Sock Cushioning

Sock TerminologyYarn usage concepts Body yarn - typically the heaviest yarn in the sock - the performing yarn that covers the skin. Depending on weight, 60% - 80% of total content. For Farm To Feet socks - wool is the body yarn. Plaiting yarn - structural skeletal yarn from top to toe. Reinforcement plaiting - technique of plaiting yarn to the outside of the sock for durability. Pattern knitting - the technique of dropping body yarn out during knitting to create a desired pattern.

Knitting construction types Outer Nylon Plaiting - more traditional sock construction with body yarn placed next to the skin and the plaiting yarn on the outside of the sock. Typically, traditional knitted socks have more linear designs and air patterns. Hidden Nylon Plaiting - more technical sock construction with the plaiting yarn sandwiched between the body yarn, which is present next to the skin and on the outside of the sock. This type of construction allows for more patterns and customized terry placement.

Sock attributes Stitch Coverage - the density of material over area. Created by both the number of stitches and the size of yarn used in that area. Maximum Cross Stretch - the measurement of a fully stretched section of sock. Typically measured in the leg and foot. Stretch and Recovery - the ability of sock to stretch for t and then recover to original layout after use. Durability - a measure of the socks resistance to abrasion and piling. Durability is typically measured by a Martindale abrasion tester and expressed in number of rubs. Finished layout - the linear height and width measurements of the socks foot, leg, and welt.
