Farm VastuThe principles of Vastu Shastra can be conveniently put to use for choosing agricultural land, for building a farm-house or while performing various farming operations. It is believed that it will lead to an impressive result onterms of agricultural production and general ptosarity. 1 Agricultural land should have slope towards the East or the North directions. But it should not be towards the West or South direction. 2 The agricultural land should never be multilevel. It is necessary that that the plot is leveled. However if it has multileveled blocks the slope should be slanted towards the East or the North sides. If the land blocks have a downward slope towards the South or the West expenditure at the residences exceeds the income. The agricultural plot should be square or rectangular in shape. It should not have a cut in the South-East or the South-West direction. By building a soil or brick wall that is a raised boundary of at least two to three feet or a compound wall this should be removed to make the plot regular in shape. 3 On the West or the South sides of the agricultural land tall trees can be planted as these will prove beneficial. 4 While sowing any crop it should be in the East-West direction. Here the plants will receive adequate sunlight. 5 Underground water storage, tanks boring and other structures should be located in the North-East direction of the North or the East sides. Wells should not be situated in the North-West, South-East or the South-West directions as it will lead to huge losses. Drainage for supplying water to the crops should be built from South to North. The farm house or the hut in the field should be in the South-West side. The farm houses generally belong to the land owners. The huts or residences for the agricultural laborers should be in the South-East or the West directions. The cattle pen should be in the West or the North-West directions. This will give a boost to the income of the family. While tying the pet animals their faces should be in the Northern direction. If it not possible then they should face the East.

Pet animals should never be tied in the South, North-East, or the South-West direction. A high thick compound wall 10 to 20 feet in length and 6 feet in height should be in the South and West sides of the South-West direction of the field. A full fledged wall compound or a raised platform in the West and the South directions will also prove beneficial. There should never be a compound wall or a raised platform in the East or the North directions as well. A wire compound is also permissible. New seeds should be sowed on an auspicious day with the chanting of hymns. Sowing should not be done on Tuesdays or Saturdays. While sowing a new crop the recitation of Gayatri Mantra or Surya Mantra can be very helpful. It is always fruitful to invoke the blessings of god before setting out for an important task. The process of sowing should start from South-East direction and then move onto the South, South-West, West, North-West, North-East and East in a clockwise direction. The reaping of the crop should start from NorthWest, North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West and then West. This, too, should be done clockwise. A sacred fire pit should be prepared in the South-East direction and some grains of the first reaping should be offered to Lord Agni. Some of the grain should be given to the pet animals as well. If a New Moon day occurs during the reaping season then a coconut should be broken in the field while facing the east. This needs to be done in the evening. The pieces of this coconut should be kept at the centre of the field and the four major corners of the field. The following day these pieces should be collected and thrown on the dung hill. If possible on all the New Moon days a marking nut, lemon, seven chillies and a lemon should be tied on the main entrance of the field and the farm house to ward off evil powers. The equipments that are used in the field should always be kept in the South-West corner or the Southern direction. Never keep them in NorthEast, North or East directions. The ideal place for the thrasher machine, the bullock cart and other vehicles is the North-West or the North direction. These should not be kept in the North-East corner. When the ready crop is taken out to the market for sale it should be taken out from either the North, East or the North-West directions. This will result in quick sale and good income. If the crop is taken out from the North - East gate both the sale and the payment will be delayed. If the crop is taken out of the South-West

2

gate it will not get a good price. If the crop is taken out of the South-East gate it leads to loss and troubles. The fodder is to be kept in the South or South-West direction of the field. Dung cakes or the ash should be kept in the South-East direction while the fertilizers and chemicals, important for the crops, should be kept in the Western corner. If subsidiary crop is to be taken along with the main crop the subsidiary crop should be grown in the West or the South direction. While ploughing the field for a new crop it will be beneficial if it begins from the South-East and then clockwise move onto the North-East direction. If the agricultural business is done on a large scale the heaps of grain are to be raised in the West direction. The packing and dispatching office can be located in the North-West part of the West side. Tractors, trucks etc. which carry the grain should be parked with their faces towards the North or the East. While taking a banana crop in the field on the eastern side or the Northern Side of the North-East direction at least ten feet should be kept vacant. It should also be remembered that in a square field of 9x9 feet bananas should not be planted at the center. 3

