Newsletter #7 June 2016 FAREWELL SPEECH iARTS GRADUATES Dear Rosa, Taam, Larissa, Leana & Suzanne, Hereby the other students and I would like to congratulate you on your way to graduation… What a journey it must have been. We can only imagine that at this very moment there are mixed feel- ings. Happy to have nearly finished this crazy and intense programme and sad for the closing of, what must have been an important time in your lives. I don’t think there has ever been one iArts student who entered the classroom on the first day and really knew what to expect. I believe it is safe to say that this was the same for you. Unaware of what was really in store for you, you all sat down that first day and looked around you, not knowing that the people who were there with you were basically going to be your new family. The people you were going to work, cry, laugh, collaborate, fight and basically live with for the upcoming 3 years. Reflecting on the last three years now, I hope you all look back with a good and satisfying feeling and that you are proud of yourselves. I believe I may speak for everyone when I tell you all that you will be missed very much. Good luck with everything that lies ahead of you and… I was going to go for a cheesy inspirational quote but I don’t think you guys need one… All the best, Bibi Kampstra Second year student

FAREWELL SPEECH iARTS GRADUATES

Dear Rosa, Taam, Larissa, Leana & Suzanne,

Hereby the other students and I would like to congratulate you on your way to graduation… What a journey it must have been. We can only imagine that at this very moment there are mixed feel-ings. Reflecting on the last three years now, I hope you all look back with a good and satisfying feeling and that you are proud of yourselves.

Good luck with everything that lies ahead of you and… I was going to go for a cheesy inspirational quote but I don’t think you guys need one…

FIRST YEARS CURRENT PROJECT:Arts & Entrepreneurship

This block, Arts and Entrepreneurship, started with a presentation during the Kunsttour in Maastricht. On Boschstraat, in the former Sphinx building, the students created the “Sphinx Museum”. They presented a museum that looks beyond the empty walls, letting the visitor imagine what has been there, while discovering what is already there (but easily overlooked!). An audio tour guided the public’s gaze in their exploration. The visit ended at the ‘museum shop’ with the possibility to purchase memorabilia referring to the experience. The project was realised in three weeks, from con-text to production, and a three-day presentation.During the rest of this block, we focus on the personal exploration in the world of the arts. THE PERFECT HUMAN

20:3029th of June 2016Intro in Situ

For the last 8 weeks, the 2nd year iArts students have been researching different perspectives on what makes the ‘perfect human’. From human biolo-gy to elitism, what determines how perfect you are? And does perfection even exist in the first place?

On the 29th of June, the 2nd year students will present their findings and continue to explore the meaning of ‘perfection’ with you; not as the audience members, but instead as core contributors to a hopefully eternal debate. Read more here.

WHAT’S KEEPING THE 3RD YEARS BUSY...

Catching up with the third year students Written by Abel Enklaar, second year student

To gain a better understanding of what our current third years are working on we decided to sit down with them for a moment and have a chat about what they are working on. Firstly we asked them to explain briefly about their personal project. After which we gave the word to the others of the group. How does their project fit with their trajectory of the past three years? In what ways does someone’s personality shine through their work? and where will they be in five years? A group of six very different individuals. Each with a different path ahead of him or her. Don’t forget to visit their final exhibition “My way or the highway” the 2nd of July at the construction site of the A2, Noormannensingel. To read the full interviews click here.

HOW DID A 1ST, 2ND & 3RD YEAR EXPERIENCE THE PREVIOUS YEAR?A year has passed. Therefore, one student from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year have joined

together to interview and talk with one another about their experiences.

From Left to right- Taam Maas, Willow Ritchie, Bo OudendijkBo 1st year iArts student

How has your first experience been at iArts?

“It was a great experience, I really was able to improve my skills on so many different levels. I learned a lot. I also was able to explore my interest and develop it, and put it in action for my future. I tried everything where I could. The workload was very intense, but when I got out of the struggle I was able to see my progress. ..”

Willow2nd year iArts student

How did you experience this year?

“Well, I guess if I compare it to my first year. I see that in my first year I experienced it as making my-self relevant to the course, so I try to achieve the goals of each block; but what happened in this year is, I feel like I have at least tried to turn it around, now instead I try and make the projects relevant to me...”

Taam3rd year iArts student

How did you experience this year?

“It was like a roller coaster. Every individual presentation from the closing moment in the research and in the creative part, coming up with a creative product. I’ve always described it as a roller coaster...”To read the full interviews click here.

IARTS STUDENTS OUT TO ROMANIA

From the 21st to the 22nd of April 2016, the first, second and 2 third year iArts students travelled to Cluj-Napoca, Romania. As part of the conversations on, the students were able to experience the difference within culture, especially within the art scene, between eastern and western Europe. The entire trip was organised by the students themselves, with essential guidance from the first year Romanian student, Raki. The trip was seen as a success and the stu-dents returned with an online outcome: a blog in which they posted their experi-ences and insights into what they had seen. The blog can be seen on the following link: iartsontour.wordpress.com

iARTS STUDENTS AT THE ‘ART TRANSFORMING SPACES’ PROGRAMME IN BORÅS, SWEDEN

Third- and second-year-iArts-students Suzanne Dekker and Nienke Jonkergouw were asked by research company Dear Hunter to go to the city of Borås, Sweden, on their behalf. From 15th until 23rd of May 2016, they attended the Erasmus+ trainings course ‘Art transforming urban spaces’ with 24 participants from 8 different countries. Together they’ve analysed how artistic practice can (co-)create interaction and battle social issues. The fact that a variety of disciplines and cultures were combined gave a refreshing view on the topic. Next to meeting curators, fine artists, architects, cultural organisations and other creative professionals from all over Europe, Suzanne and Nienke also had the opportunity to give a workshop ‘Subjective Mapping’ to all participants. This workshop was based on a working method of Dear Hunter...

THE SPHINX PROJECT

from other floors (meaning no secure place to store or install things). Still, the students managed to come up with a concept that would show the importance, uniqueness and potential of the space.

As part of the Kunsttour 2016 in Maastricht, the students of year 1 realised the “Sphinx museum”; a three-day presentation of a museum, that took place from 20th to the 22nd of May. The project was produced and executed in a timeline of three weeks. It was set on the whole first floor of the Eiffel building, the former Sphinx Sanitair industrial building. As the students started working in the space, they saw the limitations of such an enormous, lengthy space, such as no light source during the night, or easy access

‘SO’ AT SONSBEEK FESTIVAL“SO” is a project created by artist and iArts teacher Juul Sadée, exhibited at Sonsbeek Festival in Bronbeek, the museum of coloni-alism in Arnhem. The aim of this work is to refer to colonialist times and the impact they still have today in the Moluccan society in the Netherlands, especially the women as they were the ones in charge of the cultural heritage. However, this work transcends its initial purpose as it talks about so much more. It relates to not only the Moluccans but every colonised society, it refers to wom-en globally. One way or another, this artwork manages to reach you and touch something within you...Read more here.
