in a variety of roles both here and in Scotland. For the past ten years she has been diligently studying towards becoming a Nurse Practitioner. In September, she sat her final assessment to become the first Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner in the Hutt Valley.

A Nurse Practitioner has advanced education, clinical training and the demonstrated competence and legal authority to practise beyond the level of a Registered Nurse. Heather talks about her journey to become a Nurse Practitioner, "it's been long and interrupted at times by many obstacles but at no time did I take my eye off the end goal."

Heather works in Primary Care at Te Omanga Hospice supporting patients and their families at home, GPs, practice nurses, specialist nurses, and her colleagues in many ways. She is passionate about palliative care and committed to improving access in the community, regardless of diagnosis. "I want to see improved health outcomes through the delivery of high quality and efficient care across a range of providers. I want to support and empower primary healthcare providers while maintaining the ethic of care."

Congratulations on your amazing achievement Heather. Te Omanga has been pleased to support part of your journey and are proud to have you as part of our dedicated team.