If grapes seeds are planted then they should be from South to North directions. While sprinkling water the same direction needs to be followed. Fire for warming should never be set up at the centre, the North-East and the North directions. While working in the field, reaping or giving manures to the field one must face towards the East or the North. Never face Southwards. Scare crows should be placed in the South and the West directions. Temples should not be constructed in the field. In case it is there it should be in the West. The idol should face the East. However, all the rituals should be followed properly and regularly. Only the fields on the North or the East side should only be purchased for agricultural purposes. Adjacent fields on the South or the West of an existing agricultural land should not be purchased under any circumstances. However if it is necessary it should be purchased or taken in somebody else`s name. The field owner should not purchase it in his own name. If some part of the field is to be sold, the part lying on the West or the South should be sold. The plot with river or canal on the North or East sides should be purchased. If the river or the canal is on the South side economic loss is imminent. If the well is in the South-West corner of the field there are chances of the field owner`s accident, illness or suicide. A well in the South-East block can make the field owner go bankrupt. If the well is in the North-West block grain can be stolen or it may also lead to enmity. A well in the West is acceptable. But here a wall should be built in the East of this well. The height of the wall should be slightly more than the height of the well. If a motor or pump is installed on the well it should be installed in the SouthEast direction. Instead of covering it completely some space for the passage of air and light should be kept. The drains or the tanks built near the well has to be in the Northern section. Tanks built for drinking water for animals should be in the Western block. The stairs or ladder for entering the well should be in the West or the South directions. If an overhead tanks is built for water to drip or sprinkling of water in the field, it should be built in the West direction. Guidelines for Agriculture VastuAfter analysing the Vaastushastra tenets and principles, some ground rules can be formulated for deriving optimum benefits from Vaastu- Vidya at the planning stage itself Before Planning a Vaastu The following guidelines if interpreted and applied in the right spirit, can help in planning and designing a virtuous Vaastu.

Geometric axis of the Vaastu should be aligned to match with the geomagnetic axis of the plot.

The North-South axis should be longer than the East-West axis.

The major part of the Vaastu construction should be located in the Southwest zone of the plot and open spaces should be provided in the Northeast direction.

Underground water tanks should be planned in the North and the Northeast directions.

Ground terrain should have gradual slopes towards the North and the East directions.

Lumber room or storage room should be located in the Southwest comer.

Excavation should commence from the Northeast side and move in a clockwise direction towards the Southeast side and then onto the Southwest direction. Activities like providing a footing for the structure and ground filling must begin in the Southwest. 7

To avoid any ill effects of neighbouring Vaastu and its domain, it is advisable to complete the construction of the entire compound wall before commencing any other construction activity. The South and the West side compounds should be of stone construction, solid and heavy, and with sufficient height.

Soil-analysis should be carried out. The soil not having requisite characteristics as per the Vaastushastra should not be used for ground filling. Good quality soil should be procured from elsewhere, for this purpose.

A bore-well or a constructed well for a water source should be located in the North or the Northeast directions.

The Southern walls should not have any door or window openings. The wall in this direction should be either 18-inch (45-cm) thick construction or a double wall with cavity in-between.

Maximum possible number of doors, windows, and ventilators should be provided in the North, Northeast, and East directions.

In the same house, differential levels for internal rooms are not advisable.

Basements and cellars should be avoided.

Roofs, if provided, should have slopes towards the East, the Northeast, and the North directions.

8

Roofs slanting towards the South and the West directions are not advisable.

If possible, an additional room or a floor should be constructed on the Southwest side.

Extra height should be allowed for parapet walls on the South and the West sides.

The Southwest plinth level should be 9 inches (22.5 cm) higher than the other plinth levels and the planned ground slopes towards the North and East directions should be taken into consideration before determining the other construction levels.

Audumber family trees should be planted on the South border, while the West side could have Nilgiri (Eucalyptus) trees or medicinal, herbal, and aromatic plants and bushes.

The North and the East sides should be provided with open spaces for free air circulation.

In cases where the neighbouring plot includes a water-body or pond on its Northeast side, the height of the compound wall on the Southwest -side of one's own plot should be raised sufficiently to make the Southwest side extra massive. This provision can be made at the landscaping stage itself

It is considered profitable to purchase additional adjoining land on the North, Northeast, and East sides. On no account any land should be acquired on the South or West sides, once a house has been constructed on a plot.

