Food Safety Begins on the Farm: A Grower Self Assessment of Food Safety Risks
PETTING ZOOS
Petting Zoos
Petting zoos have become anintegral part of many enter-tainment farms. Precautions, however, must be taken, withboth the design of the exhibitand communication with cus-tomers, in order to insure thatthese visits are safe and healthrisks are minimized. Outbreaksof human illness have beenlinked to visits to petting zoosin Pennsylvania, Washington,Canada and the United King-dom. Some of the infectious
agents include Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli 0157:H7, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. These disease organisms are passed via fecesand can be picked up directly by petting animals or indirectlythrough contact with bedding, fencing, food, or water troughs. Asthe number of these exhibits increases, precautions must be empha-sized to both operators and visitors.
Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) focus on educating custom-ers about risks, paying attention to animal health, and designingand maintaining exhibits to prevent contamination. Post signs in-structing visitors of farm policies regarding handwashing andhuman-animal interactions. Train employees to assist visitors withunderstanding the risks and ways they can prevent contamination.Providing handwashing facilities and emphasizing the importanceof proper handwashing after visiting the petting zoo and prior toeating or picking fresh fruits and vegetables are some of thestrategies to minimize risks.
All animals in the petting zoo should be up to date for vaccines, and very young animals should be excluded from the exhibit.Animal health should be monitored daily. It is important to remem-ber that many of these diseases can be spread via water troughs
Petting Zoos and Farm Animalsand one sick animal may suggest the whole herd is infected. Manyanimals can harbor these disease organisms without showing anysymptoms.
The design of the animal exhibit should allow careful monitor-ing of visitor traffic and interactions with animals. Visitor movementshould be in a single direction and hand-to-mouth activities (eating, sippy cups, etc) should be avoided while in the exhibit. Handwashingfacilities should be near all exits, with signs describing the impor-tance of handwashing. Providing footdips, shoe disinfectant mats,or a shoe brush at petting zoo exits will help prevent movement ofanimal fecal material to fields. Separate all eating areas from thepetting zoo to minimize risks of cross contamination.
Proper GAPs implementation at on-farm petting zoos will re-duce risks and provide educational, rewarding, and safe experiencesfor farm visitors.
Post signs instructing visitors of farm policies regardinghandwashing and human-animal interactions.
