Speaks Out

On Business

One response to my column of a couple of weeks ago reallysurprised me. GalianoBY DEVEVA BAINES

Recently visiting Mr. and Mrs.Howard at Porlier Pass LightHouse were Rene's brother, PeterGodfrey and his son, Richard, ofWootton Bassett, Wiltshire. Eng-land. They toured all over B.C.,then down to Seattle and GrandeCoulee Dam. Peter is a member ofthe Lions Club and after meetingBill Bamford, he sent a small flagas a token to our Lions Club onGaliano. Young Richard was thrill-ed to spend his 12th birthday at theLight House. He also went out withhis Uncle Geoff to tow in ? smallboat, which had developed enginetrouble.

Little Tracey Macaviddie has hadher Uncle, Aunt and cousin, Ann,staying with them for a while.

Mrs. Lloyd Baines has been upat Namer with her husband, Lloyd,on the "Searcher" for two weeks.

Mrs. Cis Karr, of Montrose,B.C., her son-in-law, Peter Obrien, son and daugher-in-law, Mr. andMrs. Kim Karr and family ofDuncan, have been staying atSalishan this week.

Mrs. Francis Brown, of Victoria, came out for the Fiesta.

Mr. and Mrs. Neil Coward andfamily, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, have been spending summer holi-days with parents. Woody andEllen Coward.THEY MEASURED UP

Lawrence "Bud" Baines, ofSouth Galiano had "quite a catch"Saturday night while heading hometo Whalers Bay.

His trolling lines became entan-gled in something unseen. Hefinally got his lines mostly clearedand started to pull fathoms of smallrope, when it became too heavy topull anymore, he called the govern-ment hovercraft, who was not toofar away standing by for a planethat had run low on fuel.

The hovercraft stood by whileBud pulled up two cement blockswhich held some kind of devicesfor measuring tides. The buoyattached to the lines had beendragged under water and was notvisible. The tidal devices had beenlost for some time. It was rathertrying day for Bud as he didn'arrive in the Bay .mtil way afterdark, around 11 pm still with hisfish to dress and ice.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kolosoff havereturned home after spending mostof the summer fishing up aroundCampbell River in his "Libra."

We are sorry for the to irists butthe rain is certainly a .velcomesight on our tinder-dry island. Thefire wardens are starting to breatheeasier now.

Mr. and Mrs. Stan Bamford, ofSidney, were also around for theFiesta. We were also happy to seeGeorge and Janet Georgeson, bothlooking well and happy.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Websterwere over for our Senior CitizensHarvest Festival and Flower show, which seemed to be quite success-ful. There was a beautiful showingof flowers and vegetables in spiteof the long dry summer. TheGaliano people deserve a greatdeal of credit, and our presidentMrs. LA. Murphy, was on hand togreet everyone, although she hadjust come through a long illness.

GourmetI like French fries in porridge,I love ice cream on ham,And I wish I had the courage,To eat live snails with jam.

Good Egg!Cracked eggs don't scorewith the judges.

Eggs shown in a fairshould be intact and goodlooking in an eggy way.Eleven of a dozen areviewed from the outside. One will be broken open andthe judge assesses it fromthe inside of the shell.

The position of the yolk, the condition of the whiteand the air sac will bechecked.

A good egg stands upwhen it is broken. The yolkis high and curved and stan-ds in the middle of a thickwhite, with a thinner whitearound the edges.

If there is little thickwhite and the yolk liesexhausted in the waterywhite, the egg is not new.Pullets' eggs weigh 18 to 21ounce per dozen. Large eggsrun over 24 ounces a dozen.