9

In construction of the structure proper, uneven shapes, fancy windows and unwarranted cantilever projections should strictly be avoided.

In ownership flats, options for prior planning are limited. Hence, the Vaastu should be made healthy and full of vitality through external means. Selection of a painting scheme for the flat based on the Shri Ranga Chakra in such cases proves very helpful.

Lightweight items should be placed in the North and the East directions, while rigid and heavy things should be located in the South and the West. This principle is applicable not only to the entire Vaastu, but to individual rooms also.

If the East side is blocked on any account, additional windows should be provided in the North direction. If possible, the sunlight should be beamed in from the East direction by making use of some sort of reflector mechanism.

The North, Northeast, and East side walls should be decorated preferably with photographic frames or paintings of Goddesses and wall papers with natural scenery etc...

The North, Northeast and East side walls should be painted with bright glossy colours, while the painting scheme for the West and South side walls could use dull, mat-finish type colours.

Toilets should be located in the South and the West.

A Vaastu with 100% matching of characteristics and performance as espoused in Vaastushastra is an idealistic condition. In practice, it is absolutely necessary or sometimes, even sufficient to achieve minimum of 50% to 60% of the characteristics of the ideal conditions in a Vaastu.

10

Overhead tank should be on the West side. A tank on the North or the East side is also permissible. But, underground or ground level water should never be stored in the West or the Southwest directions.

One should sleep with his head pointing towards the East* or the South direction. Beds should be arranged accordingly. (*as per ancient texts on Vaastu Vidya)

Puja-room (prayer room) should be planned in such a manner that the back of the Goddesses should touch the East side wall, with the person facing the East direction while performing the Puja.

Multi-coloured fancy lamps should be fixed on the North and the East walls, specifically avoiding the South side surfaces.

If possible, the Vaastu should be extended by 4 - 5 ft (1.5 meters) in the Northeast direction to ensure the Northeast directional bliss for the household or a shop. Vaastu Rules for Agriculture

Agricultural land should be divided into equal rectangular plots, preferably with breadth to length ratio of 1: 1.618. The longer side should be oriented along the North-South axis, while the shorter side along the East-West direction.

Electrical power points should be located in the Southeast comer.

The bunds on the South and West sides should be at a higher level, while those on the East and North sides at a lower level or the ground on these sides should be a flat terrain.

11

One-tenth of the plot on the Southwest side should be raised by constructing a solid stone parapet.

The ground should have descending slopes towards the North and East sides.

Trees should be planted in the South and West directions.

Planting of trees in the North and East directions should be avoided.

A well should be dug in the Northeast, North or East side of the plot.

Any shed or a farmhouse on the plot should be constructed in the Southwest comer of the plot. The following code of belief of Vaastushastra governs the landscaping

process;

Making the Southwest side massive and heavy.

Loading the South direction.

Providing descending slopes towards the North, East and Northeast directions.

Constructing an underground water tank in the North, East or Northeast direction and providing a small water pond or open water body in one of these directions.

12

Elevating the compound walls on the South, Southwest and West directions and ensuring that these are massive and heavy.

Constructing the compound walls on the East, Northeast and North sides with light-weight material and maintaining these at a relatively lower elevation.

Locating the electrical power transformer and other electrical power points in the Southeast comer.

Constructing a cottage in the Southwest comer of the plot, with minimum side margins.

Planting of Nilgiri (eucalyptus) trees in the West zone of the plot, along with some varieties of medicinal, herbal and aromatic bushes.

The above code of belief allow certain qualitative improvement in a Vaastu, endowing it with virtues and purity. Few of the predominant effects are;

Interrupting the South 'Pingala' current flow.

Achieving energy-mass balance through proportionate compensation for geomagnetic and energy disturbances. Regulating the excessive southern zone temperatures through water - vapour emission processes of trees like Nilgiri (eucalyptus) and Neem (margosa). Creating a healthy and wholesome atmosphere inside the house through scent and aroma of herbal plants.

13

Enhancing the quality of the Vaastu through beneficial effects of transverse polarisation of sunlight falling on an open water surface. Though outmost care has been taken to develop these rules / guidelines, It is necessary to understand it in a proper perspective and spirit. For successful application of rules, in-depth analysis and study must back up the whole exercise http://www.eventsconstruction.com/vaastu_important_rules2.asp
