QR Code Project
Lesson Overview• Topic: Farm animals and Zoo animals
• Early Head Start – toddlers age 3
• Content Area – Exploration
• Learning Objective: Children will work in two groups as they go on a scavenger hut to use the QR scanners to link the animals from the farm or the zoo.
• Standards:
• Early Childhood Standards of Quality – for Infants and Toddlers State of MI
• Strand: (C) Exploration
• Goal 4: Infants and toddlers experience environments where they develop a growing sense of social relationships, the natural environment, and the physical world.
• National Technology (ISTE-NETS.S) Standards
INTASC-2011.6i
• The teacher continually seeks appropriate ways to employ technology to support assessment practice both to engage learners more fully and to assess and address learner needs.
Teacher Set-up
• Print QR codes and then post the10 codes around the room.
• Make sure the QR scanners are working correctly.
• Anecdotal notes will be taking during the observation of the scavenger hunt.
Introduction
• Can you identify a farm animal from a zoo animal?1. Provide props for the children to see, touch
and feel.
2. Provide the see and say machine for the children to hear the animals sounds.
3. Provide additional resources (such as magazines of animals for the children to cut out, paste and create a collage of their art work)
4. Showcase the children’s work inside and outside the classroom.
Instructions
• 1) Listen to “Good Night Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann
• 2) Identify each animal from the book
• 3) Explore the animal props from container
• 4) Match the animals from the container to the picture (from the book). Next, groups in scavenger
hunt.
• 5) Find a printed QR code, scan the QR code using an iPad and QR scanner. Identify the animal
you found.
• 6) Everyone in both groups will get a chance to use the scanners.
Conclusion• How well did you know the difference between a farm animal versus a zoo animal?
• Use the see and say machine to allow children to hear each animal sound for comprehension.
The scavenger hunt was incorporated into the activity to reinforce the children’s comprehension. Also, using the children’s artwork will encourage the children in the learning activity. • Create your own collage:
• farm animals
• zoo animals
• Leave the props, see and say machine in the different areas (house area, art area, etc.) so the children can go back and explore for repetition.
Rubric
• Extension: • Allow children to locate the QR code and then (with assistance)
scan the printed barcode to identify the animal type. If the child can not identify the animal allow extra time for the child to go back to prop, pictures in the book or the see and say machine to hear the sound of the animal.
• Easier: • Focus on one animal at a time and then the sound the animal
makes.
• Harder: • Move the printed barcodes in new areas for the children to
locate and then place onto the scanner. Ask children to identify the sound of the animal.
